The choice will really boil down to your personal goals and wht you wish to achieve from the course.

I wil try to list down points where Nanyang scores above XLRI and vice-versa

- NBS is truly global and diverse school, in terms of student body, faculty and alumini. The global outlook and diversity (pls read cultural and business perspective from diff parts of the world) will be a miss from XLRI point of view. You will find all Indians there.

- Scope of XLRI is limited to India whereas NBS has a reach in the entire APAC region. It's just that NBS marketing and addmission dept is not at par with world's top-notch school and thus we think tht it has not got any reach in India. Talk to few alumns and you would realize that NBS stands at par with XLRI-GMP in terms of recognition in India. Definitely schools like ISB, IIMA, C scores much above NBS in India but when it come to APAC region NBS has more reach (no doubt). My brother did his course from ISB this year (class of 2008 ) and he indeed told me that Nanyang was well known among all the faculties and student body out there. So people do know abt NBS.

NBS administration too knows abt its probs and they are doing their own bid to address these issues. It's CSO (Career Service office) has improved leaps and bounds in past few years and it is set to improve further (this was told to me by the interviewer in response to one of my Qs). They have a new dean from Wharton (Mr Jitendra Singh) whose apsire to bring school in Top-25 (which means afew more changes for better). They plan to conduct world MBA tour for next session so that the school gets more exposure. So there are probs which are getting addressed which is a good sign and soon we may see a school which is visible to a broader base outside APAC.

- If you are gang-ho to be in India immediately after MBA then XLRI-GMP may give you better options (I agree with DSP1 on placements) in short term. If persuing an MBA @ NBS is only because one has not been able to crack some coveted bschools in India and thus looking for cheaper and nearer (in terms of location) options in Asia than I will advice you to stick to XLRI. However, if you are looking for a global exp and wish to spend some years of your life in SNG than go for NBS (which shld not be a bad bet given the quality of life in SNG and the recog of NBS in SNG and APAC in general). In any case NBS is bound to give you better results in long term.

These are all my personal opinions (data gathered after my own research) and are not intended to influence your decision. The final decision lies on the individual and one shld decide based on his/her comfort level with the course.

I received an admit e-mail from NBS on April 21st and I am waiting for admissions kit since then. How much time should I wait before writing/calling to them.

I also applied to NUS on March 07 and have not heard anything from them. Does it take so long for them to confirm the status. Let me know your thoughts on this.

AIM was supposed to be good in 1990s - it was the only good institute around in Asia then and hence has a good history... however, the quality of students as well as institute has gone down considerably since start of the millenium (heard it from ppl - all 2nd hand info)... also after the Asian crisis, the region (South East Asia) itself suffered a setback which is now recovering after a gap of decade...

Singapore was always an international finance center and hence schools like NUS and Nanyang are better off than AIM (from placement point of view)... Singapore acts as regional south east asia hub for most companies and hence better off than phillippines.... Also in Singapore you shall not face language problems as you might face in philippines...

personally i feel, Nanyang shld be better than AIM but then I havent done much research on AIM so mine could be biased view...

My 2 cents.
I had a discussion with one of the (Wharton passout) senior in my organization(among top4 financial services org) based in Singapore who commented that both NTU & NUS are among the best in APAC region.They would be helpful in APAC region due to their visibility.
Was however not too sure of the leverage that any other school from India(read IIM) might be able to render in regions outside India.

the funniest part is that i could not find placment stats for Nanyang anywhere... however if it is equivalent to NUS, placement would be in range of S$70k (1S$ = ~INR29)... although you pay only 5% tax there, the rentals are quite high...

coming to job in India - i cant really comment.. however, couple of seniors from NUS would be doing their summers in India... NUS is relatively more known in India than Nanyang for simple reason that around 30% of batch size in NUS are Indians... so thats the reason NUS is known in India and recognised as par wid IIMs... cant say the same thing abt Nanyang... however, if u wish to stay in Singapore, both NUS and Nanyang are equally good....

I would not like to comment on IIM-L v/s Nanyang since they are two very diff schools... you cannot compare apples to oranges... both are decently strong brands in their respective countries...

m not too clear either by what he meant but i think it might be the histor of both the instituitions.... in any cases, he also mentioned both are at par! so doesnt matter much....

Hey Abhishek,

Congrats for getting into IIML and NTU. Placement will defintitely be better in IIML and moreover I can say IIM is IIM.

Comparing NTU and IIML might be difficult. It all depends on whats your aim and where you want to land after few years. IIM really has a big brand value in india and unfortunately NTU doesnt have in India. But NTU gives you an International exposure which might help you in long term. And I think NTU might be a big more expensive than IIML.

I can say if you are planning to build a carrer in India, then better choose IIML.

I really dont see any big difference bet NTU and NUS. I think Puneet has already compared the pros and cons of both the schools. It just that NTU costs you some 11K singapore dollar less.

But I will say if you have already accepted NUS, then you may decide to go there. I got the soft copy from NTU on my request. they want 1K by May 14 and tuition fee will be taken in 4 installments (details were not written in the softcopy). The 1st installment will be taken in registration time on July 22.

I think NUS would hold an edge over Nanyang. ( I got a reject from NUS after waitlist & admit from NTU)

NUS seems more vibrant & also has a lot of indians. This encourages a lot of indian companies to visit NUS & maybe give a miss to Nanyang. Although, this year nanyang placements have been equally good or maybe even better as compared to NUS, I still feel that NUS seems to be moving in the rite direction at a faster pace.

Things like Cerebration & the Warren Buffett meet along with impresive exchange programs makes NUS look more happening.

Nanyang ofcourse is less expensive, highly ranked & has lesser indians & more europeans. If u r planning to stay in singapore for a while then i think both the colleges would be quite similarly placed whn it comes to placements.

So far, after speaking to students from both colleges, the faculty & the infrastructure of both the colleges seems very impressive.

So, I wld say tht if u want to come back to India, then NUS certainly has a better brand name. In singapore, i feel, NTU is similar to NUS in every respect. (NUS has a slightly modern infrastructure i believe & i feel NBS has better diversityof students).

I agree that so far the trend has been that ppl with high GMAT are getting calls. But y dint u give ur GMAT a second time. I m sure a week of prep & you would have done better a second time. (Since you know wat to expect)

GMAT is 1 of the criterias, thats agreed but just like me even u dont have high work exp, so somewhere v need to excel. Also, if ur acads r excellent, then a low GMAT mite not hamper ur chances. Plus, if ur work experience is something different, tht mite help. These ppl like to have a diversified class.

I have no idea how long will they take to revert back. I cant even judge that with your application number as none of us know if there is a particular method of giving calls. But be prepared at all times as you may get a call anytime without any prior intimation. All the best for the same.

I am also quite sure of taking it. I have a bit of insider information as i have been speaking to a few current students at NTU. Regarding the 4th Trimester, the dates will be the same as the 1st Trimester. We will be ending our course by the end of October. The 8 weeks recess is the time when we are supposed to do internships. We can even extend this time to mid august. We will have to manage our studies along with internships if we plan to extend them.

Also, in the last trimester you can even go for an exchange program, although it dosent seem too viable as that would be the most important time to do your networking to find the best possible job. This is wat i feel. If you are lucky enuf to find a job before that then i thing an exchange prog wld be brilliant. (People do get placed well in advance).

1) I dont think you have to choose your specialization at this stage. You can choose to do a specialization or take up a general MBA at a much later stage after the completion of the basic courses. By doing four courses in a particular field you specialize in that field. I have been told by a current student that a specialization does assist while getting a job in that sector (eg - finance specialization will help in finding a finance based job), Although again no guarantee that you will get a job only because u have done ur specialization. I would suggest dont bother abt it rite now.

While filling the form even if u do select specialization, you can always change it . This is wat i feel. Nowhere is it given in my admit e-mail that i have been selected for Nanyang MBA with a specialization in finance( i had selected specialization in finance while filing the form)

2) Nanyang generally calls on the cell phone directly without any prior intimation. The calls could be even as late as 11.30 in the nite.

I have been told by a current student that a specialization does assist while getting a job in that sector (eg - finance specialization will help in finding a finance based job), Although again no guarantee that you will get a job only because u have done ur specialization. I would suggest dont bother abt it rite now.

While filling the form even if u do select specialization, you can always change it . This is wat i feel. Nowhere is it given in my admit e-mail that i have been selected for Nanyang MBA with a specialization in finance( i had selected specialization in finance while filing the form)

2) Nanyang generally calls on the cell phone directly without any prior intimation. The calls could be even as late as 11.30 in the nite.

1)is the general mba option better than selecting the specialisation mba option?it is mentioned that in the general mba one can select his or her specialisation as and when he wants.which is beter recommended by you all?


2)for the telephonic interview conducted by nanyang, do they call u on your home phone number , office phone number or on your mobile number which has been provided to them in the application form?

Just wanted to check if anyone of you have received the admission offer letter. I guess some of you had received admits(via email) a good 3-4 weeks back, and wanted to check out how long does it take for Nanyang to start sending out the letters?

I guess they are trying to filter the profiles before interview itself and I hop most of the candidates who have been interviewed will get an admit :-)

No doubt its a really good school. I know most of us (inclusing me) are a bit concerned over the placement. But I must say out side India no where any B'School has a concept of placamen week inclusding US and Europe. But I also feel putting a little bit effort it wont be difficult to find a decent job after NTU. We may not get "the" job we want, but finding "a" job should not be a daunting task.

Moreover ROI is really good in NTU. Its ranking is 46 and cost wise with all the expensiture it will be 14-15 lacs which is really cheap in we compare US and Europe B'Schools. With a mounting US recession I persoannly dont see any reason to do a MBA in US or Europe. I always feel future lies in Asia and India and thats the reason I personally decided to do my MBA in Asis.

If I would compare ISB or IIMs with NTU then I must say they are better and even I wont think of NTU infront of them. They certainly have a big advantage of huge plcamanent. But if I were ask to compare NTU with any other B'Schools in India and most of the schools in Asis (inclusing SP Jain Dubai and AIM), I will certainly prefer NTU because of its location, brand value, ROI , diversity, and level of education. Return may not great for 2-3 years after MBA but down the line 5-10 years it will really pay off and moreover it depends where we are seeing ourself ater 5-10 years. I will certainly like to say myself that I have done my MBA from a top 50 B'Schools in world.

Wud ya know of anyone who has been this unlucky?
I think overall a person wud "learn" much more due to the peer profile and the international exposure
Also I would kinda feel outta place @ IIMs for some reason
the motto seems to be "work hard no fun"..cant quite do it
Am somehow rasonably sure of doing well at NTU and sure of not doin well at IIM..
Really look fwd to the fantastic exposure
And as u said..at the moment US MBA is not very attractive , especially for osmeone with 2 years work ex(like me)

Got an interview call yesterday night...as ppl have mentioned on this forum, more of a casual conversation really. Pretty much similar questions as elaborated by jshah29...the interviewer was pretty keen on gauging whether I wud tk up Nanyang if offered...so a lot of emphasis on why Nanyang vis-a-vis my other options ( hv few admits)..and also focussed on the internship scope in S'pore with my current employer...plus sum general questions regd family profile and future aspirations...

All the best to all...has anyone decided on Nanyang yet ? If so kindly share how Nanyang compares relative to other premier b-schools...

yep started when I was 20.5 and turned 21 at workplace... my elder colleagues used to tease me (some still do) that i m a kid... avg age here in my dept hovers around to 24...
