Ugc rules are bogus..also certain all india rules need to be looked at becasue every university in india is different. Like the marking scheme here in C.U is so different than from various other universities. So that needs to be looked in also.

I am really fed up of this stupid rule of ugc of 6 months classes coz of which a employed person like me will have to leave 6 months salary which is a 2 lac rs loss

I have just gone through the entire thread and ISB's CFA site, and I learn that only 2-3 admits are allowed to conduct their research in finance. So, this wud fairly be a competitive for any newcomer who is interested in persuing a career in research & analysis. As you also mentioned, we really do not have world class facilities currently to conduct PhD programmes in India.
Now, would you like to mentioned programmes across the world, leaving top 10 Ivy league colleges in US(coz its really difficult to secure an admission!), which you really find are good in terms of their quality in empirical research and also comparitively less competitive in terms of admissions. I am from a NIT passed out engg working in IT, score 700+ but with a desire to search a field research where i can have life long learning experience at work.

First of all I would like to apologise for the mode of presentation..........What all I said and the interpretations that I derived about you, though true....were presented in a harsh and brutal manner.....It could have been done in a more polite manner.......actually your "AFRAID" point didn't went down well with me.....

India certainly has been able to create great research standards in the biology, Chemical Sciences, space technology, nuclear technology, etc. domain.........But etc. certainly doesn't include management domain.....
The emotions being put forward by you, are nothing more than a Chemical Reaction in your mind.......But FACTS are FACTS...........FACTS are not chemical reactions.......
And the matter of Fact is that Government's Premiere Management Institutions are pathetic with respect to their research standards..........But certainly India is not blank w.r.t. to quality research institutions....there are two of them and both of them are private......Only thing is that ISB is not a recoganised body so it cannot offer a doctoral or its equivalent.....BUt GLIM is.....and it will certainly start one in the next 5-6 years......
No wonder why there are 17000 people from India who go to the US for doctorals....Out of these there are somewhere 8000 in the finance and management domain.............What don't they go into IIMs??????? FACTS!!!!!!
The people who go in for FPM(PhD equivalent) of IIMs doesn't enjoy a good future....this is the picture of the FPMs(PhDs) from IIMs on a broader level...........FACTS!!!!!!!
Its only upto the Top-2 Private Institutions to provide India some dignity in the Management Research Domain, and they are doing that well........Certainly India will be best in the management domain, but this won't be done by Government's Institutions, instead by non-government bodies like GLIM and ISB..............until and unless governments bring in major reforms and give IIMs absolute-freedom in operations........which certainly is not likely to happen in the nearly future.........Though the government has plans to bring in reforms in the education sector....but that doesn't include IIMs in a big way.........Its is allowing private profitable institutions to set up their shops in India(till now only private non-profitable institutions were allowed).........Moreover, foreign universities will also be allowed to set up there campuses in Inida......Acceptance on the part of the government that its institutions have failed to provide quality in a big way(in their own league w.r.t. their international counterparts).......FACTS!!!!!!!!!

I believe that after this long gyan you would have been able to realise that you certainly need to broaden your perspective and learn to accomodation FACTS and opinions which are against your own belief system.........Sometimes we are so rigid with our mindset that we don't let FACTS get in our way.......It happens with everyone, even with me.....but I am certainly quick to realise that I need to accomodate opinions and FACTS of others........and broaden my perspective........

One more thing, I have often observed that people in PagalGuy have too much of a money minded and security oriented mindset.....Nowadays everyone wants to work in the Investment Banking Industry.....99% of such people won't even be able to explain the job profile of an Investment Banker....the kind of life one lives in a field like Investment Banking.........
I didn't wanted the same to happen with a PhD from an International University........That's why I've used such a harsh language with the replies to your questions........People at large must make it clear to themselves the kind of life that one lives in a field like research.....and what a doctoral is all about...........

Dear Anirudh , after a long long time I have seen a person at PG who has the gumption to explain a concept (it being the motive to do a simple PhD) in the most cogent manner , and the way you replied to the unnecessary criticism bestowed is exemplary , I totally agree with your observations regarding the expectations + maturity level of a majority of youngsters seeking a quality Management education ........ROI should be calculated but not at the cost of money but should be done by gauging one's own interest ......

ISB has launched its own doctoral programme in collaboration with Insead. Interns will get a stipend of 40000 p.m. during the programme. Refer ISB website for details.

I have gone through your posts in the forum, it has guided me a lot. However, still I have confusion.

As I am doing a job, whether I should go for full time PhD or part-time. I also don't know any person who can be guide me for my PhD program.

Consider US universities only ( it is basically a FREE ride if you can make the cut). GMAT 700+ is required. Plus you need to know what type of finance specialization/research you are interested in, there is too much competition even for Ph.D. Especially now!!!

Well, as far as I know there is nothing like a full-time or a part-time PhD in Government's Universities.........Though some universities organise classes in the first year of PhD, but they are not compulsory to attend.......In most of the universities there is no classroom system in a PhD Programme........Almost all the PhDs in 'social sciences' are part-time PhDs.......
You can get yourself registered in any university.......But make sure u enroll with a good GUIDE who has the potential enough to give you guidance with respect to your post-PhD utilisation of your thesis..........

You must select a topic with is linked to your job-profile with a clear outlook on its future utilisation...............You should talk to people who are 3-4 times senior to you in hierarchy in your company........about the possible topics that can help you accelerate in your career.....which can help you develop a vision with regards to the industry, which you are presently serving..........TOPIC of the thesis is more important than the thesis itself................You must get published some research papers in good journals......which have some or the other linkage to your job profile or the industry in which you are presently working.........
Moreover, at the end of your doctoral, you must get your thesis published.....else your thesis will be labelled as 'all copied material'(the kind of PhD one can do using an internet connection)........

I'll PM you a person's phone no. after 3-4 days(after taking permission from him).......no one in India can give your better insights and guide w.r.t. a PhD in India......not even an IIM-A prof.....talk to him....and immediately after that ask for the same information form a IIM prof.....you will certainly notice the difference and his talent too.......
This guy is a genius in terms of insights w.r.t. your post-PhD thesis utalisation.......
I certainly expect you to respect the insights that he gives to you.....and expect that they should not be shared with anyone on any public forum(including PG)............they are exclusively for you......I'm giving this guy's contact to you seeing your interest towards a doctoral...........

Now comes the real part...........Why did I used the word idiotic.........No offences Please...But please try to catch my point............

When I refer to a 1 crore rupee package in my 1st post.........It was aimed to tell Mudit that a career in research can be quite rewarding..........I initially thought that there might be some reluctance on the part of Mudit w.r.t. to the basic min. financial satisfaction which one wants form life, that's why he might not be going in for a full-time Doctoral................However, if after reading abt the avg. pay of a faculty @ ISB, your head spins and u decide to go on for a PhD.....then u have taken the first step towards a journey which only leads to destruction......................One must have a natural desire to learn, creativity, power to think an out-of-the box approach, imagination power to take a career in research.............
A PhD doesn't mean a career only in teaching.........there are a plethora of opportunities.............U can take up a job as an economist in a company..........There are also opportunities available in Investment Banking.......U can take a job at a research center..........In India the best one will be Harvard's India Research Centre, Mumbai............It conducts India focussed research to develop India Focussed case studies for Harvard's MBA programme as well as provides Executive education for Top-Level Management of Indian Corporation..........It was started in 2006......a career in finance research at a top-tier business school, consulting firm, investment banking house etc. Initial compensation for finance PhDs in any of those areas is currently around $250,000 per annum(= 1.25 crore) in the USA


Moving Ahead, after reading the post by Mr. Jain it was able to infer the following..........
(No Offences Please......just my opinion............try to think over what I'm about to say)....
He just wants to earn more and more money......................in less and less time................with the less and less cost incurred............
Research is not about Money..............Its about living a life in which one has to undergo a life-long learning...........................It lot depends on how you want to live your life.........
As the ISB says, its not about the best career instead the RIGHT CAREER.....
If you want to go for a doctoral for MONEY.............you actually are an Idiot.................You have no idea what a doctoral is all about!!!!!!!!
The kind of life which one lives in a field like research.............

A doctoral is not about money, time and ROI.............
Though a career in Research is quite rewarding............but if you go into it just for the rewards it offers you are actually an idiot...............
In such a case either you will run away mid-way..........or you will submit a Third Class Thesis...............with only few poor quality research papers and no EMPIRICAL RESEARCH conducted............eventually leading you no where..............you will destroy your future completely............Many have ruined there life by entering into a feild like research.......which includes PhDs from Harvard as well.....

A good thesis is one which has some quality Research papers published in Top-40 international journals................Includes EMPIRICAL RESEARCH conducted...............Empirical Research is out of imagination of Faculties at Indian Universities and even IIMs(ABC included)................
Nowhere in India you can end up submitting a World-Class Thesis.........

I think a lot of wrong perception is being built about me.........
It saw the post containing a long list of questions..........a long time back.............I never wanted to answer those questions............it was based completely on money, time and ROI.................A PhD is not about that...........Its about creativity, imagination power and a natural desire to learn.........Its not an MBA where u study all that, what has already been researched on.............

But now it is a sheer compulsion for me to answer all those idiotic questions(refer next post to know why I have used the word idiotic):oops::oops:.........

1. How lucrative in terms of pay is career of a prof at say IIM/IIT and US university.
Answer Management department of IIT is too sub-standard.......for IIMs its okay...............
Average earnings of faculties at ISB is Rs. 70 lakhs p.a........
For Mr. Dean(Ajit Rajnekar) its Rs. 1.8 crore+ Amenities(Total approx. 2.1 crore)......
@IIMs faculty pay is approx. Rs. 10 lakhs p.a.......Thats why they take consulting assignments and executive development programmes..........so as to save themselves from the shame they had to face from their ISB and international counter parts in terms of wealth and earnings.(Consulting Assignment being taken by a prof @ premiere B-School is not considered to be a good thing at the international level...........Providing Consulting Services is not a profs' job)..........However, Govt. of India has brought in a new system in place where IIM profs will be paid at market competitive rates...........at the same time job security will be done away with............an evaluation system for the faculties will be put in place...........Moreover, there will be an 'ALMOST' ban on consulting assigment; faculties will have to surrender 85% of the money earned from consulting assignments to the institute.................These steps have been taken since empirical research @ IIMs are at a new low, infact NIL.........The only institutes which do quality empirical research in India are ISB and GLIM(Great lakes Institute of Management, Chennai..............A new start-up...........Will make it big in the next 2-4 years...........Started by an Ex-Associate of ISB)..................

2. I saw the ISB site it mentions a girl making to Kellog univ. so what about others , i mean do all make it or there are case where people do not make it.
ANSWER Well every year the no. of people inducted on the post of Researcher is approx. 1-2........It may also be possible that in a particular year no one might be inducted...........it all depends on the availability of quality candidates................Well, people making into premiere universities in the US, is all dependent upon the quality of work done during the internship...........research work done in the said 2 years..........research papers published in international journals..........Research papers are about new thing that have not been studied by anyone.........It all depends upon the desire to learn and the creativity of the individual...........Moreover, during the first 6 months the performance of the intern is watched closely.....if not found upto the mark....then the faculty picks the individual up throws him out........

3. How much time in general it takes for person to do phd from US univ.
ANSWER It will take approx. 2-4 years depending upon the topic, post-PhD career desired, compotence and creativity of the individual after working for 2 years @ CAF(Centre for analytical Finance).........However, it is not fixed.......it may take 15-30 years as well..........may people run away after struggling for 2-3 years...........It must be clear to the individual 'Why does he/she wants to do a doctoral in the first place????'............It must be kept in mind that there got to be a natural desire to learn................

4. What is the fees in US for phd prog.
ANSWER Don't worry....the fee will be completely waived off......

5. Is it possible to get some kind of a scholarship and stipend in US univ while pursuing phd.
ANSWER Yes. There are plenty of such opportunities........They can work in a research project being conducted in the university............Can get themselves involved in a part-time teaching work..........etc. etc.

6. What excatly do the research scholars undergo at ISB , are all scholars paid stipend ?
ANSWER Yes. all are paid a good stipend.
In the first 6 months they will do theoritical study......They will also have to attend few courses((subjects) of PGPM(MBA)..........
In the next 6 months focus will be on case studies......
In the 2nd year.............they will conduct research with a residential faculty........based on quality of work done in 2nd year they will make it in to premiere US - Universities........usually all make it through, since the inefficient stuff is thrown out in the first 6 months itself...........but at the same time it won't be right to infer that if all are able to make it through then you too will be able to make it through......it all depends upon the work done in the 2nd year........However, till now all have been able to make it through.............

7. generally in how much time do scholars at ISB acan make/do make to univerrsity
ANSWER 2-3 years.....

Looks like interest of Indians is growing in doctoral level learning and research....
I would request the viewers not to PM me, instead post in the forum so that all can share the answers of the questions asked!!!!

It is much advisable that you go on for a full time PhD.
The initial renumeration for Finance PhD in US is US$225,000(=1.25 Crore)pa.
This may sound unrealistic but it is true.(Source:ISB's website).
But it should be quality PhD and should definitely include empirical research conducted and not only Research Papers. In India you won't be able to do such good work anywhere (even in the PhD Programme of IIMs, Known as Fellow Program in Management). Empirical Research is out of their imagination.
The Best approach advisable to you is that you should apply for an internship as Researcher @ ISB's Centre for Analytical Finance.

When you will go on for your PhD.....and will work on a Research Paper......you must realise that for every 2 research papers published you must have an article published in any of the the leading newspapers which is in line with any 1 of the the research papers. 2. Within 6 months of joining a PhD programme you must develop a clear perspective with ur post-PhD career.....this will help you in aligning your PhD work with your post-PhD career.....Having a clear focus on how are you gonna use your PhD in your future life is one of the International Best Practices in the field of Research.
