Or one can set target for the big 4 and plan a switch later ? I know I intend to work in consulting domain only. Hi Pat,

Apologies for the delay.

Two important observations which might help you make your decision.

I know I intend to work in consulting domain only

As per me you should reconsider your preferences and seek opportunities to broaden your opportunity set. Limiting your career options to only consulting (remember consulting is small industry and hence has limited opportunities) might not work in your favor especially in a not so good placement scenario. One always need to have a Plan B.

Two very important things to consider:

- Value addition: Over the period of one year consider the value addition you might have joining a b-school versus taking a break to crack CAT next year and make the decision. Merely increasing a 1% over one year is not a value addition. If you plan to take a break, think of more ways to add value like promotions in your current role, international travel etc.

- Joining IIM A/B/C: Selection of schools should not be based on short term returns. Even if you were to join these schools, it does not guaranty you a place with McKinsey, BCG or Bain. You might well end up in a IT firm from IIM A/B/C. Consider this scenario as well.

IIM K is not a target school for McKinsey. However, it is a part of pool campus for McKinsey. BIG 4 do visit IIM K but a move from BIG 4 to MBB (McKinsey, Bain and BCG) is very difficult.

2) To be part of McKinsey from IIM K, one needs to have exceptional academic credentials or very good experience. This applies much more to grads from schools which are not the primary target schools for McKinsey. Schools in this list include IIM K, JBIMS, SP Jain etc. Typically, IIT graduates from these schools make it to McKinsey. After work experience, your quality of experience might further complicate the matter.

Some routes you might take to make it to MBB:

1) Work for strategy or internal consulting divisions of large MNCs especially large banks

2) Work for similar organizations like Monitor, Roland Berger, LEK Consulting. Many Monitor associates are being recruited by BCG, AT Kearney etc after it got acquired by Deloitte.

I what 'sectors' do they offer profiles, i mean are they majorly financial consulting? Should one specalise in finance to get into these firms ? What are the other sectors in which they offer profiles ? Iam more intrested twoards SCM!!

I have about 1yr 8 months work ex in the manufacturing sector(fortune 200 Electrical and automation company)....I want to switch to Supply Chain Consulting (I have over one year work ex in SCM in my current company...but thats an operations role.....nothing close to consulting)....Currently I am preparing for MBA entrance exams (gave GMAT-scored 720....now slogging it out for the CAT)...I have average acads (90+ %ages in X, XII....GPA 7.96..Electrical Engineer)...is there ANY possibility of switching to a supply chain consulting role pre-MBA....and for that matter even POST MBA? @TORNADOMBA I don't think it would be very tough for you to break into big 4 consulting firm. Healthcare sector is booming and so is the health care consulting. Apart from the MBA degree and a solid resume, you also need to have a good networking to get a call in any of the big 4 because employee referrals is a good way to get resources for these consulting firms.
Your 6.5 years of prior work-ex in healthcare sector would surely make your way a lot more easier :)

tornadomba: You can check out IMS Consulting which is the consulting arm of IMS Health. It competes with MBB directly in healthcare. Apparently they are ramping up their team in India. ZS Associates can be another good bet. The hard truth is that tier 1 is unrealistic, consulting arms of big 4 auditing will take you, but not give enough value to your pre-mba experience.. Accenture's healthcare team can be another decent bet I would think..

Certifications do not really help in consulting. The big consulting firms hire MBAs from the big ones ( i.e. top 10 ) and undergrads from the IITs, BITS and top 2 NITs. So basically, one has to get into a top bschool and get very good grades to be able to get a shortlist.
Looking at the strat consults, they do not hire much in India compared to US/Europe. Consults esp Strategy Consults are uber-stringent in their hiring here.

For example the top US bschools like Harvard, Wharton, Kellogg, Booth, NYU, MIT etc send about 21-26% of their batch in consulting which includes MBB, Accenture, Deloitte, Booz Allen, Monitor Group, Parthenon etc. Top european bschools send close to 45% of their batch in consulting.

Functional is more related to giving functional specifications and testing

Technical is related to actual development

Typically MBAs get into functional consulting but tech knowledge is also necessary .

. Just advising or advising + implementation??

First answer is applicable to this also , there nothing as just "advising" , you need to have solid knowledge to be just "advising"

Yes and Most of the Major IT firms have a IT consulting arm ..

Digital Transformation is the key driver for IT consulting

Process excellence ,as the word suggests points improving effectiveness and efficiency of process with IT solutions

Technology Strategy is more related to digital transformation with changing market dynamics , it has become essential for companies to evolve technologically
