Many congratulations to you for craking GMAT !!
I am also a GMAT aspirant and was quite impressed by the volume of the material u referred to. I am particularly lacking in VA, would be great if you could provide some tips+gud reference material to tackle it. Also, could you share your strategy for tackling each of AWA, Quants and VA sections in detail? or else if you have already included it in your detailed post could you provide its link? I have solved many questions in VA but nothing seems to be working for me and this has become a major concern for me now. Please guide...!

It is great that you have scored a high score in GMAT in spite of not getting a call from IIMs. Here I find GMAT to be a better option as compared to CAT particularly for guy like us who have left serious studies about 10 yrs. back.

This is iday here. I've been a member of the forum for more than 6 months now. I gave CAT 2005 (scored 94) and XAT 2006 (scored 95). No calls, obviously, from any school. I decided to aim higher and booked my GMAT.

Started preps in Late March. Will do some 2 or 3 hrs of prep everyday. Used the weekends to maximum possible limit - would work for 8 or 10 hrs definitely.

The materials i used were the following:

1. Kaplan Premier edition
   
2. Kaplan 800
   
3. Princeton
   
4. OG 11th edition
   
5. OG verbal review
   
6. OG Math review

After more than 2 months of sincere preps, gave my GMAT today and scored a 750. I have made a detailed post abt the experience today in my blog - for those curious people who might be interested.

I did not follow any of the To-Dos mentioned in any of the books i have mentioned above, but made my own plans on attacking various question types. I would only say that we should settle with whatever we are comfortable with.

I am no big expert in GMAT preps, there are ppl who score better with lesser preps. But i'd be glad to help any of the souls out there, who are facing difficulty in GMAT preps, or have doubts. I know how difficult these times are and what difference a few good words can do :)

Planning to apply for Fall 2007 with some big names under consideration. Will keep the forum posted about my progress for sure.

I am new to this Forum, i am glad to be part of this forum. There are some very good info here.

I am starting my GMAT Preparation, it's long time since i am out of college and reading books, i have around 10 yrs experience in IT of which around 7 yrs in US, is there any one preparing for GMAT after this gap ? I am aiming for 700+ score.

I think i need to start from basics due to this long gap, what do you guys say ? Can i still start with Kaplan and OG ? I have IMS Material that i bought in India when i was there in 2004, is it good to start with basics ?

I need help on buying the right study material. I have gone through your posts and threads and I am listing down the resources and my questions .

Study Material

1. Kaplan Premier edition (are there also seperate books for Kaplan quant and Kaplan verbal ? Are they good?)
2. Kaplan 800 (does this book have only tests?)
3. Princeton (how many books are there ? seperate for quant and verbal?)
4. OG 11th edition
5. OG verbal review
6. OG Math review

1. MATprep tests - available on MBA.com (free)
Powerprep tests - available on GMAC.com (free )
Princeton tests - available with which princeton book (verbal or quant ?)
Kaplan CD tests -- available with Kaplan 800 book?


I assume you didn't incur any extra expenditure on the tests.
Can you give me a rough estimate of how much these books will cost?
I assume buying the 6 books would suffice for GMAT preparation.

As i always keep saying, there is no one size fits all strategy when it comes to gmat preps. So do what u think is best for u. I followed this strategy and did well. There are many ppl (including kunal) who followed a diff strategy and did better

anyway - i kind of agree with Kunal this time. but not completely. And thanks to kunal for reminding me that i forgot something

in my original strategy - i started with all kaplan and princeton books and took OGs towards the end. I was confident and all but by the last week before the test, i got this feeling of "had OGs been too easy". I redid kaplan 800 again in the week before the test.

now that i've confused samir to the core - lets get back to him.

Samir - are u familiar with all the concepts in math and grammar. do u specifically want to know the various types of Qs that appear in GMAT and the strategies to attack these Qs. then u shud start with Kaplan. I'd advice that to anyone - coz this is what u derice from this book. Same goes to princeton. once u've built ur knowledge base and all that, try OGs. Kaplan 800 - totally diff story. It is completely debatable as to when one shud take this book. I cannot be of help here coz i took the book twice - once before OG and once after :wow:

my advice. OG should not be done at the last. it is the best judge of the GMAT. start with that and then you know whether to scale up, down or stay flat.

besides i would want to scale up in difficulty (Kaplan 800 etc.) not lull into easier questions at the end (OG)

Hello! I am samir from Mumbai, india. Currently working at Malaysia.
I have seen all the discussion you guys had posted. Congrates to all who has scored
more than 700. I am having more than 10 yr experience. I am preparing for getting
admission for Post Graduate Program for Executives (PGPX) of IIM. Want to score more than 700. I am having OG 10 as of now? Is there any difference between OG10 and OG11 or I can go through OG10 alone. Also, I am planning to buy Kaplan books as recommended by some of you guy in the post. Can u please let me know so that I can plan my study.

OG and Kaplan are completely diff kind of books. One should use them fro diff purposes. As amit said, Kaplan is a fundu book. You get concepts, classifications of Q types, ways to attack particular Q types and all that. I built my base using books like Kaplan Premier, Kaplan 800 and Princeton. OG on the other hand is a collection of Qs with answers. You will get explanations, but OG is a kind of book where you should derive more out of the book thru careful analysis and disciplined progress. In my plans, i used the OG to test and fool proof all the strategies i built thru my earlier books.
