For depository operations module i dont know but for mutual fund its little hard compared to the online mocks...as its a certification exam so...level will be high

I have been preparing for the 'FIMMDA NSE Debt Market (Basic) Module' since the past month and I just can't seem to crack the mock test from the NCFM website.

Well, the truth is my interest lies in Finance field, especially in Equity Markets. And I think it is better, for me at least, that I follow my interest. My first focus is on learning.

I am preparing for MBA exams. So it is my first priority right now. And as I have only specific B Schools on my mind, I have to prepare for plan B.

The shift which I make to intend will help me in two ways. First is that I'll gain some experience pre-MBA, in the field which I intend to work on. Second is that at the time of placements I'll be having at least some experience, so there is a possibility that I get a higher preference. I asked someone on PG and he said that such an experience will definitely help in every aspect.

If I can make the switch, pre-MBA, without NCFM then I'd be more than happy .

All of u NCFM enthusiasts, feel free to post ur queries.. I hv cleared 12 of the 14 modules, and could be of help..
Broadly, if u are an absolute lay(wo)man, Beginners' Module is recommended to begin with.. otherwise Securities Mkt Basic Module can be treated as the launchpad, which would give fair idea of many other modules too.. and then u can think which one to go for suiting ur career/academic interest..

Their finance placements are not that good.... so i was thinking to add few certification that would add to my knowledge as well as in my resume. I am a software engineer working with a big IT firm for the last 9 months.However, I don't want to stay in the same field for long and right now I am preparing for CAT 2012 (I will give CAT 2011 but the preparations had started just a month back,and I am not able to devote much time because of long working hours)
Lately,I had developed an interest towards Finance and want to earn a fair knowledge of the same before I get into a B school.And given that I am from computer science background,Finance concepts are all alien to me.
A friend suggested me to go through NSE certification modules alongwith my CAT preps.
I have following queries:

1.Is there any need of giving the certification exams?I have heard they don't add much value to your resume and everybody passes them successfully.Is the same also true for somebody from IT field?

2.'Financial Markets:A beginner's module' is a must but is very basic and certainly not enough.What are the other modules that I should go through?I am seeking suggestions for some essential modules as there are some 35 odd modules there.

3.Can I get hardcopy of these in the market or from somebody else?I don't have a laptop/desktop of my own and company hours make it difficult to study there.Also I am not very comfortable in studying softcopies.

Apart from these any further suggestions are welcome.

Step wise approach is recommended. Big things are not achieved at one go but slow and steady.

Just concentrate on CAT. If u get into some top 20-25 college then there wont be need for NCFMs. Infact as already told some 1000 times, NCFMs just help u in increasing knowledge...U shudnt be thinking abt 35 or 45 modules or Beginners module etc.

If u clear say all 35 modules but study in a B grade college then it wont really help u as compared to doing Zero modules but MBA from good clg.

Consider NCFM as a knowlej booster and not CV booster.
So just study the pdfs instead of takin the xam.
Read following:
1...Beginners Module
2...Securities
3...Capital Markets
4...Investment Analysis & Portfolio Mgmt.

Just take their overview.Once u r done , begin wid Derivatives.

ALTERNATIVELY : Forget NCFMs....study for CFA L1 .... purchase its material ... read it ... take the exam wen u feel confident. CFA L 1 alone will boost ur CV as well as knowlej.

in terms of course content and recognition (vis-a-vis employment opportunituy). I am looking at starting a career in equity research and need to make a decision within the next 2 days.

PS: i intend to do CFA or MBA fin eventually.

See in terms of certification you will find a thousand institutes offering certifications in thousand areas (NCFM, CBA, IMS, BSE's certification, FLIP etc etc). The course content that they offer is amazingly same. You will be taught jargon, different valuation ratios. But this will all be on a cosmetic scale. For example, you will learn what is PE ratio and what is PBV ratio. But, you will not be taught in detail which ratio to use in what situation. Ultimately, based on these certifications, you will get the role of a data entry operator. That means, someone else will make the model. And you will just fill in the numbers, after a company comes out with its quarterly result.

As such, the employment opportunities would be the back offices of different KPOs - a popular KPO if you're really lucky.
Thus, while these certifications would add a bullet point on your CV, they would do nothing more than that. If you really wanna get into ER, focus and build your knowledge on certain sectors, understand why they behave in a particular way. Read financial newspapers and understand why did the market rally or why did it crash.

Again, while the course content of the above certifications will help you get started, it will not take you to the intermediate level. That is something, that you will have to do yourself.

1. Try to get a top 20 b skool. If u do so , certfications wont really do any change to ur job prospects as MBA alone will get u a gud job.
2. FLIP do claim but then no one knows abt how much assistance u will get for placements.

I am facing a dillema. I am not able to decide whether to go for NCFM (Capital Markets/ Derivatives Markets) in next 1-2 Months or CFA Level-1 next year in Dec once i get into a good b school. .

Further Can CFA Level-1 be given next year in June with 2 months preparation? as I am looking for some boost in my resume.

NCFM WILL NOT GIVE ANY BOOST TO UR CV irrespective of any XYZ exam u take in it.
Go for CFA L1 and yes 2 months will be highly insufficient unless u r super intelligent. ..and yes CFA L1 will be good for CV as well as knowlej.

so .. i was thinking to build my resume ... should i go for ncfm modules ... or shall i appear for CFA L1 december... would clearing it help me converting calls.. since by then i'll have a full 2 years gap ... TIA.

1.NCFM will build ur knowlej and NOT resume.
2.CFA is a world class charter and cant be seen at par wid NCFMs
3.My advice : Get CFA L1 xerox material from Mumbai but take the exam in 2012 once ur MBA kicks off.

hi..if you are planning to do MBA in 2012, giving CFA level 1 is futile and risky too..as while preparing for CAT/XAt it wud be difficult to prepare for CFA 1. Moreover CFA 1 course material is identical to MBA 1st yr course...you can give CFA during your mba..dis will help u at the time of placements.

Regarding NCFM modules, you can give them right nw, howvere it wont help u in converting calls..it will be just an additional knowledge. Hope it helps.

I have heard that exam is pretty simple but since it is the first NCFM exam that i m takin and I will have to travel a huge distance to take it, I dont want to take any chances...

how difficult/easy is it as compared to the sample test provided on the website ?

Take this out of ur mind that NCFMs are easy. They r not difficult also but then u hv to study the entire study material to pass.So u see some effort is indeed required.
Questions will cover all topics..so no "important" topic as such.
TIP - Numericals will be there but they will be very easy...formula based kind..so make sure u get all of them rite.ATB.:thumbsup:

NCFMs wont help u anywhere.Will just boost ur knowledge.

To what extent these tests will be helpful to build our profile , particularly to show them during IIM or other top b school interviews ?

hi everyone ........ i heard that PAN card number is compulsory to take these NCFM exams....... is it true ? can i take these tests even if i dont have a PAN card ? guys reply me soon . so that i can start taking these tests as soon as possible .....

Hi evryone ! I had a few queries regarding NCFM.I am plannin to take certi exam for beginner's module (Financial Markets).

I have heard that exam is pretty simple but since it is the first NCFM exam that i m takin and I will have to travel a huge distance to take it, I dont want to take any chances...

What type of qns can i expect ?
Are there any numericals ?
how difficult/easy is it as compared to the sample test provided on the website ?

Topics from which most of the questions are asked ?

Any advice which might help me in sailing through easily !!

I gave this exam around 2 yrs back and believe me, it is one of the easiest exams you will give. There were only simple MCQs asked, no balance sheet or P/L type questions. In fact, none of the questions required any kind of detailed calculations. I think i completed the entire paper in less than 30 mins.

Take my suggestion, if at all you are going for the NCFM certifications, go for some other module (in most cases, go directly for the Dealers modules). For the beginner module, just download the PDF of the course material and go through it, no need to give the exam coz its not of much use. This way you will get an initial idea of the Financial market and will also save the amount u wud have spent on this exam (coz this particular module doesnt add much to ur CV).

Why only beginners module?? fact is that none of the NCFM modules add anything to ones profile. If knowledge is the reason to go for NCFM(i mean that can be the only reason), one shud simply download and study.

For the Financial Markets: beginner module why the time limit has changed from 60 to 120 keeping total marks same??Is it like questions become difficult???do they give balance sheet/profit-loss account and ask quantitv calulations kinda qns with some ratios n all?
