Step 3: Search Pagalguy.com posts for the universities which provide 100 % scholarships (tuition waiver and graduate assistantships) to the MBA admits. I have collected a list based on posts on Pagalguy.com, but I feel that you will learn a lot if you spend some time going through the Pagalguy.com posts which other people have provided their admission experiences and scholarship packages.

Duke is ranked higher than Yale. You can check their placement stats here.

Yale has got awesome brand name and much better placement stats than Duke. I know that during the recession from 2008-2010, many desi MBA students at Duke were desperately trying to learn C++ programming to get jobs as computer programmers because the companies were willing to sponsor H1-B for Computer Programmers. It was quite sad, but they had their $140 K debt to pay off.

Tats quite sad ya an MBA from Duke and C programming.

Btw I have a question. I have an admit from ISB. I am waiting for my final decisions from Booth/Kenan Flagler/Stern.

My Booth and KF interviews went well, however Stern was a disaster.

My post MBA goals are to work with a top tier consulting firm in strategy.

ISB is a good brand in India and will give me access to these firms. I have no doubts abt the brand value of Booth in consulting. Can any one help me , how is KF perceived in US as far as consulting is concerned. I really liked their curriculum and also since it is close to RTP and Charlotte, it gives a lot of opportunities to network. Need some help.

I will be giving GMAT in June this year. I am aiming US B-Schools.
My query is that i don have a sound financial background and most good b-schools in US are pretty expensive 100000+$ for 2 years MBA.

Because of this reason i'm planning to apply for "not so good" schools where i can get Graduate assistant-ship. I am aiming mainly for an MBA in Finance.

Is my decision for goin' in for 2-3rd grade school correct?
How about getting job?
Which colleges should i aim?

2) Yale Brand in long term
3) School on upswing with new dean , building ( which may not come until 2013 but in long term will have a great impact on schools repo)

1) The brand thing may just not work
2) The feel good factor today may not turn so good

I am confused as to which school to attend for my career goals which are listed below:

Option 1 Consulting, Strategy Focus in Healthcare with a large MC

Option 2 Leadership program in Biotech, healthcare, pharmaceutical


My reasons for choosing either schools follow:

Pros
1. Ivy League and knowledge of the school outside the U.S
2. Small class and hence more personal, with professors knowing the students and getting more 'face time' with professors and careers service.
3. I visited Cornell and it does have a charm to it which I liked.
4. Proximity to New York
Cons
1. More Finance oriented and not so much towards consulting.
2. Lower presence among 'tech companies' especially on the west coast for my 2nd career choice.
3. Not as high in the Rankings as ross.

Pros

2. Places 30% of its students in consulting (versus 16% at cornell)
3.Larger Alumni base

Both are excellent schools. You can't go wrong in this choice. If you want to stay in USA and work, there is no difference in the schools. For Finance, Cornell would be a better choice.

If you plan to return to work in Hongkong / Singapore, then Cornell Ivy brand dominates Ross.
It may be due to the recession, but according to Ross placement stats, 29% of the class of 2009 did not have jobs three months AFTER graduating. This is quite high since they only had 31% international students. I think that the placement stats which they reported are accurate, but it is very surprising. You probably need to probe a bit and find out if this may happen to you. It would be quite disastrous to have $140 K loan and go home without a job.

Out of the schools which you listed, USC (Moore) is the only school where you have a good chance to get a job in USA. If you work in USA for 3 years, you can pay off your MBA loan. If your plan is to work in India, then I would suggest that you take the school which offers the maximum scholarship so that your loan amount will be minimum. The Indian companies cannot differentiate between these schools.

IMO the schools that you should target should be a function of your goals post MBA. So probably, you should introspect on what are your goals and how an MBA would help? Based on that you should figure out which schools can lead you to your goals. And adcoms see more than yrs of we or industry. Looking at the current class profile can give you a fair idea of fitment.

I am not really well appraised of both schools but there's one point I'd like to say -

If you are a career switcher, a 2 year MBA would be more helpful because you can intern in the summer. Internship opens up opportunities for switching industries/ roles while also giving you a heads up on what to expect in your aspired role/industry. Not sure if the one yr MBA can accommodate that.

I am trying to decide on whether I should be doing a second MBA from one of these leading business schools given that it is a 1year program and it can offer me "more diverse" career options that I probably may be missing now or in future. To start of with a brief introduction of my profile

My past

Undergrad in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from RV College of Engineering, average of 75%+

MBA from Virginia Tech, USA, GPA - 3.3 (appx)

I have had 2 years of IT experience prior to my first MBA

My present

Currently I am working as a Senior Consultant for Deloitte in the Management Consulting practise in the Washington DC office. I have been with Deloitte for almost 4 years now and have had very good exposure in terms of client management experience, industry exposures and having some of the leadership experiences to speak to along with the "soft skills" which are not always apparent when one works in a typical Indian IT company.

My future - I expect that I will be promoted to a Manager in the next 1-2 years. I have given GMAT once for my first MBA and have scored 720 so I believe I can repeat my performance again in that range.

My predicament

Currently I am 31 and I want to work for 2 more years (till I become a Manager) and then join Insead/LBS/IMD/IIMA PGPX. So that puts my age at 33 when I join. I am married and I will be having my first baby daughter soon. I have applied for my green card through Deloitte and I can have a stable career progression in Deloitte.

Now lets come to the fact that if all's fine then why am I writing this post. I feel I have been able to collect sufficient international diversity and experience that will make me more marketable to employers who care about international experience and more so in a management position. I feel I have the perspective right now to choose the roles that I know would interest me having seen a diverse mix of clients/industries and having dealt with their issues on a daily basis. I think Ivy league MBA at this point of life can help me bridge the missing link between "many of the leadership oriented opportunities" that fast track one's career from such business schools (those are somewhat not much available in the present capacity that I am in). I also feel a one year MBA is going to work out given my situation (if at all I do it). I do believe that coming from a Management Consulting practice at Deloitte and potentially having executed some of the projects in the capacity of a Manager I will be better armed and also better marketable to Insead/LBS/IMD recruiters. I am more focused on the roles which can show career progression along with diversity.

I have a few mental roadblocks though that I just need some opinions on:
(a) When I propose to join I will be 33. Is that age going to be a barrier to admissions to these schools
(b) If someone can provide an honest analysis of pros and cons of all the 3 schools from my perspective then that will help me in putting a lot of things in perspective.
(c) In general which of these schools give out more financial aid.

Your GMAT score is on the lower side thus you should focus on writing it again and increase your chances of an admit. Further if you still want to apply with 620 then understand that securing admission into the top 20 Bschools will be difficult and about the Bschools you can opt for should be decided based on various other criteria such as your long/short term goals, extra-curriculars, specialization, duration of the course, your finances etc. It does not make any sense that someone just gives you names of good Bschools. In my view you must do some research on your own.

BE in Computer Sc - 73%
Extracurricular - good.
I have written technical articles and have presented papers within my organization. Doing account mngt for a small team for last 2 yrs.

My targets are NUS, Said(Oxford), Manchester, University of Texas, Austin and maybe Univ of Florida(Hough).. I am looking for Business Strategy primarily.
Can you please let me know if these colleges fit my profile to try for them(without getting rejected hopefully) or any other colleges I can try for. I have financial constraints so I will be looking for scholarship(mostly 80%) or a loan available from the college.

2. Do u see urself working in NE / mid west corridor if yes then MIS it is



it depends on your personal preference and ur affordability for the degree . NUS is MBA and relatively low cost MBA on cost where CMU is high cost masters .
In pragmatic sense , Asia is doing way better and is hottest place right now in finance, luxury, retail, etc ( SG is a major hub connecting China with SEA . with high speed rail links of china-SEA becoming reality in next 5-10 years SG and HK will rival NY and CHi town in terms on growth prospects . so NUS is a spot tobe in that sense.. Although if u have inclination to goto US and stay there , CMU is not bad place either .. but u will be not given managerial resp immediately unless ofcourse ur have vast exp already

Hey!

So this school offered you an admit even without a GMAT. Not that it is not possible, but I'd crefully checkout the Post MBA scenario before committing. Try and talk to alums or current students before you make a decision.

You should give GMAT and try applying to other schools. There are quite a good number ofgood schools out there and since you are not country specific your options are even more. MBA is once in a life time dude. Research well before taking a call. My 2 cents.

i couldn't find a thread that address MBAs universities abroad that accept you on basis of your college and schools percentages and not on entrance exams.

i have two main questions here.
-can anyone provide me with a list of good worth it universities abroad that shortlist you on basis of your college and school percentage with no entrance exams, maybe only interviews.

Nice that you have started ahead. I'd say there are two aspects: career and ec. Focus on your job and get involved in EC too like community service etc. Do something that youalways wanted to do but never took the step. But remember one thing - don't do stuff just for the sake of profile - adcoms are smart enuf to spot that either through the interviews or essays. The best way to look at it would be answering - would I do this even if I dint want to do mba any longer?

And for INSEAD... I am not rellay sure of the timelines and their impact on conversion.

As far as i know, there will not be any impact on job prospects but others I am not sure. Try posting it in any INSEAD thread out here. Someone should be able to throw more light.

Majority of the colleges dont give loans w/o co signer....and which give , gives loan only upto tuition fees.. how are we supposed to get balance money.(100000$)

can we take Global Student Loan Corporation/credilla loan too alongwith.??

only top 7 colleges provide loan w/o us co signer rest all need them...funding is really a blockade....

Totally agree on the fin part. The fees are huge and resources are less. I think you can take another loan with the loan offered by the school.

Look out for outside agencies that offer scholarships too. Ex: PRODIGY: MBA Finance - this was started by INSEAD alums. Not sure of they extend offers for other schools. But there might be other similar agencies - Keep looking. I am looking out for them too. Ll let you know if i stumble on more...

Another way to look at it would be - why not aim for the top 7 colleges which provide funding?

Majority of the colleges dont give loans w/o co signer....and which give , gives loan only upto tuition fees.. how are we supposed to get balance money.(100000$)

can we take Global Student Loan Corporation/credilla loan too alongwith.??

only top 7 colleges provide loan w/o us co signer rest all need them...funding is really a blockade....

Since I have near about 1.5 years to join the colleges and about 6 monts to start the application, so How can I work on improving my profile, currentlly I have started learning french.
What else I can do in order to make a strong profile at the time of application ?

Also Is it advisable to apply for January 2012 session of INSEAD or wait for August 2012 session ?
means in term of scholarship andjob prospects after MBA is there any difference in The Jan 2012 and Sep 2012 session ?

What my concern is that I can get a decent amount of scholarship as managing money will be an issue.

Your work ex and gmat are great. I THINK any school ranked after 10 should work out - but your profile also matters. As a matter of fact schools ranked 1 to 10 could also work. Check your fit and see if the school offers what you neeed career wise. List colleges based on your interests and then filter them out based on schols.

My 2 cents:

Check out programs in Europe. They have more 1 yr progs than US. Also the one year progs in US are very strict with respect to eligibility and requirements. One thought - if possible give GMAT another shot. It will help boost your profile a bit.

Consulting can be across various domains. Broadly there's business, technology and boutique. If you look at biz consulting there are the Big four companies and these companies recruit only from select schools. Location can be diverse since these firms have offices in most US cities. Look out at the firms you are interested in, their locations and then look at colleges in the same city and see if they visit campus. Also some schools have companies as partners or associates. Ex: Tepper has McKinsey on board. Such alliances help provide better visibility. If you are looking at tech consulting * i think * they are mostly concentrated on the west coast, but they do have offices in other cities too. Check out placement stats of companies. Also FT has rankings for best consulting schools. I remember seeing it sometime back. Check it out.


And for the funding part, i am not sure of the proceedure/formalities. Each school's finan aid office will have different ways and the policies keep changing too. Reach out to specific schools' fin office for more info.

Canadian MBAs are also good. Compared to US MBAs though, US schools are rated higher. If you plan on settling in Canada, canadian schools are great. Again there's nothing like 'best' college, there's only best fit. You can look at Richard Ivey, Queens, Rotman and Schulich. These are good schools to my knowledge.

All the colleges you have listed range from great (Harvard, Stanford etc.) to good.
Kellogg is great for team work and its proximity to Chicago is a big plus. The school culture is down to earth and enjoyable from what I know. Its more a collaborative atmosphere.

Tepper is quant focussed and they have a very flexible curriculum. You can almost choose most of your course work and design your curriculum. Not that K does not allow this. Pittsburgh is great but most companies that recruit are from NY.

All the other schools are great too. I do not have much info on them though.

Case Western and Katz!!

Tuition fee is not an issue, so other than factors like ROI, I would love to see a long thread following my queries on these schools.

Personally, I have a gut feeling that I should goto Case but I would like to see all the comments before making a final call.

Please compare the schools w.r.t the following questions:-

1) % placements for international students till date for batch passing out in 2011/2010??
2) what kind of companies come to campus for placements- I am looking for supply chain/consulting or maybe marketing profile??
3) socializing,clubbing and networking opportunities??
4) batch size??

I have visited the Emory campus. Its a good university. However from my interactions with firends there it appeared that the career management services can be better. The facutly is good. Attended a simulation class. They also have a web cast so if you are not in US you can certainly attend one using web conf. Check their website for more details about these events. If you want to go in i-banking you should probably look for schools near NY or Chicago. Atlanta's location may put you at a disadvantage as you would need to travel to NY for i-bank interviews every weekend until you get a desired position and most of the times you would shell out money from your pocket. Plus it can be tiring with all the coursework. Having said that I know students from Emory do get coveted i-bank positions.

Atlanta as a city is pretty ok. Its huge but there are certain areas you should always be away from. Mugging happens if you end up in the wrong area. Having said that its a nice school and among the top 20 schools in the US. Definitely a good bet. Try to apply in the early round.

UCLA is indeed a good college man. But one little thing - while researching don't only go by the school website. Just google the school's name, check out student blogs (there'd be some for sure) and check out if there are any featured articles on amy mags like FT or ET or BW. Check out rankings but don't treat them as 'the' mantra. Check out how many of their alums are international within 3 years or some similar statistic. This would give an idea of the feasibility of returning to India after your MBA - that is if you want to.

Emory is a good university and has waivers for Indian students and also a large part of their international students are indians. I also met with their admissions director in an event and what i learned is that around 60% of the students live in Atlanta post MBA and 30% in NA and the rest 10% worldwide. The admissions rep told me that the international students though small in number are distributed around the world. As far as I know alll major corporations in Atlanta recruit from here and Atlanta is a nice city too (from what I have read)

UK does have some great schools too. Mostly one year progs. One Boston Univ alumini once told me that schols are very limited in UK. But I think I will leave it to you to validate that.

From what I have read, Cambridge is great, loads of diversity of students and one year program. Oxford is great too. One aspirant once quoted that on visiting both schools he felt that Oxford was more traditional copmared to Cambridge. The other schools you have mentioned are good too. Just that I do not have much info on them. But what matters is will they fit in your career roadmap. And the best person to know this would be you.

And schools in Australia. I haven't really read through them or researched them, so can't really comment.

I am not sure if I have mentioned it. But give geography a thought too. For instance if you are looking at a Tech company after MBA a univ on the west coast of US would provide you more access to companies there and most tech companies are in the west coast. You might also wanna look into schools in Canada (like Rotman, Ivey, Queens, Schulich) And in europe youhave schools like IESE, IE, HEC which are top rated but are not in an English speaking country. So these schools provide you an opportunity (if you will) to learn another language.

And yeah - whatever I have written above is only to the best of my knowledge.

Well. Even I don't have a US cosigner. Twp ways to handle this is get a loan from an indian bank - this might require some one to provide surety. Another option would be to apply for schools that have loan programs for interanational students without co-signer - Emory and I think Tuck have such options. Research school websites for more info. Another option is HSBC GSLC - a loan program for indian students for education in US which requires indian scosgner - google out for more details. Other options are like Dhirubhai Ambani schol for Stanford etc. Only way to know more is google and research and read and interact.

FAFSA is for US residents only as far as I know. Do let me know if otherwise.

Most of it is online. Some schools might ask you to mail them the transcripts from your university. Otherwise I think most schools' apps can be completed online.

Adcom means - admissions committee - the school's office of admissions

I am not really sure about the diversity at UCLA. Checkout if there are any UCLA threads (there must be for sure).

MY geography prefernce : US/Europe working preference: Strategy consulting: Mckinsey/Delloite

1) Finances can be handled by scholarships and loan programs. Almost all US univs have loan programs but most require US Co-signer. Very few univs like Emory have loan programs that do not requie US co-signers.
2) Fee waiver is mostly merit based. Look out on the school websites' financial office to get more details. Varies from school to school
3) If you are looking for a career shift 2 yr i best cos it has an opportunity to intern which is very essential for switchers. If you only want a career enhancement go for one year.
4) Contact adcoms with a few questions and ask them if they can put you in touch with current students. Check out PG forums for current student threads
5) You can ask students about how they handled essays. But your essays should be written from scratch by you bcos the language, words, tone are all indicative of the person you are. You can get essay samples over the net - go through them but don't read too much into them
6) V important atleast from what I know of US schools. Best would be your current and previsou supervisor.

Europe has more 1 yr programs and US has more 2 yr programs. Check out the schools for foot print in consulting. One GREAT school for consulting is INSEAD.

I am sushil bansal currently pursuing MBA from Manchester Business School. I will suggest that Choice of college depends upon your aspirations and career field.

However also take into account several other things like reputation of a college, career management services and access to alumni.

I will suggest do not go by rankings of a college. Be clear about what you want to do after MBA and then list down all colleges which are good at it.

Very Important: do not feel yourself down after any rejection. Work on your application. Even if you have low GMAT score, prepare your application well. Good luck guys.
