I am working with TCS,on bench since 2 months(may get project in few days),almost nill extra curiculars.I have joined TIME,to prepare for CAT 2013.If I get good CAT score,what are my chances of getting calls from IIM(which all IIM'S?) and converting them(if i perform good in GD/PI)? Also i am good in VA,LR and have good calculation skills.decent in quant.How many hours will have to put in during weekdays and on weekends? Also i have heard 3 years work ex is the best,after that it's not that good.So considering that i think i have only two shots at IIM'S(2013 and 2014) ??

@losetowin I'm not sure of that. If it has some official signature attached then it might be accepted. But then there are chances it might not be accepted also. Depends on the particular institutes' discretion. You can also show your joining letter (with DOJ) and last 3 months pay slips to show work experience.

Thanks a lot for your detailed reply. I totally agree with you, all this good/bad/boring is a subjective perceptive. And I agree as an outsider this profile looks rosy and that’s the exact reason why I took up this job. But I never expected the work quality would be so pathetic. Relevant work ex on papers I can see but substantially I don’t think I am gaining any skills apart from documentation and follow ups internally. Don’t even get to see the strategies and plans vicariously as the food is backed in Japan and I don’t even get to attend external meetings with customer. Anyways I still have 2 months before I go to TCS (if I go). I think after cat results the smoke would settle, and then I could make an informed decision. Once again thanks to you for your insight. My frustration is quite visible in my previous post, sorry for this. J

Who told you your profile is not great or not suitable for IIMs or other top B-schools.
You've probably one of the best profiles which are sought after by the companies recruiting for Operations. Don't just go by the salary. Try giving CAT and score good percentile and target colleges which are known for Operations in India like IIMB, Nitie, SJMSoM and other top IITs B-schools. I'm sure you stand a good change of getting shortlisted and getting a good profile post MBA.
The grass is always greener on the other side. This is general mentality and we humans being always fell in the trap of this :)

I was wondering y in b school forms there is always a column to fill your present package? What do they make of it? My point is m working in a supplier company and I think the quality of work ex is not so good, (isn’t it apparent from the salary package?) so the point is and I don’t think just having sales and marketing profile for the namesake without any worthy and significant work ex matters to them.

My work includes follow ups internally, lot of paper work and documentation, and regular errands based on BPFCs. m not doing any pricing work, negotiations, customer visits, new projects involvement. JTEKT is tier-1 supplier for maruti, Toyota, Honda, Nissan in india.it has just 300 employee and except for Japnese bosses, people here are different. (local people happy to get a job in international company- not even a single person from NIT IIIT IIT no offence to anyone but intellectual and awareness level matching is must to survive.if you know what I mean. I feel more frustrated day by day.. )..

all the work and decision are taken in japan and not in india.( I feel JTEKT india office is just an assembly line factory, just to gain territorial dominance over its competitors, and established just for localization purpose as importing from japan is costlier for automobile OEMs)

Secondly I don’t get enough time to study either. It’s a hectic and low paying job. Without substantial work ex.

In TCS I know there would be no edge, but I would at least get time to study. Anyways I don’t think my profile is good enough for IIMs and for MDI and FMS cat percentile would suffice. Please suggest what should I do? May b I am wrong in judging the potential here but this is it how I feel.

@shubhba Since you do have MBA plans, if not this year maybe next year, I would recommend that you continue in your current job. If you don't make it this year, you can always look for a job switch by around May/June and that too in a similar profile and thus maintain the uniqueness or the edge you are thinking of. No job is great/awesome. Every job has its own difficulties, monotony etc. The grass always looks green on the other side of the river. I wouldn't recommend the switch to IT just based on the package being offered.

Being a B2B supplier company , the departmental work is more of sales and documentation rather than working on strategies or market study. (all strategies building, market study, future plans etc are done in JAPAN headquarter and we get backed food). I must say the work is that much good as I thought it would be in sales and marketing dept.

@freakmba It will not give you any special edge. There will so many people with IT work exp and that too in SAP domain. Your work exp is also not that significant to show an expertise in that. You'll have to consider doing something extra to build your profile. Try doing some certification, internship, certificate programs (3-6 months), take part in some extra curricular activities at office, contribute to society by associating with an NGO etc.

@tuhinrawat Well regarding the experience - you would have got a joining letter for the time you joined the company and then you would get a relieving letter when you are relieved of your duties. This would be enough to show your experience in the company
As for getting a call.. it totally depends on your percentile as well as other factors like your extracurricular record, your work experience and how your academic record compares with other applicants... No one can predict that at this juncture

@ElMatador 1. The career prospects are good... the final placements like the summer placements are very good.
3. Not true... if you have a good reason to tell them why you came into this field, and can show them that you have learned something during your stint... then there is no issue at all. Can vouch for this from my personal experience
4. Again a classic case of "everyone seems to have an opinion about everything these days"... Yes B-schools do go for diversity but that does not mean that they reject IT guys outright. Everyone with ha decent work profile has a chance - yes you might have to try a little harder but that is that... it is not that they would reject you simply for diversity requirements... you are in if you are good..

I have given CAT and other exams this year, and have serious plans of pursuing an MBA degree......

I am targetting the top - 20 B-Schools in the country, .....

Have applied to the respective b-Schools

Would like to know the following :-

1. What are the career prospects after pursuing MBA from the new IIMs (have heard that the summer internships have been good at these places, but am unsure of the final job placements at the end of 2 years) ?

2. Have applied to SIBM, Pune and SCMHRD, Pune , but several people have advised me against it, saying that it is good for freshers only.. Is it wise to pursue these options ?

3. I am aware of the fact that my Work Ex is totally un-related to my Bachelor's Degree, and have heard from various sources that this might prove a deal breaker when applying to a decent B-School . Is it true ?

4. Have heard from several sources that folks from IT firms generally do not stand much chance in some of the top B-Schools, in wake of the new "Diversity Requirements" demanded by various institutes.. Is it true (An Honest opinion please) ?

@dinesh24 I would suggest you should go for a job.... with your question it seems you are not ready for an MBA yet. Here are the reasons:
1. Forget about the XLS - there would not be such consolidated data even for one institute... and even if there is it is closely guarded data that would not be available to a lot of people even inside the institute.
2. MBA/PGDM is an educational qualification being granted by a reputed institute. IIMs are not placement agencies. Please treat them like one (asking about average packages). there is much more to an IIM than just salary packages.
3. The question is futile... the salary, work profile, working hours etc. of a finance industry employee would be very different from a consulting sector employee. Hence the average salary figure would not make any sense at all. Hope you do understand this fact having taken part in a placement process in your college.
sorry for being so blunt... but one should do an MBA when one can handle the additional education as well as the additional responsibilities that one gets in an organization post an MBA.

@amiteswar3 It is a unique and different course. More suited for people with LLB etc. who are into Legal side of business.

@losetowin Any full time work experience after graduation, where you're drawing a salary as a full-time permanent employee, will be given credit and considered as work exp. Its up to you to justify the "Why MBA?" part after a teaching experience, that too in a secondary school!!

Does a teaching experience in a Secondary level school will be given same weightage as a corporate job in the selection process of a bschool and in the placement process?

@eswar452 First thing to understand is personal aims of entrepreneurship or teaching are things you'll need to find/achieve for yourself through hard work and your own efforts. Going to any particular institute for an MBA is not going to help you in that sense. All that the institute is going to offer you will be knowledge and the know-how, and a degree!!

@eswar452 You need not necessarily have an MBA to go into a career track of your choice. Since you're already having a PGDBA degree, the CFA certification and anything else related to equity research, wealth management etc. would suffice. But then it will take time for you to do all that and get into that track. Then again a 2yr MBA program is not going to be a short cut to that.

@dinesh24 I think you shouldn't be concerned about average packages in IIM A, B, C but L maybe yes (but only in comparison to other 3). And then again, I'm not sure how that is going to be decisive for doing an MBA from an IIM and that too the top ones, because MBA is definitely going to add value. Salary/Remuneration is not the only benefit one should be looking for from an MBA. If it is so, I would say rethink about your MBA plans!!

Immediately after B.Tech in 2008 placed in TCS and worked there for 14months. There I worked for NCDEX, a client of TCS. There I liked the finance domain and started pursuing PGDBA finance from SCDL.

In 2010, I got an opportunity to join a PSU and joined it. But very soon , it proved a wrong step because of very routine job profile which a diploma person can do. Very limited career progression. Anyway, I have signed a bond for 5 years and presently working here. Along with this job, I completed PGDBA finance last month. Finally, I decided to make a career in the equity research or wealth management. Long term goal would be to manage my own funds, and starting my own organization in the field of microfinance and financial consultancy services. So, I would like to become a master the field of finance.

Now, I am in dilemma and unable to decide what to do?

Given CAT2012 but this is the first attempt and may get around 90%ile.

I want my desired profile in financial services and work for atleast 4 years and parallelly completing CFA US charter. I think this would strengthen my profile and capabilities for my long term goal.

But, after 4 years of unrelated experience(from 2008 till now), whether I can get my desired job profile.

Whether to pursue MBA in finance in regular mode now?
Otherwise, just using my PGDBA, and by doing some wealth management/ equity reserch certifications from FLIP which would take few months and trying for related jobs. If I get into some company with desired profile even with low salary then whether to join it and parallelly finishing CFA?

Please share your valuable thoughts on my future course of action, like

pursuing MBA? then from which college? how long to wait for admission into desired college?

registering for CFA? then being in the present company or first switching to financial services company and start pursuing CFA?

anyother core finance programs which will provide great knowledge and decent placement for sure?

Hey, you have a very good profile & at this point of time don't think much abt. the admission criteria, it changes every year but with a good %ile of ~99.5+ you can get admission to C,L,FMS. Your approach must be to increase your profile as well as work-ex. along with a good prep. over 2 years time.

You start browsing other threads of PG as well as look into some good private B-Schools like MDI,SP-Jain etc.

i have one query..help me out plzz
I completed my B.Tech in 2012 and i was placed in infosys but due to the recession we people have been given joining date of August 2012 ..:( In the mean time i thought of giving CAT12 and prepared for it well and m expecting a decent 90-95% percentile as dis was my second attempt at it and last year too i managed 90% in it.
During this time i had applied to Axis and ICICI bank PO programme and i got selected in Axis bank and expecting a selection from ICICI too.Now i am totally confused what to do whether to join Axis bank PO programme or to go for an MBA programme.What i am thinking is that even if i will do an MBA from a second tier college than even i will land somehere near this BANK po profile only..So why not grab the opportunity now and get into it.Moreover there is no guarantee that after two years what would be the market like...it may get even worse.
Or after having work-ex in the banking sector than if i will opt for MBA..than it would be a good option nahi...??
