Hi Saurabh,

I think Smith is better than UIUC especially if you are aiming at finance. It's too good for finance and the location can be an added advantage. Even if you're not aiming at finance the reputation of Smith on the east coast is too good. It's also well ranked. The only issue here, as you've already mentioned, is the total amount you'll have to shell out. It's for you to decide (keeping in mind your financial position) whether it's worth spending the extra amount that you'll have to if you decide to join Smith. Btw, I've heard smith is quite an expensive school. That was a frank opinion but i would be v happy if you decide to join UIUC, for then i'll get a chance to meet you (although i havnt finalized UIUC).

I have another admit as well. Maryland Smith but without any Schol's..Can anyone advice on which to choose. As per my opinion i think maryland is a bit better but uiuc is attractive coz of the schol.

the mail suggests the admission committee will review any scores or additional materials that I submit now... and mentions that following criteria would be reviewed.
1. Professional full-time work experience
2. Outstanding academic performance
3. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
4.Impressive GMAT and TOEFL scores
5. Focused and realistic career goal
6. Strong recommendations
7.Solid evidence of outstanding leadership and teamwork ability

As UIUC asked only for a SOP, will it fine to send essays that could address some of the above quailities?

From what I understand

1) seldom anyone is "rejected"

2) They need Impressive GMAT / TOEFL, i guess 670 (which is above their mean / median class profile) isnt impressive enough. it seems > 700 may seem impressive to them

3) Focused / realistic goals were covered in SOP itself !

4) Solid evidence of outstanding leadership & teamwork ability were covered in SOP / CV

5) the way i see it, waitlist without interview should be read as get an "impressive" score and read the wait list as "Dinged"

@ ayonde Gmat score you will have to give it again unless you have spectacular achievements.Average Gmat score for Indians in any university is higer.

@Pooja : No, I haven't heard from them still. Brian had told me that, he would convey the final decision by 2nd week of Jan. But for Gvc84, who had the interview on 30th, it was told that final decision will be by 20th. So lets play the waiting game for few more days:-)

I will do that on Monday (17th Jan).

Although I hope they don't get irritated.

On 28th December, 2010, I sent an email asking them about the status of my application. I received a reply on 4th January, wherein they said that my application was being reviewed and asked me to be patient.

Anyway, guys, i had my skype video interview on 12th with Jackie wilson, the Dir. of admissions. She said should know in a week -10 days..

I've heard some people getting responses from other schools within 2-3 days..
wanted to know if anyone who's done with the interview has heard back from UIUC? I am getting super tensed even though just gave the interview a couple of days ago..

apart from all this I was asked the following case question -

If a medium sized co is planning to launch a smartfone to replace the largest selling smartfone, what are the factors it should look into.
They just want to see ur reasoning abilities, there is no right or wrong.

The question was something like:
There is an industry which has five major players and the growth rate of the industry is almost saturated. There are two of these five companies which are interested to merge. Would you go ahead with the alliance and if so, what are the factors that need to be considered before arriving at a final decision?

As I said before, there is no black and white answer for this and can be purely subjective, cuz the number of factors that need to be taken in to consideration are vast.

Hope this helps. Just have a glance at some basic case studies and guesstimates. That should set the ball rolling:-)

I had mine with Brian on 29th December. Brian is an extremely polite person and a patient listener. He started off by saying few things about UIUC MBA and then later told about what info he seeks from each candidate(the same, why MBA, why UIUC, Goals and more dope on your career progression). So I spoke for 45 minutes, uninterrupted about these 4 aspects of the application and there were not many counter-questions, during the course of my monologue.
Later, he asked very generic case and I was a tad puzzled by the vagueness of the case and probed him for some specific information before, i can analyze and suggest any recommendations. Don't worry, it's simple stuff and there is no right/wrong answer. Just the thought process is what matters the most
The entire interview lasted for around 70 odd minutes and all I can say is its not formulaic. It can revolve around multitude of topics, depending on your experience. So try to enjoy the conversation and you will do well.
BTW, gvc04 or anyone else has received the final admission decision?
