I m joining the much reputed college IRMA this year..one of the reasons being , with its focus on social aspects of development , it will help me in Civil Services preparation..and its a very good college no doubt , could somebody tell me when to start preparation for ias ...during the second year or after the course..

I want to know whether there is any coaching available for management for mains. And also from this year onwards there wont be any optional subject for prelims it will be General Studies + aptitude test ?

Visit upsc.gov.in.
there they have posted all the Mains and Pre 2009 papers.

Steps:
1. go to upsc.gov.in
2. On left hand side there is a link "previous year Q papers"
3.Visit 2009 exams
4.at the top its Prelims papers. Somewhere down there are mains paper as well "Civil Services (Main) Exam, 2009" :cheerio:

if your aim is only IAS then you have to be among the top 25 in the CSE merit list

There are 120+(inclusive of reservation) seats for IAS, some 20-25 for IFS and then a lot more for(~150) IPS.
So if u r under top 100, u can expect to get IAS for sure

I am about to complete my MBA this march from IMI, already placed in the core sector, and have only 3 credits and 3 days in a week to attend class..

I had an inner desire to be an IAS officer , but never thought it to be a practical one! But now i feel that it is a reasonable dream..My joining will be in may- june, so I have 3 months time. And after that, once started, i can keep the ball rolling and crack IAS in 2 years..

Subjects: Eco and Management.

My doubts/concerns:

1) Do MBAs also start from the lowest position after clearing IAS?
2) what about my education loan and other costs? My loan amount is 13 k, and the salary is 20 K i believe..

1)MBAs start from the lowest position only

2)Get ur loans and other costs repaid.
For general category , the age limit is 30 years.So write Civils wen u r 29. this way u get 2 attempts at it and a serious candidate coupled with your aptitude and combination of Eco+Management should be able to crack it in 2 attempts.

Keep preparing meanwhile in whatever little time u hv got.

Eco is a good choice but u will have to read a lot of new(+ interesting ) stuff. Just don't lose hope. :cheerio:

You are in 1st year MBA, in an IIM and your fellow students get time to prepare for Civil Services??

I am in first year of my MBA. Lots of my college friends are preparing for IAS. Sometime in past I also had a dream to take IAS examination, but then I switched to MBA. But from last few months I am again inclined towards IAS and I have started preparing for it.

Could anyone guide me, it is good to go for IAS now after having secured admission into an IIM. Would it be worth enough? And what subjects should I choose (I am production and industrial engineer)?

I'm pursuing my MBA from an IIM. I would like to know the future of getting into the Civil Services ... like i have heard that people leave the civil services posts and come to do MBA. so am just wondering what to do?

Civil Services like IAS, IFS etc look lucrative - but is it worth it after an MBA from an IIM? i'm not looking at the monetary benefits only .... things like prestige, status etc also matters!! :innocent:

me too in the same boat. graduated from an IIM 2 years ago.. and i really love my job.. however i've always wanted to join the IAS, but given everything (Especially the monetary benefits) the decision becomes tougher everyday!

(but tough though it is, it is a decision i have made! im giving it a serious shot!)

anyway to respond to your question, we had an OB prof in second year who was also a faculty at LBSNAA and i had told him about my IAS aspirations back then. he mentioned that there were several people in that batch who were IIM graduates. so getting into the IAS after an MBA is definitely not something impossible. my take is that if you're motivated enough, and willing to give it a good enough shot, i would like to believe you stand a better chance because you obviously have the attitude required to compete in a national exam thats as competitive (atleast thats what i tell myself everyday!):biggrin:

I just wanted to know if any other MBA student/aspirant/pass-out has similar aspirations and would like to discuss about the pitfalls and other matters regarding the Management subject optionals for IAS (UPSC - CSE exams).

If anyone knows someone who has done an MBA and then cleared UPSC, pls let us know on this thread. I am serious about it and hope there would be many people who would love to contribute to their NATION even after doing their MBA's also.

I have written coz this question always comes to my mind
I want to quote 2 instances to make it clear what actually is the matter i want to drive home to u

1. After graduating from tier- 1 colleges a student must have a freedom to choose his/her calling...but what happens when you invest 11 lakh plus for that coveted degree?
you become single minded about passing out and getting into a job that gives u bang for the buck..a coupla years into that kind of job and you dont want to get into the thing that u once desired
After going through the two years of rigorous course lets say xyz doesnt remain that dreamy eyed college goer who once wanted to be an i-banker...

he now wants to give back to the society...his idea of doing this is to utilise his knowledge and experience in a place where the whole country benifits, (kinda humble gift to the idea that is INDIA)

lets say he wants to work in an institution like Reserve Bank of India, or some similar type of Institution.or lets say wants to be a researcher/academic
he will hesitate to take this up, partly coz he has spent a fortune on his education...and it will take a long time to recover the investment he made on studies
if he takes a decision of working in corporate domain recover costs and then revert to such a career...its possible , but whats the guarantee that after 4-5 years in the corp glitz he will stiil be earnest to take up a job in govt sector (and more about this in case 2)
RESULT...a gud banda lost by the society

now what is to be blamed the higher fee prices or the low salary in the govt.
the problem is that the fees get decided by the corporate placement figures and the colleges train students only to get into corporate world

i think there should be a system in which students shall or shall not be reimbursed fees acoording to the area in which they work...those entering the govt sector may sign a bond of five years and get their fees reimbursed,.... lot of options

2) One never heard of entities like RBI, NSE, BSE, SEBI.etc picking up students from premier colleges..whats wrong dont the best institutions in our country deserve the best minds to shoulder responsibilities...or is it that the babus they recruit from exams r the only people who can to take all the important decisions

so if an MBA or a mid career professional wants to enter into these , he has to sit and prepare 4 a public level exam..clear it and join the starting ranks and in the process lose many years of seniority.
why isnt there an option even for highly successful mid-career professionals to join...


Analyze this: law doesnot make it mandatory for ministers to be well educated and those who run the ministeries are people who had cleared certain public exam after their graduation..so where r the highly educated in the govt domain.
So at the top virtually there is no place that a highly qualified person
Many Babus study besides working and may even go to Phd. Level but what do they do with that


People crib that country is not getting its due when it invests crores on higher educationbut what if we look from the above perspective
Dont you think all the important positions in the country r in the hands of the IAS lobby and the like
Agreed IAS people are highly competent and it is they who have made great contributions in bringing India this far but there should be openings for good people at all levelsafter all whats wrong with this

I am doing PGDM focussed in Oil and Gas from Institute of Petroleum Management Gandhinagar...Batch 2007-09...and will appear in UPSC 2010...after doing 1 year rock solid prepration...The thread has pulled me back to the streets of Moh Maaya...PG......I have an advice for all Managers, don't go for Management as a subject...the syllabus of Management in UPSC is very fast. You may have covered all that in your MBA but it isnt possible that you are expert in all Finance, Operations, Quants, Economics etc...It is preferrable to choose that subject for the Mains which you can also take for Prelims...My subjects are English Literaure and Public Administration...I preferred Public Administration over Sociology as it helps in G.S. paper...I believe that success is the result of choices one makes....Anyways, best of luck to everyone on this thread....Feel free to PM me for any important info required, as I stroll in PG less often....There are some important links for everyone related to UPSC...And I congratulate bdebbarma for the thread

It all depends on your personal goals, lets do a Cost-Benefit analysis .....(OM effects)

1. Monetary: No benefits , infact there is a huge negative opportunity cost. say ( 2.5-12 = - 10 lacs pa in 1st yr itself)

2. Social: Immeasurable benefit.
Respect, awe, power, position, contacts, etc

3. Career: Most satisfying and challenging, responsibilties are larger than in any pvt org.
Also gives a huge advantage compared to ur peers in case u want to move back to Pvt industry in a leadership role after some yrs.


As far as one of our prof here told us, a guy here at L had opted out of th e final placements itself last year just because he wanted to be only in IAS!! So , finding out that its not that uncommon for IIM graduates to join IAS and sacrifice huge loads of money they might earn.


See for urself...what u want to achieve in ur career.
As for me, I want to join IAS , be part of development of the state, then after 15-20 years in service move back to Industry/enterpreunership.

What exactly is IFS ?
Also isn it too risky opion (I mean IAS) aftr yr Btech + 2 yr workX + MBA Coz I have heasrd horrer stories of guys giving up 3 - 4 precious years of their life for this exam and eventually end up with nothing...

Management is not available as an optional subjet in prelims.But one can take this as one of the optionals in Mains.I've heard about people, who cracked Civil Services after passing out from IIMs.
Every year a good no of students qualify Civil Services by taking Management as one of their optionals.

As far as economics goes, I guess the economics that IAS demands is much more in depth compared to what we have done in the first year as one or two subjects.

r u an MBA yet?

pls read the notifications in the Employment News or in the UPSC website.

Management as a subject is allowed in the MAINS paper of IAS exam.

But to qualify for mains u have to give the PRELIMS , where u can take Economics or Commerce etc which are taught in 1st yr of MBA ;-)
