i suggest you visit XL and see the situation yourself.XL-GMP has many drawbacks ( esp.in terms of placement profiles available,virtually no consuting companies,etc )which you will realise.i for one doubt the institute management's commitment to the program .this program is a step child , and they are merely looking at it as a cash cow. the 2 yr program remains the flagship .

Also please float your resume in the market and see what kind of job you can get with your present profile. People from core sector,PSU's come from a insular working enviroment which creates problems during placements.if companies are willing to offer you a job in today's enviroment , go ahead and join GMP.

a MBA is not a panacea for all ills.People get frustated with their jobs and rush into the 1 yr programs without giving a thought about the pro&cons; , the strenghts of the institute,etc . This does not help and people from IT/Non-IT backgrounds with poor work-ex and junk profiles will not gain anything from a 1 yr MBA in the present enviroment.(Just look at what has happened at ISB this year ).

Forget what happened in the past couple of years.you might have even seen ostriches fly then. Now the tide has gone out and a large no of people ( Esp IT guys ) have been found to be swimming naked.

about the scholar loan from SBI
Just went to the andheri branch to have a chat with the bank manager for the loan. The loan for GMP cannot be given by any SBI branch ( according to the manager). This loan can only be given by the SBI branch in Jamshedpur. The loans are cleared at the branch level.

He also showed me a file whose loan application he is going to reject. Its for the same GMP program at XLRI. He didnt show me the name. According to a SBI circular any branch is allowed to give a loan for 2 year XLRI programme not the 1 year one. So the loan applicants will have to approach the SBI Jamshedpur branch......

One question that you should ask/ enquire is - Suppose you take a sabbatical and then join back your company after program is over, would you be joining at the same profile/level or would you be appropriately be given a hiogher profile/level?

Because in my company (Private) after a person comes back from sabbatical he is given an all together different profile at a higher level. So this bit of information might also help you in taking a decision...in these hard times.

I am in WL and right now just i have decided to send the DD required.

My confusion/dilemma was whether to join it on study leave or to wait for
couple of years to go ahead.
As in the case of 2yrs courses and wd SPjain and IIMs ...they have no
objection in allowing u to appear for campus placement, but wd XlRI...they
would never allow u...Infact current batch student told me that they have
made sugestion on this point as of grim situation, if person comes on
Sabbatical/study leave the adcom should allow them for campus.

They suggested me if u got a gud strength there u can force/mould them on
this regard. To check this i talked at placement cell ........receivd by
Miss Rashmi and then called Mr Rajiv and the point was clear.....We work
on ethics so we can't allow u for campus if ur on study leave.

Also as the GMPs placement starts abt in Feb so i inquired abt resigning in
jan, but the point is that Palcement broucher is made ready by oct and if u r till then on study leave then ur name would not be included in that list so u have to resign. So the atmost time to decide after joining is till Sep.

For all the Private sector students...u all could get gud opportinity after
doing MBA wd study leave. But for my case wd any PSU it is quite
difficult..(as far as i think so)......

So is there any benefit and peace of mind if u go wd study leave. (agnst 5
ppl from my company who went for SPjain on study leave and they r allowed to go wd campus placement also).....So should i prefer SPj to XLRI..........

called up Adcom today. Lady responded well. confirmed my payment and said on 28th of this month ,the status of waitlisted candidates would be known.
Meanwhile, she said they have started sending offer letters to waitlisted candidates as some converts turned down the offer.

So now that we need to wait another week of sleepless nights...lets make it interesting..by extrapolating things...

Two things that come to mind are (IMO):
1. Last year seats were 100 and waiting list moved till 15. This year seats are 120 hence there is a fair chance of waiting list moving a bit more....;)

2. Again this year people have been conservative in applying for the course , people from other parts of the world apart from India and US couldnot make it to the interview...so taking all these aspects it seems that a major chunk of people applying & converting would be grabbing up there seats...so that does not look rosy, for us on WL...

Whatever happens.... one thing is sure, that in the long run we would realise that it did happen for good...
So folks let us help ourselves in concentrating on our individual daily work till next monday.......:thumbsup:

In the mean time...inputs/ Info regardin admissions, placements etc, from the present batch would be much appreciated.....

The fact that they wanted to come back, by itself doesnt really mean much.. What exactly did they do after they quit ? Where did they do it ? Are they coming back because they didnt get anything better or are they being welcomed back to the home ground, with obscenely high salaries ? Unless we know the background, its hard to let this simple fact influence a decision.

This is just like any other opportunity or call it a gamble if you want. You can choose to grab the opportunity, when it presents itself or decide to pass saying thats its risks far outweigh its rewards. So if your risk appetite doesnt allow you to quit and do an mba, well, thats what you should do - bye bye mba.

Just recieved the snail mail from XLRI, wherein they have communicated that we (waitlisted candidates) need to pay 20K through draft, by 25th April.

As some person who left my company 4 this course are now trying to come back on the earlier position. So is it be good tht we should wait for couple of more years (as i have just completed 5 yrs of job) and then go for this course.

Ans : XLRI has provided better than expected accomodation facilities to its GMP students. Following are the features :

a. There are 4 blocks earmarked for GMP (The GMP hostel is separate and far away from BM and PMIR hotels and is within campus)
b. Blocks A and B are for family accomodation while blocks C and D are for folks who do not wish to bring their families.
c. Details of family flats :
1. There are around 48 family flats
2. Each flat is a 1 BHK flat with a single attached bathroom and a small
washing area.
3. 1 Airconditioner, 2 Cots, 2 mattresses,1 almirah (enuf space), curta-
ins, 1 study table, 1 chair, big dressing mirror (dressing table not
available), Internet connection, Intercom facility (STD can be taken
on the phone) and rack for keeping books.
4. Each floor has 6 such flats with 4 floors in each block.
5. Kitchen is bit small but manageable.
6. Hot water 24-hrs available free of cost.
7. In the current batch, family folks are paying electricity and
telephone charges( in case of local/STd calls) extra on top of the

well er_jaspal i have joined SP Jain's 1 yr MBA course leaving my comfortable and assured job behind even though i had the option of availing study leave. See the situation is tough today but that does not mean that it will never improve. Moreover investment in education never goes in vain. As far as placements are concerned, people are getting placed even in these times. May be the sky high packages are not there in the market now. MBA will certainly add value to your overall profile and your understanding of the business. So i think it wont be a bad idea to do your MBA next year. By the time your placements will start (in 2011), economy would certainly have improved. At least hope so...

I'm on the WL and wanted to have an estimate of when any update for WL candidates would be available.

The waitlist candidates are generally confirmed around 2-3 days after the last date of paying first installment for confirmed candidates. So, based on this date, you can guess when waitlist will move.

Very less likely that Administration will allow you to defer the course. However, you should definitely try your best if you think you have a strong case.Please pursue your case with Admissions Chairperson Mr. Rajeev Sharma.

Abhikr, im of the strong belief that doing something is better than doing nothing. Rather than just sit and wait for the axe to fall or in your own words, wait for the tide to go out, its better to do an MBA now.

Given that you seem to be a highly opinionated and knowledgeable person, I would like to know what have you decided to do during this recession? Doing mba, of late, has become a herd mentality. People do it cos there neighbors did it... Its mostly seen as the easy way to make quick moolahs. And boom time it did happen that lots of 'not so deserving' candidates made hay (the Sun was obviously bright and sunny at that time).

With the current market scenario, there are two ways at looking at things. Either this is an oppurtune time to join, cases where people have been given pink slips or see no growth prospect in their current job position. These people are betting big on the fact that in couple of years time the clouds of recession will scatter and they can come out on top. This definetely involves risk.

The second perspective, hold on to what you have and let the markets stabalize before who jump the bandwagon. This is a decent bet since the market after stabalizing does remain good for some years.

The crux is, timing your exit from a B-school matters a lot. I am a techie (03 passout) and have seen the 2001-02 bubble burst. Lots of my seniors, though brilliant, had to struggle to even get a call centre job. My juniors had multiple job offers. Same is true for the GMP program. The 08 passouts had both their hands in honey pot. 09 passout are having a torrid time (hope they get good placements, cos as I mentioned they are no less, or probably better than the 08 batch)

I have provided an honest perspective on the things, the way I percieve it. Apologies if I hurt any sentiments or rubbed people the wrong way.

People from core sector,PSU's come from a insular working enviroment which creates problems during placements.if companies are willing to offer you a job in today's enviroment , go ahead and join GMP.

a MBA is not a panacea for all ills.People get frustated with their jobs and rush into the 1 yr programs without giving a thought about the pro&cons; , the strenghts of the institute,etc . This does not help and people from IT/Non-IT backgrounds with poor work-ex and junk profiles will not gain anything from a 1 yr MBA in the present enviroment.(Just look at what has happened at ISB this year ).

Forget what happened in the past couple of years.you might have even seen ostriches fly then. Now the tide has gone out and a large no of people ( Esp IT guys ) have been found to be swimming naked.

Are all the person joining the course are quite sure about the future....

As if we consider the curent placement scenerio and dismal economy we can't say anything about our future there. So is it wise enough to leave a quite comfortable and assured job (like mine as in PSU) to go for this course and jeopard our future.

As some person who left my company 4 this course are now trying to come back on the earlier position. So is it be good tht we should wait for couple of more years (as i have just completed 5 yrs of job) and then go for this course.

so I want to know the other persons point of view tht why r they going to join this course ??..... and whether they would leave their comp or would come at study leave.

Also with study leave we can't enjoy the benefit of campus placement so ....... its difficult to decide at this juncture.

Last year, snail mails started coming on 3rd april.
Some got thru courier while others got it thru regd post.
There were folks who recvd letters on 8th april.
