then go to the mba inst and talk to seniors
also have a chat with the teachers over there u'll be surpirised to see how frank and practical the teachers over there will be.They would be the best people to guide u

And, the grapevine adds they get to work 45hour weeks. The route is as simple as it gets. Get out of the IITs crack a 99.9x in CAT and get to IIM-A. Do major time studgiri there to get a CR in the top 10 and a CGPI in ManAcc which makes the prof revise the course content.

Welcome to the real world !! None of the above really happens (even if it does probabilistic value is too low to be counted to have any relevance). The point is, I seriously don't see what a B.Com graduate from DU can bring to the table in terms of experience, skills and knowledge to help McKinsey. But hey, I see this as an opportunity. I know what kind of job you are shooting at, and I don't think its a bad thing to start off with. Lesson No.1 : Be realistic. I wanted to be a pilot in school but settled for B.Sc. after 12th.

Now, with no offence to those who posted their views on the thread, I just want the guys who "love their job" to raise their fingers. Once again, Welcome to real world !! The truth is every job has its share of being the jizz-janitor. EVERY job. I know of the IIM-A grads who are stuck in jobs with great pay but social lives equivalent to the yeti. Who crib about how they "hate their job". But hey, they are sticking on because they still want to reach up to the elusive job which they feel will give them what they want. Lesson No. 2 : If you love challenges climb Mt.Everest. But most jobs involve a lot of routine stuff but how you get ahead depends on how enteprising you are.

You are probably around 20. You probably seriously started thinking about your career a couple of years ago. And whatever little you know is through what you have had. Try getting into a job which expects you to be on time, meet tight deadlines and be professional. Its an alltogether different ball-game. Once again, Welcome to the real world. I seriously think, you, or anyone in a similar position should give it a shot and get your hands dirty on the job-floor (literally speaking). Lesson No. 3: A truck is going to hit you enroute to office, nothing worse can happen by working in a real-job.

Think about what you have to loose ? A seat in the second rung instis. I reckon if you are good enough to crack it this year, you are good enough to crack it any year. I reckon the top 25 colleges are good enough for an admit - you are looking at 4000+ seats. I think anyone aiming to dream big should take a couple of shots at CAT ATLEAST before he hangs his boots. Haven't you heard about being second time lucky ? Even otherwise, the US Bschools are within your reach only after some realistic workexp at a place which has universal brand equity. Lesson No. 4: Nothing in the world is NOW or NEVER, except an old song by Elvis.

I don't know if I made sense, just want to you make your decision yourself by considering all this.

If i join McKinsey , i can again give CAT. Plus even if i dont, McKinsey work ex wud always help me in future.

Mate! Mickensey KC is not Mickensey and Co. Mickensey KC is a call centre and not THE big consulting firm that we dream of joining. Please do some research b4 joining this place in gurgaon. Trust me...they will not sponser ur higher studies.U will have to go 4 night shifts.
But again u can always take the CAT next year cos SCMHRD and SIMB..n other colleges that u r aiming for may not be able to give u the pay packet that MCKC will give. So my advise is if u r confident join MCKC and take the CAT next year n go to a good B-school. If u r not join SCMHRD and SIMB. MCKC will pay u a lot but will ruin ur career...no point sticking with that place for more than a year.

   2. This would be a good experience, giving you first hand chance to interact with consultants. Understand their thinking, approach to problem solving
      
   3. Gain valuable experience across industry verticals
      
   4. Stress management - This job will be quite stressful and I am sure you will come out of it as a better working professional
      
   5. The current profile on offer for you is not high end consulting..You can make that grade only if you have
      
      1. Qualifications
         
      2. Relevant work ex
         
      
      
   
   
2. Aim for an MBA two years down the line
   
   1. The institutes that you have on offer right now, are good but not the best
      
   2. With your relevant work ex you will bolster your chance in any good insti 2 yrs down the line
      
   3. There is an evident shift in inclination towards choosing candidates with experience in all b-schools in India
      
   4. Its still too early in life for you to make a compromise with your career. Aim for the best and give it all you have

A friend has been offered this post at MCKC. She is currently working as a s/w engineer at Nucleus software.
This will involve night shifts for two weeks every once in six weeks. However, she believes that being an MNC, the work culture will be better. Her timings will be bound to the work hours and not extend beyond. Her job at Nucleus Software is entirely a day job (no night shifts), but she travels 4 hours daily - at MCKC this will drop to half (due to distance). She is also working late nights at her current job due to excessive work load.

Just trying to do a pros & cons analysis.

I am not a regular on Pagal Guy but just bumped upon it today. Suprisingly, I read your thread and am hoping of being some help.

Firstly, I have just gotten a job with Mckinsey & Co (not MCKC) as an Research Analyst. I'll brief you A bit on myself. I am a computer engg. and have been working within Risk Practice at Ernst & Young for year and a half. I just recently interviewed at Mckinsey and have gotten the job, Yippie- I'll be working with Mckinsey, Mumbai.

I really can't give you 'an exact' advice on your dilemma, but I can definitely give you some feedback on the comments and problems I faced on making this job change.

The Job Role- To be honest, It isn't the best of jobs - but if you consider it to a IIM traniee in HLL travelling across villages selling toothpaste, or a techie at Infy coding till his brains fall out, or a trader losing hair everytime US Fed rates increase, a research job at Mckinsey shouldn't be THAT bad. It's the way you look at it!!

MBA- Mckinsey makes sense only if you plan to go abroad, else, the value add isn't very significant.

Feedback on MCKC - I've heard of a few guys not liking it too much at MCKC, but then I've heard of research analyst at Mckinsey getting picked by Infosys London, or studying at Ivey Leagues. So....

Personally, I plan to go to the US for my MBA...in a few years and for me, working at Mckinsey seems a real good bet. I've always inspired to be management consultant and a job like is like a dream almost coming true. (I'll get rid of the almost once I've done with my MBA and am a proper consultant with these guys)

But as a suggestion, whether you take the job or not, always always always work before your MBA, it makes a ton of difference. Being, an IIM Grad isn't the only key to success. Work makes you mature and take that maturity to your classroom - your going to give a B-school two years' of your life, make it count. Thats something I've learned out of experience.

I am going ahead and looking forward to my first day on 1st March. I am going to give off GMAT in August, impress Mackinsey bosses and get my recos and make that dream come true, hopefully.

I want to do an MBA abroad. As i have already posted before, i have not got calls from any good Bschools inindia this yr. ( except for SIBM, for which i am not going, and SCMHRD) Now i know that i can do much better than this. If i take up an MBA here, in one of the above avg colleges and then go abroad and do a second MBA, that doesnt make sense.

SO what i was thinking was to gain some work ex and then apply abroad ( or ISB). SO considering that i want to go abroad, what do u guys say now?

i'll try to solve ur dilemma and u solve my crisis!!! if u r sure that u wanna do ur MBA from abroad or ISB then go for job as u have no other option!!! how simple it was. But don't go to McKinsey with any high hopes. they sure have a gud work environment but this job profile will suck! May b initially u'll njoy it a lot as with job comes financial independence and a (false) sense of responsibility. but with the course of time this job profile will make u more eager to do an MBA and escape from there.
so till now we have seen only positive after effects of ur job. better go for it. but don't lose sight of ur long term goal: Doing an MBA from a reputed school. BOL.

I am too studying in a prestigious college in delhi university, and have got campus placement in a london based financial services company as a '"trader" of foreign exchange and european based stock markets(with a decent gross salary). This year b'coz of poor performance , I am able to get a call only from SPJIMR and expecting from NMIMS. So, I'm in a dilemma that even if i convert these calls , is it better to join these institutes or work for two years & then opt for IIMs AND ISB .?

i guess u r talkin bout GFH Trading. go for the job if u have stamina to sit in front of comps for 11 hrs at a stretch(i mean it). also theres little value addition to ur own profile after doing a job there. Money aint everything dude. rest u r in a better position to take a decision for urself. :)

Well I agree with some people here MCKC is no big deal. Its been going to B grade campuses of BSchools for recruitment and to A grade colleges of universities. However, if you get thru' to NMIMS it would be better to join rather than continue with MCKC. If you can't manage NMIMS go for MCKC get some experience and repeat CAT in '05.

I agrre with Saptarishi angd Subbu there.......althought the route of going to MC and then to A,B,C or to a global B-School seems very tempting that may not be that easy(unless u r absolutely sure that u can crack that CAT next yr.)...remember the no.of applicants is increasing every yr........I think the best way to go will be to get in touch wid a few ppl in the consulting field like PSychoD....they can uide u better........

Take my case.....last yr. had calls from IIMA and XIMB....converted XIMB but not IIMA....did not join cos I got a job wid Coca-Cola........no IIM clls this yr....LOL ...purple yogi is right.....although mba entrace exams dont require u to burn midnight oil....it is very diff to go back to books onve u start working..

Mckinsey is one of the best cos to come at SCMHRD.. U get to join there 2 yrs before+a chance to go for the BEST...(ur MCkinsey name will surely leverage u enuff). BTW nice way to boast.. am envying u already....Mckinsey is the way to go man,

IMCKC is a glorified call centre. What you do is called Backend Research Support, for eg. suppose a consultant in Mckinsey Global Strategy team needs some information for a industry he will call you up and then you have to google or from the Mckinsey database seach it and give it to him. After couple of months this work is mundane with "0" learning and in IIMs and universities abroad everyone knows the nature of MCKC. Hence, it will not help for you to work there if you wanna apply abroad.

Would second, third, and fourth it ....Mebbe you could ping a few folks who are in the industry ......try Psychodementia or hkannishot....PsychoD is at sapient and iirc, hkannishot is also a consult.....they might be willing to guide ya on nature of work there and its utility... :)

this is the time to believe in yourself:grab: . i suggest that it is good to join Mc Kinsey now bcoz it is giving u an opportunity to work with one of the best co's ..... and also u can appear for CAT next yr and also for other B School exams......i m sure u will crack them again. let us look to 2006 CAT it might happen that u have not got any calls from IIM's .......so u can continue with ur existing job or appear for XAT, NMIMS etc and do welll.......this time u have exp. also so u have more chance of getting in....... so u have nothing to loose but u will have to do justice to ur prep by giving it proper attention and time... u should be able to maintain ur present level.........

I have a couple of years work ex in GECIS myself - working for such a company does cunt...Dont leave this opportunity - it gives u a chance to understand the corporate world.

you can try for CAT later on. Besides, if you do decide to go for an MBA, placement shd not be a problem.

Listen buddy a bird in hand is worth two in the bush or whereever birds roost......Now since it ha salreday been mentioned by some of the junta that u hav not got calls frm that good instis and compared to other comapnies MC Kinsey ranks among the bset(though one member has posted some info abt tha partcular branch not being calle d4 IIMs..)..Still the company has gr8 name and since u hav opted 4 it u must know the resaons better.......Now wud like to share one of frens experience with u..He took CAT last year n got calls frm 5 IIMs n XLRI ..He had a job in mc kinsey as well,,but he spurne dit and converted only IIM I to which he did not join and worked in another co..This yr my buddy cud not manage any calls and now he is lamenting the missed mc kinsey....So buddy go 4 mc kinsey now get some work ex --18 or 24 months then crack CAT or XAT or any good B-school.....ATB 4 watever u decide...Ball is in ur court and will remain there unleess u kick it out--just pjing Puneet

A) If you think you are extremely bright and will crack the cat for sure next year take the MCKC job and apply to IIMs as you can always show to IIMs you were doing something constructive and earning lot of moolah, but beleive me it wont exceptionally help you candidature.

B) If you get through a Narsee Munjee or SIBM it would not be a bad option to take it up as the placements and the quality of the institutes has improved a lot over the years.

C) Sit for other interviews like Ernst and Young, KPMG, Axis(Part of Ambitt) etc. which are coming to DU campus for Analyst position in Consulting roles and crack them and work there for a couple of years, atleast you get to do constructive work and they are globally recognised in a positive way. And from the inside information I have all of them provide leave to give CAT or GMAT (And no I am not talking from a Bias coz I work in one of the companies)

I don't know why are you confused. Had I been in your shoes I would have chosen to work in McKinsey for atleast two years, get some valuable work experience and then go for MBA from a good institute. I will recommend you to go for McKinsey. Wishing you the very best of luck.

first things first. McKinsey Knowledge Center is different from McKinsey. Any good B School(read IIMA IIMB, IIMC, FMS, XLRI et al) does not even call McKinsey to its campus for placements. Why else will it go to a college in DU and not to some B school. Secondly job profile at knowledge center is also not very good. Data processing kind of job. The salary is very high even for such jobs there coz McKinsey has to keep up with its global reputation.

But since u don't have call from any good Bscooh(don't take that very harshly) it is better to take McKinsey and prepare for CAT again depending on whether u get time. coz u never know that even after doing MBA from SCMHRD after 2 yrs u may end up getting a job at McKinsey Knowledge center.

if you feel you have the potential to make it into the IIMs then take the job else choose the best b-school whose calls you can convert.

Go to Mc Kinsley no questions and aim again for CAT,if you are good enough for Mc Kinsley u r good enough for IIMs..remember though that you must guard against complacency or slipping into a comfort zone...it has to be IIM AB or C on Mc Kinsleys money

AFAIK It's the Associate Job of McKinsey the the Real glamarous one i dunno bout the KC one ,when Mckinsey had come to our coll for campus recruitment this year they had said that out of the 9 Indian's accepted at Harvard this yr
5 were Mckinsey associates .So for an International MBA i dont think the KC job counts for much its the Associate one that counts also i dont think McKinsey sponsors 75% of ur fees(r u sure??) it's only that they expect you to do an MBA after 3 yr's on the Job...(At least that's the criteria for the Associate job)
But all said and done i think the McKinsey Job is far better than SCMHRD or likewise coll cause even after doing ur MBA from these colleges u can only get into McKinsey KC.In India for the Consultancy posts(the coveted job's) Mckinsey only recruits from IIMs A,B and C and IITs(B,D,K,Kgp,M)...
I would advise take up McKinsey and keep appearing for CAT....

I think A B C ...... Z stick to McKenzie as long as you are not going to Wharton, kelloggs or harvard
