Total work exp {full-time}in 2 companies - 7.5 yrs (ITES) with 1.5 yrs in Manufacturing Services as Analyst.
The Xlri brochure under the eligibility states :
For GMP, ....He/She should be employed in a full-time job and must have at least five years of relevant managerial experience as on March 31, 2012 after completion of graduation. The candidates should ensure that he/she possesses the relevant experience certificate (or evidence of such experience) along with releasing letter at the time of joining the program.

Never been a 'Manager' though, do I fit the bill?

Hi. I am new to this thread and would be grateful for a reply to my query.

My profile is as follows:

10th std: 90%
12th std: 76%
BE (electrical): 63% aggregate
GMAT: 710 (QA- 49, VA - 38, AWA - 5.5)
Work ex- 6 years
Lot of extra-curriculars at school and college level but not much after I started working

I have 6 years of experience as a Project Manager in supply, erection and commissioning of power plant equipment in the captive power sector. I work in a globally renowned German MNC.

I had applied to XLRI's GMP in January 2011, however my application was rejected. I had approached a student who was taking the GMP course at that time to ensure that there were no loopholes in my application form. I tried to get a feedback from XLRI for the reasons for rejection but apparently XLRI does not have a feedback system like ISB.

I am planning to re-apply to the GMP this year with the same GMAT score, once the admissions for the 2013-14 batch start. Although there has been no change in my work profile since the last I applied for this course, I have handled some very prestigious projects in the intervening period. I am not sure why my application was rejected, especially because there are limited fields in the GMP application form to able to judge a candidate's profile completely. Can anyone suggest the possible reasons for rejection of my application and how I can improve this time?

24 th may is the last date. We can expect atleast a movement of another 2 -3 seats

Since I have already 7+ yrs of exp in one IT major, I would not like to persue for 2yrs. My problem is that this Yr only I came to know in detail that 1 Yr corse reputation also exist in our country. But by then majority of good colleges date had already crossed. I could apply only K J Somaiya and got selected. Now I have to decide and tell by 21st May to the Institute. So here is the question - should I join or I should invest one more year for CAT and GMAT(never taken before) to apply in good colleges like XL, SPJ, MDI or IIMs . I am BE(CS) graduate from the city. There are two factors that is letting me lean towards KJS. First, very nominal fee(5L) compare to other institutes. And second that they will be providing AICTE approve PGDM(Exec). Again forgive me as I am out off core discussion this thread

Ok. Sorry for getting your question wrong!
The executive MBA is gradually coming up in our country and a number of reputed brand names have started their course as well. I believe in coming decade the scenario will shape up pretty well give to the competiton factor among the schools and the requirement of this kind of MBA.

As for your dilemma , it is upto you whether you want to wait one more year for creating more options and taking exams.You can decide based on the following pointers:
1.Your readiness for 1 more year wait
2.What are the positive changes you can bring in your profile in a year that will help you get an entry to your school of choice
3.Research on schools and programs. I think you have missed this part this year!
4.Allignment of the program with your goal.
5.Your work ex : in which bracket of of the age range of the batch is it fallling
etc..

Regarding some of your concerns:
1.Dont look at the fees to decide the school. MBA is a long term investement , not recoverable in a couple of years.
2.XLRI GMP also got AICTE approval this year. Having saod that many other schools do not have AICTE approval. Although its a good thing to have , however its absence doesnt make sea difference.

Finally , in my personal opinion , if you are ready to wait a year , then you should give XL , IIMs and others a shot after taking GMAT!

There are pros and cons of 2-yr MBA against 1-yr at this juncture (5-6 years of workex). Following generic points are my take:

Pros:
1. 2-year => more time to learn things and specialize in a particular area
2. Changing one's stream might be easier if one is keen on doing so.
3.2-yr break from maddening work and 2-yr fulfilling campus life (greatest incentive for me ;))

Cons:
1. Investing 2 yr at this juncture can be tough because of opportunity cost of one year
2. In 2-yr course , during campusing , participants above 5+ years of expereince might be slightly in a strategic disadvantagous situation , especially if he seeks to change his career stream totally.
3. Students having family may find it tough to refrain from work for 2 years.

However, all the above points are quite subjective. It depends on the school you will be joinning , your post-MBA goal , your profile, personal preference.

Having said that , with clear vision and utter focus towards goal should sail you thru towards your career goal with a befitting program.

As for me,I myself got 98.95 %ile in CAT this year , but not joinning any 2-yr course (there are personal resaons and problems associated although).

So I would recommend , do little brainstorm yourself , speak to peers , seniors and then take a decision. Once you take the decision dont regret it.

I would advise you not to rush into an decision. Take some time, crystallize your objectives of doing an MBA . . . Your post MBA Goals . . . This will help you decide whether you should go for a one year or 2 year Course. Once decided, some reasearch on the institutes offering the course and its alignment with your long term objectives through avilable information and alumni interaction will enable you freeze upon the set of B schools that would be the best fit whereafter you can proceed with your applications.

While I am unaware of your profile and am myself an aspirant, one vital fact is that we would be investing a substantial sum of money, time and efforts in the endeavour . . . It makes sense to take an informed decision and make most of the opportunity towards our end goals.

You are right, it is not good to speculate. But the admission office only says that wait and you will get an email if you get thru. They are not able to give any timeline even a tentative one. Every day is eating into very little time left for notice period if one gets thru.

From the GMP FB group, it seems that WL38 was cleared today with the person getting an email in the evening with last date of payment 21st May. This is the only information I know. :)

As per some quotes above, assuming mails were sent till WL 35 on 7th and till WL 37 on 8th .. I guess the WL candidates who got confirmation mails in first list were asked to pay by 14th .. so if few of them wouldn't have paid by 14th, the WL would have moved beyond 37 .. does it mean that there is no veccant seat now and that is why no WL movement after 14th?
Also, even if the WL moves .. the amount of time remaining is so little that every days delay is making it more difficult to get released

WL 37 had got the email on 8th, very next day of 2ND LIST. No emails were sent after 8th, so guys don't loose hope, as the XL Admission guy says, wait and please keep checking emails!!!

Just called up Adcom. The documents that we have sent will go to Accounts dept. from Adcom. After their verification , students will get a receipt as hard copy in their respective address.

I checked with the Admissions office today. What they say is that you are going to get the receipt of the payment after 15 days form today.

The official ones will be posted in you address.

And I asked them whether they can check if my seat has been confirmed, their answer was if you have paid via RTGS ypu don't need to worry.

Now I don't know what to make of it...

I have been offered a seat here but i am still counting on getting an offer from a different programme, any take on how much would i lose if i make the initial payment and then withdraw my candidature ?? (of course before the course commences). I have no choice but to play this gamble and i felt it would be wrong to ask the college authorities about it.

You stand to lose Rs. 1000/- if you withdraw before course commences. That's a standard as per AICTE norms. I suppose the college has mentioned this in the email they must've sent you.
btw, may I ask what school are you waiting to hear from?

b) Having said that , placement took a hit in all the b-schools this year given the financial turmoil. Banking sector has been affected badly and the repurcussions were evident in the placement of many other leading b-schhols of the country as well. Hence placement is a function of next year's economic scenario as well.

3."It means We will be Jobless for 3 More Months " - the nitty gritty of the 3-month's program is yet to be decided. Hence it will be early to comment. Personally , being 3 more months jobless (read student) augurs well for a greater good in future.

1. Saving 1.5L is OK but look for broader prospects! Taking 1 Year break is in itself a big deal which adds up to the fees paid by some 8-9L pa. And 3 months (assuming from current batch and new pay-package) will sum up to 1.5-2L around. Hope you understand my calculations :)!!

2. (a) Declining an offer does not necessarily mean Good Jobs!! Quality Jobs are more important!!! Official Update will only come once the course has started.

(b)I agree but The scenario was bad in GMP to somewhat greater extent as all the persons joining were experienced still the average package was less in comparison to 2 Yr programs and other 1 Yr programs.

3. As everyone agrees 3 Months is a long time at this stage of life when we in our early 30s. Most of us are not bachelors I assume!!

4. International Immersion was the charm of the Program as no other college offers such exposure. I have enquired with many ex-students who said it was quite a good learning experience and it definitely Adds to your CV post-GMP.

5. For timing, it is still unclear!!

Got the confirmation yesterday but also got to know that the course is 15 Months. It means We will be Jobless for 3 More Months and after that the Package will not be that big either!!


Looking towards the Current Trend of Placement, there is decline in it from last year's. So Skeptical what to do now.

its not good to compare B schools but then Great lakes is also a good school with some very good professors and the placement has also been very good..rest all depends on your evaluation...

Could you please explain the rationale behind posting the same post repeatedly in various formats?

Secondly, I am wondering whether you have sound information on the timing of the placements? I think discussion is still ON. Hence it wont be a good idea to assume something and place sarcastic comment on that. FYI - excerpt from the post from PG homepage..

To put it in another word , the concern expounded by you is shared by many in this forum including the school itself I believe. Hence the best thing would be to wait for concrete information or put across the query to the seniors.

Thirdly , choosing a b-school is subjective. To a greater extent it depends upon your requirement and personal call. However , personally I think : XL brand name is a premiere one and an investment in MBA should be considered a long term investment. Hence comparing on the face of immediate placement might not be the right idea.

Last but not the least , in this thread we are mostly discussing XLRI GMP instead of comparing various programs from various b-schools.

So if you have specific query , I think seniors would be happy enough to answer them.
