Does experience(post MBA) with Deloitte/EY/PWC/KPMG help make an entry into firms like Mck,Bain,Booz... Whats the difference between the consulting work done by the advisory arms of the Big 4 audit firms and the McK/Bain/Booze/AtK,etc..,

Hi Trenikz

The answer for McKinsey for your first question is NO. McKinsey practices extreme elitism in recruitment, generally hires from elite campuses. Majority of McKinsey consultants (Associates) are fresh out of B-Schools. Very few consultants would have worked for players like Deloitte/EY/PWC/KPMG. Even if there are consultants with such experience, they have had education from the B-Schools from where McKinsey hires.

For your second question, McKinsey generally works with the biggest brands and works with CxO's and boards of the company. It does well in the strategizing part but does not have much competence in implementation part. Some typical examples of McKinsey's studies would be:

* A new CEO hires McKinsey to develop 5 year strategy and then presents the same to the board (Credibility of McKinsey is very high at board levels)
* A Business Unit head expanding into new market would hire McKinsey to develop a blueprint of entry but would hire niche/local players for execution phase; McKinsey might oversee the execution phase

However, the other players might also undertake similar projects but core competence and brand perception of these players differs. Read through these two articles on consulting studies in Ireland (Same market and same client but you can sense the difference in the nature of work delivered by McKinsey and the other Big 4) Article 1 on McKinsey work and Article 2 on Big 4 (Keep an eye on mooooneyyy involved here . MckInsey earns 90K per week while others earn 1.2m for 8 weeks. McK charges nearly 6 times Big 4)

@ Monil: Would appreciate your inputs on the question as you are a part of consulting industry.

P.S: I am not stating that McKinsey is better. The work at Big 4 audit firms can also very interesting. At the end of the day, I think its work which matters the most rather than the brand you work for.
