I did my engineering in IT!! Heard from some of my friends that Operations will add value only if you have a mechanical engineering background and that mechanical students will have an edge during placements. how far s t true?

There is no exact format to go about a case study. So, cannot suggest something without taking the actual example of a case. However, please go through following blogs and they shall help you in broadening the perspective while dealing with case studies:

Streamline Supply Chain
SCM Blog - The "Supply Chain" Blog
APICS Blogs

Also, try to think from all the possible scenarios while solving a case and not just restrict to one. Remember there is no best solution for a case. It is all relative so you need to do better than your peer aspirants !

Few things which you can look about in SCM case are:
1. How are the issues of procurement resolved.
2. Supplier relationship and supplier base talked about.
3 .Cost of procurement
4. Any manufacturing issues ( financial / technical / operational )
5. Distribution network used and is it the optimal one.
6. Overall Logistics Cost
7. How are service levels maintained.
8. Quality issues
9. Customer Relationship issues

1. Profile looks to me as of more oriented towards Customer Relationship end and very small part consists of Logistics and that too not the one which is generally given to Supply Chain Managers.

2. One definitely gets to learn a good amount working for a small company but seeing the responsibilities in JD, i feel that it wont help you much when you sit for core SCM profiles ( already mentioned quite a few times on this thread ). However, you can leverage this offer's experience only in CRM profiles.

Have already discussed this in initial pages of the thread. Still just to reiterate the gist in one line,

SCM refers to managing the entire gamut of entities involved in delivering the end product/service to customer i.e. procurement , manufacturing, warehousing , Distribution, inventory management, customer relationship supplier relationship etc.

Logistics is the facilitator of Supply Chain which takes care of the movement of finished goods / semi finished goods/ raw materials etc. from one entity to the other of supply chain.

Feel free to shoot any doubt on this!

Hey dude...I'm from Welingkar, first year PGDM. A company is gonna come to our campus in a couple of weeks for the sake of offering summer internships in the field of SCM. I've attached the profile under which selected candidates will be expected to work. Please let me know if that's the profile one normally gets to work under.

Also, would you recommend applying for a small company (Small in terms of 'stature'). Its not a hi-fi org. But I liked what they are offering. Would you recommend goin in for it. As, right now, the company's status matters little to me. What i get to learn is of more importance to me! I have an IT background with no idea about SCM. So, will this be a good opportunity for me to get a hang of what is expected in SCM?

In my opinion, there are no major challenges that you would face. I personally didnt find anything specific in SCM/Ops curriculum that necessitates one to be an engineer.

So need not worry. SCM/Ops is entirely common sense along with broad perspective for business keeping long term effects in consideration and for this one need not be an engineer.

Do not let all this bug you and keep studying and try to solve numericals/practical examples/simulation problems to strengthm your knowledge base.

I am a first year student at SIBM Bangalore. I am planning to go for Operations as a specialization. But the issue is that I am a Non-Engineer (B.Sc in Chemistry), though I have an IT experience of 3 years as systems engineer.

Course content looks fine to me. It would be good to cover the areas mentioned in the curriculum and shall help you. However, would suggest to do a bit more research on recognition of the course in Indian industry as well as in US and UK.

Also, since the course content will help you in industries other than manufacturing as well so i don't think that's the reason you should worry.

I bumped into this thread this morning and I really appreciate what you people are doing here. In times when the whole world is whining about the recession, you inspire some hopes! Good Work there!

Now, I have a very specific query about a particular course and stream. I have 2 year experience in a manufacturing concern- I'm a SAP Basis Consultant; and have also been working as a Business Process Analyst for past 2 years (it's a small company- we wear many hats.) My work involves analyzing current processes, identifying gaps, suggesting improvements and documenting/ implementing the new management-approved business process. Needless to say, I love my job- get to learn something every day- at some point of time wish to become a management consultant.

To improve my strengths in the area: I applied for some specialized courses in UK and have been selected into MSc- Operations, Projects and Supply Chain Management at the Manchester Business School.

Problem is: my father believes the course is too manufacturing centric (in his mind, operations=production) and Indian Manufacturing Scene is all but over now. Also, we are little concerned if the degree would be recognised here in the management consultancies in India? (plan to come back to India, as job scenario in UK not too good.) He wants me to completely stay away from SCM/ Operations and focus on SAP, but SAP Basis is a technical profile, something I can't do all my life. I want to specialise in Business Improvement- but to be better at it- I need to have specialised degrees.

I don't understand what decision you wanna make in two days. But don't make any decision to get into Operation/Finance, just because you senior placements aren't good enough. Do a little introspection and find out where your strength and interests lie.

Finance, looking at the current scenario, is a bit shaky as evidenced by various media reports and the unsettling euro crisis. Operations will not have much of an impact owing to gloomy global economy. Both are interesting areas, find out which one suits you best. Good Luck.

As per the industry feedback and suggestions by seniors working in SCM Industry, the certificate mentioned in ad of TOI is not worthy in terms of recognition by industry people and value addition in resume.

Also, in my opinion its better to go for certification only if it is respected in industry which in case of SCM certifications are the ones given by APICS, USA.

PS: There are lot of organizations providing the certifications today in different fields including SCM and some of them might be at much lower costs as well. But, we should go for certifications of only those bodies which are recognized by industry. Cost should not be the factor if the purpose is to get some value added.

We have discussed here about APICS CSCP exams, but I just saw an advt in education times of TOI about CPSM exam (certified professional in supply management) through Institute for Supply Management, United States of America, (ISM, USA) (website-> Institute for Supply Management - Home Page). In India, exam is conducted in collaboration with some univ and fee is 20K. Eligibility is graduation degree and 3 yrs work ex. Is it worth it? Pls pour your views on this certification..

As i mentioned in last post, APICS and some work on lines of OR Modelling, linear programming, sound hand in excel use shall strengthen your case in terms of profile for getting into SCM roles.

As far as correspondence courses are concerned, i will not recommend them. Rather, i will suggest to go for some weekend courses on either of the knowledge areas mentioned above.

Few things which would help you :

1. APICS Certifications like CSCP/CPIM.

2. Get good hands on use of Excel, mainly the different inbuilt functions like regression etc. Infact, you can do lot of stuff like forecasting etc using appropiate excel models. Having their knowledge shall be a great plus point.

3. Try to do small projects in linear programming and modelling after learning them through books and online sources. This shall differentiate you from rest of the bricks !

and there are three such stages.

Slightly disagree on certifications costing the fortune and material stuff.

CPIM , each level is around 12.5k and CSCP is 37.5k overall. I dont find the rates to be too high when compared to few other highly recognized certifications.

Secondly, material can always be arranged through some networking and i ahve always reiterated to get the material from any of your friends in B-Schools where material is available in library.

As far as scores are concerned, one needs to score 300 to clear the certification and '1 month serious preparation' gives around 90-95% results. And trust me, these certifications are a cake walk if one has good busines understanding on operational stuff and SCM is more or less mere common sense ! We just need to refine our understanding a bit to clear the certification.

PS- These are my perspectives, am here to seek USEFUL suggestions, nt for judgments! hope u understand and provide me something productive!! that would be of great help.. :)

Have suggested in reply to your previous query what all you can do to build your profile and knowledge in operations/SCM before getting into B-School for the same. In case you need names of books etc, let me know and would try to provide 1-2 names for each of books which are considered to be the best.

Have you already found another job in your favorite field...

If you want to stand out from the junta and have Operations as interest, you can start reading books on Operations, starting with The Goal By Goldratt.
After gaininf more knowledge and foothold in the field, you can start applying to companies in this field and switch.
You can also try and get APICS certifications if you get enough knowledge and that will help you get jobs in Operations across good companies. and this will also add to your profile.
You can also go for PGDSCM from Symbiosis distance learning if you have time in hand.

But the most important thing I would like to point out is that there is a Golden Opportunity waiting for you to get into operations in the TATA group itself.

Complete two years in the group and then try and get into TAS inhouse. This will make sure that you get into Operations and you don't need to do an MBA or any certification for that matter.

Could you please suggest any extra factors (certifications/part-time bt specific field jobs/courses) I can add to my profile before facing GD/PI so that it makes me stand out of those "bricks" ???

Taking up MBA was the decision i made way back when i was in 9th std, there after as an effect of Dot Com Bubble we saw huge craze for "software" than i made up my mind to pursue UG in Computer Science coz as soon as i finish my UG there will be a "job in hand" as companies visit for recruitment, which ll also help to have that "extra edge" of having an "wok exp" (as i had learned long back that work exp counts significantly for MBA). But having a year of exp now, I feel its sooner the better to go for wat i want. I am trying to connect with UG in CSE to MBA in Operations/Marketing?

I have been working in SCM-as a buyer in a MNC for the last 2.5 years, gained alot from practical experiences,
but still find it difficult to increase my value in market.
I planned to pursue mba in SCM (Operation) but issue lies from which collage.
As i don't wana go for MBA thru distant,
i have heard of nitie but percentile required bitter my dreams.

There is no such preference which i came across so far. Though core work ex in manufacturing/operations is preferred by pharma industry as well when it comes to SCM roles.

However, for some other roles they might prefer doctors but not for core SCM roles to the best of my knowledge and observations so far.

CSCP is just one exam and covers holistic overview of all Supply Chain concepts and is preferred for people having work ex.

CPIM is in different levels and one needs to clear 4 exams to become a CPIM certified professional. Here, each level deals with one specific area of Supply Chain in detail.

2 years of work ex which you have seen as eligibility criteria is for CSCP certification by APICS. Though site mentions relevant work ex, IT work ex is also considered valid. And before paying the fee, you need to get work ex approved by APICS , so no issues of registration fee going in vain if work ex is not valid.

For CPIM certification, no such criteria is there and freshers can take it as well.

Every major FMCG/Pharma/Automobile/Manufacturing firm has SCM roles to offer and not only CTC but inhand is handsome amount. Ranging from 70 - 98 k per month on an average . So, need not worry on brand and package front.

However, it might differ from college to college when it comes to salary figures.

In my opinion, Operations management would suit you more than IT-Systems. Reason being you can leverage your b.tech knowledge better in Operations and people with mechanical background are the coveted ones as well for operations management. Knowledge of SAP-ABAP shall help you as well.

2. How different are the roles in SCM/operations management/inventory management/logistics??(greatly confused on this)

All the roles mentioned are deep areas in themselves and can be chosen as the one to build career. Nature of the work and skills required might vary slightly from role to role but the work life balance almost remains the same across the roles mentioned.

You can easily google the information on these roles and get acquainted with them. In case of any difficulty in understanding any nuance about them, feel free to post here !

3. If i want to work in logistics...which are the best companies to think of ??

Companies for Logistics will vary from the role you want to pursue in Logistics. The roes within logistics vary from Consulting in Logistics ( companies like Miebach etc. offer such nice consulting services ) , Logistics role in FMCG/Pharma/Manufacturing firm where you might work on entire distribution planning and warehouse management specific to your company ( here the companies of respective fields can be considered to be the best ones eg: HUL, P&G; in FMCG )

PS: i too have similar profile except the b.tech branch !!:)
