Does my profile hold good & provides any hope for me to apply to ISB if i happen to score good on GMAT?

PS: I dont have any additional impressive profile-value-addition things or achievements as such.

Please guide me accordingly?

Bhai none of us are profile evaluators , neither do we know what clicks and what does not . We are applicants similar to you . So do not keep such expectations that we can tell you whether you are good enough or not . You have to decide that on your own

If you got the impression that I was in anyway trying to argue with you on the topic or in anyway - for the lack of better word - attack you then the fault lies purely with my writing style. The writing style tends to convey a whole another meaning without my meaning to. I have been trying to tell her not to do so but she does not listen to me - its as if she has a mind of her own. Right now also I am not sure whether she will convey the correct meaning or not.

I deliberately quoted "Working leisurely" only because AC or no AC my work does not seem to go on a leisurely pace. I so wish that it would but the guys who decide the timelines are conspiring against me. In any case, healthy or unhealthly the views are mine. Like I have said it must me that part of IT industry where I am working. Can't help it, can I? Do I regret working my ass off? Not even for a minute.

haha...what gave you the impression that I was being senti...if my writing did that..then it means even my writing is flawed too...and I too have to settle this with "her".

btw...a person's experience not only differs with organization that one is working with, but also with the team that the person is working with....

There is a big red flag that even the AdCom usually screens an applicant for....if a person wants to do MBA only because one is frustrated and just for the heck of getting out of the current industry...then that is a straight BIG no no.....

so please do not...directly or indirectly give that impression....my 2 cents (I have only those many left )....because I am a poor IT guy ...wat say thisguy?

I think I can safely say that while an interview is a very important step, there are many more things that go into deciding whether you'll make it or not. The best interview on the planet won't help if your work-ex, education, ECA etc don't add up to much in comparison (a highly unlikely scenario I admit) and conversely, a slightly below par interview won't destroy your chances if your profile is impressive.

As far as "grilling" during the interview is concerned, I wouldn't read too much into it. It could mean that they found something interesting in your essays and wanted to find out more or they were not very clear on some point and wanted clarifications.

You have to remember that these interviews are not meant to uncover your expertise, they are conducted to get a better insight into what sort of a person/professional you are. Last advice - now that the interview is done it's "sunk cost" (a phrase you'll come to hate should you make it to ISB ), so sit back, relax and enjoy the ride

So who else has got an interview call? Would be helpful to hear the interview experiences of others, not for any other reason but to benchmark mine with theirs :)

Just a question, probably a very silly one. Once the interview happens, and the adcom sits to deliberate. Do they only look at the interview in isolation, or do they look at the overall package, i.e. the application, work ex, essays and GMAT score? I am asking because a number of interviews, including mine, have been very general and at times focused on just one or two aspects of the essays.

I agree with whatever said. first respect the field you are in even if anyone is planning to change field. after all thats the field which made you have this thought process and the financial help needed for post graduate education.

..again a lot of things depend on Company that you are working for....if you are stuck with a bad team or organization...you cannot blame the entire industry for the misdoings....

"Working leisurely?" ....a typical example of how media quotes the statements out of context....I said " Working leasurly in Air conditioned offices ".....try working on a mechanical company's floor...or at a leather factory workshop in summers.... or even at construction sites.....you will get to know what I mean...and I have seen even construction managers sweat it out at the sites....not just labour....I have frends in telecom who get a call even at 2 AM to go to the site to diagnose the problem...

I do not mean that people don't work in IT...all I mean is that the work conditions are much more conductive....Does your profession sound leasurly now??....many people dream of the job that we are doing....not respecting your profession equals not respecting the dreams of thousands of youth.....

Barring Consulting and Finance....the opportunities are high in IT as compared to many other sectors.....and I am not just talking about India...try googling job portals of US, Australia and Europe....

I don't think so. To be sure that ISB already has your score send a mail to pgpadmissions@isb.edu mentioning your name, GMAT ID, Appointment number, date of exam and date when the score was sent to ISB. Admission team will revert back to you.

I am not an expert on ISB, however I had an admit to ISB in R2 and to number of US Schools in R1 and R2. I preferred a US Business School for personal reasons. By what I went through last year, I understand that the seats filled in the two rounds are same in number, however the applicants may be 3-4 times more in round two. Hence, R2 is definitely more competitive.

Hmm... this may be because the counselor would have felt that you are almost there and you would be "in place" for applying in R1.

I think early applicants have a slight advantage as Adcom is trying to define the class at that time. That being said, the advantage is not that huge that you should consider not submitting the best application.

So, if u were to submit the same score-same essays etc in either round then earlier u apply better yr chances but if you want to improve your profile in any way (better thought essays, better GMAT) between now and R2 then for sure waiting for R2 is worth.

This is just my opinion so take it for what its worth .....

Are the persons, whose name I have given, are contacted soon after I have provided the information? I am asking because as I am applying in R1, I will be resigning only in March, if I get an admit. I do not want my company to know that I will be resigning in March.
LDP team does not contact you until you get an admit. Your first communication with LDP team would be around late feb or early Mar. LDP team would expect to collect this information before last week of March. The schedule may change slightly but would be roughly same.

Secondly, can you please tell me more about Experiential Learning Programme? Can anybody apply to it or is there any kind of cut off? What kind of companies do we go to? What kind of work is done? etc.
ELPs are live projects that come to ISB from corporate. the companies include the whos who of almost all industries. I cannot name them on this forum for obvious reasons.
Most of the times the kind of work is consulting in nature.
all the students are allowed to apply to all the projects that come on campus. you usually apply in teams and then there is selection procedure based on profiles and interviews. so No cut off.

Work exp: 3+ years of IT experience with a reputed MNC

Academic achievements:
- Was part of Core team(Documentation) in College Cultural festivals
- Presented a paper in a conference.

Professional achievements:
- Got a few awards in last 3 years for a good performance in my team.
- Handled almost all my projects as a single handed person and that too for critical modules.
- Apart from work,I am also part of various clubs and activities like CSR and few more.

Can somebody please evaluate my chances of getting a call from ISB this time?

I read in some blogs that there used to be an elective called New Product Development and Pricing by Prof. Manish Gangwar but the current list of electives only mentions a course called Pricing. I am not sure if the course has been renamed.

You should also include how will you contribute to the student pool at ISB.

I will agree with your friends. This is how I see this essay.
1. What you want in 3 years - a simple paragraph of one or two lines. This will be opening line to your essay.
2. Past experience which shows that you already have a foundation. This tells that your future goals compliment your current profile thus justifying your future goals.
3. Now as with every goal there are some gaps. Tell how ISB education will help you and how exactly you will achieve them.
4. End with a small para if possible otherwise OK.

This gives a flow from past to present to future.

EDIT: In the point 3 you can explain further about your goals.

Look at the bright side, one gets to have international experience whether though physically being outside home country or through interactions with clients and onsite teams. One gets to work with companies with reputations throughout the world and watch closely how organizations operate in international arena.
One gets to participate in lots of organizational activities.

I have not thought from this point of view before. This is a completely new perspective for me. I think you may be right.

In my opinion, it is OK. I am doing it. If telling same thing in 2 different places will not help then it will not hurt your chances either.

Why do people consider bein from IT pool to be a curse or as a disadvantage?

Someone rightly said, its all in the mind. If youa re ready to believe that your being in IT is a curse, then certainly you are making others believe so...including the AdCom.

If you do not respect what you do, you cannot expect AdCom to do so....or for that matter don't expect anyone to do so.

I have been working for close to 3.5 yrs in IT...and when I see the job profles of some of my friends, I can proudly say that I am doing much better...and that I could have been doing much worse.....

For that matter...ask someone working in telecom, you will know when you will get a call at 3 AM to look after a site that is down, or ask someone working in a call centre...or ask someone working on a floor in a small mechanical company...

NOM to people working in such industries....I am not undermining their jobs...My point is that there are much harder ways up the ladder....we at IT are in much better position....

Its upto a person how he makes most of the environment he is working in. Whether he frets about where he is working or he actually does something to make that workplace better.

I scored a 590 on GMAT.
But still I am shamefully asking, is it worth giving it a try.

Working with client facing roles is not a big deal with 5 years experience. With 590 you should try this year only if you think you have excellent profile and can present to admissions committee that you can add a lot to the diversity of class. There is a lot of competition in IT pool with great GMAT scores, so you will have to convince adcom thoroughly that you can make a difference in class profile. If you can do that then please go ahead.

I know you have already said that you have average profile but I wanted to present an alternative to you. Look at ways if you can present your profile differently. May be you can explain your not-so-good GMAT score and compare it with good acads in 3rd essay.

If you feel that is not possible then the only option you will be left with is to reappear in GMAT.

If you apply this year and are not accpeted then you can avail feedback services from ISB and then you will have a clearer idea how much your GMAT score has played a role in reject.

I think you should retry GMAT ....ISB has a 700+ average GMAt and the average is higher for IT which has the toughest competition

I want to do MBA(from ISB) for switching my career to Management Consulting.I have got exposure to principles of consulting in my current job profile,but I want to get deeper understanding and skills in this area.
I just want to have opinion of people on this.
Puys who are from IT background and want to switch their career in Consulting, what reasons you will give to adcom for that?

adips, there is no general approach to this. IT is a vast industry - you could be performing any function within it. Your career goals essay should stem from :
1. what you have done in the past 5 years &
2. what you want to do going ahead.
3. how wil ISB help you get there?

In your case, you have already had some exposure to consulting, so you have a reasonable arguement that you have seen it from the periphery, now you want to get inside it. You should talk to some people in the consulting industry and find out what chart your career can follow with your background.

Finally, a lot of applicants want to move over to consulting from IT, so you have tough competition. You would have to ensure that your career goals essay is solid with clear cut objectives.

LDP team sends you a request to submit 10 people's contact info, superiors, peers and subordinates. those people are send a questionnaire. based on this the evaluation is shared with you during the course. IMP: This questionnaire has no effect on your course performance, it serves as a development plan for you over the year at ISB.

Well, advertising and manufacturing, was tough, i started off in a generic way that marketing when u concieve a product may be u need to get some idea about problems related to supply chain... i know it was a bad start .... then i told maybe i could share about some issues related to process and gaps .... etc....

They grilled me quite a bit on my achievement related question .... don't know what they really expected ...?

Why u r back .... i told that last year i had idea abut what functional area i would like to work in but maybe was not very clear baout roles and industry ... told them went back and tried to identify the same and thus back this year....

I think yesterday most of us were reapplicant ...

1) About your achievements essay, was it more of discussion for elaborating u r achievements or did adcom concentrated questions related to why you have provided those achievements

2) Were there any other discussions beyond the essays? As in, was there discussion on hobbies or your acads?

but wouldn't a passport pic pdf print/scan have "white spaces" around the A4 size photo..?

You can crop the white space and upload the photo
