I am a mechanical engineer from Pune University who chucked his job in Mahindra Automotive to start my own Adventure Tourism Company ( i can see you wondering why i havent put up a 'i am with stupid' emot ). So i'll be completely one year of working this august.

I have decent acads, with a GPA higher than 3.5. My extra-curriculars are very good, I worked for a NGO for 3 years during engg, i am a freelance writer and photographer with articles published in The Hindu.

Enough of blowing my own trumpet.

I want to apply for foreign b-schools for their fall 2007 intake ( which means i barely scrape in, mostly not, through the 2 years work-ex thing ). my budget is a maximum of 25 lakhs. which b-schools should i aim for ? as in what ranked b-schools would i have a chance of getting into with my low work-ex ?

i'll be giving the GMAT in september. i know thats late, but i cant help that.

My current list : ISB, NUS, HK UST. how good is the last one ?

i know i am a bit late, but i'd really appreciate any help.

ISB is NOT a foreign b-school, but will easily fit your budget and is by far the best of the three in terms of job placement opportunity. Secondly, you're stil young, have a go at the CAT, and try getting into an IIM.

First, ask the US school which you are considering for the MBA degree whether they would accept a 3 year B.Com from India, tell them all the courses you undertook. As an alternative, u could possibly look at a British School with a one year MBA - Cambridge, Oxford, Warwick, Strathclyde and Cranfield (the last two mentioned are big on HR & Leadership Strategy). An MBA from any one of these schools, part of list of 50 global schools, makes you eligible an automatic work permit under the UK Government's HSMP Program, you don't need any employer to sponsor you. After a year's work, you can have the work-visa extended to a further 4 years. If you study in Strathclyde, you become eligible for a 2 year work visa, but only for Scotland. Once you'ce checked and eliminated all of these schools, you should go for the M.Com option with Mumbai University.

u forget Canada too ! they have 4 great schools - Ivey,Rotman,Queens and now York...getting a Canadian equivalent of a US green card is pretty fast and easy, and Toronto is the 3rd biggest financial hub of North America.

Fully agree. Ivey has recently changed over into a 1 year program (with two entry points in a given year). Canada also allows international MBA's to work for 2 years post the MBA (an automatic work permit NOT connected to a job offer), after which the graduate easily qualifies for permanent Canadian Residency.

Well, u asked a very very generic question. So i will advise u to just serach GMAT threads on PG where u will get a plenty of knowledge on GMAT. Also u can access www.mba.com which is the official website for registering and all for GMAT and there u will also find some sample papers. so please do some googling as of now.
This thread is only meant for Phoren B School Assistance, there are other threads on GMAT in the GMAT forums. Also do some search on your behalf before putting on further queries, i hope people will then take u seriously here.

P.S. - your mail has so many SC errors yaar ..lol...my weakest link in GMAT...

Since you want advice from someone who's been there and done that :-), here you go. You will be absolutely fine if you target and swing an admit to one of the top 3-5 schools in any region. If an employer likes what you bring to the table and the potential results you could offer, they WILL sponsor your work visa - as was the case with me and EVERY one of the Indians in my class. Indians in the Top schools (my list below) generally do well, unless they're seriously personality deficient! Relax - unless the economy tanks, odds are good.
The US Top 10, EU Top 3 and Asia-Pac Top 5 (IIM-A/B/C, AGSM, Melbourne, Ceibs China) will get you good opportunities in their regions. US Top 10 & Eu Top 3 will bring opportunities anywhere.
So quit wasting time with queries like yours, decide what you want to do an MBA for and what you want to do after an MBA, and just go for it.... If you still want to go the above route, you will be fed with enough bad news to potentially discourage you.....

FT rankings is the most widely used rankings outside of US (and within US too)..there is nothing wrong with the facts u have mentioned below..you and Simba are missing a plain easy thing - the FT rankings are global whereas the BW and USN rank US b-schools only..mind you, BW ranks schools outside US in a separate set...

so based on this, if you scroll down the FT rankings, u will see that Duke ranks #15 among US b-schools but #27 globally - nothing wrong with that? Similary, Cornell ranks #19 in US but #36 globally..this matches the new USN rankings which has Cornell as #16

each ranking has their own faults - BW ranks Queens as #1 outside US, which everyone knows is kinda weird..Queens over LBS/Insead? shouldn't be that way especially when it ranks in the 80's in the FT Rankings which is also weird !

all said, US school rankings is not equal to global school rankings!

I am a final year mech. engg student in IIT. Will be applying after about 2.5-3 years work-ex.

I wanna know how one should go about researching b-schools. I was looking at some rankings and there are so many discrepancies between different rankings. For eg. according to FT, Cornell is ranked at 36 but according to BW, it is ranked at 7. Similarly, Fuqua@Duke (Simba plz note!) is ranked at 27 according to FT but 11 according to BW. So how can we make sense of these rankings? Which is the best and most reliable ranking?

To my knowledge, there is NO school offering an IB specialized MBA. The Finance Elective Group / Specialization in a Top B-School is adequate preparation for a career in Corporate Finance (IB included). Your commitment to pursue IB is admirable, but you should aim high and try executing the commitment through one of the very top schools. If you articulate your need to do an MBA well enough through your application and essays, you'll get interviewed by the school whether/not you have international experience. If you interview well and convince the adcomm of your potential to succeed, you be admitted.

.....I just wanted to collate all that and provide a good idea of these factors in each country!

Now its my turn to choose between NUS and Cranfield.

I'm confused between the highly ranked academic experience at Cranfield and little better brand name of NUS (in India). I don't want either cost / duration of the programs to influence my decision. Little about me: I'm currently working as a Project Mgr in IT and look to advance in IT post MBA. I also plan to return India within 2 yrs.

For the Reply. I wanted a reply to this question as few people had given me answers like you would need atleast 770-780 to get into top 10.
This they said was due to very geneic profile.
I had browsed through some sites and was looking at the profile and range of GMAT scores hence i felt they were not coinciding with what i had heard.
I had to get more info regarding the same, hence i had posted that generic question.

It can be accurately given only by someone who has already been there or seen it. What use is your experience if one cant share it with someone else?

I have already browsed through quite a lot of B-school websites & also some other info sites, but could not get a clear answer to these 3 things which are the most important factors to one who is planning their career in any of these countries!! All these sites mention about their courses and their fees.. and give links to their financial aid department. This applies to ALL the students who apply there.. But we need to know it from our seniors how it was for people like them.. like us! We learn from the deeds and mistakes of others. I thought this forum is for sharing and helping each other.

As someone here mentioned, there are lot of Indian students in IESE. But how do I know if they are not sons of tycoons?? Exactly!! How do I know?? I need to know from someone who is there to tell me how it works for an ordinary student who needs scholarships and good jobs.. These tycoons will neither apply for schol nor wud they need a job. So how will I know from IESE's website if they are suitable for Indian students?
My query is related to the country and school on how it fits for students like us & NOT which university has the maximum Indian students. It is a more generic and practical issue related query.

Pls note, I am NOT asking here which B-school will fit MY profile or which B-school is good for my kind of experience. All THESE things are what will show in my essays - if I have not researched on these or just taken opinions blindly from someone else.
What I am asking people here is that - whoever has done research , atleast show some direction in more practical issues related to the apping process & beyond that! (which are not available in an organized manner anywhere)

For example: I read in Businessweek that getting jobs in Australia is easy. In PG, I saw many threads which mentioned that some people have been forced to return to India because the Australian work permit laws are pretty strict. I need to know what is the real picture in Australia and what are the things one can do to avoid trouble. Do I get it from AGSM's website? Now tell me, who will clear this confusion?? If we people look on PG as the place where we share knowledge & help each other, why should I get a reply here saying do the research urself? I dont need to join this forum for this.

If a list comes out then your lack of research will SHOW in the application. You need to know a school as much as you can before striking it off or applying there. Ofcourse there are at least 50% people who have absolutely know clue why and where they are applying. But, then use your own judgement.
If i say, you have the most indians in IESE barcelona. Wat will you do? go there.
What if all the indians out there are sons/daughters of business tycoons and you a IT nerd? Where will you end up?
It is a unique experience, feel it!

Scholarships: Good chances, Partial schol, abt 25% chances, Very very less

Getting a job: within a month, within 3 months, within 6 months, Pack ur bags and return as a bankrupt desi

Firstly man...u heard Kunal....go get ur hands dirty. I know if this list is provided how helpful it can be....but I also feel the amount of info and perspective u will gain, by trying to compile this list on your own...will be invaluable.

These threads are gud because we can share info and experience, but I think visiting a few b-school websites will do u as much good as any of these forums. You will get a feel of wht you are out to pursue.

I would be really grateful if someone can put this for the following countries:

UK
France
Spain
Canada
Australia
US
Italy (?)
and any other destinations that is a hotspot for Indian students.

And regd the schools, pls put in atleast 2-3 top B-schools in each of these countries except the US.. for which if smone can put atleast 5 top-schools, it wud be great

I am requesting for this info because this would be really useful for anyone like me confused about which B-schools to apply to!

Need some advice.
I am currently doing my MBA from IIM, and i have a 3 yr IT experience (Comp Engg from Pune university). Except for IIM part, my acads are not all that great.
I am planning on doing a dual MBA (second one from one of the top 5 colleges of US). I have a very valid reason for the same too as i want to go into Forex and the contacts from a US B-school wil be very good in my later life in this field & IIMs even 2day do not have the a good enough Forex placement.
Assuming i get a score in proximity of 750 ( i have a decent Extracaricullar background, from sports to other college activities).. i want to know
1) How mch sense does it make to go for 2nd MBA directly after my first one? and if not MBA then wht other options (if you know).
2) if there is a chance for me get thru in the top B-Schools of US (likes of Harvard).

no offence meant but such general all embracing statements might turn the guy off or lead him the wrong way.

Abhishek i wud reallly suggest that you look around before seeking advice right away. it may be the easier way but then it is always second hand information.
ask the right questions : where can i find reading stuff on GMAT, where can i get some profiles, where can i get better resources for prep etc.

I agree with you.... but what he asked was a general marks band which is a sort of bare minimum.... as ISB avg mark is 680 ... I did'not see anything exceptional in his acad profile that is why I said aim for a high score such as 750..... In any case a high score would not hurt his chances.....:neutral:

I told him because I screwd up GMAT first time :(.... I wanted to apply to
great lakes... but I had no idea as to what kind of score is required..... and finally i hardly prepared as I had no target in mind and ended up with a score of 590.:(.. I dont want others to make a similar mistake of not haivng a score in mind.... Moreover I think its utopian to think that anybody with a score less then what is said can make it (unless he has a good OVERALL profile)..... In any case its better to have a Sexy GMAT Score (which will definately improve one part of application Package.... Acad's & work ex anyways you cannot change .... only thing in your hand is Essay, SOP & GMAT and ofcourse the Interview, so why to take the risk if the work ex and acad record is not exceptional)....

So Abhishek what Kunal is saying is right .. start preparing for gmat but what I told you made sense to me and that is why I shared with you (i.e considering the work ex profile & Acads to have a min GMAT Score in region of 670-680, if you are aiming for top 20 b-schools )....

Finally let me repeat the DISCLAIMER :- I told earlier also that I am no gyaani on this issue ... what I told you is from the research I have done on the web and this is totally my personal opinion ... You asked for my opinion so I told you what I felt & what I am Aiming. Finally its you who have to take the call.... I would definately advise you to speak to ISB alumni as I did... the details are there on the web....

I have one basic query...

When targetting top10 B Schools in US, wat is the contribution of my GMAT score? Suppose I get score in the range of 750-770 (which I wud within a fortnight and have a good academic background, and 2 yrs of workex... although the company is not so visible even in india...

so can my gmat score compensate for all this?

Dude I am no Gyaani on this issue .... but for the resarch I have been doing for past 2 months tells me that you need a minimum of 670-680 score there are exception's to this but they have a sexy work profile and ages of work ex with them ( 5 years Atleast).... It seems that you have only 1.5 yrs which is below avg work ex for top b schools..... If I had been in your place I would be gunning for 730-740.....


Anyways Urmad, pg & Simba are more informed than me ...so if they have other opinion pay no heed to this msg..... I am giving u my opnion out of my research....

And yea, it just ain't the profile alone, its more of what *you* have gained and achieved in playing such varied roles at varied organizations :)

IMD says that 90% are international. Go into the details and you will see 75% are from European union itself.

The numbers and pedigree does matter, but what you have accomplished matters more. So if you have a story that you think will show you in the best light, go ahead. The worst thing that can happen is you getting rejected and thats not really the worst thing in life :)

So if you want something that bad, you better have the goods to back it up with. I can assure you that acads dont really matter that much and this comes from a guy with a second class in m.com heading to wharton. So keep your chin up, kick some A$$ in your career and you should be fine when it comes to applying. Shortlisting at the top schools are NOT always a function of your acads. Its a part of the process and your acads, your stories and your achievements will play a part in you being shortlisted.

Thanks for clearing little bit of muck around my views on getting admission in a good B-schools.....

But as for as kicking A$$ in job I am not sure if my job profile is that much fundoo although i have near about 5 years of work exp.... only good thing about my work profile is that I have worked in various functions of Financial Service Industry but for short durations from 1 to 1.6 years in Corporate Law & accounting to Retail & relationship Banking to Merchant Banking....... How to pitch this kind of jumps in a postive way is my problem !!!! and Sugesstions ??? :::I am involved in Community Service & have a reasonable record in Co-curriculars....

Well, I got what you are trying to say but dont you think that the ppl on the PG forum will have atleast some Idea about these B-Schools ( Since I have no Idea, I would be better of in knowing what say and then try to find their validity rather than being totally ignorant ..as they say...

As I know of IIT's with good acad's and work ex not even being called for work PI... where do I stand a chance infront of them .......

Hey azeem....

Pple from IIT being rejected at ISB is a part of their attempt to bring a little diversity in the group. (last year 78% of students at IIMC were engineers).

So if u see from that standpoint I think u have, if anything, a huge advantage. Other than that if u really wanna compare, you should look at people with backgrounds similar to you...(tho I seriosly think such comparisons dont make sense).

You have an excellent profile, and i'm sure any B-School would love to have u on board.

I am a commerce gradate with not so great acads(10th:85% 12:70% and bcom:63%) have work ex of 16 months in a reinsurance firm and also pursuing masters in business law from national law school(part-time) i would like to study full-time mba in US (finance-strategic consulting). planning to take up GMAT in early 2007 . I would like to start the course latest by 2008 what are the chances for commerce graduates in good US b-schools?because many schools take students who have 16 yrs of formal education and i thought there is some kind of inclination towards engineers. is it so?
does my masters in business law degree comes to any help in admission procedure and also scholarships considering I score decently in GMAT(700+)

well the rule of thumb is to study where you want to work. If you like working in Europe and see opportunities as an MBA there then you can evaluate this further. I would not choose primarily on the duration and cost.
