abhi dekha mail.... its nice.. but itni jaldi agar fir se chutti liye (just had 6 weeks of holiday in singapore in dec-jan) to manager haath main katora pakada dega. Waise bhi I have Work From Home option-WFH (IT industry, it has some perks ), but in Himalayas main toh no network, so no chance as of now bhai.

On the other hand a lot of other activities can be done making the best use of WFH option.

If yes, you can very well move to some bank like Goldman Sachs , SocGen who do IB. Although you will not do IB directly (that you want to post-MBA) , you might work in applications releavnt to IB. With that and CFA, you have functional knowledge of IB and exposure to IB technology. This should augur well for your future goal of involvement of IB and mission of openning an IB.

Yaar.. IT se IB mein switch hota nahi.. aur jabse I have told my mangaer that I am not doing MBA this year, he has literally had his pangs out.. Giving me all kindof assignments/projects/US trips..

I think i will have to scrap this switch to FInance part from my app. If it hurts my app,so be it. I was honest last time, but wasn't of much use. Lets be a bit dishonest and see.

I had a couple of friends who worked in Mckinsey first and then moved to some PEs later on. Further they went to pursue their MBAs. In your case its "IT" to link thoda mushkil hai. I think you can use that experience to show client handling and CFA and other stuff (if any) to show yor finance interest.

what i came to know is that IBs(Investment banks) do not come to ISB to recruit anyways.. For IB,its INSEAD.. ISB is mostly about Consulting. So, my thinking is if ISB's USP is Consulting, y not stick to tht in my app.

I can sell IT consulting to them because I have been doing that for the past year or so.. and I have done nothing that is even miles close to what an IB firm does.. What I wrote in my app was a fairytale story I guess.

Just for the record, my long term goal is still opening an IB but was not able to sell it properly and my qualifications (IIM) do not help either.

yaar, if u think ur fairytale story did not stick, then dun try to stick it. As far as i can think, there is no harm in this. If the adcom asks you - "you were trying to paint ur fairytale story all over me last time, what happened this time" - you can tell them that you would want to move to finance first.

Also to make ur case more strong, I would advise you to connect with people in that background. You have 6 months in your hand. Even if you cant make a switch or have something substantial related to IB on ur profile, you can always tell them that you connected with people for 6 months and you got to know a lot of things from them. That way atleast the adcom would know that for 6 months you did try to better your profile.

GMAT format might change in June 2012. The AWA part will change and wont have any effect on overall score although.
The AWA part will include some data analysis question intead od Analysis of an Issue I think!

To avoid confusion , you might want ot take GMAT b4 dat..

You are write dude.. there will be a Data Anlaysis section with separate score.. All plans to take GMAT before June.

Definitely glad to have embarked on this race. Earned me an admit (albeit deferred, but a valuable one) and some great friends here. Have a lot of thinking to do on this admit as of now, as WhiteWNNoise mentioned. Reserving the seat before venturing into other interviews might be a sensible thing to do. Not sure yet...

And I though only guys have heart attacks.!!

Keep the ISB admit with you as a life insurance policy with 2L premium. You are getting to enjoy a full year I guess. Would kill for that. I would get an Enfield,go to Ladakh and teach the kids maths and physics for an year.. maybe a few will go into IIT.. thats me n my devilish brain.

This is my first post and please count me in for 2014 thread. I would like to ask fellow puys in Delhi, or whoever may help to suggest me the best coaching classes for GMAT. I'm planning to give my first shot around July-August 2012. Mustang, if you may recommend me a good institute?

thanks, but wish it was a clinching factor.. I know of atleast another puy (Rasputin) who got a ding with a 770 score.. And there have been cases where a guy with a 780 score was not called for interview as his essays were shoddy ..

As per adcom, GMAT score is considered as a part of your academics.. So if you have any two good results among 12th, graduation and GMAT, your academics would be considered good.. And academics as such doesn't score more than 20% of the overall profile..

To quickly add to your point - once you score above a minimum, it really does not matter how high your GMAT score was. A super high score will only produce marginal gains as you correctly pointed out (since acads have a limited weightage).

What will swing things your way is how much time you devote to the application and the essays - honestly speaking I took a good 3-4 months to prepare my essays and a lot of my batchmates reported similar times. I have yet to meet anyone who says "Yeah, I wrote them over a quick breakfast and they were good enough".

This is what you call part time??? Even a full time volunteer will not do this much. If this is what you have done, you should include it in your application. In reality no one in the adcom asks you about the certificates and all during the interviews. They just check your confidence, honesty, commitment towards the society and more than any other thing "the level of leadership skills in you". If you can show them the last thing (what they love to call Extra Curricular) they will be happy and flexible enough to include you in the final list even without the certificates.

Substantial in the sense that it was not part time.But yes I have continually devoted 6 Hrs on weekends to educate and help people with free education/experimental classes/innovative sciences,life at still and work sessions,reading sessions for kids who are blind and impaired and also helping with some school staff to provide and arrange mid-day meals and sort of many similar activities.This has been part of my voluntarily activity and I don't owe any certificate of appreciation or any participation proof.However, I have been assisting and adding value to the society in the best way I can and that was all too during my leisure time.
So what do you suggest will that be of any relevance to show as part of experience.

I am finally going to tell you all why I so badly wanted an admit this year. My MBA aspirations started in 2010 when I only wanted to be in IIM-B. Awestruck till date at their placement scenarios and study culture. Had applied last year, and got a ding. Bad move as it was the only school I had applied to. Been wanting to move back to India for some time now. Expanded my horizon and MBA from the Indian tier-1 colleges (IIM-A/B/C, ISB) seemed to fit in nicely with my scheme of things.

Then came the twist. A guy passed by and I fell for him (autumn leaves started floating around and SRK's guitar tune kept playing in the background) To make things worse, he got an admit in R1, ISB Hyd co2013. The only way to end the India-SG distance was for me to get into ISB - same campus, same batch. Went all out for it (not losing focus for IIM applications too - got a ding from A without interview, have calls from B and C). Did everything possible under the sun to get an admit in ISB. Didn't work (4 months less workex fell heavy on my efforts :-()

And my worst fears came true. We fell apart just 2 hours after I received the ISB email (explains why i went MIA from the co2013 thread? ). Really sad but GLAD to be out of a relationship that has its fate resting on distance and B-school admit terms. Had got my life stuck at a point from where I couldn't see anything beyond ISB and him. SO VERY GLAD to move on right now.

That was my story (of course, kept far away from the adcom's reach ). Mustang28 and another puy, who shared their stories in the previous thread, made me smile in silence. You guys are not alone! Wanted to share this for a long time now, but was waiting for the results

ok i have a qsn here. when u get a deferred admit do u still need to pay that 2 lakhs this year itself to reserve ur seat or u can pay that 2 lakhs next year?

Yes, she would still have to pay the money to confirm the seat. And for her (deferred admit) it wont be 2 lacs, it wud be 3 lacs, correct me if I am wrong.

thanks, but wish it was a clinching factor.. I know of atleast another puy (Rasputin) who got a ding with a 770 score.. And there have been cases where a guy with a 780 score was not called for interview as his essays were shoddy ..

As per adcom, GMAT score is considered as a part of your academics.. So if you have any two good results among 12th, graduation and GMAT, your academics would be considered good.. And academics as such doesn't score more than 20% of the overall profile..

Rewards and Recog at work - Most Valuable Player Award,Roll of Honor Award,Vote of Thanks award,Extra Miler Award,Promoted to lead a team of three.
Community Service - Unit Anchor of SPARSH initiative and volunteer in many drives like T-shirt sell,Adopt a child etc.

Planning to give GMAT on 7th April.Fingers crossed.
Am from Pune so would love to meet fellow puys from here.

Substantial in the sense that it was not part time.But yes I have continually devoted 6 Hrs on weekends to educate and help people with free education/experimental classes/innovative sciences,life at still and work sessions,reading sessions for kids who are blind and impaired and also helping with some school staff to provide and arrange mid-day meals and sort of many similar activities.This has been part of my voluntarily activity and I don't owe any certificate of appreciation or any participation proof.However, I have been assisting and adding value to the society in the best way I can and that was all too during my leisure time.
So what do you suggest will that be of any relevance to show as part of experience.

Before delving into high ends of GMAT and its colleges.I need your help puys to evaluate my profile and help me to be decisive for colleges.

For March'13 Intake I'll have work experience of 3.5 Yrs in IT/ITES.
Role as Business System Analyst in two of leading MNC's in India.
Graduation-B Tech(ECE)- 75% Hons.
HSC-ICSE-77%
SSC-ICSE-76.60%
Extra Curricular: National Level Technical Paper presentation Award by AICTE.
National Debate and Elocution Winner and various college level award.
Part Time Work Experience with few NGO's.

Help me evaluate my profile and my candidature for getting a fair chances at ISB.
Also what would be sufficient range of GMAT score which can bag an ISB call for me..Please help!

EC's : Was a part of Fianance Commitee for cultural fest in engg college
was part of a social initiative for teaching.

My long term goal wld to make carrer in finance(dats why switch to sbi and cfa )

Would be appearing for GMAT post CFA l2.

And I was so surprised at your result.. I mean honestly, I haven't seen a better EC part in any other profile.. And your interview was 75 mins long, who would waste that much time to reject a candidature.. insane..

Good to know that you got thru great lakes.. My MBA colleges gyaan is very bad, so pardon me when I ask whether this is in Chennai? May you take the best decision regarding taking the offer or not..

Frankly, I was not very sad about my result.. Of course it felt bad that the 3 months' effort that I had put went almost waste and I will be losing a year if I have to do a management course finally.. I actually read the reject line on the website 4-5 times before it sank in.. But I was also uncertain over last few weeks about financing the course.. Mostly my wife would have come with me leaving her job, so all put together it would have been a 50L game.. So after knowing the results, I was a bit relieved from that angle and joking around that I have so many options opened up now with this money and let me blow away some part of it first .. In a way it was good not to get the admit, I will take care of my finances this year as I am in no haste now, will think thru why MBA and come out stronger next year (if at all I am pursuing it, family obligations might let me not pursue as well)..

Again, wish everybody found something good from the exercise and became stronger..

A first attempt CA, CWA and CMA .. 8 yrs of exp in Investment banking, M&A; and PE. worked on multi billion dollar deals... currently in a leadership role with a PE firm in Middle east ..Loads of extra-curriculars.. worked in 24 countries ( 4 yrs Intl exp) .. GMAT 610.
