Prasanna, if you see my previous post, I mentioned there were around 12 candidates who appeared out of 16. Himanshu Joshi didn't turn up.

Subhankar has already updated the numbers in his list of attendees for various interview slots.

I would guess a similar number of candidates would have turned up for 27th afternoon slot as well .... around 10-12 .... waiting to hear from someone from that slot.

hi puys, i m done with my interview today at 10.00 AM. Initially we were asked to write an essay on "are politicians serving their own interest over nation". I was the first one to be interviewed.

Questions that were asked were

1. Tell me about your self.
2. Work profile and change of companies etc.
3. Competitors as I come from paint and chemical background.
4. Then about basketball ( as i have played at national level in basketball and I mentioned that) questions were more about ground and other dimensions.
5. Question about extracurriculars.
6. Forecasting etc as I am from sales and marketing background.
7. Challenges while working.
8. Difference b/w sales and marketing.
9. Why MBA
10.Last question, they asked what according to my recommender are my areas of improvement.

It was in discussion mode and they didnt try to pressurize.
There were 13 candidates against the 18 mentioned on the attendance sheet.

I was asked during I/V if I read Alchemist, which I didnt...but in last 3 days I finished it...and wow what an exciting book...Its like written specially for us puys....and i love this quote from it, which the prof was referring to in his own words "Collaborative capitalism"...Iam sure most of u have read it..others go read it, its inspiring....

Thats a total of 69/99* (dunno how many missed their telecon).....going forward is it 8 or 4 slots in Noida.....4 i/v slots on each day or 2 on each day....

On an avg 6 candidates turn up for i/v....so if its 8 then 48 wud attend more else 24 more....keeping a buffer of 20 people for any surprises, the total shud be 69+48+20=137 or 69+24+20=113...

In either case the probability of the final converts ranges between : 0.36 to 0.44...
and probability of not converting is 0.64 to 0.56.....

as many as 87/63 wud be kept on waitlist/ding status.....until unless they increase total seats to a higher number (which is not going to happen)....Journey from here onwards is going to be the toughest....

Slightest relief - lets say Buffer considered is way to high....:-)

essay topic was "Can growth in software industry solve the unemployment problem in India?"

I agree panel was very friendly.. it was more of a discussion. Till now I've not heard anybody having a stress interview ;)

Here is i/v experience

- tell us something about urself. Here I felt more than my professional career they were more keen to know what I do outside office.
- then some questions on people management, as I had mentioned receiving few awards for people management
1) how will you handle a person with good intelligence but less motivation and a person with less intelligence but high motivation?
2) who is a good people manager? Give us top 5 qualities.
3) what keeps employee motivated? Give us top 3 factors.
- Some question on Nirma, as I've done my graduation from Nirma
Institute. When did Nirma start? Which groups of companies Nirma own? Which are other FMCG companies? I could partially answers the questions, for others I had to say I dont know.
- what is Innovation?what is strategy? (As I had mentioned that we've innovation and strategy group in our organization)
- Last questions, so whats the goal post IPMX?

Overall I felt more than your achievements, they are interested in knowing what kind of a person you are. They will just pick up an interesting story point from your about yourself story and start digging deep into it :)

Regarding additional information section of personal information form, please mention all your hobbies. It seems they are studying that section quite carefully ;-)


Over all I feel, make an interesting story about yourself. Rest is anyways out of your control :)

i had my interview on 22nd @ Bangalore. The essay topic was 'Growth in s/w industry will solve the unemployment problem of India'.
The interview panel had 3 profs in all. All of them were very friendly and never tried to make me stressed at any point of time. But the interview comprised very very general questions, I really wonder how would they judge my candidature with those questions. Overall whether it was good or bad, is something I have no clue.

Also as far as I remember someone said that there wud 2 panels each in morning and afternoon in Noida...which means 4 Batch each day.....2 days....totally 8 Interview sessions instead of 4 interviews....so expect an invite of 8*8=64 people, average of 6 people turning up, which means 48 more....whatever....this just a time pass mathematics....lets not dig deep....lol

I wud suggest provision for atleast 10 people for Teleconference.....ignored the non PGs I guess.....Lets take 10, to be safer......what say puys....

Please read it as "Pros and cons"....

Pros are advantages or good things about something, positive aspects, and cons are the negative aspects or disadvantages.

Niether I know mr. Rajesh nor I want hold brief for him. I just put forward my observation. Though most of his facts are correct. Conclusion derived from facts is not correct. First, let me introduce myself. I was selected for GMP(XLRI-one year programme) in 2008 and PGPEX-IIMC in 2009. But I did not join neither of programme. Not because programmes are bad, because these programmes do suit me after 12 years experience in steel industry (PSU) in operations and maintenance. There are many beneficiary from these course and also there are many who ruin their carrier. After 10/12 years service when you venture into something what ever may be ,it is expected that you check porn and corn of that venture and you should have realistic expectation from that venture. Problem lies in this thought rather than in programme or market value of the programme. Private industries are not bias against ONE YEAR programme. Private industries only concentrate on vale of money. I explain it further for better understanding.



No institute in the world, no programme in the world gives you input which compensate your 10 years work experience in any field. Think about yourself, what you learn in last 10 years in practice (service) ,numbers of pages of the different manuals read, the number of problems you solved and amount of experience sharing done with your seniors and others could be taught or given equivalent input in any programme. Learning in best institute could be at max. prototype learning.

Now if I expect that after one year mba I would be in GM of corporate planning of a steel industry where I have only operations and maintenance experience. I may get a theoretical input of corporate planning during my study in institute. But how could I lead a team where I do not know what exact step they follow, what are forms they use, whom they contact to get relevant information and even not know how the office is manage. The problems for industry to recruit you in lateral potion with very little relevant experience are they have to pay huge salary during your learning time and many HR related problem have to face because you lead a team where team members are more knowledgeable than you. So industries do not recruit you until there is huge shortage of quality manpower in industry. In 2007 Ms. Reliance power started its operations and recruited about 150 MBA. On that year many student were recruited from GMP(XLRI),PGPX and ISB. Ms. Reliance power bear them couple of years still they learn and reinvent themselves.
Now if the people are not placed or nor placed properly after one year mba, whom you blame-are the industries at fault-are programme are bad or you have an unrealistic expectation even after 10/12 years of service.

If you want to change your domain, the best place to do so is your own organization. Then question is why PGPEX OR PG from ISB at the cost of 30L. Many industries you encourage and allow you to migrate from one domain to other if you have basic learning or proto type learning. Though it may not be the case for PSU and government organization. In future these course will be effective out source of internal senior manager training programme.

So please do not jump to conclusion from the mare few facts and respect other and other decisions.

1) Started with, ummm, so you are from Sales an Marketing background...what is the difference between Sales and Marketing yaar- I said Sales is subset of Marketing, its like say Marketing is like identifying a need, say for a cool drink, Sales more about how to sell Coke to the customer, between Pepsi, Mirinda, etc....to be more precise, Marketing is about creating/identifying a need, it is about Product, Pricing, Promotion, Positioning, etc...Sales is the actual selling stage...just one of the activities in the entire Marketing.....

2) u have done ur MBA already, so why 2nd MBA....Sir my 1st MBA was just an Organic progression after my B.Sc., i pursued it like we all pursue 11th after 10th....So to me it was just a theoretical gain in knowledge backed by a Degree certificate...Now I want to actually learn, seek practical knowledge, tools, etc etc...Also practically if I approach to a VC tmmw, though it is not impossible to get a funding (without IIM tag), but practically it becomes easire, lets accept this...he smiled and acknowledged....

2) so what next, after IPMX....

I said it was during peak of stint with ABN AMRO, when I was gaining rewards, accolades, making gud incentives, when I had my 1st calling of Life"....Inspite of all the happiness that I gained by myself for and within myself, I still felt a gap....And whenever I go back to my neighbourhood, meet some of my old friends, acquaintances, I saw many people around me not in a happy state of affair...I introspected that this is same India, where we have at one end advances in any industry you name, and it is yet again the same India where lots and lots of people still knock doors, for their livelihood...
I started feeliong compassionate and slowly I started feeling that I found a reason/purpose of my life....Can I someway contribute for the betterment of people, ofcourse not just by compassion by using my business skills....something in line with Compassionate Capitalism...

3) Then 1 prof interupted...thats a novel thought, have you read the book Alchemist, it talks something in similar line...I said no sir...he backed me by saying that one can use Business to foster inclusive growth, I said "thats exactly where Iam coming to, Sir"....

4) he then smiled and said you stay in Banjara hills in Hyderabad (which is a upmarket) and talking of inclusive growth...

I said yes sir, since I have lived in both worlds, I realise this gap....and I am not being philanthropic here, Iam saying I want to build a an Inclusive growth model, its like say I currently own a Wagon R, and in my endevour to own a BMW, I wud want my fellow workers who were erstwhile either wealking/cycling to move upto their wagonRs.... Irrespective of what happens to this here, I want to see myself being there working on my goals in next 6-7 years..."

5) he was more curious, so I went on, I wud identify the most remotest village which would be backward in terms of Infra, economy, etc...utilise govt subsidies (if any) and start my own Manufacturing set up there, run it successfully, create employment, build infra, try and change the lifestyle and the society....I know it may sound poetic or very passionate and it may sound easy but it needs a force, to contribute to the society at large wud necessarily mean to start with my own Home, I need to balance between my ppl/family and society at large, I need to build confidence, gain knowlege, build network, understand business, and once confident identify financial resources....practically I need a weapon to do all this and am sure IPMX can help me in this journey...."

6) The oldest among the panel now joined in...so what did you do in this endevour of yours in last 10 years: I said I had opportunity to recruit people under me in last 6 years, and I conciously recruited people from OCL- Outside City Limits, ppl of gud talent but who missed opportunties in the competetive world, trained them, got the best productive out of them, and retained them...am sure this has been a positive move for them....

7) Oh, does company allow such recruitments, yes sir...in fact we started calling it OCL recruitments, it also makes business sense, the cost of labour you see....again acknowledged with a smile...

So you are from Hyderabad, what do you think about Si Krishna Committee...I said it is a very controvorsial topic, Telengana movement has been into existence since 1960s, but yes lately gained so much media gimmicks....In those years it was peasants/farmers use to fight with Nizams/Zamindars for their rights...

9) If its peasants who are fighting fo rights then Wud you compare it with Naxalism: No way, how come this be compared to Naxalism...he said ppl are burning buses...I said thats just one of the instances...entire movement's objective is something above burning buses, whereas Naxalism word itself reflects u know....smiled....and uttered unconstitutional....he said- yes I wud say Naxalism follow a completely forceful way of getting to one's rights... I said yes...

All smiled...and then they asked any Qs for us...I asked why they didnt have a Family acco....:-).....

Overall, no major GK, no stress (as per me), lots of smiling and exchange of ideas, etc....

I am thankful that I was not stuck anywhere, and felt comfortable....least bothered even if I get rejected, cos I finished saying whatever I wanted to and felt for...

My job is done...Iam at peace...I can concentrate now on my work.....

went on to some industry experience then towards 3G as I belongs to mobile industry then to Value Added Services in Mobile phones..
Not much of general awareness, last question was tricky...
Developing countries v/s developed countries and Managed v/s non Managed countries...

It was nice meeting with Prasanna, Srinivas and others who were also present same time..

Essay topic - "Long term changes are more stable than radical ones"

My interview was more of a pleasent discussion,
Initially started with few statistics question on Mean, median, std dev and mode (discussion was started with how normal was today's weather outside)
Then started with describe yourself, long term and short term goals, some questions on the understanding of the domain i wirked in and then my SOP was discussed for the values that i had mentioned in it.
Finally what i would bring to OPMS, my strangrhs and weaknesses (Specifically 2 each) and then the interview was over.
I insisted on asking them about the school which they entertained.

Overall.... i dont know how it went for them but for me it was a good experience.
