Well, interview will be mostly based on what you have written in your application essays like why this MBA, why at this point of time, what is your value addition to the MBA and stuff like that.

The faculty in this college is really good. Some of the profs are industry people and have a lot of experience. You do get a good mix of students as well. In our batch close to 50% are internationals (20% are indians).

Though the course is pretty hectic, we do have a lot of fun around.

Thanks ... but the only problem is that all of the money does not come under one bank and is spread across different investments and savings and hence it will be a pain for the person reading to put it all together .. hence I thought of the CA certificate.

I think it would be better if you could get it attested by your banker as well

I have paid the deosit for joining in UIUC. When I enquired about the financial documents, they said that the one which I had sent is sufficient for them to issue the I-20. So I just need to fax them the Student Verification Form.

Any of you guys, who are joining UIUC, is from South India??

I did not know you need an I-20 .. I thought the admission letter would do. Anyway, my father is getting all that done

I paid my deposit last week and I have been talking the the mba office sine then. I sent out the financial capability certificate with my application itself. But according to them that is not enough .. they need the whole 'shabang'

Here is the email I got from them :

You will need to have an official and original copy of a statement showing the exact amount of funds available for withdrawal. The following financial documents are allowed:
Checking, Savings, Cash Reserves
Post Office Funds
Credit Union Share Savings, Share Draft
Accounts tied to Prime Rate such as a Money Market
CDs, Installment CDs, Installment Savings (if mature before start of the semester: no penalty; if mature after start of semester: 6% penalty) the 6% will be deducted from the total of available funds
Trust funds (Discretionary Funds only)
Pensions (on a case by case basis)
Student loans


So basically you need original certificates for everything ... I have applied for the student loan and hopefully should get it approved by sometime next week ...

I think i have decided to join UIUC for fall 2008. I would be paying the deposit shortly.

I went through the UIUC site regarding the Declaration and certification documents to be sent for procuring the I20.
So what they expect is, a letter from the bank stating that me/my father (who would be sponsoring me) have enough liquid assets to cover the entire expenses for 1 year. Some sort of a solvency certificate.
Is this what they expect. And do they require any additional documents for financials?

Well I spoke to students from both the first year and second year of the MBA program and I did hear some hidden groans about the placement cell. That said, the same holds true for most of the university's below the top 10-15 rankings.

Since UIUC is not in a big city, it does take that extra effort to seek out potential recruiters and internship opportunities. But then again as everybody says, a lot depends on an individual's networking skills.

On the scholarship front, second year students do get chances to earn scholarships (especially with high grades and active participation in student clubs), but the scholarship amounts are not big. Both the guys I spoke to said that most of the second year students try and get on campus jobs for additional 'coffee money'.

In my opinion, joining UIUC would be more about what career goals you have in mind and how best can the MBA program help you achieve them.

I might be wrong here, so take what I say with a pinch of salt ...

I have heard that a lot of internationals @ Cox, have trouble landing up with plum internship offers. Many of them have to contend with taking up an internship offer that pays them nothing, or close-to-nothing.

So as an international student considering Cox, it might be wiser to be prepared that one might not be able to save any cash during the summers.

Making a list of the pros and cons of both schools might help you to decide.

Received the call from UIUC Admission office yesterday, asking me to confirm by April 15th. So in a dilemma whether to join or wait.

as per the UIUC site, the fees for the 1st year is mentioned to be: $51432
any idea abt the 2nd year expenses? can any senior give some idea abt this?

hw are u ppl planning to varun, mental guy n others hw are u ppl arranging for the financial aids?

if i have only 1st year fees, ie $51432 with me can i apply for a loan in the US?

also if my dad has already taken a loan in India for the course, can i apply for a loan in the US for the same?

I spoke to a couple of MBA students at UIUC and they told me that $51K is just an estimate and the actual expenses are only around $40K-45K. There are schols available in the second year also depending on performance + initiative outside the curriculum.

I am guessing that with the internship and the on campus job that one may take up, second year's expenses should come down (not to mention there are a few one time payments during the first year).

I am not too sure about the applying for loan in the US part. But I do know that you can take up a loan in the US in the second year easily if you have a US cosigner.

The admit email does not contain any fin aid info. It comes along with your admissions package.

What I did was that I called up the admissions office and asked about the fin aid ... they told me that I had received $5K ... I think 5K is usually the token amount everyone gets at UIUC.

The assistant dir of admissions also called me up a couple of days later to congratulate me. Even she told me that I had received $5K aid ...

So you can either wait for the packet or call up the admissions office .

btw .. which college are you planning on joining ?

I had applied to Jan 15th deadline too. I had my interview on Feb 26th and Got an admit yesterday. I called the admissions office last night and they told me that I've landed a 5K schol too !

My two cents ... be very clear while you are talking (don't talk too fast). Try and diversify yourself as much as possible in the interview too ... and avoid run of the mill answers ..
