HEY GUYS i need your help! iam 26 years old. my acads are poor. i have completed my engineering in computer science with 2nd division. i got 1 year of work ex. in IT oracle 9i database. besides this i write CAT, SNAP this year & got the call from symbiosis my gd/pi was good but unfortunately haven't converted any symbiosis call not even got any call from any IIM. i have a lots of another option but don't want to do my MBA from any bad reputed MBA college. i am confused what to do should i work for 5 years & work hard for GMAT & get a decent score of 700+ or should i work for 2 years & write CAT again. if i should go for 2nd option then i will be 28 years old for CAT whereas the average age for CAT allied college is only 24-25 & if i should go for first option like write GMAT & opt for ISB then i will be 30 years old whereas the average age for ISB is only 27. my age become a problem for me. please help me give me some suggestion you all are most experienced person i am sure you can give the right suggestion.

Just before the interview, you will be made to write a 100-200 word essay on some word/topic. As far as preparation goes, there are more than enough threads on that topic at PG and elsewhere.

Had my interview at the ISB campus on 5th. Extremely chilled interview, the guys didnt cross question much. Lasted for 45 mins. Actually it was chilled out for almost everyone, so basically there wasnt a single person who said their interview went badly. So I really don't know whether I will be selected or not ..best of luck to all for the 15th!

Despite increasing volume of information , how many times we get to know the real picture. The housing bubble burst bringing down many so called hallowed financial institutions with it but myth of MBA continues. Let us talk about first
one year full time executive MBAs. They are turning into nightmarish exp for most but people are not honest/ frank enough to admit it. That is understandable as who would want to portray that whatever investment they have made has made no difference to their careers. Rather for most it has made them worse off than candidates who didnot fall into trap of transformation, MBAs are supposed to bring. As those folks saved at least 35 to 40 lacs. Being in placement committee of my institute and having witnessed that most of the students getting into same role with similar salary they were drawing prior to the course was truly a revealation.From PSU/ Govt , almost all returned to their previous organisation without a single decent offer.


The opportunity cost of these courses is close approx 35-40 lacs ( Tuition fee 15-20 lac+ interest of 6-10 lacs, foregone salary of one year, living expenses of close to 3-4 lacs) . The harsh reality is that people struggle to return to their organisations as well if positions are filled. As we progress in our career, the only thing that matters is relevant experience and domain knowledge . Studying a few modules of finance, strategy , marketing or operations may provide some theoretical knowledge but it wont add much value at least as far as employability in a different role is considered. 70% of folks in these courses are from IT most of the time whose expertise is project management which is already in excess in market. Even for other roles in IT , it is turning into graveard. IT folks are driving these courses in their misplaced zeal to change their career. It changes almost invariably for worse.

Many become entrepreneur as they dont have much option.

Information asymmetry is unfathomable in life be it marriage, education, job or relationship. Having done one such course myself, I know the reality hard way. Those betting on return in long term would do well to remember Keynes - In long term we are dead.

If you are comfortably rich and can afford 20 lakhs as fees of self development and some learning- apply to ISB.

If you plan to take loan or need money in next 3 years. Think twice before applying to ISB, why apply when can't afford. It will be difficult to stop yourself from taking loan, once selected.

Some of the students who were placed last year have been giving joining dates in March 2010.
With growth nowhere in sites, and MBAs returning from abroad, there is a crowd of MBAs in the job market.

I think you know that Everybody is cost cutting- Result: Discretionary expenses like consulting etc. are being cut down.
Except by top rated companies, it has become very difficult to raise money in the debt market- growth plans are on hold.
Retail stores are being closed down in many places, further construction stopped in most projects.

One person is doing the job of 2 for cost cutting- as a result new positions are seldom created.

Satyam and others downsizing- lot of experienced guys in the market ready to serve at low cost.

Very true.Am working with(not for ) MSRDC and i can confirm this quote. Government is deliberately delaying a lot of project for lack of funds. Prestigious clients like NHPC have cancelled a lot of strategic projects. Project Management consultants are heading towards extinction.
I wont be surprised if recession hits back again may be late in 2011 or early 2012.

Hi Pratik, U n I are on the same boat....I have done my MBA from SIMS (your college's sister concern....:-P). In fact I have also planned for ISB, but may be for next year.

To answer your question, can you elaborate on your question as it is not clear to me? I think many people like us have a very common doubt - "Whether to do MBA another time or not?" and if that is the case then here is the answer -
I check the profile of ISB class of 2010 and found out that there a some students who hv a prior MBA (from MICA, SIBM, ISB&M;, SCIT, etc). Also, I attended the ISB information session at Pune. Mr. Menon - Director Admissions of ISB clarified this doubt when I asked him the same question. Also, in Pagalguy ISB Admissions forum, he said that close to 4% students in ISB has prior MBA. So, I think that is not the problem, but be very clear on "Why do you want to go for another MBA?" - I hope as you have made your mind, you must be clear on that, so no worries.

And regarding your profile, it is very difficult to say as it depends on in which pool your application will be considered. e.g. in Pagalguy, I read a comment written by a guy; he is IIT grad, normal is studies, engagement manager in IT consulting, has started two ventures, etc etc (a very attractive profile), and he has applied for ISB in R1, but till now he has got the call for interview, but many persons having comparatively-mediocre profile have got the interview call.

So, don't worry, and if you have decided, then apply for it.

ISB hyderabad is one of the top schools in the world today for an MBA. They have faculty coming down from Wharton and other good schools. A 675 at the GMAT realistically speaking is not nearly enough. With a score like 675, you must have some very good work experience. Good work ex would be close to 4 -5 years. Also with that you must have an excellent essay, written in a professional way yet projecting yourself, your aims and aspirations. I would suggest to you that in order to strengthen your application, you have to make sure that all other aspects of your apps are excellent, like the essays and the work ex, if you feel that your app is not strong enough you will have to take the GMAT again. 675 is good ! but you can do better.

I'm sorry but this piece of advice is far from the truth. I am a current student and I know a few of my classmates who have been admitted with a 640! So this is a note in general to all prospective applicants out there please do not be disheartened by a low score, even after 2 to 3 attempts. Your journey is not over.

Why would you let a lower score affect the rest of what you have done and achieved in life. I cannot stress more on this when I say that an application is viewed holistically and your GMAT score is just a small part of the entire application. If you have great achievements and if you feel you have what it takes then do not let something like a low GMAT score beat you down. A low GMAT score can be made up in several ways through your application.

Informed candidates who have done their due diligence will agree with what I have just said.

I recommend prospective students to direct your questions to a thread I have opened titled 'ISBConnect'. The purpose of the thread is for ISB current students and alums to answer all your queries.

As far as GMAT goes, Get as high as you can ! Irrespective of your profile, The more the better.

For the records, ISB selects future students mainly between 650-760.

2 years as a Manager in the hospitality sector in NZ (managed overall operations of a 50 room property)
1.5 years as a Manager in the security industry in India (managed the MD secretariat and was involved with strategy and planning)
