You get your seat at ISB, what plans for life before classes begin?

Still have my commitments at my present org, if and when I am done with that, I am going on a road trip: Bangalore (Bandipur) -> Kanha -> Ranthambore -> Gir -> Bangalore


The only way to get through this time, is to fantasize about the awesome plans after it is over.

I am in US and I am too waiting for IIMC/ISB results ... Selected or not, I am planning to take a 45 day sabbatical( i just got eligible last mnth) and roam in europe with wife.... If not selected , I will decide what to do next... otherwise, after sabbatical, I will resign in feb end and pack my bags to india to spend time with parents and then join....

I hope all of us so eagerly waiting at least get into one place ....

- i can feel what you were feeling till now. my interview got over today and this wait for the result in killing the whole thought process :banghead:

I am an R1 applicant and was interviewed yesterday. (skype+telephonic )
As I moved from Houston to LA a week back, I was busy arranging logistics for the interview for last 1 week.

Anyway, I suited up for the interview, dialed the number. The panel introduced themselves, but I could only catch one name. I asked them whether I should switch the video call on & the response was "No thats ok" :(.

Q1: Speak on 'PIN' for a minute.
Response: I wasnt sure if it was paper pin, Personal Identification Number or Power shares in india. He asked to go ahead with either. So, I spoke on Personal Identification Number for a bit.

Q2: Why are you with the same organization for last 5.5 yrs. What keeps you going?
Response: Career Progression.

Q3: What after ISB and how are you unique?
Response: As per the essay.

Q4: As my essays had the mention of Energy sector, they asked me to explain about energy sector.
Response: I started with O&G;, but was inturrupted with a question on Clear energy. Spoke a bit on that, but was told that they were expecting numbers. And in the follow through, they shot the next question.

Q5: An example of clear energy and the future
Response: Spoke a bit on that

Q6: What if MBA doesnt work for next 2 years?
Response: Spoke about prospects in career progression.

Q7: Any question?
Response: No.

I do not know what to infer from the interview. It was kinda stress interview and I was taken aback when they asked me not to switch the video call on. Anyway, fingers crossed!

Wow! My assumption that the interview invites are sent out based on evaluating the applicants comparatively is wrong.

So, you are interviewed based on your own merit, and not on relative merit compared to the entire pool.

This means that ISB interviews a different number of people even if the number of applicants over two successive years is the same. It would be impossible to say that the number of interviews has gone down because number of applicants has gone down (or any similar trend which assumes direct proportionality between number of applicants and interviews)

I guess I could stretch this further and annoy the day lights out of every one who reads... i shall stop.

My respect for ISB adcom has gone up.

They actually sent out a mail to all applicants sometime in mid october informing about this procedure. BTW, its not rolling admissions. They send out interview invites on rolling basis

Great to find people with similar bent of mind. Selected or not, I am planning to quit my job in Dec and take some time off to figure out what next.

If I do not get selected, I have brilliant plans for myself . I Will be taking 1 month off to hitch hike in Europe Even planned out all the finances - The airfare + train passes + misc expenses all under 50-60 K and have friends in different european universities who will "have to" bear me as a houseguest for that period .

So whatever happens, I am celebrating

Thanks for the overwhelming response to my query about Scholarship essay. I must be very frank (and equally apologetic) for confusing between merit based and need-based scholarship. After going through the ISB website once again, I came across the fact that all students will be considered for merit based scholarship automatically.

Thanks nevertheless for the help. And apologies once again for not going thru the website first in detail. I hope the replied that all of you gave would be helpful for someone out here.

I think that March period should only matter if the person is just touching the work-ex requirement by then. for people who have 2+ year exp it doesn't have any bearing.I plan to leave my job in Jan once selected

And want to enjoy one month off , wow...............

@Sandeep_G: I've wondered the same.

My justification - ISB's is a rigorous course, I would like to take some time off, and get me into the right state of my mind. I do that by travelling. Being away from everyday routine helps me think of the larger picture and clear my head.

Some US B-schools, as an ice-breaker, ask students to make a presentation about what they did the few months before they joined the course, and some amazing things come out there. One went to Mongolia, another went to Everest Base camp (from US), and one took up a job as a bartender!

2) don't you think applying after 2 years would be more suitable. how do you justify that this year is the correct timing? (i've little above 3 yr. of exp till date)
3) give an instance where you have shown innovative capabilities.
(i am working in R&D; division of my company, have few patents and have submitted technology based buisness ideas in my company. and a lot of innovation ideas in other areas of work such as a corporate social club activities)
4) What are your post mba goals?
5) what if ISB does not happen? how are you going to achieve your goals?
6) questions for us?

A quick question.
Do you think it'll be a good idea if I mention in the essay a fact (related to my work experience, can be categorized as an achievement), which better could have been mentioned in the reco by my current manager.
The problem is that I'm not sure if she's mentioned that or not in the reco and she's already submitted it !

After all nobody knows u better than urself...so if u think something is important then mention it...
One suggestion, once u are done with essay...share it with ur recommendar and ask her to jst read to check if the essay is in sync with what she has written. That will give u a fair idea....

Interesting incident from my interview experience at ISB ( I havent posted it yet since i had other b schools aps to finish till yesterday....and now it seems rather pointless) ....

When they asked me "any questions for us".... I said something to the extent of how several online forums are discussing the admissions process to death!!! I asked them how they managed to keep their interviews and selection process objective and not subjective....with so many different panels etc.

The alum went on to explain how McKinsey spent 2 years framing their selection process and structured certain standardised parameters (16 of them if i remember correctly) on which to assess candidates. All candidates are assessed on these parameters on a common scale. and to keep the overall selection process objective....the interview is only 25% of the entire selection criteria. the other 75% are broken into 3 other categories of acads, professional background / competency and application. At this point the adcom member retorted something about how he hopes i am not an avid contributor to pagalguy when the alum stepped in and said...pls. share this on pagalguy...its important to get the correct information out. so... there.... let the speculations continue....
