Hi guys,

This is shreenath .I am new to GMAT prep. I took the decision of writing GMAT only yesterday.I took the diagnostic test and got the scores like this:
V 26 Q36 Overall 530.

I am planning to take the test in november since i am too rusty right now since i am working for past 3.8 yrs.

Have some queries relating to material for GMAT prep?

Books needed:

SC : MGMAT SC and Aristotle SC Grail
CR : Powerscore CR Bible
RC : RC99
Quant : MGMAT Books

1)Is old material sufficient for all thee books mentioned above?
2)If so from which shop in chennai can v get these books?
is it Available in moore market?any idea anyone?

I am planning to buy OG 13 anyway.

My personal opinoin, do not take any decision quickly. As you have mentioned earlier "newbie", get the books first and go through it. First check if you have the potential to understand them. If it bounces then join classes. Else not required. Initially GMAT was something alien for me as well. Get OG13, read each and every single line from Page1. You will know what is GMAT all about. It helped me big time to understand GMAT. If you understand something on your own it boosts your confidence.

It totally depends on you if you are weak in particular subject you need assistance so it will be good if you join..Ask yourself wether can you handle maths section alone or not..:biggrin:

yes that would do. I am also in the same boat. This has helped me to score on math. I started with a score of 38 and now I am getting a constant score of 46 to 48 in princeton's mock tests. The main reason behind using Arun Sharma is my long term cat preparation. In your case I would strongly recommend it. I have seen my scores improving. To top it my roomie followed Arun Sharma and is is joining IIM A on 18th july Its high time you get this book now. In my opinion, Classes wont lead you anywhere but they wil make you dependent on them. If you stay calm and focus.. they are not required.

I did my GMAT coaching from there only its good coaching..before you attend any classes they expect you to study the topic and come to the class so, i would suggest start your prep now if any doubts to the prof they will clarify

if it is all about math which you are worried about then I dont think any classes are required. The math which we do is simple and basic. Cosider the amount of time you will spend travelling. You can rest assure that you would do great in Math. Follow Arun Sharma (though it is for cat but the tricks and basics are amazing). You will do great in math on your own efforts. LOD1 of Arun sharma is more than enough for maths. If at all required then follow Manhattan's Number properties. they explain from scratch.

rahul.. totally agree.. if u are the kind who learns by listening then classes will help else self study.. at the end of the day quants and all that is basic 10th math..

According to me self study is the best method ( Serious studies ) . First we will not understand the topic or sum but slowly by doing mistakes and re-doing the sums again and again we will understand better.

You must be knowing the saying "practices makes a man perfect" and Practice is the best of all instructors" :biggrin:

And by any chance if you all feel alone you can form an offline or online study group i am sure it will help a lot..

There is generally about a 20-25% difference in the questions of 12 over 11 over 10.

If you google, you should find the many places where each book has been broken down by Question type as well as newer questions over the previous version.

Usually, people pick the latest version and stick to that. You can use the older version for more practice if you prefer.

And in OG 13th edition you have new section which is not there in 12th edition.

I've taken GMAT once and from my experience, I'd say one can manage quite comfortably without joining coaching classes. All it requires is diligent effort and about a couple of months of prep. Be choosy about your study materials and that's more than half the job done. As there's no dearth for online resources, one has to be careful in choosing the materials.
Below are the books recommended in most forums.

SC : MGMAT SC and Aristotle SC Grail
CR : Powerscore CR Bible
RC : RC99
Quant : MGMAT Books would do.

Once done with these, go ahead with MGMAT and other online CATs.
This should be more than enough. For more, PM me.

Also, I'd be taking GMAT again this year around Aug. So, count me in for the study group .

i was going through the material.. i dont think u require any coaching.,. best way forward would be have a study circle and study together on weekends..

Actually need a partner to start with.. like going classes etc. I have been hitting 650+ always and wanted to improve on the Verbal part. Need some1 like me to discuss the strategies and to track each other's status .
