Hi Prudviraj,

You may think of yourself to be weak in some area but you may realize later that it might not be so. So, having a rigid viewpoint about being weak in verbal without getting a hands-on 'feel' of the verbal section is not the smartest thing to do. Likewise for the quantitative section.

Please take the first test on GMAT prep. Take it in one sitting and adhere to the test conditions. After this, evaluate thyself....Base your performance on this test as the starting point for your prep!

The Official Guide-10 and OG-11 have a mix of questions and I get really stuck in many questions(could not figure out how to do solve the question). So I feel that I have to improve my fundamentals a lot in SC area.
Can somebody please help me in finding the questions of sentence correction that are categorised as per various difficulty level. It will be really very helpful if any of the fellow members please point me to a question bank which divides the questions of SC by difficulty level.

AFAIK, no resource categorises questions based on difficulty level. And even if it did, it would make no sense as something difficult for you may be easy for me and vice-versa, isn't it? :)

SC questions in GMAT test around 9-10 different grammar rules / concepts, which you may find in any GMAT prep guide. I used Manhattan SC guide and OG 10 for clearing my concepts and all other resources for practice. Please don't underestimate the official explainations for SC questions in OG 10 and OG11 though they seem a little unorganised in categorising various types of questions - They are mines of information and concepts and clearly illustrate how GMAT analyses and eliminates options.

Manhattan Sentence Correction is one of the best and most organized Sentence Correction books I've read.
They convert many aspects of the language into rules which significantly reduces the errors on our part...
Besides, it also has topic relevant questions picked up from OG10; so that should take care of both your questions.

Hi,

Your first strategy seems fine to me....just make sure to take a full length test every two weeks right from beginning of the preparation.

After you are finished with both Verbal & Maths learning....start taking lotsa full length tests..

It's fine to concentrate on one subject at a time but at the same time we must make sure that touch with other subject is not lost and we continue cementing the concepts thru regular practice.

You guys are starting your preparation at just the right time...you will have enough time for GMAT and the process beyond it...

Let me quickly chart out a plan of action for you...

Start GMAT Preparation Now..

March 2009-----Take GMAT

March-August 2009-----Work on the shady areas of your profile, add few new dimensions to it and short-list universities.

August 2009---start preparing your applications....write essays and work on getting recommendations.

September/October/November 2009----submit your application well before the first deadline.

This way, you will have your interview in oct/Nov/December 2009 and the final result would be known by No/Dec/January....
Just as in my case...in Dec 2007, I had 3 admits for starting my MBA in fall 2008.

Good luck guys...

Let me know if you need any help/guidance. However hard I try, I abstain from PG for long periods...hence PM is a better option...

I did lot of practise papers, but still I dont find any improvement in my verbal.Any suggestions..

As of now, the POA for you should be to get your materials straight!

Research well...see which books really work for you. I'm talking Kaplan/Princeton/MG here...Don't even think about Barron's and don't even think about leaving OG!

Once the books are set, stick to it, come rain or shine! Well, if you have the time, you could read them all, but I've heard over and over from the achievers that it's better to revise the 'already-read' material than to read new material!

I have started with OG, but I guess that book alone isn't sufficient. I have heard some of my colleagues refering to study materials from Institutes like Acheiver's POint or something, not sure about the quality of such materials, got any inputs?
Let's do one thing, we'll touch base on Saturday evenings, with whatever inputs we have over the week.

HI All,Let me start with few things i observed during my first GMAT prep.1) OG 10th and 11th edition - These books will familiarise you with the type of questions asked in the exam. Of course, as many say, if one is able to understand why rather than what questions went wrong during timed tests in the OG, it is going to fetch a lot the the whole prep.2) Learning from mistakes is the key for GMATPrep. Thus, practicing a lot will bring us into a shining zone both in verbal as well as quant abilities.3) Kaplan 800 will bring a better picture on questions which may not be felt easy at GMAT. So a blended preparation strategy with Kaplan and OG is what most of the successful GMATians suggest. Kaplan helps us to step up one more level during preparation.4) Arco,Nova,Barron's are considered to be the tertiary set of material referred to before the exam(by most of the GMATians.Of course, each one has a different approach towards GMAT). These would be suggestible if time permits or if practice demands.5) Most of the Indians(about 60-70% of the posts i observe from) feel Verbal to be the monster ahead of them. There should be a concrete and systematic approach in attacking the verbal section as it arrives into the picture after a strenuous and tiresome two and half hours of effort. This should be convincingly closed to facilitate a fitting end. As per my observation, these could help in a preparation for the three sections in verbal.RC - To read faster and comprehend better, try to figure out articles which seem to be really uninteresting and dull. Nothing should be able to fascinate or instigate your mind to have a pre-emptive conclusion/logic about the article. Try to figure out few things out of it. The author's tone, what are the underlying assumptions, what are the key phrases and liners in the article that makes the passage meaningful, infact one sided and last but not least a title for the entire article which clearly portrays the flow of the passage.CR- Be narrow minded. Dont allow your mind to use its intelligence to make some presumptions about the topic. Practice 4 main scenarios - supporting argument, contradicting argument, assumption behind the argument, conclusion or a filling end to the argument.SC- Be clear about the basic ground rules. Never one can straightaway mark all the questions correct after reading/revising the rules. Practice improves applicability of rules.6) And about the hours of preparation, it purely depends on the candidate. If someone is really good at Inequalities/Permutations and combinations/Probability/Sets in Quant and any of the two sections in Verbal, they surely will carry an edge. I feel a dedicated effort of 25-30 hours a week for 2-3 months will be able to add value to the preparation.7) The sticky posts in this forum seem to be having a variation of questions asked at GMAT. Probably these might help in resolving some fillers in concepts. For time management and motivation, previous experiences are always there.So let us start with unity and better participate actively in discussions about the strategy. But it is time to start rather than to discuss and wait at the shore for the ship.If any one is interested in my experiences/thoughts about GMAT/MBA, you may visit my blog. I am also planning to take the exam somewhere around march-april and me too weak in verbal..RC and CR are the sections seem to be a real threat.

As a suggestion,start with OG 11th edn. and you will get it easily at any good book shop,even you can buy online aswell.start with it initially...successful test takers say this is bible for the exam.Also download 2 free full test from mba.com.give yourself 15-20 days to build confidence to be able to answer verbal ques.

Also,reading habit is always good..but for that matter you must not stress on news paper reading..I think OG RC's are quite well articulate to meet the required challenge.

First of all,I would like you to wish all the best for the exam....teleboy,1st you register in mba.com and get the gmat prep s/w..you will get two full length test and as per with actual gmat....if you want to spend then also go for the 6 MGMAT test.
Currently I am just focussing on Og11 .my weak area has been the verbal and still just cant get hold of it:frown:...SC is quite OK but real threat in RC n CR...aiming for 7**...
