Hello. I am a Chartered Accountant with 21 months work-ex in Deloitte, Audit. Looking forward to pursue MBA this year with just 92%ile with me. That can get me in IMI or Great Lakes (PGPM). What kind of role do consulting firms offer (finance domain) in these colleges?

I am from NIT Surathkal currently working with bank of america...is there any consulting certification i can do like we have finance certification cfa..? i hve heard CMC bt then where to start off with registeration n stuff and also smwher its mentioned u need to take up one real time case study involving clientsand solve it and present it...how to do such a thing...? and any other certification in consulting...management consulting i mean..?

@TORNADOMBA I don't think it would be very tough for you to break into big 4 consulting firm. Healthcare sector is booming and so is the health care consulting. Apart from the MBA degree and a solid resume, you also need to have a good networking to get a call in any of the big 4 because employee referrals is a good way to get resources for these consulting firms.
Your 6.5 years of prior work-ex in healthcare sector would surely make your way a lot more easier :)

tornadomba: You can check out IMS Consulting which is the consulting arm of IMS Health. It competes with MBB directly in healthcare. Apparently they are ramping up their team in India. ZS Associates can be another good bet. The hard truth is that tier 1 is unrealistic, consulting arms of big 4 auditing will take you, but not give enough value to your pre-mba experience.. Accenture's healthcare team can be another decent bet I would think..

Some PG ID you have !!!

Certifications do not really help in consulting. The big consulting firms hire MBAs from the big ones ( i.e. top 10 ) and undergrads from the IITs, BITS and top 2 NITs. So basically, one has to get into a top bschool and get very good grades to be able to get a shortlist.
Looking at the strat consults, they do not hire much in India compared to US/Europe. Consults esp Strategy Consults are uber-stringent in their hiring here.

For example the top US bschools like Harvard, Wharton, Kellogg, Booth, NYU, MIT etc send about 21-26% of their batch in consulting which includes MBB, Accenture, Deloitte, Booz Allen, Monitor Group, Parthenon etc. Top european bschools send close to 45% of their batch in consulting.

Functional is more related to giving functional specifications and testing

Technical is related to actual development

First answer is applicable to this also , there nothing as just "advising" , you need to have solid knowledge to be just "advising"

Yes and Most of the Major IT firms have a IT consulting arm ..

Will try to answer to the best of my knowledge and a bit of discretion. The role is pretty good but the salaries are not that great if you are posted in India. However if you get a onsite opportunity in US/Europe salaries are comparable to some of the big finance/consulting companies outside.

Work I heard is good and so is the growth. In a way I think its similar to Delloitte Strategy and Ops profile or the profile offered by Accenture management consulting. Hence scope for switch to big 4 is reasonably good.

Can someone throw some light for Associate Consultant position offered by infosys across B Schools ....

Depends on your role with the chemical software company. If its only a coding kind of role it wont add much value if you want to switch to consulting later.

On the other hand business analytics forms the base upon which consulting industry works. So such a role will be helpful later.

Consulting is such a vast field, you can have any type of consulting whatsoever !!!
Coming to your point. I can think of Project Finance consulting teams that major consulting firms like Accenture etc have. There are also other smaller consulting companies which deal with Project Finance consulting.
There are various other areas where Fin and consulting work in tandem

What is the job of a pre sales and business development person in IT.
Are there some roles where i can do mkting in IT? By that I do not mean business analyst role for an ERP system. But actual marketing in IT firms or oprations in these firms.

Marketing or rather i will say Business Development in IT can be divided into 2 parts:
Pre Sales and Sales

Sales guys are ones who make cold calls, try to get appointment with clients, pitch in for their companies ( might or might not with pre sales guys ) , have high domain expertise as well as client facing experience and eventually lead to Business Development.

Pre Sales people have following responisbilities. Following is a small set and if one has potential, he can be accompanying sales people and might be driving the entire approach to pitch before client.

These are:
Demand generation by understanding customer requirements, identifying and building partnerships and helping solutions teams build specific solutions
Manage customer bids end to end until handover to delivery
Customer Requirements understanding for an RFP
Key drivers and challenges identification
Solution conceptualization
Bid management and management and driving of multiple teams and experts to build a synchronized and coherent response
Bid defense and customer front end as needed
Self motivated and independent worker
tracking of every process till project finally starts
Take ownership of RFI/RFP and show measurable results

Marketing in its literally meaning is confined to identifying the places where IT companies can associate with them to showcase their products/services/technology strengths/major achievements to the potential and existing clients. eg: Company good in CLoud computing can prefer to be the sponsor of any major event on same where companies that can benefit from cloud computing are coming. Also, social media work comes under this head.

Dont go by movies. The job of an investment banker is a stressful job. And as far as your love for travelling is concerned, you will get to travel a lot more in case you get into marketing,consulting. CFA is not a two month job. You will have to slog it out. There are three exams and they are quite demanding when it comes to time and effort. Use these two months to analyse all your options carefully and choose your path further.

I have a decent 5 and half years experience in Accenture as an SAP Business Intelligence consultant. Have decent acads, am an engineer from R V College and have a score of 700 in GMAT. Since I have already worked for a really long time in this industry, switching to another industry, seems futile (although personally I would have loved to move out of IT) Now in my long tenure in Accenture I have been involved with technicalities of software implementation and project delivery and have never actually seen work beyond that.However, I have had decent interaction at client site and love client facing roles, rather than just technical configurations.

Now I would like to bring in some change here, and am trying to understand what are the other roles that a profile like me can look into.

Hey Ankit. You can take the NCFM certifications offered by NSE for basic knowledge.
CFA and FRM are two advanced certifications. CFA is a more comprehensive certification that covers a wide array of topics whereas FRM is more pertinent to Risk Management.

Your Business analyst profile may not directly help you in the Finance domain per se. But yeah, it would count as experience if needed by some companies later.

What do I need to do apart from the regular curriculum to make my profile more acceptable for the above sectors(for consulting & marketing roles)
For the above mentioned career pah, which stream is more suitable for me
1) Strategy+Marketing
2) Operations+Marketing

Also, which Institute among MDI & NITIE provide better opportunities to change the domain after having this much work-exp' !

Marketing is very good at MDI and Operations at NITIE.

And these specializations like Marketing/Ops/Fin are meant to give you an idea into the processes. If you notice, they are not industries. Marketing can be for an FMCG/Bank/Insurance/Telecom etc. Operations can be for a Bank/Telecom/Manufacturing/Retail etc

So essentialy you are asking which 'process' should you specialize in to get into which 'industry' . Its a little inconsistent.

Ok I am not a consultant but can answer to the best of my knowledge. If you want to move into management consulting MBA is a must...atleast at some point of the career. BCG and other big consultants as I said recruit from IIT's as well but you reach a glass ceiling at some point of time and need to do an MBA to probably move further.

As far as IT consulting is concerned there is a functional consultant and technical/implementation consultant. The functional consultant is the one who designs or decides how to design the solution and gives it to the implementation guy. In most of the cases the functional consultant is an MBA. However you can also become a functional consultant if you have got an expertise on how to do the job through experience. In short it takes time. MBA is a shorter and faster route.

Job Profile of a Management Consultant
Typical Day:
Most consultants begin around 9 in the morning and usually leave the office by 10-11pm. The day begins with checking the voicemails and replying to emails followed by brief news update. Meeting with client teams, presentations and analysis of facts and figures consumes most of the day. The day is generally hectic. In most firms, consultants spend 4 days of the week (Mon-Thrus) at the client site and Friday at their own office but the travel policy varies from from to firm to firm and some may require travel to client site only At the beginning and at the end and occasionally in between if required, Usually, consultants work for 60-80 hours a week.
Who hires:
Top strategy consulting firms include McKinsey and Co., Boston Consulting Group, Bain and Co., Booz Allen Hamilton, ATKearney, Delloite and Monitor Group. But besides them also there are several other smaller firms.
McKinsey is considered the most prestigious.

What the interviewers look for in the candidate:
Good communication skills are a must. Most big firms recruit only the graduates of top universities. Analyticity, ability to work in teams and leadership qualities are given a lot of importance. Prior experience in business world is a huge advantage specially with a strategy consulting firm therefore management consulting interns are readily recruited. MBA is a must to get to the associate level and higher. Analysts are mostly high academic achievers from top undergraduate programs. The recruit process strongly focuses on case solving ability. International certifications like CFA are an added advantage.
Salary and Bonus:
The salary is very attractive. The base salary is around 10-12 lacs at the analyst level and bonuses, though not significant at this level, can add another couple of lacs. Associates can expect to earn 18-22 lacs depending on the firm plus significant bonuses.
Positives:
Huge salaries. Opportunity to work with top management of the client company. Opportunities to travel. Enjoy the luxuries of the best hotels and business class fying. The frequent flyer program ensures you never have to buy a ticket for personal travel. The work never gets mundane since you keep on shifting from one project to another every few months and thus gather a lot of experience in several industries.
Negatives:
Involves a lot of travelling which may take a toll on personal life. Working hours may be highly unpredictable and you may be called back from a holiday or at 2 am and you can be expected to work on the weekends also if required.
Career Progression:
Most people entering as freshers start as trainee but if you are a CFA level 1 or higher you may directly make it to the associate level.

1. Analyst: Generally undergraduates are recruited at this level. Typically they work on preparing presentation material, analyzing and gathering data or sometimes photocopying and faxing documents for the associates.
   
2. Associate: Mostly, this post is filled by MBA graduates but sometimes an exceptional analyst may be promoted to an associate. The work involves analyzing business of the client, valuing companies, proposing solutions in the team and presenting them to the client and work closely with the partners.
   

Associates after about 6-7 years may become Vice-Presidents and then Partners after another 10 years or so but most of them move to senior management positions in the industry. Many McKinseyites have been the CEOs of the Fortune 500 companies.

Grad - B.Tech(Electronics) NIT Surat 6.13 CGPA (2009)

I've had a lone call from TISS(HR) course for two consecutive years and have failed to convert it. Below is the summary of my 4 attempts :

CAT '08 - QA(96.7).......VA(75).....DI(64).....OA(89.8 )
CAT '09 - QA(94.3).......VA(72).....DI(65).....OA(87.7)
CAT '10 - QA(65.x).......VA(78 )....DI(90).....OA(82)
CAT '11 - QA/DI(77.6)..VA/LR(41)...............OA(64)

For the past two years, I've been trying to concentrate on getting into a top 15 B-school but the efforts have not been fruitful.

From what I understand, even if I enter a good B-school, I would be offered an IT profile both during summers as well as final placements.

So at this juncture, I wish to ponder seriously on the kind of career path I would like to choose, with or without an MBA.

From what I've known through various sources, I would like to make a career as a consultant in Strategic Consulting firms (preferably the BIG 4). I know it could take time and I'm ready to slog for it. But I still don't know the exact path which would help me reach this destination.

Also, I like to believe that Strategic Consultants/Analysts basically do problem-solving by advising the client suitably. I would be grateful if you could please throw some light on the precise work profile of a consultant in the Big 4 firms.

From this year onwards, I wish to improve/change my profile in a way which would help me during my interviews during admission, summers as well as final placements. I do not wish to make a career in IT Sector and I'm looking for a change of sector. Some of my friends are working in Mu Sigma Bangalore, some have switched to other firms from Mu Sigma and I'm not really sure whether that profile would help me in my career plans. I would like to work towards making a profile which would see me shortlisted for colleges like ISB and SP Jain and good B-schools abroad, at a later stage perhaps.

Could sm1 pl suggest me sth in this regard.

I am an ex-EY and I would like to tell you that India practices of EY and other Big 4's (KPMG< Deloitte and PwC) are in no way comparable to the consulting Big 4s (Mck, Booz, Bain and BCG). And the consulting Big 4's have a policy NOT to recruit people who have worked with audit Big 4's in a consulting role.

So don't target audit Big 4's, projects can get cheap, and you can very easily get frustrated after a point. But yes if consulting is what you want, and IIM A is what you dont have, then u need to settle for these.

Might agree to quite a lot of things written here But AFAIK, this info is incorrect: "consulting Big 4's have a policy NOT to recruit people who have worked with audit Big 4's in a consulting role"

Live case in point is my manager in EY who joined McKinsey last year. A counter argument could be that its a stand alone case, but atleast there appears to be no such (strict) policy

So, if McKinsey is your only Nirvana and one of the Big 4 Professional Services Firm (not a Big 4 Consultancy Firm ) is the lone boat you get first, just hop on...you never know, it might just take you to the shore!

I have also somewhat the same concern. I am right now working in top vlsi company having exp of 3.5 years. But I have low acads 10 = 72 and 12 = 76 75 in grad.

what profiles are offered in companies like ENY , Deollite etc and the salary range.

I would also like to know the prospect of breaking into the top management of any company after 5-10 years in consulting, as that is my ultimate aim.

Can you also suggest some certifications or courses to improve my profile.
Right now I ahve got into nmims core .

I am a fresh mechanical engineering grad from BITS Pilani.During campus placements I got job offers from MUSigma and Praj Industries .The first was a BA profile and the second was a core mech profile.I think I am more intersted in the BA profile but I am from a non IT profile and my coding skills are non existent.Will that be a problem?Also wat kind of ppl find working at Musigma difficult?I am not talking abt der working hours.Dat is fine with me.
At Praj the pay is quite a bit more ,at least for the first year.But information abt work culture and growth in that company is very hard to come by.Can sum 1 shed sum light abt dat company?
I am from a lower middle class family and hv to pay back my education loan.Despite this I would like to work as an analyst since growth curve in this field is steeper .Wat skills make sum 1 fit or unfit for the analytics industry?And how much of atechnical expertise do u need to be succesful at it?

I have gone through the whole of 52 pages in this thread but couldn't find a single candidate interested in Public Sector consulting which includes Politics/Public Advocacy/Regulatory and Public Affairs.

I completed my engineering in 2011 and took up the LAMP Fellowship (Legislative Assistant to MP) where I was assigned to an MP for a year and did parliamentary research- speeches/debates/standing committee work/questions etc.

Now, there is a Tier III firm which is interested in hiring us for the Public Affairs domain.

My Background:
B.E.: 73.5% (2011 passout): RGPV University, Bhopal
XII: 85%
X: 93.2%
Extra-currics: Plenty in college: College Mag Founder and Editor in chief/Microsoft Student Partner etc
Currics: Couple of olympiad positions etc

My question is:

1) With only a single year of exp though relevant work ex for this field, will I be able to get into a Tier III firm-"Clients come with a solution and because they lack time and resources, they want the firm to do it" as per a definition given out during the earlier pages.

2) Should I apply and would I be able to realistically be able to get a job in the Public Affairs division in the top Consultancy firms as per Vault Ranking

3) Seniors have mentioned that the interviews are case study based. What kind of case study or what kind of interview questions should I expect for the Public Affairs domain? How should I prepare?

The job description would be something do with research writing in the beginning for six months and then shifting to team based projects which focus on the rules and regulations/govt policy/court judgements in a particular field and then come out with an advocacy or a strategy to do business.

Can anyone pls answer my questions?

Still,I am interested in consulting job.

I am also quite aware of the grades,analytical mind & the ability to analyse a specific sector like automobile,healthcare etc.that consultants are supposed to possess.

This year I will be starting my MBA at IIM L.
Big 4 consulting companies are regular recruiters to IIM L now...(sigh)

I need advice from seniors & consultants who are active on this thread regarding the kind of electives that I should choose to make my profile relevant for a career in consulting.Do I need to take credits from different specialisations or what?If yes,then is strategy an important part of it?

You should consult an IIML senior for the exact pedagogy being followed at IIML but as far as I know most of the good colleges follow a case based learning approach. So even though its a marketing,operations,finance or strategy course you derive your learning by solving cases, sometimes alone and sometimes working in groups and coming out with a feasible and most appropriate solution.

Although I understand your interest in the field you should first try to do well in your first year at IIML where all the subjects would be compulsory. I am in second year right now and I talked to one of your professors recently about the query you posed about subjects. For consulting/gen mgmt profile you should try to take the core subjects from all areas with a focus towards strategy in general.

There are ample resources in the internet about cracking case based interviews and you seniors at IIML should inform about the same when you join L.

Now i have taken admission in SCIT for MBA in IT 2012-2014 as i m interested in IT..now i want after 2 yrs a job which offers me a profile of business analyst some what like client facing n business development Or Consultant....Now what all skill do companies look in candidates for offering these type of profile ,,can being a fresher i can get this from SCIT....also i have bookish knowledge abt smme lanuages, database, guide me to prepare myself for the next 2 yrs....n how i know exp for 6 months dosnt counted but gve me some advice how can i use it infront of other fresher from clg....

Hi Adi,
You should be able to get a BA position after 2 years. Even if you do not get that right after college, you can get that within 6 months of your joining after MBA.


Key Aspects

1. Understanding business processes and technical complexities
   
2. Ability to see the bigger picture
   
3. Excellent Communication skills. That does not mean superb, fancy english....it means you can get your point across exactly the way you had thought of it. Also very good listening skills ( very important for BA )

Yup it is into Finance function effectiveness & entails settiing up finance function for start-up & local entities of foreign comglomerates in India.
