Had my interview on 7th Jan in Delhi. My interview was scheduled for 5.50 pm and I reached the Radisson Blu hotel by about 4.50 because we're told to reach an hour early. There was a delay in interviews of my panel for some reason.. I dunno why. My interview finally started after 7pm. I'd spent 2 hours pacing up and down, playing poker on my phone.. helped calm me down a bit

The one word essay I'd been given to write was on "Brutal". I wrote about the Australian cricket team's treatment of India

Anyway my interview got underway, they asked me the following questions (they're not in order, I've just written all the ones I can remember )

Why do you want to go for an MBA now

What would you bring to the table if we selected you

Why did you switch jobs to such different profiles (I moved from HR consulting to Education)

You've written your career goal after ISB as something different again (Marketing Analytics in a consulting firm). What is the rationale for this movement?
(I explained this saying I've used analytics in both my jobs and my current role especially requires me to analyse the performance of different mktg channels)

What are some of the firms that do this kind of work which you would be targeting

Getting in to consulting is very difficult in ISB. What will you do if you don't get in

Tell us about a time when you had a conflict with a senior at work. How did you handle the situation

What is your biggest regret of the last few years

What is the one thing you have learned from football, trekking and rock climbing (my main EC/ hobbies). How have you used this in your work.

And then they said they were done, did I have any questions for them. ( I asked that in spite of the limitations we have in India, what can ISB and Indian schools do to attract International students).

And then it was over.. lasted about 35 mins total I think. Then went and had some Daaru at a friends place :cheers:

I am a Hult MBA alumni 2011. Please never join Hult MBA or any other program at Hult. There is Zero Zero Zero Zero placements. There is Zero or no career services at all. Professors are ok but what and why will you study if you don't get jobs?

They also fool all people and make scholarship schemes and dramas with every person getting a different scholarship as much as he/she can bargain till the end. The school is so poor and has zero brand value that all our batch mates are still unemployed an only 4-5 students have got jobs through their relatives or friends.

They also make you fool by giving away fake loans when the load giving agency "Goed" is their own company only. It is just like that they are selling junk vehicles to you because no one buys them at installments.
I strongly warn you to not join Hult MBA and if you join you will lose all your money and parents savings and still remain unemployed.

All our batch mates are students are crying and so depressed that they are not keeping in contact or touch with one another.
They have none of their own campuses all rented spaces very small, no libraries all crap. Believe me the infrastructure of top 25 indian business schools are far better than all that of Hult. Except in London they acquired a big old building of Huron university.

There is Zero reputation of Hult in India and students are not even getting jobs 4-5 months after graduation. By graduation only 5-7% students got jobs. Student quality is good from India but Hult quality is poor. Never listen to any Hult employees. They will try to brainwash you.
In 2011 when Economist intelligence unit came us for interviews for Eiu MBA rankings of Hult, the Hult officers and employees blackmailed us to give good fake and excellent feedback to Economist people and if we dont Hult ranking will fall and the value of our degree will fall also. This is how they compromise the Rankings.

You can find on LinkedIn many such Hult MBA Graduates of 2011 class still unemployed and looking for jobs on themselves and writing in their profiles about their skills and the jobs they are seeking.
This is the reality.

I have given you all enough information to think and decide about Hult and I did it as a responsible Indian. Please don't send me any further queries about Hult or any more questions as I will not be responding them.

Probably the applicant felt they screwed it up...and not the panel

We generally have such applicants who feel/tell(in some cases) that they've not performed well
but fail in gauging panels view (not so easy though)

Not so as far as I know. I was at an ISB information event and the guy specifically said interview is only one of the parameters and NOT the next round after the apps. After the interviews, all your scores are added and your fate decided. Also, it happened with one of my friends that he was rejected after a good review as per the feedback he received because he missed the cut-off by a few points.

it surely can be dude... In the end I did say I was speculating :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin: ... Also Interviews are very important as you can use the opportunity to fill in various loopholes and gaps in your application... Though interview is just a part of overall picture, it should be the one having most weight age....

Well dude, Interview in the end is very subjective... People who feel they screwed up must be those who had the stress types and in all these interviews, the candidate feels he screwed up

Yes, agreed. I know of R1 admits who screwed up their interviews but still made it through.

I think a strong profile could balance a decent interview and a strong interview could balance a decent profile

Puys, I have been a silent follower so far but now I think I am in a position to add some value to the thread by posting my interview exp, which I had yesterday in Delhi.

Here is a detailed review of my interview

Profile:
Civil Engineer. Working in a Civil Construction Firm
12th: 91%
Engg: 7.95 /10. NIT Hamirpur
GMAT: 710.

I was among the first guys who were to be interviewed in the early morning Slot. Reached an hour earlier and waited patiently for ISB ppl to show up. Around 10-15 mins before the interviews were to begin, the essay topic, Perpetual was given to everyone. I guess most people had the same topic. I was told to head over to my panel on another floor. As I got off the lift, one member of the panel was already waiting for me ... Went into the room and the panel was composed of 3 Members (1 Faculty and 2 Adcom). All 3 had a big smile on their faces and told me to take my seat.

Q1) I was asked to give a brief introduction about myself.
I gave a small speech on my schooling and then began talking on my professional life. As I was to begin with my life outside of my work, I was asked to given them an estimate of constructing a 1Km long highway. I gave them the figures and a lot of cross questioning happened on my figures.

Q2) I am interested in Constructing a 15km long Highway, so tell me how long will it take.
I stated that it would take close to an year and I was then asked to justify my timeline and some more cross questioning on my timelines. They then asked me a lot of questions on the cost breakup of the project. I was then asked to explain on how material escalation is estimated and taken into account. I was then asked on what profit margins does the contractor finally manage. As I explained them the numbers, I was then asked on what steps are taken to protect the profit margins

Q3) We see that you are already successful in your career and see no reason for you to take an year off and spend so much money for ISB.
I then began to explain them my rationale for an MBA. Initially the alum was not convinced on it and said that I could acquire all the skills within a month in any academic institution. We still don't understand ur rationale for an MBA. I continued on what I wrote on my essays, elaborated further. I continued to talk on my entrepreneurial ideas, which I did not mention in my essays. I even provided them with an entire system on how I would build a business on my ideas that revolved a lot on Social Entrepreneurship. I then weaved around the story of how ISB will fit into the whole scheme of things.

Q4) So you are interested in starting a non profit. Interesting.
I answered back that I am not planning on starting a non profit and the business I build will be for profit. Cross Questioning on my for profit model and I explained them my rationale behind such a model.

Q5) Another alum broke my conversation and asked me on what impact I had as an placement coordinator during my college.
I then explained him on what I had achieved during my time. I explained my impact mostly with an emphasis on numbers and various initiatives I took during that time.

Q6) I see that in your career you prepared a lot many cost estimates for Highways. Now I want you to estimate the cost for construction a elevated corridor on top of NH8 and the total length of the corridor will be 150KM. Also people in Gurgoan want the corridor in their area to be made of Glass. You can take your time and give us your answer.

I did some workings and stated the impracticality of such an idea and explained them my rationale and suggested alternative ideas. As I explained them alternative ideas, another alum broke in and said that " You are to build the same road and we want you to tell us how to do, don't give us alternative suggestions."
I then thought for a while and offered suggestions on how to implement such an idea and how instead of a 150km motorway, just an 40km will suit their needs. I then gave ideas on how to finance the project and execute. I was finally asked to given in an figure, which I said in the end.

Q7) One of my achievements concerned an ethical issue at work and how I fought to follow the right way of doing the work. The faculty member then asked me that how will I be able to survive in such a world where bribe giving is the norm.

I then stated that mostly organization bribe only when they are not patient enough to follow the system. I clearly stated that I will persist to my level best to follow the system and all. I was then asked on how will I survive in the business to which I said that in the end, my company or I will be given future business on my delivery and completing my assignments within the deadlines. I continued to say that the companies that sought to bribe their way have already indicated their impatience and will adopt shortcuts to get their work done and this will prove to their failure. In the end business is given on deliverability and not how quick you are able to procure such business.

I was then asked If I had some questions and I asked them on their dual campus models. As the faculty member started answering the questions, the alums jumped in and began asking questions themselves, saving me the trouble :biggrin:

Then the faculty member said that time was up and they planned to interview me for only 30 mins but it seems that we have been chatting up for over 45 minutes, so move along. I then got up, enquired the names of the panel members, shook hands and thanked them for taking time of their busy schedules to interview me.

Suggestions: I did screw up to a small extent on Why ISB and MBA in the start. So suggest all to be very clear on their answer. It will be better if people practice answering the question with their friends and ask your friend to grill you a lot on the same.
Another issue was that in my guesstimate answer, I became a little skeptical on their idea. I guess people better adopt a more optimistic approach in their answers and if you don't understand the question, you better ask them again..

I was given Panel 6 at 5:50pm at Dwarka. I reached the venue by 4:15pm as they had mentioned in the invite that we must reach at least an hour before the scheduled time for an another assessment. I already knew that another assessment is nothing but paragraph writing

When I reported at the reception, I was made to sign in a sheet for attendance and then immediately given a paper which had paragraph topic written on top of it. Topic was "Brutal". I looked around for a seat and found that at least 20 people were there, all holding a sheet of paper(paragraph), some were writing and some had already finished. I sat on a sofa and started writing my paragraph. Puys, its important that you practice few paragraphs on random topics beforehand.It really helps a lot.

After finishing my paragraph, I broke in casual chat with few people. None of them was from my background(IT) and I liked it in a way There was a gal in advertising, one guy in "strategic consulting", another was a "climate change consultant", another was an investment banker. Seemed that I was the most inferior of the lot, just kidding

4 panels were running late from their schedule by approx 45 mins and unfortunately mine was one of them. At 5:50, a lady went to my panel who was scheduled for 5:10 !! I thought now I will have to wait until 6:30pm at least. The wait was killing and brutal. Suddenly at 6:30pm few people started joining our waiting lounge. At first, we thought that they are panel members who have just finished their respective panels. But no, they were some other party who had booked the halls(where interviews were happening) for some event. The interview was scheduled to be over by 6:20pm and the hotel staff had given booking to that party from 6:30pm onwards. It was ironical to see such a mismanagement when we had come for a management interview.They had kept just 10mins of buffer time! Soon, ISB people got into panic mode and a commotion started. Hotel staff was torn off between the other party and the ISB people. I thought my interview is gonna be cancelled or I may have to give it in some cafeteria Anyways, it seems ISB had reserved a room somewhere else where I was called for the interview at 7pm.Basically it was a room in the hotel from which they had removed beds n all and made it look like a mini-hall.
I entered inside, there were 3 people, one lady among them. They greeted me well but didn't offer me chair on which I myself asked them "May I take a seat?" Then my interview started -

Lady (L)- So you have been mostly in North, tell us more about it.
Me - I said I have been born and brought up in Varanasi and have done my schooling also from Varanasi and then moved on to South to do BTech.

Gentleman 2(G2) - "Was your degree 4yrs or 5yrs?"
Me- "4yrs"

G2- "Then did you do a job after class-12 or something? "
Me- "No, I took a yr break to prepare for IIT"

G2- "Oh, I see"

Gentleman 1(G1)- "So,you want to start this company of yours.Tell us more about it"

Me- Explained my business model and told them the background why I intend to start this company.

L - Asked a specific ques on what I will do in my business
Me- Answered

G1 - "Why MBA? Why dont you start now?"
Me - Answered well as I had prepared for this question.

L - "But the target companies you are focusing, are working well even without following your idea. They are doing good. Why will they join with you?"
Me - Answered to the best of my abilities to which she didn't seem to be much convinced

L - "I am still not convinced. Convince me"
Me - I gave them some rough figures and explained that if the companies follow my idea rather than follow the existing pattern, they will save money. On this all the 3 panelists, nodded their head in approval and the lady was all smile

There were many more questions on my plan and I guess I convinced them with my answers on all with few surprise questions where I was stumped but I think I handled them well.



After all this griiling by G1 and L, they seemed to have run out of questions. They turned to G2 and asked him if he has any questions to ask me. On this, he just asked me "What do you do in your current profile?" I answered this question well and highlighted the work done, achievements etc.

In the end,

L - "Any questions for us?"
Me - Asked two questions related to my B-plan and they duly answered those.

With a warm handshake in the end with all the panelists and some exchange of wishes and all,I left the room thinking how it went off and planning how to spend the next day (Sunday)

I think G1 and L were alums and G2 was from adcom. All except the lady looked quite senior.

I hope this exp will be of some use to you in your interviews. Just one statement I would say, "BE YOURSELF". Dont try to become someone else. If you are not passionate about something, dont say it just bcas you think its cool and help you in getting through.

Was the first one to be interviewed.
One word to describe the experience "GRILLING"
Three people on the panel 2 Alums and a Prof/Adcom (all POKER faced throughout).

Questions
1. Job responsibility in previous positions - related questions
2. My solar energy venture

10 minutes passed - suddenly prof/adcom asked for the one word essay i had written..I told him that we all were just handed over the sheet to write and were told to write and submit the essay after the interview...seemed pissed...almost picked up the phone to call (possibly interview coordinator) to instruct him to get the essays written before the interview.

The prof said that he needed the essay to evaluate my cadidature/both alums agreed. They gave me 10 minutes to write it - there and then. Was kinda weird - with three pairs of eyes staring at you and a strange word " PERPETUAL" to write about...anyhow i scribbled something and gave it to them. They all read it one by one....no reaction.Seems they were trained to maintained that hard look.

Then began the real grill !!

Prof - I'm giving you money - build a profitable model for primary healthcare delivery in rural India and present it to us....hmm (stemmed from my interest in entrepreneurship)

Thought about it for a couple of minutes - presented a model - counter questions from all three - asked some good/thoughtful but many frivolous questions - stuck to my model - defended my POV!!

15 minutes passed - they saw their watch - 35-40 minutes were over- asked if i had any questions - i had one - exchanged pleasantries.

Takeaway - I could have been more articulate but hindsight is always 20/20 right!!!

Had my interview yesterday.....it was a very light dose..don't know what to make of it....

After I talked about my profile.....based on their first question.....

Everything revolved around...why MBA, why ISB, why this profile ....

U already got a job in similar profile with present qualifications...why ISB ?

Then based on I interest in market research, I was given a case study on how would I increase car sales of a particular brand seven folds.....

I guess they they were happy with my qualitative approach but wanted more on quatitative side as well......

Don't know what to make of it....it was so cool and conversational.....last may be 30 mins......

No other questions EC , hobbies etc........short term long term all covered in above questions.......

IIM 2.5 and rest MR 3.5 yrs....

I guess one younger looking guy was an alum, other elderly person could be a prof or adcom..no idea....both we very nice and gave enff time for me to answer.

Obviously, feel now that I could have answered some stuffs better....but have to wait to know more

Overall - din't bring up any concrete stuff it lasted about 25 min and we talked a lot of unwanted stuff.. they din't ask me anything they might judge me with i feel .. and the one question they asked about the case study i screwed up :-(

so i think it went bad.. but still "Hoping against Hope" that i make it and they liked something about me ..

I had so much stuff about my profile, my ECS, my contributions to so many other things ready .. was never asked and my ECs were supp to be my strong point :-P

Anyway i am done .. only thing to do now is wait wait wait wait ......

Previous academics - Excellent. Formerly All India Rank 1 in the entrance exam. Won a lot of awards in competitions during college.
Extra Curricular - Good. Vice President of one of the clubs in college.

3 Panelists (guessing all alumni). The interview lasted approximately 20 minutes.

Got called for my essay at around 11 i think. the word given was satire. Wrote some crap and referred to South Park in the middle

Had heard from another candidate in the morning that panel 1 was where all the < 3 yrs ppl are scheduled and that they were screwing ppl left right and center. A lot of grilling. But somehow when my time came i was called to panel 4 or 5. cant seem to remember which it was exactly

Overall - din't bring up any concrete stuff it lasted about 25 min and we talked a lot of unwanted stuff.. they din't ask me anything they might judge me with i feel .. and the one question they asked about the case study i screwed up :-(

so i think it went bad.. but still "Hoping against Hope" that i make it and they liked something about me ..

I had so much stuff about my profile, my ECS, my contributions to so many other things ready .. was never asked and my ECs were supp to be my strong point :-P

Anyway i am done .. only thing to do now is wait wait wait wait ......

There were Skype interviews btn Dec 20 - Dec 23 ( Not sure of exact dates) for US and UK candidates. I guess there will be another one soon.

I'm based in US too and have asked for skype coz i am sure i will be able to take skype i/v even if i was not in my current location and had to travel somewhere else

But should admire your gutsy decision to go to hyd for i/v. Given that they give only 3-5 days notice do you think u wud be able to have all the logistics worked out? it would be an expensive affair...
In case you get a mail for interview you could get it rescheduled if you cant make it

I was hoping the AdCom would give me atleast a week's notice for the interview. Yes, it would be expensive. Thanks for the advice regarding the reschedule of interview.

Does anyone know, if R2 results are declared all at once (ie on feb 15 in this case) or piecemeal??

If i think about it, it seems that they declare it as and when they are confident about the candidate profile...coz if they wait till the end, given that people might reject the offers - they might not be able to fill the seats. i know that they have waitlist candidates too but for R2 they might not have enough time for confirmation
For R1 it might be different and for R2 there might be some deviations

Let me take a stab at this one

I do not think R2 results are declared piecemeal for the reason that we have not seen this happen in R1 and hence, unlikely to happen for R2, no matter how short a time. Asking the current batch of 2012 may be a good way to verify.

Next, I do hear that some have rejected Mohali offers in R1. Those seats got vacant. Same scenario would probably repeat for R2. Rejection rate might even be higher as some would already have accepted offers from other universities.

Yes, there HAS to be a waitlist in R2 as well for 2 reasons:
1. If 570 (a guess) seats are vacant as of now, the adcom can make an offer to ONLY 570 candidates.
2. There are bound to be some people who would reject the offer and hence, these seats would need to be filled again.

your estimate seems to be right...but we really are not sure ...how many are active participants?

If i assume what you are saying is true - that results are out after 15 days then,
It would effectively be upto 30 days (15 days for results and 15 days time limit for student to accept the offer)
