I am really lost as to what type of topics should i study and what can i expect in the AIM GD.
One more quesiton- Since iam from the marine background can annyone suggest me a trade(General managemment, finance, HR,) that would be most suitable in connection wiith my technnical background.
I have 9 years of work ex. and i am 36.

one of my classmate was a marine engg... he's studyign right now and doing pretty good... as far as i know he wants to major in finance and is pretty near doin that...

i dont know if there is anything specific i can tell u... other than the general gyan.... be urself... be alert... listen and speak sensible...

be aware of bullshit that sometimes happen... dont let it grow... or at least dont be part fo any BS... at times u'll find things being talked abt very funny... dont laugh or make fun.. that will most probably get u the EXIT door the fastest...

in GD mostly u'lll be given a case... a situation ... wiht a small story backin it.. and u'll be aksed to analyse... its pretty simple... mostly it will deal with personality issues or crisis situation...

but u should consider all types of option... while answering... financial... etc. etc.

congrats to all shortlisted smarties.... prepare general at gd/pi... the trend i've seen is... they rotate between stress interview and technical interview... but when i had mine... it was a lot of psychological interview.... on the stress side....

abt GD... it should be a piece of cake for those who are prepared... its like every other gd/pi... they only want to see if u can think on the feet and speak knowledgeably.... if ur group or u end up arguing... don't worry... its common and expected.

I have scored 96.6 % in XAT but got only 35 % in VA:confused: ,,wat r my chances from AIM,,do they consider sectional cuttoff......i m having work exp. of 4 years as an ERP functional Consultant.

AIM requires a minimum score of 96% in XAT.
Yes! You can appear for AIMAT but do find out when the next one is from Mumbai Rep office!!

The facts mentioned are so true, and so relevant..........What I find is that NUS, NTU, ISB etc. do lay a lot of emphasis on GMAT and academic records. While I realise that academic records are very important, AIM does allow you to make up for any glitches. Thats whgy the interviews prior to admissions are probably the most important factor when it comes to admisisons for AIM.

The ROI is also fabulous, compared to around 15 laks for AIM vis -a - vis 20(ntu), 26 (NUS) etc.

The case study method is also something where one has to show their managerial skills, and not plain and simple bookish knowledge.

But, if theres a stumbling block, it has to be its placement assistance, the scenario is pretty bad when it comes to AIM's placements.

I am relatively old MBA from AIM (2005 grad) and it is interesting to see how the program has eveolved (2 batches, 16 months etc..which are a departure from the 24 month program we had)...but a few things I really liked about the MBA vs. other choices people have..ISB, NUS, HKUST etc etc etc..

1. Return on Investment is extremely high if you join the financial services industry even in India (particularly I banking)..though these days u may even be fired.. AIM still has a good name in finance vs. ISB, NUS etc..both schools are also very region or India focused with little case interface...I have worked with both ISB grads including recruiting them and found that ISB standards have slipped...my previous organization has stopped visiting the campus..(could be for other reasons as well)...NUS is good only if you want to work in Singapore..which is a "fine" city

2. RoI is only possible if you network feverishly and pursue all leads including cold calling..I think i worte like 200+ cold emails and another 50-60 calls and followup (I wanted to pursue Private equity which was still small in 2005) and I was shut out being stuck at the exchange prgram at Wharton..however I did get 2 job offers at PE firms...(another story why I dropped them both)...a lot of students also camp in Singapore for a cpl of months

3. Leverage alumni especially in Singapore etc though they CANNOT guarantee you jobs...most are very hospitable etc and help the students who camp in Singapore

4. Have fun..fun factor is probably the highest in Manila..the people..women..places..food (if you like to experiment)..cheap booze/cigs etc..make it a great place to party cheap..i used to party almost 4 nights a week on a meagre budget..the city also has a lot of sightseeing, culture and arts which you can spend time on..Hyderabad (so small) and Singapre (so formal and expensive) are no match..afterall you do need to live?

5. Exchange programs..including Tuck , wharton, etc are amazing...I will always cherish that..though it does screw up ur placement a bit...ISB and NUS still dont have that reach..though visiting Profs at ISB are a boon...

6. Learning..which is much more practical and situation oriented at AIM..i loved the case method..if you can present and articulate yourself at AIM..it helps rather than being a nerdy topper at any other B School where you cannot articulate yur plans in front of a board..there is also time to pursue academic execellence by taking the CFA, FRM etc with special classes organised by the institute...

I think 6 points is enough...but my own tale is interesting..I joined with 3.5 yrs years work ex in mostly Internal consulting at a large BPO with some work ex in the US..i joined hoping to specialise in marketing..switched to gen mgmt ..finally was forced into finance and loved it..wanted private equity and ended up as an investment banker...so AIM helps you shape your mind..and give you the stuff that you need everday on the job..
I must have bored you guys with my monologue but feel free to respond with specific questions..
given the current market conditions..i would advise pursuing consulting, risk mgmt, financial restructuring type jobs.. I banks are firing people :)

Marketing is a strong contender in placements with some exciting electives..J&J;, The It companies etc always recuit heavily for Sales/ BD/ Mktng jobs...lots of Alums are working in Marketing in India, Sing etc..so I think it is a salient feature..the amount u end up speaking you can be preety effective in sales/ mktng...

AIM does not take freshers... thtz for sure..
min requirement is 2 yrs..

but there are a few in this year's batch who have less than two.. but their profiles are unique..u hav a good chance if u are non IT and are from core finance..

According to the ad from TOI, here are the following deadlines:
Deadline for requesting application form: Oct. 21, 2008
Deadline for submission of completed applications: Dec. 1, 2008

The date for the AIMAT is on Dec. 7, 2008.

What does requesting an application form mean? .. is it just the download of the pdf/excel from the site?

I think one will have to send the Rs.2500 DD only when submitting completed app form by Dec 1, '08 .. or am I wrong?

Also, whats the process to register for AIMAT.. just the DD I will be sending be enough?

From the typical Indian placement context, AIM is, well... different. :D

Around 30% of our class already has pre-placement offers (some with multiple offers). But I'm pretty confident most of us will get to start nice careers after we graduate this December. :D

1) AIM is a really good college from acads point of view. one college which seriouslly blv in grooming entrepreneurs.
2) When compared to indian B-schools fees,AIM is too good. MDI is now a days charging close to 10lacs whil AIM(13-14 lacs) considering its global value/exposure/international accredition is too good from investment point of view.

whats AIM is bad it is:
1) its placements are veryyyyy bad.... (now i wont agree with u guys if u say that MBA is just for education and placements would follow blah blah...). I would never spend 14 lacs for just QUALITY education and come back home with my resume in my hand.(again its just my opinion)

Its ridiculus to think AIM grads don get jobs.. they need to look for profiles tht they want for a a month... and soon all people r placed..

Max people wid lower exp get campus placed.the higher exp people have more expectations regarding the profile.. so they chose to look for their own and AIM's brand recall is enuf to get u noticed in any crowd of MBAs... I am not promoting AIM but as this thread is for AIM, I am just doing the obvious->sharing info on AIM

well different perceptions... but once u work in the industry for a long time... u will learn to value IP..and knowledge..

if job is ur main concern... i think don do an mba.. do some certifications and u will earn much more.. and the ROI will be much betr..

or do a correspondence mba from IIM... u r much betr off..
u save time.. u save money and u hav ur job.and the certificate ofcourse.. and may be u will get a betr paying job

OK heres the process:
Down load the pdf from the site and fill up the form... AIM has generally 4 essays.. and needs academic and proffesional recos both...

i think applications start from september..
u can apply through GMAT , AIMAT or XAT
AIMAT has a time schedule.. u have to chk the schedule for this year from the website..

send the filled in appli to mumbai representative office in mumbai, the address is available on the website

Firstly I am not getting a commision to promote AIM, I am just sharing info that I collected in my insti research.

Many indians like me are preferring asia as US is risky now. Dont go with the same mindset whn u r choosing an international bschool and an indian school. No international school invests on placemnts. Most intr.bschools manage placements thru their own promoters and their internal customers who look at the bschool for their consulting needs. Indian bschhols on the other hand spend a lot on marketing to beef up placemnts and they inturn charge companies to hire students from campuses. In india only the profiles offered are taken by students whereas in intr. bschools the college gives u a platform to network by calling executives an alumni to high teas and cocktails.. where u can directly impress and get profiles which are niche and in many cases alumni create a position in their companies to fit in some special talent.

Yes placemnts in AIM is no so good cos the market in phl is not service based.. its more of entrepreneurs. There are phl students who do an mba and then return to their businesses or startup their own. But of late AIM has been abuzz with placement activities as the indian student base has started growing.

And yes that is the website of AIM.
Remember AIM is there for almost 40 yrs now, not because of brash marketing with beefed up placemnt figures but through word of mouth and value added in the long run... period... now make ur own conclusions..
