i've been mailing Yoga excercises to our PG folks since some time, but i felt that every one shud be benefitted by them...... hence a new thread

Yoga provides one of the best means of self-improvement and attaining one's full potential........ it breaks down the stress levels of the body and helps us to maintain a very good health....

It is not at all related to any religion or caste or what ever............. It is all about humanity and love for oneself and society...... :).....

it is all about realising the true inner self

i wud like to quote something i read recently in a website.....

The science of yoga considers thought and mind to be composed of matter: subtle matter, but matter none the less. Through the practice of mental concentration one can enter into the science of yoga. Once adept at this practice one begins to learn to manipulate nature. The usual first step is the stilling and strengthening of body and mind. Once you can still your mind you develop the power, and it is a power like any other, of yogic concentration.

Swami vivekananda says,

The fire of Yoga burns the cage of sin that is around a man. Knowledge becomes purified and Nirvana is directly obtained. From Yoga comes knowledge; know ledge again helps the Yogi. He who combines in himself both Yoga and knowledge, with him the Lord is pleased. Those that practise Mahayoga, either once a day, or twice a day, or thrice, or always, know them to be gods. Yoga is divided into two parts. One is called Abhava, and the other, Mahayoga. Where one's self is meditated upon as zero, and bereft of quality, that is called Abhava. That in which one sees the self as full of bliss and bereft of all impurities, and one with God, is called Mahayoga. The Yogi, by each one, realises his Self. The other Yogas that we read and hear of, do not deserve to be ranked with the excellent Mahayoga in which the Yogi finds himself and the whole universe as God. This is the highest of all Yogas.

Yoga is a vast collection of spiritual techniques and practices all aimed at integrating mind, body and spirit and achieving a state of enlightenment or oneness with the universe........

so, ppl.... i shall post some very powerful yoga exercises for perffffffect health.......

these are all time tested, and absolutely harmless.......

i've been practising them for a while and i cudn't believe....... my head ache is gone....stress levels r down..... errrr...... to put it in one word..... i'm a complete PAGAL now

........

hmmmmmmmmmm, but there r a few rules to be followed while doing them.......

time: can be done at any time of the day..... but preferrably in the morning before breakfast....... one can do it any number of times...... especially when one feels stressed out......... make sure...... u'r stomach is empty bfore doing......

place: on the floor...... a carpet can be used though..... the doors and windows shud be open for fresh air......

silence: maintain absolute silence (difficult though

)

dress: any thing comfortable....

bath: for ppl doing early in the morning, bath isn't compulsory..... but, if at all one takes a hot water bath, one has to wait for 15 mins before doing it....

diet:

...... sad , but true.......... less intake of non-vegetarian foods, spices, and any thing which disturbs the stomach..........
best food wud be raw vegatables

, salads, and vegetarian food with less spice

...... this doesn't mean..... 1 kg fruits, 1 kg rice, etc etc....

the stomach shud be only 3/4ths full........

believe me ppl, the exercises which r going to follow have the power to completely heal probs related to stress like migraine, sinus, stomach problems, intestine problems, etc......................

** some of them might have sinus and one side the nose is always blocked...... bfore doing YOGA, just jog for 10 mins, and find the difference.. :)

NADI SHODAN

A simple centering technique, Nadi Shodan will help clear your mind of distracting thoughts whether you are planning on meditating or just want to relax. Sit upright in as comfortable a position as possible that keeps your spine erect. Hold your right hand near your nose, palm facing you, with your thumb and ring finger curled and the other fingers flattened. Close your eyes and relax. Using your thumb to close your right nostril, inhale slowly and deeply through your left nostril. At the end of your inhalation release your thumb and use your ring finger to close your left nostril; exhale slowly and compleatly through the right. Keep the same posture and breathe in through your right nostril, switching thumb and finger at the end again to breathe out through the left. This is one 'pranayam'--a cycle of twenty pranayams is good for beginners. The pranayam should be done smoothly and gradually, don't hold your breath on the inhale or pause on the exhale--just breathe slowly, deeply, and as one smooth process.

ANULOM-VILOM

A general cleansing technique, Anulom-vilom will help clear your sinuses and nasal passages. The posture and method is the same as Nadi Shodan, with few changes. Exhaling quickly through the left nostril, then inhale quickly and deeply; exhale quickly through the right nostril, then inhale deeply and quickly--this is one pranayam. Continue, alternating nostrils, for fifteen or twenty pranayams.

the second exercise is especially used for healing head aches............. one more thing ppl.......... do them only as long as u feel comfortable..........
the main purpose is to relax......

guyz, i need feedback from all of u........ try them out for the first week........and tell me how u felt..........

i shall post advanced set of exercises then..

U can always do Kapaalbhati and Anulom Vilom Pranayama... it hardly takes 10 mins of u'r time :D

Very true !!
Going one step ahead, 1 hr of yoga in the morning, and 30 mins in the evening wud be much better .
But one shud never exceed one's limits.

The basic course is a 6 day course. You have to find out the timing. It generally starts on Tuesday and ends on Sunday with a lunch.As the name suggests this course is all about how to live your life or shall I say how to live in present.

yes Francesco i did Art Of Living when I was in Mysore. Its too good. Go and experience the joy of Sudarshan Kriya. Nothing can be said about it in words............It has to be felt...........

The nostrils get blocked either due to a major cold, or due to irritation of the nasal lining (The delicate skin inside the nose that surrounds the air passage). In case of a cold, you can do little except wait for it to pass, and eat right (Lotsa fruits and other healthy stuff). But irritation becomes chronic in many people, so that the nose is blocked most of the time. The lining swells slightly and blocks the passage of air, and this swollen clump of skin just up the nose is called a nasal polyp. For a short term fix, do any vigorous exercise that warms you up, like jogging in place (As CATtie/Vijay has said already), or doing a set of push-ups, skipping rope etc. This will open it for long enough for you to do Pranayama.
Another way is to use pranayama itself to unblock the nose. One way is to hold your breath till it starts to get uncomfortable. That usually opens the nose for a short while. But don't do it too much unless you're very sure, and don't inhale or exhale too much before holding the breath, hold it with a normal amount of air inside the lungs. The pranayamas which involve holding the breath are called Kumbhaka in Sanskrit, and you should gradually go up to them, not right away.
Yet another way is to do Bhraamari Pranayama, in this, you inhale, then keeping the mouth closed, hum, just as you hum a song. You should hum somewhat loudly, and the air in your lungs should come out through the nose, with the humming sound. After humming this way for a while, your nose should unblock, unless it's a major blockage.
And this is the easiest and most short-term fix which I found a few years ago. First inhale (through your mouth if necessary). Then with your thumb & forefinger, close your nose, by pressing the nostrils together (As some people do to toddlers when playing with them), so that it's impossible to inhale/exhale. Now try to exhale, so that the air tries to force its way out of your nose. But you've got it completely covered, so the skin of the nose will swell slightly from the inside, just like a car tyre. Maintain this pressure for a short while. The pressure of the air will force the polyp to compress and the air passage will be opened. Now release the nose, and enjoy the breath of fresh air. But it'll block again within a few breaths, so this is a very short term fix, just so you can get the Kapala Bhati or other pranayama started. But this opens even the most severely clogged nose.
As for the alternate blocking & opening of the two nostrils, that's a natural cycle of the human body, and occurs in most people (Me included). There're complicated analyses in the Yoga scriptures on how to use different nostrils to energize yourself or relax, as needed. You shouldn't bother with that too much as long as you can inhale comfortably, through whichever nostril. Once you take the first few breaths of a pranayama, both of them will open, usually.

Anything ya know for the back ?

Hey Vish, this isn't exactly a Yoga exercise, but I've found it very helpful. And back trouble is mostly due to slouching while sitting on a chair, so keep that back ramrod straight, esp the lower back, to avoid most of the trouble. It's hard at first, but I've seen that it's best not to use a chair's back support at all, and sit perfectly straight, a bit ahead of the support, so your back's not touching anything. In effect, we're using the chair as a small table.
All right, the exercise is called Hyperextension, the trouble is, you'll usually need another person to help you with it.
Lie prone on a bed (On your stomach, not your back), such that only your legs are on the bed and your upper body (From the waist up) is hanging in mid-air. This is where you need the partner, s/he needs to sit on your calves/thighs so that you don't tip over and fall on the floor. If you can anchor yourself some other way, like by hooking your heels under something, that's fine too, but it shouldn't put too much strain on your legs.
Now just as you do sit-ups, i.e. raise & lower your upper body from the waist, similarly do a reverse motion, i.e. bend down, so your waist is forming a 90 degree angle, and you're looking under the bed, and then raise yourself up, so you're looking at the floor, and the muscles of your lower back, especially those near your spine, contract (These muscles are called Spinal Erectors.)
Then bend down again, slowly, and raise yourself up again, slowly. Don't do anything with a jerk. We're not used to such a reverse motion, so it'll feel weird at first, but also strangely exhilirating. After a few repetitions (10-20, or what's comfortable), stop. Let your body guide you, don't think of doing a fixed no. of repetitions always.
One very important thing is that you should never go beyond 180 degrees while straightening. i.e. when you raise yourself up, don't go beyond being fully straight, if you raise yourself further, you risk a condition called 'hyperextension of the spine', which is painful, so keep this in mind.
Now get up and walk around for a while. If you did the exercise correctly, your spinal erectors should be feeling pleasantly exhausted and stretched. After a few minutes, do mild stretching exercises, i.e. try to touch your feet, as low as you can go comfortably, hold for a while, then come back up. Then stretch upwards, i.e. reach for the skies, go up on your toes, stretch out your fingers, let your whole body become a taut string. Then relax, you're done for the day. Take some deep breaths if you wish. In fact, deep breathing is always recommended, as everybody reading this thread would already know.

There's another back exercise, but you need special equipment for that, namely, a horizontal rod (or a thin but strong tree branch). If you have any rod like thing on which you do chin-ups (pull-ups), then hang by your hands from the rod, bring your legs up before you, up, up, up, and hook them around the rod, so the backs of your knees are touching the rod, and hooked around the rod. Then cautiously leave your hands and hang upside down, like a monkey. Let your hands hang down limp, relax your whole body. Then if comfortable, bend sideways slightly. Is very good for the back coz gravity, and thus the direction of your body's weight to be borne by the spine, is reversed for a while. So the vertebraeget a sort of rest.
This is hard to do if you've never done it before. In fact, the most probable place you're likely to find a horiz rod is at your neighborhood park, and most ppl would find it silly hanging upside-down in front of other ppl. And if you don't tuck your shirt in, it'll fall over your face, exposing whatever's underneath, so be wary of that.
In general, I don't recommend the second one if you've never done these sorts of upside-down thingy as a kid, and don't have any place to practise in private. In that case, stick to hyperextensions, they're good enough. Very good, in fact.
As for the blocked nose & other thingies, I can tell you plenty, but it's very late and I need to sleep. So look out for it over the next day or so, barring unexpected stuff.
And do post feedback, telling me how it went. I recommend hyperexts. as a general exercise for everyone, not just for those with tweaked backs. And read the instructions & cautions carefully before doing it.

even i have been practising Pranayams since a long time coz i have an asthma problem...but i have one doubt...i m never able to do anulom vilom coz one of my nose is always blocked....(it keeps changing everyday!!)... so its difficult to take in breath with the blockednose...any sugestionon that...

kapalbhati has benefitted me a lot...my breating problem is almost negligble now....by the way if anyone wants to see how actually kapalbhati is done u can see the aastha channel and learn from guru Ramdeo...he does it every morning on tv....

infact, even i have the same problem with nasal congestion......... what u have to do is, begin doing it slowly till the block gets cleared......then go on full pace.......

if that doesn't work, jog for 10 mins till the internal system gets warmed up and the block opens...... now do the alternate nostril breathing...... this worked for me :)

guru ramdev's program is a must watch for all those who r interested in yoga.... the program is cast in aastha between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm... :)

i do shavasana after every gym workout...a reliever and also do some deep breathing in the morning...

Any specific asanas tht wud boost the testosterone levels..cos the more it is ...the more gains at the gym...i heard paschimottasana will rejevenate..is that true and if so ..does it means that it increases the hormones secreted by the seminal galnds?

i think u dont need to stop yoga just for the sake of gym :)........
oye, what asanas were u doing bfore which were burning calories ??

regarding paschimottam asana, it basically helps to stiffen u'r back muscles, and helps in increasing the blood flow to brain.. :)

i'm really not sure about hormones n stuff regarding seminal glands, but shall ask some yoga guru and get back to u :):)....

I was practising yoga for 2 years straight from 1999-2001
then i slowly stopped them to avoid burning more calories as i started bodybuilding..
i do shavasana after every gym workout...a reliever and also do some deep breathing in the morning...
Any specific asanas tht wud boost the test...

Well, i had been practicing Yoga and Pranayam since last one year every morning. In fact i used to teach also...But couldnt continue from last couple of months.
I still manage to do SuryaNamaskar in morning which is the mother...

Yoga has always been a big attraction for me but somehow I phase out because its no fun sitting silent
