full time vs part time mba which one should i pursue i am B.tech IT 63% marks and 3 years work experience currently working

puys I am planning to sit for cat this yr but am apprehensive as to how many top b-schools I can make it to with my profile:
1.class 10 :88.6%(cbse)
2.class 12:88%(cbse)
3.graduation:cgpa 8.25(76%)btech in civil engg
plz tell me as to which iims or other top b-schools I can hope for

Hey Puys!! I am a B.tech CSE 2011 pass out and still a fresher also i dint applied for any MBA entrance exam this year. So i was planning to do MBA in 2013 batch.
But my concern was will it create a problem for me in getting admission to a nice B-School as well as during the placements???
Also i have very poor academic record (10: 74%, 12: 58%, B.Tech: 73.86%)

Kindly Help! As i am very worried about my future. I just want to get into some college with avg package 6-8 LPA

hello all,
I did my B.tech in electronics engineering(ece students suffer the most) in 2012. Got placement in Infosys, but this time the company has delayed the joining till feb 2013.
I plan to give CAT this year, have a decent acads 90+in both 10 and 12. Last time got 91%ile.
But tending to 0 extra curricular, moreover, this year will be counted as a drop year for me! already dropped one for B.tech.
Should i try to join some other company or prepare for cat as only 4 months are left. What if i loose both???
Another option is some part time job or join some NGO, but just shifted to Delhi so don't have any knowledge about them!!

Yes that is also an alternative, if you can afford to or have no problems in continuing in present job (if you're working that is).

I don't think it makes sense to join a full time classroom program now because almost half the topics will already have been covered. You can probably join the mock tests of T.I.M.E or CL (considered good in many aspects AFAIK) and do detailed analysis of the questions in it to understand some quick concepts/techniques which will be useful. It will also take you through all the topics and some basics in the sections (especially for QA & DI).

Also you can consider some mocks like by TG and others which offer completely online mocks that you can take sitting at home!! And then go through the concepts and techniques detailed for them.

So basically you can look at a strategy centered around mocks to go through many of the concepts/techniques.

Then again, its not too late to start prep. A full fledged preparation can also be done. Attend a coaching institute and learn those concepts they teach from there and do self study for concepts they've already covered! There's still 3 months to go which is enough time to do this, provided one can dedicate the time and effort (a little extra of both). So the choice depends on how well you understand yourself and your strengths and weakness!!

There is nothing wrong with your academics buddy and you can very well target some of the top institutes in the country itself. But for that first you'll need to have a good score in any of the plethora of MBA entrance exams available.

Below are some of the entrance exams in the order of their schedule:

1. CAT: mid-October to mid-November
2. NMAT - October-December
3. IRMA - 2nd Sunday of November
4. IIFT: Last Sunday of November
5. SNAP - 3rd Sunday of December
6. XAT - First Sunday of January
7. MICAT - Last Sunday of February

These are just tentative and based on previous years. For exact dates and any changes keep checking the leading dailies or relevant threads in PG for admissions notifications!

3 months may/may not be enough time to prepare. Depends on an individual's skills and understanding of the basics. So the first thing you need to do is take up a mock test (any previous year paper or current/previous mocks by coaching institutes) and understand where you stand as of now and which section you're lacking in (and need more focus). Then plan your preparation/strategy accordingly. Time is less, so start ASAP!!

As far as loan amount is considered, people are doing MBA with loans of 8lakhs+!! Also AFAIK JAIIB & CAIIB are considered good in banking industry for better profile and packages especially in some of the nationalized and PSU banks. About industry credibility of the course as its online, if you're working in parallel more stress will be on the exp or knowledge you gain there I think.

Bro....loan amt is no problm if u r repaying it to bank... but if u paying back it to org becomes problamatic while switching to new org. and later want to pursue any othr degree, tht time this amount will be a grt liablity....!!!

I am an ICICI PO prog. product and currently wrkng as Credit Manager with some 7 mnth xp only.
Now the online component is abt to start which if I complete will get me MBA (BANKING & FINANCE) full time regular degree from MANIPAL UNIV. which a month ago I decided not to pursue due to diff. future plans.

Now as the last date is approaching for online component registration, I am in grt dillema as to join it or not.

Pro of it:
1. MBA banking & finance full tym degree plus 2.5 yr wrk exp (earnd in total at tym of completion).
2. If got P1/P2 rating while completing thn straight promotion to AM2 and salary boost.

Cons:
1. Increase total loan amount fr 5 yr by 1.25 lakh
2. Compulsory stay to complete degree, not able to take out any better opportunity iff received (which is least bothered abt).


I am doubtful abt credeblity of this ONLINE MBA and value to money & Industry response to it. Also I am in serious doubt as I would not be able to pursue any other certification which I am planning ( FRM most probably or prepare for GMAT for executive MBA).

In my opinion, if you're confident about yourself and believe that you can perform well then you should go ahead with the program. What different future plans do you have? Move out of banking industry?

If that is the case then yes, this program wouldn't make much sense. But otherwise if you want to stick on in the same industry then you can pursue the course and then do CFA, FRM or any other certification that you find suitable to boost your career later on.

T.I.M.E and CL ProcMocks are good AFAIK. There are also lots of other mocks like TG which you can take from home itself.

There is no extra marks for being a girl in any institute!! But then yeah looking at batch diversity institutes do consider having girls in the batch and maybe some leeway is given when they're scored in GD/PI.

Being from a pharma background, again there are no special marks for it, but then you'll be preferred over others with same scores (after GD/PI) say a person with IT work exp (because any institute has a majority of this category). This is again to ensure batch diversity.

Some top institutes which have less weightage on past academics are IIMC, IIFT, MDI, NITIE, FMS etc. Its not that they have zero weightage but less weightage. And regarding IIMs most of them seem to have a different criteria each year. So you'll need to wait and watch what they're looking for this year.

For work-exp, different institutes have different scoring or weightage on work-exp. So depending on you target/aim based on other parameters its better you find out for yourself what they accept at where you want to be. Otherwise making this a sole criteria for applying to B-schools may result in you missing out on some good institutes which are good in other aspects.

All this said, I would recommend one thing. Forget all this and focus on your prep, on basics. Only if you get a good score in CAT/Other exams you'll be faced with this conundrum of choosing your institute. Else institutes will choose not to have you!!!

Adding on to what abhimukh has said, I would recommend that you try 1 year course's like at ISB, GLIM, GMP at XLRI or maybe something through GMAT only. As you said, yes 5 years is a work exp which MAY have a bad impact when you sit for final placements after MBA in some institutes. Not all of them.

I believe Tier-II institutes are strict for you because the profile/packages you get after doing MBA from there may not be as you expect it to be. For preparation, since you have already given CAT you probably already have the materials with you. So do self study using that. And probably just the mocks you can attempt at a nearest city where coaching center is available (if it is not that far that is). Basically where there is a will there is a way! :)

I gave 2011 CAT but just got 78.81 percentile and i already have 4 years of work experience in a Telecom MNC and Also converted SITM and IIFM this year but I didn't joined both so i am very very confused that may i had made a mistake by not joining SITM because so many people are complaining that I have made a big mistake by not joining but i really do not have much interest in Telecom as well as in Forestry.
Some people are saying that next year u will be completing 5 yrs of work experience which will be a negative thing for me and one more thing is CAT is very unpredictable and it can be very Dicey.
One more thing right now i am being posted in a very small city where i cann't find good coaching classes for the preperation of Exams like CAT and GMAT.
So all of you please suggest what should i do because i am finding it very difficult to make up a mind on now what should i do because i didn't like the job which i am doing,may i can quit it and give one more decent shot for cat 2012 and even can you people suggest me what else i can do.

PGP is the normal post-graduate program like your masters degree. FPM is a doctorate programme equivalent to a PhD.

FPM is the course if you wants to have future in Academics and If you wants to persue simple MBA then PGP is the course .FPM will take minimum 3 and half years to complete and in that duration you will get stipend of nearly 20000 to 25000 per month depends on the IIM in which u teke admission and if still wants more knowledge on this then please visit the respective sites of IIM's

This is my 4th attempt at CAT(actually 2nd, didnt study at all for the first 2 attempts). The work i m doin(industrial) is not relevant to the studies which i want to pursue(marketing/finance). Plus its a 6 day 12 hr job which includes 3 hrs travelling(a physically n mentally demanding job).. Also I hate the work m doin. Getting a score between 65-80 percentile in cl mocks n aimcat with an odd 40 percentile in both of them. Wud it b a wise decision to leave the job n go for CAT 2012 considering this is my last attempt? Also WUD IT B DIFFICULT TO JUSTIFY A 5 MONTH IDLE PERIOD JUST TO PREPARE FOR CAT?? SENIOR PUYZ HELP NEEDED...

Buddy, if you really hate your job and want to crack CAT this year no matter what then leave your job and take time off to prepare. You will need to justify in interview why you took a break and you need to prepare a convincing answer for it. You can say about some travelling probs, etc. It will also be good if you can work from some NGO or do some certification to improve your profile in those 5 months; so that you can tell that you were not just sitting idle in those 5 months.

Atleast, you will have a crack at GDPI by taking a break because for you that is the most important thing

I have just completed my btech in civil engg frm a reputed NIT.
My goal is to do MBA the coming year i.e target is CAT 2012 for which i have already started preparation . I had given CAT 2011 but sadly ended up with 91:banghead:

Now that btech is over i will be doing job soon. presently i have got two job choices frm campus.

A private construction company with less salary (< 30k) and posting preferably in mumbai or pune and moderate work pressure.

&

A Psu with thik thak salary (35k to 40k) but placed in some interior place but with very less work burden.

Which job will be better for me keeping in view my future mba aspirations ??

And one more thing Dose the type of work ex matters during MBA ?? means which company ?? reputation of the company ?? job profile ?? Do all this matters or just the duration of wr ex ???

Plzz help me resolve my dilema.

Since you have MBA aspirations, the job you choose must be in line with the specialization you intend to take after MBA. This will make your work-exp relevant and give you an added advantage when you sit for final placements after MBA. Relevant work-exp has its advantages if you know where you want to be after MBA. But say in some cases like IT, any work-exp will count. In other cases it depends on the organization and what their criteria for recruitment is. They may or may not consider your work-exp. If they consider then you will get a better profile/package. That's the advantage you stand to gain.

So if you're unsure about your specialization for MBA, and will decide only towards end of 1st year, then go for the job which you feel comfortable in (Construction since you have a Civil Engg background) OR pays you more (PSU)!! That is an individual choice. I would recommend the former.

PSU in which sector/industry? and what will be your job profile in both PSU and construction company? And are you decided on which specialization for MBA? If you think on these questions then you'll be able to arrive at your answer.

You have a pretty good profile.

And relevant work-ex would not only be a huge plus in GDPI but also make you more aware about your field of interest. Secondly, there are plenty of guys with IT work-ex (esp from TCS, Infy) giving CAT and getting calls. So for IT work-ex guys its pretty difficult to convert calls due to the sheer number of people out there with similar profiles. B-schools get few candidates (compared to IT candidates) who come for MBA in Marketing or Finance or Consulting with relevant work-ex. So you would have a great chance of converting your calls.

Coming to your point of not getting time to study, if I would have been in your place, I would have taken the sales and marketing job. If you can find even some 2-3 hours a day or can slog over the weekends, take up the marketing job as it would be huge plus for you after CAT (during GDPI). You will realise its importance only when you attend GDPIs

CAT 2013 is so far away and you're very early into it. But then its good that you're focused. Forget about your acads as of now, you can't change it now, can you?

Focus on the task at hand i.e. preparations. Which college will accept you is after you get a high CAT score which can make colleges think about even considering you!!

It doesn't create much difference. And IT giants are infact very common and hence no differentiating factor.

If one can learn in a small company and put forth it well in interviews, there is no disadvantage associated with the same. :)

1- Does having a work experience given spl preference in GDPI sessions after crackin CAT.... ?? I mean what if someone goes into directly after graduation?

2- I am targetting for CAT 2014 as I hav completed my first year dis summer. I am enrolled in Int MSc course in BIT Mesra. I've been suggested books on QA DI/LR by Arun Sharma and for english Norman lewis and business magazines newspapers. Tell me if something else is required. I can't join coaching classes as my clg timings won't allow me 2 do so also I can give 3-4 hrs(max) a day, so plz suggest me how 2 proceed as I am a complete newbie in dis field.... Thnx in advance

now itself?? Buddy IMO, you're too early into thinking about prep. CAT 2014 is so FAR away. Btw Integrated MSc course is for 5yrs right? So if you have completed 1st year now, it makes sense for you to appear (if you're not writing for first time to just get the hang of it!!) only by 2015!!

Anyways like I said its too early now. You have your grad scores also to be looked into. Don't spoil that with something which is 3 years away. It will become a problem for you later. As of now, enjoy college, concentrate on getting good scores in the first 8 semesters (Assuming its semester system you have). Makes it easier for you to concentrate on CAT Prep during 9th semester when you'll be writing CAT and makes sense to look for admissions in various institutes.

Then again, if you're very particular that you want to start now itself, QA/DI/LR, coaching classes and any structured approach is out of question now. First build your basics. Reading speed, Math concepts up to 10th (you can try Vedic Math and practicing it if you want), some vocab, put in habit of reading newspaper daily etc. Do that in structured or organized form!!

Finally answering your 1st question. No its not necessary that you have work exp, or institutes "prefer" them or give preferential treatment to them in GDPI. There will be some score associated with years of work exp one has (usually 5-10% of total score which includes X, XII, grad marks, CAT Score and work exp). You'll lose on that small component. But then all institutes look to admit a mix of freshers and work-exp candidates to have a diverse batch profile. So you need not worry.

My predicament is that does it make sense to appear for CAT with 3+ work ex.And will be it be a disadvantage especially considering that my work ex is in IT field,bulk comes from this field. Also, if u know someone who has converted IIMs(older ones)with a similar profile,it would be of great help

Buddy, you have a pretty good profile. And don't worry, the panelists will only know that you work for a certain company. What kind of work you do, they will know only from you. So, you can form your answer in such a way that will look good on you.

Secondly, you can try for all the top colleges but first of all you need to concentrate on getting a good score in CAT. There's no hurdle of having IT work-ex for getting into Marketing. You can go into Marketing and then with your creativity and skills, chart a career in it.

You can work for some NGO or learn a foreign language to improve your profile.

Your's story is nothing new from any other software engineer.Believe me, I'm telling this from my 3 years of experience in the IT industry. It all depends on your luck as how good/bad your PM or TL is.Don't get bogged down by these issues.I know its hard to ignore them but then you'll have to take all these once you get into the corporate life.So, stick to the company you're working for or you may ask for another project if you could get that.
If not, work for the same project until the CAT results.Take this as a motivation factor to come out from the IT industry and channelize this to your CAT preparation.Once you start doing this, things would become more easier.Never do the mistake of leaving the job and preparing for the CAT.That decision might backfire at times.

Dont feel low just because you are having a hard time in your job this happens with everyone and would soon pass.In case of your MBA first decide why you want to do MBA is it because of this job tension but remember a job after MBA would be more stressful. If you really aspire for knowledge then MBA is a good option and remember one thing"YOUR LIFE AFFECTS YOU THE MOST AND NOT ANYONE ELSE."So decide accordingly.ATB

In my opinion, you can take a break and prepare with full focus for both the exams. It doesnt has negative impact as such on your profile. There have been people in past who have done it and have been able to crack PIs of top IIMs as well.

So, no need to worry, take break from job f required, score well, get the calls and then the justification for the same can be given during GDPI time.

My suggestions (Assuming you're doing a 4 year B.Tech at IIT Hyd and you've just entered your 2nd year)
Drop coaching - No point in preparing so early.
Improve your CGPA as much as possible.
Get involved in college fest organising committee, Hostel committee, and
activities that boost your resume.
(Devote all your time to above 2)
Read newspaper daily.
Read Barrons and grammar books.

Don't prepare for CAT at this stage- you'll burn out.

Going to coachings, I finds Maths parts easy, but English is not that great.
I completed Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis,and am now about to complete How To Read Faster and Better,and am sticking to it's reading challenges.So besides coaching I read for most of the time.Is there something else I can do??
I am also writing articles now,so that I can have a better grip at my vocabulary,is that a good idea??

Outside of Job, you can work part-time for some NGOs, you can learn some musical instrument, learn foreign langauges, take part in some sports tournaments for a sport which you are good at, do some relevant certifications for the specialization you wish to do, etc..

But remember, no extra-currics worth mentioning are got without investing some good amount of time.

I really do not understand why the top colleges give considerable weightage to extra-curricular activities. What is the use if a donkey was once a lion.

Despite the company not being very large or highly reputed, i see your profile as the one that has good leaning opportunities stored in it and this will definitely help you.

In my opinion, instead of just joining any MNC where there might/might not be good learning, you should continue with same job and prepare well for CAT and other MBA entrances, score high and convert the calls Do not worry too much about profile as except few colleges, others still give good importance to performance in exams and then GDPI.

However, if you get some interesting profile in MNC, you should join it but do not leave current job in search of the same.

As far as work ex is considered, there is nothing like optimum work ex for doing MBA. It depends on profiles one is targetting. If looking for consulting then 2-3 years workex is required to bag in good offer , however for finance and marketing, anything less than 2 years shall suffice as well.

Well,it is not the first time i am being indecisive,but this time its a continuing turmoil about my carrier and how my future turn up,need your opinion mates.

First here's my profile :
class X - 81.4
class Xll - 73.8
b.tech(cs) - 59.1(till seventh semester and final year result awaited)
and decent extra curriculars in various domains

So, as you can well see my screwed up scores but somehow i managed to get placed from college in a very small startup IT company at the post of assistant marketing manager (&only; after suggestions from pagal guy members i joined it also because i had nothing in hand at that time.)

After joining it i learnt the company started up in march this year with employee strength of 10 people basically it deals with website designing ,seo ,and software reselling (it might expand in future)and it doesn't have decent projects with itself as of now.

All in all, i have a low paying job which actually involves a bit market analysis,collecting prospective client data and doing the job of a marketing executive(irrespective of the post offered)

coming to the most important part , after screwing up my Btech profile i am really serious regading my mba and will do whatever it takes(regarding preparation) to be in a good b-school (a++,a or b++)

Then again your acads are not that bad. I know people with less than 60% also making it to IIMs!! (For e.g. IIM C & L place large focus on CAT scores). So sit tight and focus on getting the said 99.3 or high CAT score.

Actually, looking at the criteria of IIMs, sometime I go under a serious depression phase for a day. Whatever I wud put the efforts, but I won't be getting IIMs.

In other side, I cannot skipthe path of Management education, so decides to stick with what I am and try for rest of the institutes such as NITIE, XL, S P jain, IITs and ha MDI....

But I want to know, if somebody can tell me....is this happens that a person with less marks goes in.....in IIMs

By Oct-Nov this year i.e when CAT/Other MBA entrance exams happen, you'll be in your final year (you're passing grad next year right?). So you are eligible for CAT 2012.

thanx for the reply it indeed was very helpful ,regarding producing pay slip are they necessary will the certificate wont suffice the need ,cause from what i know the payment is done in cash and could you please suggest me a good certification course till then which would do a world of good to my profile ....

Sometimes they do ask for the pay slips. If you are being paid in cash then it may raise some extra questions in some B-school admission processes (because there have been so many cases where people show some certificate (maybe dad's business or some fake one) and tried to show they have work exp. That's why they ask for pay slips also in some places.

Certifications to do, depends on which area you're interested in viz. Marketing, Finance, Ops, HR etc. You may want to read through the thread Certifications for Profile building

My recommendation is do it after first year of MBA only, when you have a better idea about each area and what specialization you want to take.

I have recently graduated in May 2012 from ECE branch and have no job yet. I want to go for mba and want to prepare for it. So doing this will create a Gap of one year for me. Is this gap prove to be harmful for me in later stages ?
Or should I be more focussed in searching the job. Please advice me.:|

10th : 90.8 (ICSE)
12th : 81.8 (CBSE)
B.Tech : 8.5/10 cgpa

Not necessarily for b-school admission , but if you dont convert the b-schools you want , then you wont have a back up , in that perspective you should try find a job :)

But 1 year gap is not difficult to justify
