I am in final year of production engineering. As a part of syllabus we have to undergo industrial in-plant training for a year. After the training i am not really willing to work in automobile industry and want to switch over IT/Systems which has always been my basic interest. I am looking forward to do MBA. Probably in IT.Is it advisable ? will i get a good/better package than i am supposed to get as a production engineer after doing MBA in IT as i am not from IT field ?

IT is all about skills and your analytical ability. The more you have the better you are and the better are your chances of success. Based on the profiles that we see, you might need to do some training to get urself apt for the IT field. And a package after MBA has lot to do with your prior job experience. If you have good prior work ex, and are looking to continue in the same field, you kinda become a prized catch. Remember always love what you do and do what you love. Hope this helps

SEO/ Online marketing is huge and is growing by the day. We call it Internet Marketing and teach courses in that. And we have had students who have opened their own Internet Marketing firms. You could also go the same way in a couple of years. Your job could range from developing innovative marketing strategies to optimizing the content on the website, to ensure top results using organic search. But at the end of the day, it all depends on whether it interests you. @kulksnikhil A right MBA (Look for the school that fits you,every MBA has a particular directions, don't go only by the name) would open doors to a number of different careers for you. Since you are looking at future career in IT, you could look at roles such as Business Analyst, Consultant (have a number of paths to follow, such as ERP etc), Analyst (analyse the firms current operations and suggest appropriate technical solutions), Assistant Product Manager, technology strategy consulting or roles in business development. Going down the road you would keep on magnifying your impact and roles and could end up say being a Product Manager, which is the baby step towards the corporate decision making hierarchy. Guys I have 2.5 years of IT experience.I am interested in marketing and probably going to join NMIMS.After interaction with seniors they said FMCG and Telecom majors do not offer jobs to ppl with IT work-exp easily who have marketing specialization.My interest areas were these sectors only but seniors told i will be preferred by IT cos and BFSI sector now what shud i do shud i stop thinking abt marketing or shud i pursue General Management which may help me to get opportunities in variety of sectors so please advice

While alum responses may be realistic/exaggerated do take them with a pinch of salt. In Indian B-Schools, the placements are slowly trending towards networking, proving your relevance and being on continuous look out for opportunity which does justice to your skill set, something which was considered true only for US/Europe.

When you get into B-school you will study different courses, interact with people from different walks of life and I am sure you would do fair bit of networking. As a focused and mature individual you will then have to understand what roles you fit in, what roles you like to work in. You will have all the time in the world to prove your merit and find the right job for yourself. Don’t think much into what companies prefer and what they don’t; companies care about only one thing, are you interested and capable enough to get the work done? If you can indicate and prove that, you can get into almost any industry you want to get into. MBA journey is not an easy one, but be sure that in long term it will bear fruits

This field is something which is cumulatively called Digital marketing. Ecommerce companies such as Flipkart, Jabong and Myntra have Digital Marketing positions. Companies such as Directi also hire for such roles and are vendors to ecomm and many other companies. SO opportunities are there but it all boils down to what interests you as a person?

On-ground actual work done as a business analyst will always look better on your CV than a certification. Some certifications are however considered very good to have, but I am not the best person for this factual information. I do find some of these certifications self-defeating as they are only bestowed upon people when they have achieved a very good level of experience, for e.g. BABOK. Now if you have a lot of experience already as a sharp business analyst, why would you even need a certification. What jack would a certification give you then? It would just be a badge on the resume.

I have been recently asked to go through Service Oriented architecture, Web Services etc for my job hiring. I have been recuited as a BA post my MBA in a top IT firm. It would be helpful if nayone with exposure to SOA, web services kindly explain the role an MBA might have in dealing with such technologies.

As a Business Analyst in an IT company you will have to liaise with a few departments and do a lot of cross-functional work. For example you may have to work on a project wherein you would talk to a client or a client services team and gather their requirements say for a software module. You will create a requirement specification document or a use-case document on the basis of that. Further you will work with the technology team on the technical feasibility of those requirements and iterate upon to arrive at a final requirement specification with timelines from technology team. You will then followup with technology team for development and testing. In your case the module may have a lot of web services requirements owing to which you have been asked to go through the technical terminology. Your final deliverable will be to keep process and requirements level check on what is being developed. You may also be required to do some use-case testing of business cases on the finally developed module and give your feedback for further improvement.

Regarding it's scope I do not have with me any industry based research which shows trends of if it growing or not.

@rnprakash88 Post MBA profiles in IT are generally that of Delivery/Program/Product manager. As a delivery manager you may be responsible for delivering the tested security modules or whole software to clients. This is more of a technical + people kind of role.

A program manager role is more of a project handler. A person responsible for timely completion of project, status check, progress monitoring, estimations and managing deadlines.

A product manager is like a high lever business analyst working with multiple teams on understanding business and guiding the tech team on development. He may manage deadlines, do requirements gathering, but keeping product sanity in check is his primary KRA.

@kmalhotra You are on the right track ! Go for it ! You can very much remain in the same field. you experience of two year would be very useful and MBA degree will add on to it. You can work as an assistant project manager as well as an IT consultant where you have to interact with client alot.

Hello Puys,I feel immense grief to share this with you guys that I did my MBA-fulltime from IISWBM in 2012 and I am also a B.E computer Science by graduation but for some reason I am still jobless.Think many times before you decide to invest such a lump sum of money in B-Schools coz the job scenario in India specially in Kolkata is grave.I blame my college placements and probably blame myself to some extent but eventually i am d loser.Go for MBA but only from TOP INSTITUTES AND THAT TOO WITH EXPERIENCE.
