General Awareness is something that cannot be developed in a day. It takes time for building up your general knowlege. In my opinion try to tune into the daily new boardcast by All India Radio (Aakashwani) and chose a newspaper and read it daily. Do not break the routine and you will find yourself comfortable in handling 50% of questions asked in exam. For Marketing and Computers we have fellow members to explain the concept and Logic. Put your questions in the thread which will be answered and explained to you.

Question:
P, Q, R, S, T, V, W and Z are sitting around a circle facing at the centre.

Following are the steps to be followed to solve the question:

1) Let us put Z at position 1. Then as per question R is 3rd to the right of Z means that R is put at point 4.

2) Here Z itself is 2nd to the right of P means that P is two to the left of Z. It means we can place P at position 7.

3) Next line says S is not an immediate neighbor of Z and R which means that S cannot occupy the positions 2,3, 5,8. So the only position left for S is position 6.We place S at position 6.

4) Next hint says T is third to the left of S which means T can be place at third position left to S which is position 3.

5) Next it says W is not the immediate neighbor of S which means that W cannot beplaced at position 5 and place 7 is already occupied with P. Next it says Q is third to the right of W. Now the only places left for us to put W is 2 and 8. If we place W at 8 we find that we need to put Q at 3 which is already occupied with T hence W cannot be put at position 8.

6) Finally we put W at point 2 and Q at point 5 third to the right of W.

7) Now only one position left is 8 and unassigned digit is V hence V is put at point 8

I have just registered for SBI bank PO exam....... please provide me a list of websites from where i can download free material- like previous years papers, model sample papers, etc for preparation. or any particular book for the same.........also i wanted to know that in the application form that we have filled- there is no place for filling in relevant work experience.....Does that mean that while screening the candidates for the interview there will be no emphasis on the experience and only the wriiten test would be considered?

Some Basic Rules to be Followed while solving Syllogism:

1) All + All = All
All + Some = No
All + No = No

2) Some + All = Some
Some + Some = No
Some + No = Some Not

3) No + No = No
No + All = Some Not Reversed
No + Some = Some Not Reversed

Some Not means Some A are not B.
Some Not Reversed means Some B are not A

Important Conversion :
All converted to Some (Movement in forward direction only)

Some converted to Some (Movement in both forward and backward direction )

No converted to No (Movement in both forward and backward direction )

Syllogism is a topic which is asked for 5 marks both in Bank PO as well as Bank Clerical Exam. Here I will try to present you with the method to tackel the problem of Syllogism with some rules.

Question :

Statement : All Cats (are Bats.)
(All Bats) are Tables.

Conclusion : Some Tables are Bats . Some Tables are Cats.

Step 1 : First of check if the two sentences are properly aligned. In the question above the sentences are already aligned. Please remember if the two sentences do not have a common word then it cannot be solved.

Step 2: If you cancle out the terms given in brackets the new sentence will become " All Cats are Tables "

Step 3 : On converting " All Bats are Tables" we get " Some Tables are Bats = Some Bats are Tables".

Conversion is nothing but moving from one possibility to another one. Let me explain you with an example here : Suppose that "All heroes in Bollywood work in Movies" this means that among all of those people who work in movie some are hero. That means "some working in movies are hero" and Some heroes work in movies and vice verse. Similarily, if you say that "all leaders are corrupt" it means that some leaders are corrupt = some corrupt are leaders.

Step 4 : If we do not get any definite conclusion we got ahead to check if there is any complementary pair in the answer or not. By complementary we simply mean that there is equal possibility of both the conclusions happening. Also note that if one of the conclusion is proved and is definite than the possibility of Complementary pair becomes zero.

Note : The best of solving a syllogism problem is to move from Conclusions to the Question.

In the above question both the conclusions are valid and true.

Well now I would like to invite members with their view point on Syllogism along with their method to solve questions in least possible time.

The thread will more than serve its purpose if the experienced puys can share the strategy and breakup of the preparation plan upto july 24. There is a lot of confusion for a first timer like me, so looking forward to it.

Basically when we talk about collective preparation, the main objective I think should be gaining the "Momentum" and staying motivated. It is better to focus on few standard books/materials and then we can break it down to a daily workload(Say for tomorrow we have two chapters) and then discuss the problems here. Another method will be the sequential thing like we start from one topic and keep pushing everyone for best performance(No specific material quoted ). For specific questions we have the DT thread, were we post the important questions we come across.

So....

First a study plan. R.S.Aggarwal is a huge text, and revising or solving it cover to cover is out of question. So the question boils down to which chapters are needed. One glance at the past papers will help in this regard. This could be discussed and decided.

There are three more sections, but I think the most difficult one for some people will be the GK/Marketing/Computers. Materials are there for computer and Marketing but GK?

Then there is the DA-DI section which no one is taking about. I also have no Idea about this, but I guess CAT style preparation should hold good.

Lastly, the big problem with any PO level preparation plan -- Dearth of questions/Mock tests.

I guess these are the bigger questions that need immediate attention rather than solving specific questions here.

PS: Just my thoughts, no offense to anyone.

Well the thread is open for suggestions and inputs from time to time. My sole reason for providing the answers is to avoid seeing answers being posted in 2 3 pages. The sole purpose of providing the answers is that the members can solve the questions at their end and then tally the answers provided. In case any member find difficulty in solving any questions he can ask for explanation from the fellow members which will be provided without an delay. Also for some questions guys have developed strategies and know shortcut tricks. They are requested to come up with the same.

Believe me the more number of questions we practice as a group the more it become easy. This thread is open for discussions and suggestions.
Please contribute - A request.

There r some typical I/O problems where one can find out the Input !!

Not only input, in case you are given say 'n'th step of any arrangement and an earlier step is to be determined, the answer would be Cannot be determined.

As applying a bit of reasoning, we can get that for an earlier step or input, we'll have more than one set of arrangements, PROVIDED, number of terms in the arrangements is not less i.e. It should be more than 3 4. Practically questions which are asked from I/O have a considerably big number of elements or terms where predicting an earlier step or the input itself goes complex with more than one possible answer. Hope i made it clear.

I do not think we people will be so unlucky to be asked such typical questions. Jokes apart, please bring in those sort of typical questions.

What is Bank Rate ? (For Non Bankers) :
This is the rate at which central bank (RBI) lends money to other banks or financial institutions. If the bank rate goes up, long-term interest rates also tend to move up, and vice-versa. Thus, it can said that in case bank rate is hiked, in all likelihood banks will hikes their own lending rates to ensure and they continue to make a profit.

What is CRR (For Non Bankers) : CRR means Cash Reserve Ratio. Banks in India are required to hold a certain proportion of their deposits in the form of cash. However, actually Banks don't hold these as cash with themselves, but deposit such case with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) / currency chests, which is considered as equivlanet to holding cash with themselves.. This minimum ratio (that is the part of the total deposits to be held as cash) is stipulated by the RBI and is known as the CRR or Cash Reserve Ratio. Thus, When a bank's deposits increase by Rs100, and if the cash reserve ratio is 9%, the banks will have to hold additional Rs 9 with RBI and Bank will be able to use only Rs 91 for investments and lending / credit purpose. Therefore, higher the ratio (i.e. CRR), the lower is the amount that banks will be able to use for lending and investment. This power of RBI to reduce the lendable amount by increasing the CRR, makes it an instrument in the hands of a central bank through which it can control the amount that banks lend. Thus, it is a tool used by RBI to control liquidity in the banking system.

What is SLR ? (For Non Bankers) : SLR stands for Statutory Liquidity Ratio. This term is used by bankers and indicates the minimum percentage of deposits that the bank has to maintain in form of gold, cash or other approved securities. Thus, we can say that it is ratio of cash and some other approved to liabilities (deposits) It regulates the credit growth in India.

What are Repo rate and Reverse Repo rate?

Repo (Repurchase) rate is the rate at which the RBI lends shot-term money to the banks. When the repo rate increases borrowing from RBI becomes more expensive. Therefore, we can say that in case, RBI wants to make it more expensive for the banks to borrow money, it increases the repo rate; similarly, if it wants to make it cheaper for banks to borrow money, it reduces the repo rate

Reverse Repo rate is the rate at which banks park their short-term excess liquidity with the RBI. The RBI uses this tool when it feels there is too much money floating in the banking system. An increase in the reverse repo rate means that the RBI will borrow money from the banks at a higher rate of interest. As a result, banks would prefer to keep their money with the RBI

Thus, we can conclude that Repo Rate signifies the rate at which liquidity is injected in the banking system by RBI, whereas Reverse repo rate signifies the rate at which the central bank absorbs liquidity from the banks. (Was asked recently in Indian Overseas Bank Paper)

RBI asks banks to reimburse failed ATM transactions in 7 days

The Reserve Bank has directed banks to reimburse customers for amounts wrongfully debited from their accounts in failed ATM transactions within seven days of an account holders complaint or else pay a Rs 100 per day compensation.The time limit for resolution of customer complaints by the issuing banks shall stand reduced from 12 working days to 7 working days from the date of receipt of customer complaint, the RBI said in a notification.
The RBI further said that all customers are entitled to receive such compensation for delays only if a claim is lodged with the issuing bank within 30 days of the date of transaction.
The directive shall be come into effect from July 1, 2011.
