Hi puys!
This looks like the right thread to post the BIG dilemma I'm in, and seek suggestions from the PG community.
Background :
I'm a EEE engineer. Passed out from engg college last year, and have been working with a reputed analytics firm in Bangalore for the past 1 year.
1 year at job has been great. Quite simply put, I've enjoyed my work thoroughly.
I've appeared for CAT 2 years in a row now, and have not been able to crack it.So I decided to focus my energies towards my job.
Lately, I've been bitten by the "MBA bug" again. After seeing loads of people preparing and going to some of the finest instituitions in India/abroad, I've started re-evaluating my options.
Problem :
The big confusion at hand, now, is whether I should continue with my job, or start preparing for CAT again?
I want to do one thing whole-heartedly, so the choice becomes even more crucial. If I choose to be in my job, I know that I'll not put in much effort towards CAT prep. If I choose CAT prep, I'll stop going the extra mile in my job (will stop all the extra certifications/skillsets I'm working towards).
Unable to make my mind for several days now, I finally sat one fine day and listed down pros and cons of both the options I have.
I present the analysis to you, with a humble request to give your suggestions.
Job
Pros:
1. More years in the job=>more development of skillset=>bigger opportunities when I switch jobs.
2.Analytics is being touted as "the next big thing" everywhere. There sure is going to be a high demand for analytics professionals in the near future.
3.Current job satisfaction is high.I love my job.
4.There is a lot to do and lot to learn in a small company(~1500 employees, just one office, and I'm a very pro-active, hungry to learn and do more kind of person). My first promotion is due in 6 months, with a close to 70% raise in my CTC.
5.Lots of opportunities to grow in a smaller company. Again, more opportunities=>more growth=>better future prospects(in terms of brand, money and work)
6.My company is a category-defining company. We are almost unique in our offerings.I might not get similar opportunities in other well-established industries.
Cons:
1. I have no satisfactory answer to the questions "What is your skill set? What do you specialize in?". Standard answers(like a lot of my buddies have) are - Java, Automobile engineering, Networking. I fear that I will have no skillset if, at all, the much-hyped Analytics fails to rise and grow as predicted.
2.Money will become a big factor in a couple of years. My compnay is not known to be a great paymaster.
The other side - MBA
Pros:
1.Increase in monetary compensation. Yes, money is very important to me.
2.Will have a more defined skillset. Will be able to make switches to more defined fields like consulting, finance, marketing.(the words"high flying" also come to my mind over here.)
3.As of today, I do not have any bright entrepreneurial ideas. MBA looks like a good, reliable staircase to the next floor.
4.As years pass by, returing back to school and studying might get increasingly difficult.
5.Shifting to a new domain after getting an MBA is easier now, that it will be some years down the line.
6.10 years down the line, I see myself as my senior manager - solving problems, satisfying customers and taking up a lot of responsibility. I believe MBA will fast-track my growth to this level.
Cons:
1. Expectations from my own self will increase(in terms of money and work).Right now, I'm in a great mindset - learn whatever comes your way. After an MBA, that might change to "I want more money and a higher position because I have an MBA degree".
2. Will miss out on being a part of Analytics, which as of now, promises a great future.
Apologies for the long post, but it's all because I'm in a serious head-bashing, nerve-racking dilemma.
I hope I could use the immense experience that all you puys at PG have, to make a decision.
Please advise.
