I am an Engineering grad...and have started my preps for GMAT..need assistance on basics now...
My details are:
B.Tech - NIT Warangal-Mechanical 2008 Batch- 7.73 CGPA(distinction)
Extra Curricular in College- average. Not secy postion, but worked for clubs and events.
Did 2 projects at IIT and 1 internship in Castrol.

professional experience:
1) Whirlpool of India - Strategic Sourcing- 2.9 years.
2) Teach for India Fellow - May 2011 - April 2013.
( to know abt Teach for India - Teach For India)

I am planning for the fall of 2013 and targetting Ivy league colleges .
My questions are:
1) considering my background and considering B schools like HBS,Stanford,LBS, what wd be an ideal GMAT score.
2) when shall I apply for admission into fall 2013
3) do u think IVY leagues are gettable considering my background and assuming 720 GMAT score.
4) what else shall i plan to do to better my chances.

Work ex- 3 years (2 years family business, was responsible for adding and marketing various new products in the product line offered. Traveled extensively across India and established an excellent network for these product. After that 1 year as Prop Derivative trader trading STIR markets and Fixed income markets)

CFA level 2 cleared, FRM cleared. Also cleared the first 3 levels of MS finance course from ICFAI university.

HULT as a brand is reputed worldwide.
But considering your experience, Id say dont go for Dubai.
If it was Boston or San Francisco, Id have said.. Go ahead..
Unless you have a very strong network (Which im sure you would have, in 10 years of work ex) dont take it.

Its a personal opinion, though.

3) HULT is better in terms of ROI & the overall cost. HULT is going to cost 30K USD less as compared to USC
4) USC Marshall is in LA & HULT is in San Fran. Both are placed nicely in terms of location

I am confused between ROI/cost vs Brand/reputation.

Please help me in making a choice here.

Both are Great colleges in their own regard.
Dont consider me to be opinionated, as Im joining HULT San Francisco this september myself.

HULT is a rising star, and it has risen around 31 points in the FT rankings this year. And the obvious advantages you mentioned are too big to ignore.

Better ROI, Better Location (Marginally), should rest the case in HULT's favour in my opinion.

And just to add, if you want to become fluent in French, please start now because the MBA course is very very intensive and you might not be able to spare too much time once you join the b-school. hope this helps!

I know I am sounding a bit negative, but this is the case.

Ah I can understand your apprehension :)

Regarding the UK I understand your apprehensions. But just that in my personal opinion, i would still rate UK (or any English speaking country) a safer haven than France, Spain or Germany, purely from a native language perspective.

But yes, your apprehensions about the rating of Nottingham school are true too. I would suggest contacting a few current students and alums to get more definitive answers. Also there is a thread on PG about Tier-2 B-schools in the UK. You might get some more information there.

I'll try and provide a partial answer here:

1) UK vs. France: How well do you know French? If you are not able to have a fluent conversation, I would not advice going to France, except for INSEAD and HEC b-schools.

2) Visa rules in UK: Compared to what we had earlier, the rules pose 1 slight disadvantage and 1 slight advantage. The disadvantage is that the PSW rule is gone. But a new clause under Tier-2 is being introduced which would help us get employment there, if the employer agrees to sponsor it. The 2 advantages is that there is no cap on these if applied from within UK and the labor test needed earlier (to prove that a candidate from EU could not be found) is NOT required. So kinda easier for all non-EU candidates?

I have got offers from Nottingham Business School (UK), Rouen Business school (France). I am waiting for EMYLON business school (France) post interview result & got an interview call from Strathclyde Business School (Glasgow).

I am very much interested in joining EMYLON (if I am able to make it) .However, if in case I am unable to convert it, where should I go?

Incorrect. Your college name is printed on your visa (which is a sticker stuck in your passport).

Been researching about MBA for a while now, but the confusion still prevails.
My doubts are very elemental and most of the old-timers here might have ready answers for them.

Q1. Whether the time is right for an MBA!!!
My Profile is like this:
Class X - 84%
Class XII - 76%
Grad - BE (Mech), SJCE Mysore (Under VUT, Belgaum) - 76%
Work Ex - ~7 yrs as Asst. Manager (5.3 yr in Shipbuilding Proj Mgt+Design and 1.5 yrs in BD Oil & Gas). All in India. Shipbuilding part of exp. in strategic defense projects for Indian Navy.
Heaps of extra-curricular activities all throughout. Was also a district level TT player during school.

Q2. MBA from top 5 B-schools in India or MBA from abroad?
My target post MBA is middle to senior level position in corporate strategies or Proj Mgt domain in companies dealing with mechanical products/services or in management consultancy. Also open to IT industry, as a second choice. With this, should a B School within India be targeted or going abroad is worth.

Q3. What colleges can be targeted with a GMAT score of 650-720?
Q4. What would be an average spend for a good B-School in India and a similar one abroad?
Q5. Any tips on how to go about the GMAT exam. Considering that I start working on it from today?

Hi Sunil,

1) From a selection point of view, yes, you seem to have decent work exp. to be eligible for an MBA. Now the choice is completely your if you feel that this time is apt for you or not. Good profile I must say :)

2) Going abroad provides international exposure which no Indian school can match, not even ISB. But yes, any foreign school adds to the burden on your pockets. In my (personal) opinion, you are too experienced for a traditional IIM programme (PGDM i mean). And an exec MBA or an MBA from ISB would cost close to 25 lakh or more if I include living and other expenses. A 1 year MBA from abroad would cost you close to 15 lakh more. Now you can choose if international exposure is important for you or not.

3) If you have a score above 680, you can target any college you want. But given the high competition from India, I would recommend you target AT LEAST 700. The more the merrier.

hey Mr. Mittal,

You seem to have a well-rounded profile, but I do hope that you do realize that ur GMAT score is below par. I am an Oxford admit this year, and I know that people do make it thru at such scores too... but they are very few... plz check the Oxford MBA website to see what the median scores are. And I would recommend re-writing GMAT and targeting a score of ~700. Nothing flashy like 770 or so, 700+ should help you.

And your thoughts about fake profile etc are incorrect. Colleges make no such assumptions. It is upto us to create a story between our past (education and professional) and our future (ambitions, goals, roles)... just focus on it. And yes, again, having a low GMAT score hampers your chance as it spoils your acads...

Dude,

Which two universities are you talking about? Whatever you select, post MBA opportunities in Europe is generally sucks. UK govt announced job cuts in lakhs. Most of Europe is soon to follow. Post MBA, getting a work VISA is also tough, very tough. The slightest infraction will make you ineligible for a longer VISA.

However, there are two places in Europe where there is still stimulus in the economy - Switzerland and Belgium. There are a couple of good universities there and both countries have excellent immigration stats.

You need to make an appointment with the consulate and go to the consulate with the I-20 from the new school. They will cancel the F-1 visa which was granted on the basis of the I-20 to the previous school and will issue a new visa (they can also cancel the previous visa and refuse to issue any new visa). They have SEVIS tracking system, so the visa is valid only for one school which is responsible for tracking your stay in USA and reporting to USCIS if you do not register as a full-time student. You can probably enter the USA on the F-1 visa for the previous school. However, as soon as that school does not report that you are registered for classes, you visa is immediately cancelled, which means that you will have to leave the USA immediately. The visa is not transerrable between schools. You have to make a separate application for that after you complete the degree from the first school if you then want to enroll in a new school.

I have a query regarding visa process. I have an offer from a B school in US for the FT MBA in fall 2011. I am completing my visa formalities and will go for an visa interview by month end..
Now, I think I might receive another offer from a better B school by the end of the month..So, is it possible to change the college after the completion of the visa process?

Engineering student. Not expecting great results with the cramming oriented study system

Working in Social Media with an MNC for the past two years with a full time job guarantee after graduation.Am leading the team there and have helped increase business by almost 80% year on year . Also freelancing with a few other major brands which includes international exposure and work experience with them.

Questions time : Will this experience aid me in any way ? I know that full time experience is essential but will this be counted as something additional alongside or is it in vain ?

Secondly.. how important are undergraduate grades when going in for MBA. Was an ace student in school. Had achieved AIR 8 or so in the NSTSE exams etc..

So basically , if i can tackle the GMAT scores , will my average performance at the undergrad level seriously hamper my chances ?

Would appreciate an answer / help via PM if possible due to the rather fast paced nature of the forum.

1. Check with your university. They are the ones who prepare transcripts.
2. I think DHL has a application package rate or something exclusive for university admission application packets. Costs 1000-2000 I think - not sure - but you can check.
3. Before Aug should be ideal IMO
4. Depends on a case basis. I do not have an avg time now.
5. There is an application portal, where you fill in ur applcation online. Everything, esssays, recos, resume is online. Check out sites for something that says 'Apply Now'
6. Not sure now
7. Not sure again

And yeah just to add, readin and scouring the school websites and the forum can give you loads of info. You just have to be a bit patient.

How many days it takes to reach USA by post and whats the cost per sending Transcript to university?
If I am planning to apply for 1st deadline,when should I give my GMAT?
Even if granted a non US co-signer loan,how many days it take to complete all the formalities?

to answer ur last question abt credit card... ICICI bank offers international credit cards against a fixed deposit. the minimum amt for the FD is Rs.50,000/- there is no upper limit... however the purchasing limit on the card will be 85% of the FD amount
so if u have an FD of Rs.1,00,000/- u will be able to make a purchase of max Rs.85,000/- using the credit card.

not sure abt other banks... i think u can call the customer care n check in case they have come up with new offers...

Could somebody let me know, how should i prepare....I intend to go for self preparation, as Math is my strong area and what i need for math is something like practice book only. I am from a merchant navy background and I have a small query. after graduation my work ex is 6 months but overall that means including the cadetship its around 2 years.
So I was thinking should I go for sailing gain some experience and then apply to the institutes or should I go for GMAT straightway and apply ?? Well it's been almost one and a half years I'm at home dropped full year for CAT and got around 91 percentile.
Now thinking instead of doing from any good bschool in India I should try outside as it will be a major transformation in my career. Also if I sail for another 1.5 years I will gain experience and can earn some money for the course as well .,,.. Please any insights into this ....

In my career journey, I observed first major downfall. To get the extra leap in my career, should I do an MBA?
If the answer is yes,
Does Ex-MBA help? or should go with regular MBA.
In case of Ex-MBA, which colleges are good and do they provide campus selection facility?
Which one should be better? MBA from foreign or India?
I have not appeared for any of common entrance tests. But have spoken to several colleges like Alliance business, Amity, I I P M etc.

I am in a fix and will really appreciate if u guys can provide your advice and recommendations to help me make a decision.

I have admits from few schools for fall 2011 course and i am stuck between choosing Lancaster Business school (UK) and Kelley Business school (USA).

I am looking forward to specialize in marketing strategy or general management (not freezed yet ;))

In a nutshell Lan MBA would cost me around 18 lakhs & Kelley around 35 lakhs (this is including the scholorships & GA's that i have been offered, i know the diffence is huge and so is the reason of my dilemma ).

Would like to hear your perspectives to see if am missing out on any aspect while making my decision.

Well

One thing for sure is a MBA from a top US University is recognised all over the world. And this MBA would actually open up a lot of opportunities that are difficult (not impossible) otherwise.

When you are talking about job security, job satisfaction etc. -
The US MBA looks at itself as a stepping stone to somewhere you can get to. As in, the MBA should be looked as a way to achieve your career goals. More than looking at what the industry needs, evaluate the options that you have and see where your interests lie. Then pick a MBA course that helps your interests. In some cases it might not even be an MBA prog. For instance, if you are into Finance, MFE (masters in fin eng) might make more sense if it is inline with your interests.

So in short - is a US mba worth it? job satisfaction/guarantee wise?
Answer - yes

What specialisation?
Answer - don't worry too much about it now. After you start working, in a year or so, you'l know what corporations are like and you will be able to decide on your area of interest.

Since you are still studying check out ISBs YLP, Harvard's 2+2 and LBS' MiM programme.

One good idea would be taking your GMAT within a year after joining your job and getting the best score possible.

My first question is(and i think this doubt crops up in evry persons mind who's pursuing an Mba abroad).Is it really worth doin an mba in the US rather den in India.(i have no financial issues,its just dat der shd be enuf returns ).
Secondly,i was confused between da field to choose. mba in international buisness or mba in operations.

can som1 guide me wid the right choice of field and clear my oder doubts.and plz don say dat concentrate on ur .E. for now as i have already started preparing for GMAT.

I think it entirely depends on what you want out of your MBA and your career goals. If its only money, MBA is not the only avenue. If its global experience, a non Indian MBA just serves the purpose.

And reg the field research both and make an informed decision. I am sorry I do not have much info.
And just so you know, I have met many ppl who have changed their choice of major after first sem or so.

Go ahead and try I'd say.

Schools look at what you have done apart from work in these two years that make you stand apart from your peers. But if you want to go to the top schools take more time, but start researching and doing ground work now. Its never too early.

Anyways, apply to schools that do not encourage reapplicants only when you think you are best ready.

How many does it take to make the transcript ready?
How many days it takes to reach USA by post and whats the cost per sending Transcript to university?
If I am planning to apply for 1st deadline,when should I give my GMAT?

1. Check with your university. They are the ones who prepare transcripts.
2. I think DHL has a application package rate or something exclusive for university admission application packets. Costs 1000-2000 I think - not sure - but you can check.
3. Before Aug should be ideal IMO
4. Depends on a case basis. I do not have an avg time now.
5. There is an application portal, where you fill in ur applcation online. Everything, esssays, recos, resume is online. Check out sites for something that says 'Apply Now'
6. Not sure now
7. Not sure again

And yeah just to add, readin and scouring the school websites and the forum can give you loads of info. You just have to be a bit patient.

Is applying in the 2nd deadline decrease the chance of getting admission or scholarship.When does generally indians apply?

Well I am not really sure of the exact number though I did this a few months ago... Check out mba.com for details - you can find details there for sure.

The earlier the better. However, do not rush but apply on when you think you are ready. I applied in R2. Most ppl apply in R1 as well. Some ppl apply to most favored in R1 and backup in R2. Depends on your strategy and plan.

I dont have much idea about that, but you can shortlist colleges and research them or post in the threads specific to those colleges.

Here are my academic/professional exp details:

Class X - 92%
Class XII - 97.7%
B.E(Hons) EEE - 6.23 CGPA (of 10) from BITS-Pilani, Pilani.
Will have 4 years exp from Infosys Technologies Ltd by July 2012.

Yet to give GMAT/IELTS... planning to give in sep/oct 2011.

Please suggest me which colleges I'll be eligible to apply to in the UK for studying MBA.

You have such a good profile on the first place..:)
You can apply to most of the top 25 universities in UK by then (Next year)and get an admit easily but I would recommend you to go through the recent post work Visa regularities implemented before considering UK seriously.With so much of time left and recent changes in UK ,I would recommend top USA colleges with scholarship benefits if you can score real well in GMAT or other parts of Europe.Good Luck :)

I had a query pertaining to the I20 forms - I have an admit from a Business School and am awaiting admit decisions from a couple of other schools. The school I'm admitted to has deadlines around sending the financial docs so that they can send out the I20. Now, what if I get an I20 form from this school and get an admit from another school of my choice? Will I just get another I20 form from that school or would I have to transfer the I20 form of the current school?
