Ok Guys, I have been with Mu Sigma for the last 1.5 years and I think you should know what to expect from the company.

I am an IIT graduate, who passed out in the middle of recession. My initial offer was for 4.8 lpa which was reduced to 3.3 lpa because of the global meltdown. Due to this, only 8 out of the 15 recruited joined the company. Due to the low pay and long hours, 6 left before they completed 6 months in the company. Again, work could be really good or shitty depending which vertical you head to, who your manager is and how much you enjoy working with data.

I was lucky to get into the retail unit and I have been here since. I can now safely say this much, that I possess much more business knowledge and acumen about the retail industry than any IIM passout. And this no doubt has helped me get a lot of offers in other companies which I have continued to reject for my own personal reasons. My profile also stood out in my interviews in SP Jain and IIFT, but I decided against joining them because I was sure of doing better in the future.

Coming to salary issues, people who performed well in our batch were promoted within a year to 6 lpa. Again, this year we have already been promised another hike to 7.5-8.0 lpa depending on performance. So within 2 years, you go from 3.3 to 7.5,hehe...not bad for such a maligned company! And here is the best part, once you complete 3 years, you get a 3 lac retainer bonus. So in net, you earn around 10.5 lacs in your 3rd year, plus a real time possibility promotion to the Associate Manager level.

For my first year, I slogged out in this company believing I will get my due. I got a shitty pay, I saw my peers leave for other analytics firms who were more than ready to pay 5-6 lpa to them. But now the reality is that, people who stayed back are at a higher profile and pay level; most of them have experienced 3-5 months of onsite opportunities and best of all, you have a profile that really stands out from the crowd.

Really, there shouldn't be any comparison which company to choose, if you want to go for an MBA or foray into the Analytics/Consulting industry.

It would be totally a personal choice what you would want to go for.
If you have interest in coding and development (S/W) you can go for ITC Infotech but if you want to be different from the league of coders and developers, want to work on complex business problems, want a front end profile (includes direct client talks and interactions, ppt's etc. ) then Business Analyst profile at Mu Sigma is the place.
Mu Sigma has work timings exceeding the typical IT timings but if you see other analytics, management consultancy profiles also have the same issue.

You can attend the process anywhere else where it is held...

And generally on Mu sigma...(though it has been answered on this thread)

Mu Sigma does analytics... Which is using data to solve business problems..
We use software tools to analyze the data and generate insights from it...

So if you have good analytical skills and is interested to work with Business problems Mu Sigma is your place...

But work will be hectic depending on the project.. You could be working 12+ hours a day...

Think well before joining...

I would love to work in Mu Sigma. My only concern is about the work hours. My average work hour here is 8-9 hrs plus 2 hrs for travel... still i find some time to prepare for competitive exams...

Assuming i clear next years XAT/CAT which company do you suggest?? does 1 year of work at Mu Sigma help in anyway for my MBA in Marketing??

Hi buddy,
my work hours range from 12-14 hours on a normal day(traveling hours not included) to even more on bad days..and I need to come on weekends to finish the remaining work. Though this might not be with everyone, but generally work hours are really high here.

From MBA interviews point of view, Mu-Sigma is a fabulous company to work for as work is not normal IT one and it involves a hint of consulting, very difficult to achieve without an MBA from top 5-10 colleges. But it won't help you to learn marketing concepts per se. It will give you general business exposure. Rest is on luck. Say you get a marketing mix project which involves how companies should market, which medium to use, which customers to target,etc then you might get what you need. But if you get a Pharma project or technical project then things might be different.

One last suggestion, read a lot about analytics on net. If you feel you've interest in analytics then join it. Else no point. Also if you feel you can clear CAT/XAT without any further preps(as you might not get enough time here) or you're ready to slog in job on weekdays and for CAT preps on weekends(which is very tough. working non stop 7 days a week..needs a lot of motivation) and you feel analytics is something you want to explore then join.

Your first concern should be CAT preps at this stage IMHO. If you feel you're at a good level and just giving maybe mocks on weekend will suffice, then go ahead. Else stay wherever you are.

-ves-> insane working hours, work culture not grt(my personal opinion) and work(ie running the codes) might be repetitive in case of lot of projects.

It's a great learning opportunity but not a dream world. If you want to prepare for CAT I doubt you'll get much time to study for CAT.

PS- I love being part of this company except for maybe work culture but then I am not preparing for CAT(had prepared before joining it)

currently my pay is good but work is hectic and i hate it. I got two other job offers in hand

1. Mu Sigma Bangalore Business Analyst 3.3lpa

Ya its a great company indeed.
The dress code is formals during the weekdays except for Friday when you can wear casual.

i got placed in mu sigma over the summer. hope this info helps.

basic aptitude test , 20 questions,25 minutes. 10 questions roughly, are basic quant stuff, easy to do. there is on DI set, a graph, gotta answer about 5 questions, again very simple. rest are split between basic logic and verbal. both are pretty simple.
there is negative marking if im not wrong.

cut offs were pretty decent though in my college. they shortlisted about 70 to the next round.

standard GD, i recommend starting first in your GD if you're confident of the topic.

interview is purely HR/personal stuff. they ask you your aspirations, tell me about yourself etc, few people got case studies to answer. again pretty basic.

is there test on verbal ability or any type of technical questions for the test???

There are no technical questions.
The pattern has changed slightly this year.
There are 20 question over all and you get 25 minutes to solve them. The level is easy. This includes all the sections.
However there are questions from VA too

I am a B.Tech fresher who got placed in both MuSigma( Mu Sigma) & Cognizant Technology Solutions(CTS). I am confused where to go.I am resolved to do a mba after 1 or 2 of work experience. I heard there is lots of free time in cts n work time 8 hrs daily only.

Can anyone tell me about the compensation details in MU sigma they told they would give a hike of 5-7 lakhs in the second year and 8-10 lakhs in the 3rd year i would like to know if its true and can someone tell me their inhand pay for the first year in pm (strictly confidential).
Are there any onsite opportunities and will we be compensated for long working hours and is there a selection test after one month training ,

1. Compensation depends on your work ex and domain knowledge
2. 5-7 lacs cannot be hike, u do understand that. That can be your final package after the hike. (8-10 is a ridiculous expectation)
3. Onsite opportunities are abundant, assuming you are worth it.
4. Selection is based on your performance cum requirement basis.

1. Mu sigma is a great company to start your career with.
2. Work hours vary from project to project. 13-14 hours is not a daily thing.
3. Mu sigma is among the fastest growing private companies in the US. Attrition or no attrition its growing.
4. Compensation may not be the best among the industry and that's the reason most feel treated as dogs. There are other advantages like really smart people to work with.
5. For those just out of engineering colleges expecting consulting jobs... Have common sense!

I would say the working hours vary depending on the project and dead lines
Work is more of on the analysis side.Consultancy is some thing very different if you think consultancy in terms of companies like BCG , Mckinsey etc.
Growth prospects are tremendous.

Work culture is good, specially the hierarchy is totally flat, you are totally independent in your nature of work , work varies from reporting to consulting.
The people around you are gr8 as their background is ISB SPJAIN IIM XLRI etc.so you tend to learn a lot in this org.
Any day i would recommend anyone for Mu Sigma

I have 6.5 years of work experience spread across 4 companies. My last stint of 4 years was with a world class MNC. I am an engineer and have an MBA degree from a school in the top 10 list. Apart from my regular job, I taught CAT students at IMS and TIME and would have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours teaching over a period of 5 years. In the last 2-3 years, I have concentrated only on teaching and interviewing candidates at B schools in my plus time and have visited a ton of schools in the capacity of guest/part time faculty. I have also been working at Mu Sigma for the last 6 months.
Ive had vast experience coaching students vying for MBA seats and then interviewing them on behalf of the B school for adequacy. To me Deepak, your question is an open and shut case. Join Mu Sigma!!

To Madhus cons, I disagree with all of them:
1) I have examples from just my 6 months here where the company has made exceptions to answer to some of my familys personal asks
2) Attrition is no higher than the industry average. The correct picture is to look at the rate of growth of the company. The company has almost tripled in size in over a year, and thats going to continue
3) The managerial and leadership in my mind is a new era in the art of leading teams. Its frank, candid, not hierarchy driven and importantly, effective.
4) There is a sea of people that have been working at the company since its dawn. I for one am no job switcher. I moved here because I saw advantages over my previous position and have long term goals here
5) I have not seen, heard or been a part of anything unethical in the company. This is hearsay and nothing more
6) You can ask anyone from inside the company. You will get a vociferous reply in favor of the high quality of work done here. Thats the main pull for engineers like Deepak
At the end of the day, MBA or no MBA, a company is obviously doing something very very right if it has a success story to write. This company has not written just any success story, its written a phenomenal success story.

I'm an MBA with close to 6 yrs of experience in Strategy Consulting domain. I had a brief stint at Mu- Sigma and here's my take:

Pro's:

- If you are interested in numbers and would like to get a little bit of business understanding (mind it little bit is the operating word). Other fresh graduates may not agree, but that is the fact- then this is a good place to start
- If you are passionate about numbers and analytics, this is the place to be
- High intellectual capital across the organization gives you a nice academic environment
- High learning curve should keep your mind sharp
- Quick promotions if you are good
- Onsite opportunities

Con's:

Unfortunately this is the fact- this list is huge. Hence the decision is completely driven by passion and what you want to achieve.

- Very bad organization in terms of treating people. In fact no regard for people. Stories like the CEO telling people quitting within 3 months that "I didn't expect you to stay for more than 6 months, so work for as long as you want and go out"

- Across the industry Mu-Sigma is known for unethical work ethic
- They claim to be doing very high-end work, but most of the time almost 70-80% of the time you end up doing reporting work. Say analyzing a survey, preparing a dashboard for sales people, cross tabulating some results to see performance. Coming from consulting, all these information are "Nice to Have" and nothing of very high impact.
- Modeling does happen, but that too in pockets

I can go on and on, but from what I gathered having spoken to post MBA this is definitely not a place to come. Pre-MBA this is little different to your regular run of the mill IT jobs. But let me tell you very clearly. Here too you handle data, but you end up doing coding most of the time- Using SAS or VB. Just that you know what you are getting to compared to a large IT project as the team size is small.

Coming to your other question on MBA and ANalytics advantage. I believe it is your capability to project something and not the domain itself that gives you an advantage. Yes, more IT engineers are not preferred, but just coming from Analytics background is no guarantee to success. I have seen quite a few leave this company to join good MBA programs. Also have seen more people leave this company with dis-satisfaction and remorse.

I'm an MBA with close to 6 yrs of experience in Strategy Consulting domain. I had a brief stint at Mu- Sigma and here's my take:

Pro's:

- If you are interested in numbers and would like to get a little bit of business understanding (mind it little bit is the operating word). Other fresh graduates may not agree, but that is the fact- then this is a good place to start
- If you are passionate about numbers and analytics, this is the place to be
- High intellectual capital across the organization gives you a nice academic environment
- High learning curve should keep your mind sharp
- Quick promotions if you are good
- Onsite opportunities

Con's:

Unfortunately this is the fact- this list is huge. Hence the decision is completely driven by passion and what you want to achieve.

I work in a firm that completes with Mu-Sigma for business as an analyst. So my take on the same is as follows

- Every B school is looking for diversity in their batch profiles. This is based on people with different experiences bringing different view points to the classroom. With a analytical background (which fewer people have) instead of a software background (a much larger group of applicants) the odds of being selected in a B school interview are a little better. This does not mean that software is in any way a bad choice. If you are good you can excel in any company and that is what schools are looking for.

- Chances are that the work would be based on statistics and other mathematical models using client data. If your work keeps you using maths and you ensure that you do calculations in your head when you can, it might give you a edge in the quant sections. One thing I felt in the last CAT was that working with large data sets can help you get a feel for numbers. (approximations)

- As already mentioned, consulting hours might be higher on average with respect to IT but these are AVERAGES. There are outliers and it depends on your particular case. You could possibly get staffed on a light project in Mu-Sigma and you could possibly get staffed on a project that has gone crazy at CTS. But in line with the above two points, your odds of getting staffed on a project working 13 hours are a lot higher.

That said, its your call completely.

it depends on which proj u r into in any mnc... u may get into a proj in cts which requires 13-14 hrs work a day... so don't go by working hours... go fr mu sigma..... cts profile is s/w and it is same fr all IT mnc guys and not at all an distinctive advantage if u go fr mba..

Mu Sigma...you will find time out!!
