No, HDFC bank does not keep your certificate. They have an MOU with ISB and in case you do not pay back the amount, you ISB degree will be revoked by ISB. So even though you may have that piece of paper(degree) but it will be useless. This is a common procedure followed for loans in IITs, IIMs and ISB. I have availed such loan in the past and it is not as scary as it sounds :)

R1 ~ (570 - 57)/2 ~256 provided its the same for R1 and R2.

I will go with the 250 figure... +- 10 ....

And I guess total waitlisted candidates are around 80... (including both R1 and R2)...

10th 83, 12th 79, Engg.- 62 with exp of around four years in marketing. I am working with my family and managing schools and an industrial training institute in my native village for last two years.
Pretty decent extra curriculars ( played at national level in basketball and state level in various sports)
have been associated with an NGO in past and STSE ( state talent search exam) rank holder.

Last yr, one guy got 5 lakh and one guy got 2 lakh waiver on this forum and none of them wrote any essay as they reported... so, for merit based , I guess its overall application...
while for need based, their will be a separate category applicable for only those who have written the scholarship essays

My take for results is 12th as the website still shows on or before 15th... and going by past friday experiences, I hope its 12th ... else they will spoil another weekend ...

I wrote the scholarship essays, however, since there was very little time available, I did submit same essay for both the scholarships.

Now, I had multiple rounds of discussions with some seniors and mentors on how to approach these essays. There were 3 distinct points that came out of those discussions, and again, these are applicable to any need based scholarship essays.

1. Demonstrate the need - You are the best judge for this, list down your financial constraints which have made you apply for this scholarship. And how they can jeopardize your chances of attending ISB, if you are admitted without a scholarship.

2. Show that you deserve the scholarship - List down your achievements in the face of your financial adversity. Examples like taking up a part time job to support yourself through school/college etc really stand out. This is the part of the essay where you can really open up and showcase yourself as an complete individual who has managed his/her life balancing their ambitions and requirements though passion and hard work.

3. Connect with the brand providing scholarship - This is generally the most difficult/important part of all. For example, if the scholarship is in the name of a reputed individual, try to bring out your traits and passions which are similar to that person. If the scholarship is for Young Leaders, you would have to identify yourself as the same corroborating with evidence from your professional and personal life.

I am not saying that I covered all of this or did proper justice to all these topics in my essays , like I said this is what I have collected as major points from my research. Hope it comes of some use to the future aspirants.

FYI: It seems to me that you have personal enmity with IITians :wow:..Thought of mentioning to you that I secured rank within 500 in IITJEE 2001 & within top 10 in state level JEE, both in general category...but my philosophy tells if a student fails to do well in one day IIJEE , it does not necessarily mean that he is not good at math/physics/chemistry..don't judge somebody by one-day exam dude....

my suggestions to you : don't utter rubbish without having complete understanding of the same else even a MBA degree from Harvard will not help you to become successful in future.

regarding the scholarship essay. I didn't write it myself, but someone who i was preparing for the ISB interview with had written it. So I can tell you what he wrote - Talked about how starting his own venture has put him under financial strain. In regard to why he deserves the scholarship, he didn't say much.

The thing about need based scholarships - you deserve them if you need them, you don't need to give further reason.

You need to differentiate yourself enough to get into ISB. The scholarship essay isn't available to the interview panel, it is looked at by another separate panel. So, if you want to, you may (and will have to) repeat from the regular essays.

And, my standard disclaimer: This is my opinion, based on reading ISB website and hearing from few people. The only way to be sure, is to contact ISB.

Really not in a proper taste. If you need a proof of his credentials, you should look at his CGPA. That is something no quota/reservation can fix, even IF he has got into quota.

a quant score of 50 is good enuf to boast of above average analytical and quantitative skills ... you are not expected to be an expert of "GMAT" english to prove anything ...

btw instead of questioning the credentials of others it would have been better had you tried to give back to the community from where you have undoubtedly gained a lot by atleast sharing your Int exp or even a shred of your profile ...

buddy i know one thing for sure, u havent worked with big teams and even if u had, u havent learnt how to put forward ur thoughts appropriately.

I don't think being an IITian ensures you a good GMAT score.
IIT-JEE is quite different from GMAT.
Moreover, sometimes you get nervous in the exam, being a computerized one, and lose your temperament.

Another thought on this one. Did you get any feedback on what was missing last time around? Your GMAT does not seem to be abysmally low; do a ding analysis and make sure you understand what was the un-doing in the first outing and only then take the plunge. For all you know, it might be average essays, i/v or some such factor. With your profile, one could think of pushing the GMAT score but offcourse only after you've made a fair assessment of the situation.

Although going by their admission brochure, it does show 'zero' accepted applicants with sub 600 score. Thus, I really needed this shot and have registered for GMAT once again by end of this month. Hope to make the cut this time. Rest pl let me know any more thoughts I could work up to.

I wouldnt say its a marketing strategy , but a strategy to try and keep as much parity in applications in R1 & R2 as is possible.

Imagine if the admissions director comes out to say that R1 seats will be fewer than R2 .. wouldnt that drive a lot of applicants planning to Apply in R1 to wait for R2 ?

or if the Admissions director says that there are fewer applications in R1 wouldn't that drive people to rush applications in R1 to enhance their chance ?

so i am not surprised that the admissions director maintains a neural stance but ultimately they have to make the entire process as just as possible, so if they see fewer applications in R1 and hope for better candidates in R2 they are well within their rights to reduce the offers in R1 , announce a long waitlist and then scan R2 applications ... if their presumption doesnt come true they can always go back and offer seats to the waitlisted R1 applciants .

I totally agree that ISB does not need marketing efforts to lure students inside India. However, a constant effort is required just to ensure best quality people inside the school.
Again, "GOOD" is a very subjective term...
I have seen people rejecting ISB coz they got invites from other top B-Schools.

There is a market of B-Schools and you need to be competitive in every aspect to ensure best results.

Thank you guys for your valuable suggestions. Here is my course of action accordingly:-

1. Applying with my poor GMAT score :-(.

2. Nonetheless, I will retake GMAT which may be handy in case I get short-listed :shock:.

3. In the mean time, I will ping adcom on this.

4. I am not sure but I guess that even an admission with 640, though a distant reality, may take a toll on my placement.

Lessons that I have learnt: Don't be overconfident in life when everything is going perfect and don't leave something for the last moment though hard to avoid unless u r highly methodical

I kind of feel the same as what you have written Sandeep.

For what its worth, even companies like mine do this when having mass recruitment events. I understand that companies and colleges are vastly different entities, but I feel that recruitment thought-process would be similar in this regard.

"Essay 4) This essay needs a demonstration of the need for scholarship. While need is a criteria for scholarship, the scholarship will be awarded to those who are eligible for it. You will need to show how you are eligible for a scholarship by mentioning what is that you have done to date that is a very big achievement and has come under social or financial pressure of your life."

By now I'm sure you;ve realized, people on PG like to speculate. You;ve given them last years data, so now they will argue about how this year it might be different.

Speculation is a way of killing time for a lot of people, albeit an annoying way of killin time, i doubt ppl will stop.

5:1 might not be the case this year as R1 applicants are close to 1400 , it would mean 1250 Interview calls , which is surely not the case. Last year there were around 1700 applciants so that ratio (5:1) makes sense

what i have gathered from a few people in ISB is -

- There might be a reduction in overall intake (no chance of increase)
- International applicants will be around 5 - 10 % ( Inc PIO with intl passports)
- Typically in R1 number of offers are fewer with a longer wait list

*In no case there can be 280 offers , at max i will peg it to 250 ...
*My estimates as per the Interview patterns for R1 is for around 750 interview calls ( 3 full weekends in Hyd - (3X120) 1 in Delhi (120) , 0.5 in Kol (60) + Miscellaneous non weekend Interviews (100) + Intl (100) )
* Ratio should be 1:3

Some people might still comment on this logical way of coming to numbers as speculation :)

As a B school u pick the batch based on wats available to u (R1 applicants) and not in anticipation or past experience that R2 will bring more and better applicants. What if this never happens..what if ppl planning to apply in R2 get through better univ.

B school see early applicants as ppl committed to join that school and its an advantage....U always pick people for whom u are not a back up plan...

again i m not giving advantage to R1 applicants(as compared to ur argument where u are giving more seats to R2 hypothetical applicants). i am just maintaining equality/

To me, it appears that most of the applicants apply in R2. Many of my known ones, who have good/extraordinary profiles, have not applied for R1. They are applying for foreign univs and if ditched, will apply for ISB R2.
ISB would not be unaware of this fact. This must be the trend for every year. Based on this observation, number of seats for R1 shall be somewhere near to 230. Hence, the no. of i/vs shall be around 850-900.
Disclaimer: The above figures are purely hypothetical and do not tend to hurt anyone's sentiments. If I were running a B-School, I would have operated in the fashion stated above.

To me, it appears that most of the applicants apply in R2. Many of my known ones, who have good/extraordinary profiles, have not applied for R1. They are applying for foreign univs and if ditched, will apply for ISB R2.
ISB would not be unaware of this fact. This must be the trend for every year. Based on this observation, number of seats for R1 shall be somewhere near to 230. Hence, the no. of i/vs shall be around 850-900.
Disclaimer: The above figures are purely hypothetical and do not tend to hurt anyone's sentiments. If I were running a B-School, I would have operated in the fashion stated above.

I had asked an alum and he had mentioned that R1:R2 is 2:3. i.e. 40% intake in R1.

I doubt on your figure of 280 seats for R1.
I believe ISB will not be giving 50:50 invites for both rounds.

I was going through the last year ISB thread and for R2 the results were supposed to be out on or before 15th Feb and the results were out on 12th, which was Friday.

Even the R1 results were announced on a Friday. So am placing my bets on this Friday , the 12th, being the D- Day.

yar there was a F2F i/v scheduled today at hyd( this was posted on PG also by the applicant who got the call)

Ab agar aaj tak F2F interview chali to kya pta there might be two or three candidates for tomorrow also(kuch pta nai hai yar).

Even i hope that this is The Week, dont want to enter the weekend without results :)

It was 1:3 till last year. Don't know how it is gng to be this year .
