(B) & (C) Use of "because" in this context seems incorrect. Also, "the maestro had finished the concert..." seems incorrect.
(D) doesnt sound correct to me. There seems to be no adequate link between the two events in the sentence.

The answer is one of (A) and (E). We need "having been finished" along with "concert" since "the maestro played a role in finishing the concert.

The only dispute is now between "the maestro relaxed" and "the maestro had relaxed". "having been finished" indicates that the entire sentence is being spoken of as in the past. Hence the answer is (E).

Just wanted 2 request all those ppl who post the ans along with the ques in the same thread, to refrain from doin so.
Following this practice doesnt give everybody a fair chance to try ther hand at the ques as they can already c the ans. This limits our thinking to one option and not the question as a whole.

Here we can ask "...generate the most profit was to.... rather than...".

2) I believe the answer is again (B). Sorry but I am not able to provide any explanation. Only can say that it sounds right.

3) I think the answer is (D). For parallelism, the answer is one of (C), (D) or (E). When we say literature, author is implied. So (D).

Firstly I repeat... Do not give answers along with the questions. Normally people give the reasons for rejecting the options along with their answers.

The answer is (C).

(A) "one microcomputer" is singular hence we should not use "there are now..."
(B) The correct phrase is "as many as" and not "as many than"
(D) "every" should not be followed by "have"
(E) "four times.." is supposed to modify "microsomputers" and not "pupils". Hence we reject this option.

You are right, but "as" is also used to compare two cluases.

Example : Just AS swimming is good exercise, skiing is a great way to burn calories.

Here use of LIKE instead of AS would be wrong.

Simple rule .... i will xplain in a very crude way ....

whenever a comma comes in the sentence , the immediate word/phrase before the comma and immediate word/phrase after the comma shud b complementing each other i.e related ......


Now what happens in E is that the meaning is getting distorted as "every thirty-two pupils now has one microcomputer, four times as many as" means that the microcomputers were 4 times than wat was 4 yrs ago BUT the idea is the pupils were 4 times .... Hence C

In the Option E ,

Read the complete sentence including the part after the underscored part.
"as many as four years ago" is not meaningful.
It should define "as many as" of what ???

As far as I remember, I read somewhere that "as" is used only with the meaning "in capacity of" and never for comparison.

People... Please do correct me if I am wrong.

You are right, but "as" is also used to compare two cluases.

Example : Just AS swimming is good exercise, skiing is a great way to burn calories.

Here use of LIKE instead of AS would be wrong.

My take are
1) B- reason being that to carry is parallel with to move. and since is past tense hence cannot be a.
2) B - am kinda confused b/w B and E, but chose B over E cause as far as rem it is usually used for a specific noun say a thing.
3) Im cofused b/w D and E and wud choose D cuase E sounds a little awkward with the author thing in the end.A,B,C are out as it wrongly compares the Pulitzer awards with the author and not the noble prize.

14) Since 'crop yields' is plural ... 'surpasses' is ruled out ... so B, C eliminated right away.
The ans can't be A coz 'last yr' can not 'surpass crop yields'. The two sides of verp surpass have to be parallel. So we are left with D, E... It can't be E coz first crop yield is not an occurence, secong the sentence is too wordy and awkward especially if compared to D which fits best.

10) First, since we are talking ' one or other ' it will be a singular pronoun. Indefinite pronouns in any case are singular. So, A,D 'states' ruled out.
E has logical contradiction. its changing the meaning altogether.
So between B and C... ' one or the other ' is a better fit pronoun vis-a-vis 'one or another'

Well ChivaS, I think the use of "in" two times removes the redundancy. The first "in" clearly modifies "tissues" while the second "in" modifies "animal species".

(C) is out as "its merits as a proposal" does nto sound correct to me.
(E) is clearly wrong.
Consider (D) - The sentence will be "According to some analysts, whatever the proposal's merits, to tax away all capital gains on short-term investments would, if enacted, have a disastrous effect on Wall Street trading and employment." - We need the words "proposal" since the words "if enacted" modify "proposal". If "proposal" is not there, the modifying words "if enacted" are left dangling.

My 2c,
You can say, X is similar to Y.. which means some attribute of X is same as that of Y, which makes X similar to Y. In this case, something must be similar to polio vaccine, which apparently is not.

Just as X does something, Y also does. Well, this is a more granular level than similar, where we dont think about polio vaccine, but focus on what does polio vaccine do.

As a matter of fact, ignoring the grammar etc, this might be similar to the comparison between 'As' and 'Like'.

I believe the answer for this one is (D).
The reason lies in the answer to your question "Is "the pattern of changes" plural or singular ?"... Read the sentence carefully. "that have occured in human DNA..." modifies "changes" and hence "have" has been used. The underlined part is used to modify "pattern", hence we need to use "indicates". Also "decendant of" is the correct phrase.

The reason for rejecting (C) is that it is passive and wordy. Hope that helps.

Hey GD, I also am not sure about the general usage but in this case I believe the answer will be (A) and not (B) becoz of the following reason:

The word "similar" sounds more appropriate in case of objects with identical features. Eg. similar faces, similar cars etc.

"Just As" would sound more appropriate when we are comparing actions and situations. In this case, the action of "giving polio vaccine" is compared to "mass dietary change".

Please correct me if I am wrong. This is my interpretation.
