I am a 2013-14 aspirant, new to PagalGuy.
I am a engineer from a top 10 engg college in India.
GMAT:700
Work exp.: Sales and marketting, business developement, now consulting: 8yrs. (product related to construction, mining and power inductry)
International exposure: Limited (about 50 days), visit to US and Europe for training, meeting and exhibitions.

I think International exposure should be more important to IT and Technology guys as Indian IT industry is mostly dependent on International projects, while traditional industries like Oil & gas, mining, metals, cement, power, FMCG, Agri, has a stronger base and consumption in India.

I will request if any IIMA PGPX admit can throw some light in view of his mates in IIMA.

Statistically GMAT scores are going higher every year with this year's average being 717.. It is recommended to be within 30 points of the average. Anything less than 690 can hurt your chances.

i am planning for PGPX -14 and planning to appear for GMAT in May 12 for the same.
My profile details are as follows:
Will be 67 months experience (5+ years) on Feb'13, in which having 45 months of international experience.
I am a Civil Engineer, B.Tech. NIT Bhopal. Have a GGPA of 8.13/10.
In 12th 77% and in 10th Class 85%.
I was the President of some societies at college level and at Bhopal level.
Have worked in the largest construction company in Kuwait for 3 years and now working with a US based Fortune 500 company dealing in Project management Consultancy in Construction Sector in India and the world.
What are my chances to make it through if i get a GMAT score of nearly 660-690?

Currently working as a Manager in IT company
GMAT: 710 (awaiting AWA)
Would have 9.5 years of experience by April 2013 with close to 2 years of onsite experience (US and little Europe).
10th: 81%
12th: 74%
Graduation: B.E from Mumbai university: 65%
One technical certification
No awards but little extra curricular activities. How good are my chances of getting into IIMA PGP class of 2013-2014?
is it really so important to have NGO or social service experience?
Are all profiles in IIMA special? Is there really no space for normal profiles?

You may be able to get into Management Consulting after the PGPX program it that is what you desire. I also think you have a very attractive profile for PGPX. However, I have also seen some folks become AVPs at Goldman Sachs, etc after this program. Do your research and think it through. Good luck.

As per me, it makes sense financially too.Aside from changing your domain (no financial incentive here though), you can actually make up for your 1 year pay over the next 5 years.

Have you tried applying to IIMA/B/C already?
Is the program in Duke full time or Part-time/Executive?
The choice of school would somehow depend on where you want to work after the MBA - India or USA.

Just done with my GMAT and I think I scored well (750, Q51,V40, AWA 5.0). Have work experience of around 11 years (mostly in IT). I have worked in different domains (Banking, ENergy, Telecom, Pharma), have good international experience and have stayed in US for couple of years. I have decent scores at school and college level. Not much involvement in extra curricular activities, except for participation in couple of competitions. I am targetting PGPX at IIM A. Based on this, what are my chances?

While researching the profiles of ex students of IIM executive programs,I observed that most of them had a prior working experience in Well known firms such as Infosys ,TCS ,Delloite etc.Do the aspirants from the lesser known consulting firms have a hard time?How much weightage is given to the Clients served?

10th: 88%
12th : 77%
Mech Engg : 77%
Total Exp : 7 yrs, IT telecom
International Exposure: None, if you dont count working for a foreign client for 2 yrs

ALthough I played games at college level, did some editing for our college magazine and have won few painting/cooking competitions, I am not sure all this counts as extra curricular when it comes to MBA applications. Could you please tell me, what kind of extra currcular activites do they look for in a candidate.

Rahul, my understanding of international experience is that you need to be overseas to gain it.
Last year the form was available in April, but you may send an email to the PGPX office to find out.

So is experience in Technology Product R&D; in a foreign company treated as "International Experience"? Note that though the interaction with various people, exposure to technology usage scenarios are broader in nature for this kind of a profile, the entire work done is inland. So is such experience considered "international"?

When is IIMA planning to open the gates for this year's PGPX?

I am Rahul and I am in that routine bunch of IT folks seeking a management education. Formerly, as a pure arrogant technology-is-supreme-minded guy, I disregarded management as a special field of study but of late, I am discovering that some ideas I have on applying recent technical trends to practical areas cannot be realized, if my attitude to management did not change. I must confess that I stand corrected, after a significant amount of research on what happens in the top rungs of technology industry, how business decisions are drawn and influenced and what is taught by these schools.

I have about 13 years of experience in top technology product companies' Indian research and development departments. A reasonably good (just a tad higher than first class grades) education profile, including a post graduation in Physics from the coveted University of Hyderabad completes my description.

I applied for the ISB in 2011 but did not make it perhaps because I took the essays too easy. I composed them in extreme urgency three days, without really appreciating the role they play in the admn process. I repent being slipshod, at leisure now.

That forms an elaborate background for this post. I wanted to know how I can avoid making exactly the same mistake as I did with ISB. I am not a school-fanatic so it does not matter to me where the relevant exposure and education come from, as long as I am part of the school that has its credentials established. ISB and IIMA certainly fall in that gamut.

So now, what kind of information would IIMA application ask me about the aspirations behind the MBA entry? Where would I need to mention that I have lucrative ideas around technical applications of Amazon EC2 or the Google cloud? If this information is not sought for, then how does the school evaluate the profile? Just on the basis of the education so far, the extra-curriculars and current job?

How should I draft my essays this time over? When should I start? Would an exact 700 (6.0) on GMAT (AWA) be a set-back?

the application form has a full section on international exposure so it is definitely a key area. if you have limited/no intl experience then make sure you highlight other strong areas of your profile.

Do you have substantial international work ex? Can you do well (730+) in GMAT and work metticulusly towards your application (utilizing your business venture, although that is more of an essay material which doesnt come into picture until you are short listed). Chances may be slim but the application is free, why dont you apply, maybe you'll learn something from it.

Now the thing is i want to do PGPX from IIM Ahmedabad. And my focus is nothing but 'marketing'.

I have heard lot of times that IIM ahmedabad takes people with good academic grades and stellar work experience. Now if my Gmat is in 680-700 range do i stand a chance here?

IF the answer is a strict NO please let me know because i have started my GMAT prep and intend to give the exam in August and need to finalize my target schools in India. I am not interested in going abroad.

This is my first post though I visited this website quite a few times in the past.

Let me start with my background - I have done my pgdbm and have over 7 years of experience in Sales & Marketing. I always had the dream of doing MBA from a top school but it did not turn out to be that way and eventually I ended up doing it from a mediocre college. However, I still have that at the back of my mind to do MBA from top school like IIM A .

I am sure there will be few responses to my message as to why I want to do MBA again. I have quite a few reasons for it but would love to hear from seniors here if it adds value to my career progression

No weightage to 10th and 12th marks.
PMP is okay but will not be a make or break deal in my opinion. No one really knows the exact weightage of GMAT, work ex, international exp and interview but these are all significant ones

International Experience makes the journey a lot easier. Interview will play a major role I imagine.

You fall in the ballpark of what IIMA PGPX admits have. Just make sure you have a 700 or above in GMAT!

First attempt ranker chartered Accountant , Cost Accountant and CMA(USA). 8 Yrs of post qualification experience( excluding 3 years of full-time article-ship with PWC) in M&A;, Valuations and Corporate Strategy with 3 yrs of International experience. I have worked in 24 countries in last 8 year and have loads of Extra curricular.
GMAT Dec 2008 -610 and Sept 2011 -600.

I Don't plan to write again as too busy with work and other committments, . I'm currently earning a tax free salary of USD 90K( Muscat, Oman), so its a huge decision to do a mid- career MBA . I don't intent to do it from B-grade MBA schools and as I plan to settle in India , i will prefer Indian schools. My post MBA goals are to get into indian Market M&A;/ strategy roles.

Do you think with this profile I have a chance to get a interview short list at PGPX. I Haven't seen anyone below 680 getting a call although i believe that profile also plays a major role ,probably not at all in case of IIM A. Don't understand the logic for 680 cut off? Insane to think that people below that can't handle the academic rigor.. To be honest I have spoken to couple of senior faculty at IIM A/B( my dads friends- He is an IIM A alum) and they are encouraging me to apply with this GMAT scores at both institutes

While it is acceptable that your profile is good i believe GMAT does have a say in getting calls in any B-school. I would suggest that you give gmat one more shot after preparing thoroughly because a score of 650+ is achievable given your academic record. You will take a hit in your job but somewhere you have to sacrifice.

IT background

Exp as permanent employee - 7.9 yrs with Tier-1 MNCs & as an IT freelancer/Contractor in UK since 14 months as of now.
Overseas exp 3.7 yrs & still working!!
10th & 12th both are 75%
BSc (Maths Physics Chemistry) 70%
Couple of Technical Certifications

I am planning to take GMAT around May 2012 & aiming for 700+.

My question here is about the nature of my job. IIMA will consider only permanent job holders?? Do we have any freelancer/ IT contractors on board in any of pervious batches?? Spoke with few of my friends and they turned me down.

Please let me know. It became the deciding factor for me now.

Wanted to know if these rankings are for the college as a whole or specifically for the 1 yr course or the 2 year course of IIMA. Also, why we dont have IIMB and IIMC in the list - is it that they are not able to make the cut or that they dont opt for the survey?

Any course to be eligible to participate in the FT Rankings must be in existence at least for the past four years (at least three batches should have already graduated). IIM Bangalore's EPGP course does not meet this criterion. Also, the institute should be AACSB or EQUIS accredited. IIM Calcutta does not meet this criterion. Hopefully IIMB will feature in these rankings from 2013 onwards (incase it participates in the survey).

this is for the PGPX course. their 2-yr program is rated under Masters in Management category. Cant say about the B & C , however IIMC was to participate this year maybe coz the rankings require some minimum number of years of existence before being ranked. IIMA too participated only last year i.e only after 6 yrs and PGPEX is only 5 yr old so maybe we will see it next year.
as for banglore I think it is younger than IIMC one yr program.

This ranking is only for the 1 year PGPX, not the 2 year course.
No idea why B&C; are not there, most probably because they didnt get audited......

I am an aspirant for 2014 class. I thought of starting early with my preparation. I had a look at this forum and some external websites. I understand that we need to provide essays only when we are shortlisted for an interview (rather strange way). Can someone please provide detailed summary of inputs that IIMA asks at the time of application process apart from the personal data. I was just confused as to how they evaluate a candidate before looking at his/her essays.

the pgpx application is a very detailed one, with emphasis on quality of your experience, awards & achievements, extra curricular, international experience and self learning efforts and many other standard things like grades etc. It gives admissions committee a very detailed view of your professional and personal history. Essays are more to know on what you want to gain from the program and how can you, as an individual, contribute to the class. It is unique but i think its ok if it is asked after the 1st hurdle is crossed.
