The PR scoring algo is a little off. Plus its very difficult to say whether the bottom 10 are less important than the top10. You've got a bunch of Qs wrong towards the end and it has been observed that getting a string of Qs wrong in a row tends to create a larger drop than more spaced out wrongs.

As always,focus on getting Qs right rather than trying to game the system. That's a lot easier

Hi All.. I have a query related to the pattern in which marking is done in GMAT.. could someone tell me from his/her experience regarding the weightage of last 7-10 questions in both the sections..??.. how important is it as compared to first 7-10 questions..??..

The reason why I ask is.. I carry a hit rate of average 29-31 questions of 37 in quant.. and most of the times score between 46-49.. today I gave my first princeton, and got 32 of 37 correct in quant. (12 of 14 in DS and 20 of 23).. but my score was 43.. when I checked I found that I marked wrong/incorrect options for 10, 30, 32, 35 and 37. I relaised that 4 of my last 10 question were wrong... so did this really screw me up so bad..??.. will that have such a big impact..??.. please share your thoughts..

I already mentioned this earlier, shruti. You cannot have your essays re-graded. Your score is final. More importantly, the 4.0 is perfectly fine. Let it go. Move on to the other important parts of your app.

Lemme put it bluntly-- Re-taking the GMAT just to show better "communication skills" is a crazy idea. You are just as likely to get below 720 as you are to get above 720. In either case, its going to raise some serious Qs as to why someone with a 720 would want to re-take. Your answer -- " To improve my 4.0 in the AWA" is again, Crazy.

Can you do this another way??

Take the TOEFL!!
Get your essays to reflect strong communications skills, your recommenders to emphasize your strongcommunication skills, and your activities to show communication skills!!

Yet another way?? Mail the adcoms, tell them your score and ask if you really need to re-take the GMAT to be competitive. As a girl ( i assume you are one based on your ID) you are in a separate category than the IIM. Consider an old PG-ite girl-- inblue, 690, 3yrs work-ex--> Chicago-Booth

You cannot re-grade your essays. If you do the re-take, the college will consider the score you submit, BUT will be able to see your other score as well.

You are slightly(or perhaps extremely?) paranoid about the adcoms getting suspicious-- that's applicable when you have a 2.5 or lower on the AWA. If you spend 2.5months writing the same essay, even Shakespeare would have something nice to say about it.

Lets' understand the basic difference between MBA in the US and MBA in India... but before that I believe we all know that Indians are gr8 @ GMAT.. they have raised the bar.. ;)

considering the Indian MBA schools..like it has been for decades, Indian school still stick to profiles with higher scores.. and better score you get the better chances you have to get through.. not that I have any issue with that :

as far as I know, the US college AdComs look for BALANCED profiles.. profiles which show diversity and level, profiles which display challenges faced and multiple dimensions in it.. u need not be a CEO, or a person who gets promoted every year, but you should have progressed from point A to point B.. progression is important..

well.. US MBA schools dont just need people who are just fluent @ English (otherwise they would have mandated TOEFL).. they dont just seek candidates who score 750+ (otherwise all Indians would be doing MBA in the USA.. and would we all have loved it or wat )..they dont seek applicants coming from fortune 500 companies alone.. they dont expect us to be baba Amte or mother Teresa either..

try and concentrate on each step in the application process.. GMAT, research for shortlisting the best colleges + application (Essays + Extra Curr + reasoning behind MBA) + Interview.. and going by your words, "I've pretty good work ex, acads and extra curricular", I believe you did pretty well on the first step.. now just concentrate on subsequent steps in the process and sell your profile as if you were best advertiser of all time.. ;)

to answer you question, if I were you I would not give the care for low AWA score.. but since I am not you, you are the one who would have to make the choice

Your AWA score is rarely looked at by b-schools and is largely irrelevant unless you got a 3 or lower. You should have been concerned that the score is skewed in favour of Q and agonised over whether re-taking to improve the V part would have been beneficial. You are focussing on the wrong thing to re-take for.

Either way, i wouldn't suggest a re-take. Your score is great as-is.

Its hard to be so granular when you are taking the test. So don't worry if you are a few seconds off track. Difficulty level, personal comfort with subject etc are factors that need to be taken into consideration.

A general thumb-rule is 25minutes for first 10 questions, 25 minutes for the next 12-15 questions, and 25 minutes for the remaining questions.

For each question don't spend more than 4minutes solving - its not worth it. However you are the best judge when to stick to it and when to let it go.

I have a peculiar problem....Last week I attempted the GMAT Prep test ...and i was fu$%^ up ... of the initial 10 verbal question i got just 3 correct (30 percent accuracy)...however,in the next 25 questions,I made another 6 mistakes(76 Percent accuracy)...

My quant is okay... 48-49 ...but my verbal ...u now know ( overall score 600 )

then,i went ahead with one of the sentence correction test's ( Kaplan)....n I fared no better..of the 22 questions ...only 14 correct ( again initial 5 were wrong that too after narrowing down to 2 options )


I don't know why I make so many mistakes initially ...

They are experiments that the test makers are evaluating to see whether they will be good questions to use in the future. GMATScore gives u the real feel of the GMAT... where only a selected few are considered for scoring and few dummy questions are inserted as a cushion.. which would be disguised very smartly for anyone to make out..

so I believe you must not worry about most of the things right now apart from just improving ur hit rate ;)

One more thing.. GMATPrep does NEVER tell u the hit rate in 37 in quaNT or 41 IN VERBAL.. it takes a few questions OFF the scoring (like real GMAT)... that means ur score by GMATPrep must be calculated on the basis of around 28-30 questions in Quant and 30-34 questions in verbal.. I dunno how u figured out the raw score u mentioned above..

one last thing.. I believe that with this hit rate in both the sections u must be surely around 700 mark.. good going!!

I beg to disagree.. Rajeev has mentioned his raw score, and NOT sectional score equivalent.. this means he got 30 of 37 correct answers... so I believe his doubt/question is very genuine and still open to be addressed..

Your Quant score is good.. even if you get the same in the real test you must be happy..To me what troubles the most is that you have a very low Verbal score.. only direction it must go from here..or rather it CAN go from here is UP.. you know what I mean..

Try and concentrate on the weak areas, while revisiting your strong areas.. keep finding out the mistakes that you commit and formulate means to fix the same.. For ex; I remember my RC was/is really really bad.. even without a mock I used to get a hit rate of just about 50%.. then I realized/noticed that I used to rush up through the answer options, which used to coz maximum damage.. later on I started reading the answer options attentively and patiently.. my hit rate improved..not to a level that I wanted it to be, but still better than what it was.. now I hit around 70%-75% answers.. The point I am trying to make is, that one simple observation helped me improve my hit rate by almost 20points.. so u can imagine how much scope of improvement we all have..

Figure out the issue that you have with RC and DS.. find out the real culprit..is it miscomprehension.. or lack of knowledge..or just that u are tense or something.. dont read too many books/material, plz stick to basics.. read OG OG and more OG.. once u build some confidence, jump to other material.. hope that helps!!

Guys i have my gmat on July 1. Gave only 1 GMAT prep test till now (approx 1 month back and scored 700) Have just started with Kaplan. All OGs are remaining.... :-(

I do not intend to do the Kaplan tests. Can anyone tell me which practice tests I should finish. I have 1 GMAT prep test remaining in the CD. I will also reinstall the GMAT prep test software and give the tests again.

Any other software I can practice with. I have very little time.... plz help. :-(

I found my verbal to be weak. In an attempt to work through it, maths got neglected which can be seen from the quant score dropping from 51 to 49.
Time - My reading speed is less and so I'm not able to complete the section. Everyone suggests to save time in SC and then CR to store for RCs. But I'm taking full 2 mins for SC and more for CR itself and 7-8 mins for RCs that there's no time left towards the end.
Besides improving speed any suggestions or tips to save time on SC and CR?
Any tips, material, etc for DS? Need more practice on DS to improve my Quant score.

There are essentially 4 areas in which you can focus (or be aware of) in order to have a higher GMAT score:

1. Basic Knowledge - you need to know formulae in quant, know rules of grammar in SC etc. This is the absolute basic and there is no escaping. No shortcuts, no "tips and tricks".

2. Approach - this is where you need to internalize a particular method, apply a specific method and know the "tips and tricks" to approach various question types (POE is a classic example that falls in this category).

3. Mental makeup - this consists of a lot of things including your mental stamina (ability to endure the 4hour test with unwavering concentration), your ability to remain cool, ability to think on your feet etc. If you have taken CAT then you will understand what I am talking.

4. Overall strategy - this is where you know how to pace your test, know which questions to solve and which to let go, have a general feel of the difficulty level of the questions, knowing how to use the breaks etc. This is an important facet as you might have realized (esp after having being heavily penalized for leaving out the questions towards the end in Quant).

In all the 4 of them are inter-related, inter-twined and you need to have a clear approach towards how your prep is honing your skills in each of the areas.

Have heard 2 differing views (a) MGMAT is equivalent to actual GMAT these days (from someone from MGMAT) (b) MGMAT is tougher by atleast 30-40 points than the actual GMAT (from a student).

So it is definitely not easier - but depends on which view point you choose.

What is important is that you are analyzing your mistakes and ensuring you dont' make them again - rather than worrying just about the final scores.

Also, u can keep OG12 as the last resource for final practice considering its just 30% different from OG11.

I am planning to give the GMAT in june. (June 30th) I gave the GMAT prep test 1 after downloading from www.mba.com and scored 700 (q49, v 37 ).

Should i do OG10/11/12. and give the GMAT prep again? or shud i do kaplan. since i believe by doing OG 10/11/12 i might come across the same questions in the GMAT prep test and thus my scores will not be representative.

There is a lot of overlap between 11OG and 12OG. I would go with 11OG to save some money. I don't think there is much overlap between 11OG and Official GMAT Prep tests.

This this has been worrying me for some time and I would like to caution all the GMAT aspirants when they are going for any kind of coaching, at least in India. I will not take any names, but I have seen consistently, complete lack of ethics and professionalism when it comes to GMAT coaching in India. I have seen horror stories on the forum, where people have stooped abysmally low in trying to advertise themselves or their coaching institutes by unethical means and in suspicious ways. I have seen multiple personality orders, straight lies, hideous intentions, which I would never associate with teaching at this level.

I will request everyone on the forums to be cautious of these kind of people, esp. "new users" who claim to be the experts without any publicly available credentials. There are lot of other users who have been on forums for a long time and can be trusted. And when in doubt, ask around :)

As a matter of fact, i did ask GMATBOSS for his fone no and spoke to him.

he claimed to have scored 740 and gave me contact no of one of his student but i was not convinced.:nono:

I am an Engineer from BITS. Did computer science and engineering. :D

Wanted to do something different (other than IT and computers) before applying to B-school. Thats why i applied for LSE Economics program.

Though I also have MS/PhD admits for Electrical engg (control systems) from Cornell, Columbia, Dartmouth and Penn State, I will most probably join LSE.

Am thinking of giving the GMAT in June before my studies commence at LSE.

gmatboss banned for advertising and being a clone of another id which was banned for advertising and spamming earlier.

This this has been worrying me for some time and I would like to caution all the GMAT aspirants when they are going for any kind of coaching, at least in India. I will not take any names, but I have seen consistently, complete lack of ethics and professionalism when it comes to GMAT coaching in India. I have seen horror stories on the forum, where people have stooped abysmally low in trying to advertise themselves or their coaching institutes by unethical means and in suspicious ways. I have seen multiple personality orders, straight lies, hideous intentions, which I would never associate with teaching at this level.

I will request everyone on the forums to be cautious of these kind of people, esp. "new users" who claim to be the experts without any publicly available credentials. There are lot of other users who have been on forums for a long time and can be trusted. And when in doubt, ask around :)

I also noticed he always was found on the threads concerning issues related to score etc.. he was never found on the subject specific threads to help out PUYs..

Yes I was thinking to do so.But than listed all the chapters.

But then there are no short cuts to success.
This list is for those who are really weak in maths.

Regarding 3months of study @ 4 hours a day - what according to you is a minimum expectation from a student?

It all depends on your initial knowledge.
As u r an IT guy I suppose you are good in maths.

If not than start with R S Aggarwal-quantitative aptitude (for competitive examinations).The blue and yellow cover book having 726 pages.

Do chapters 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,3,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,24,25.
Leave all other chapters. This will take u 4/5 weeks @ 4 hours/day. Please do not do all the questions from the exercises.

For geometry you can refer chapter 12 of quantum cat (book by sarvesh kumar verma published by arihant).Do portions selectively.

For permutation and combination u can refer R D Sharma for 11th class, volume 2 , chapters 34,35. Do portions selectively.

For probability u can refer R D Sharma for 12th class,part A , chapter 23. Do portions selectively.

For coordinate geometry refer R D Sharma 11th class (chapters 22,23 from volume 1 and chapter 24 from volume 2). Do till circles-conics is beyond GMAT.

For statistics do chapter 24 from R D Sharma,class 9. Also learn standard deviation and variance (you can also google and come to know about these concepts).

The whole of GMAT Quant is based on understanding basics-questions will repeatedly test your basics.
There is no short cut to success. If a person claims that he scored 740/750/760 with 3 months of study @ 4 hours a day than either he is a genius or he is making you a fool.
For verbal strategy/books I will reply in a separarte post.

I agree with you varun. i am not on cloud 9 after the test score. I guess it was a lucky day for me or something hehehe.....

but yes i want to improve on this ... and know that my scores will fluctuate. best part is that I am relaxed these days... got my admission confirmed in LSE Economics masters program. I have given a computer based test before and done well (GRE 1550 ).... so will approach GMAT with a cool and open mind.
Lets see how much the scores fluctuate... hehe... still have to start my formal preparation.

You did fairly well for your first attempt.. congrats!!

but lemme warn you "Over-confidence is mother of all screw-ups".. my advice to you, please stick to basics, do solve as many questions as possible.. go through OG for sure.. and if time permits then also glance through Kaplan books.. also keep giving more and more mock CATs.. it would be needed..

well.. I scored 690 a month and half back in my zero-prep GMAT mock CAT.. and this weekend when I tried another one after spending 40 odd days preparing for the GMAT I got a dismal 660.. so scores do fluctuate and so what matters is more and more practice..;)
