moor's last sigh -too good,especially the characterisation of aurora zogoiby,and it's spoofs on indian political scenario....guys also try out shame by salman rushdie.....story based on pakistan political scenario.....but basically inspired by the life of zulfikar ali bhutto.....a must read for all those who liked moor's last sigh or for that matter any of rushdie's novels one of the best lines of the novel goes like this"pakistan,an imagination,that failure of a dreaming mind" or "ppl without a past are ppl without any roots and ppl without any roots are ppl who don't have any future" awesome...do read it....
happy to see salman rushdie being referred too....me thought that not many ppl like him in pg....

Monk who sold his ferrari - Robin Sharma, Philosophy, Requires active readin and open mind to try out his ideas. if you do so, it'll be interesting read. Its hard to get through the start pages but once you do, its very interesting, read based on interest.

You'd understand the book even if you haven't read the Mahabharata, but if you have, then it helps you make the connections and appreciate it even more :smile:

try reading Rajaji's book before you pick up The Great Indian Noivel. That should help...

well even though this query has been answered i will still go ahead,
well puneet if u remember the the moment japanese says it,pi replies thats the same way with god.well that says it all.either u r a believer or ur not.it is for us to look at it.that is to say that the second story happened in reality(that`s wht i believe)but pi chooses to look at it in a differnt way(after all he cud not remeber his mother's face,we know the reason)
and tells the same story to everyone
it is same with believing in god .tahnx to his inclination towards all three religions,we get a brief look at his pyschology...
anyways that is my take on it.

But also, Life of Pi isnt about the climax alone, is it?.....I just loved Pi's views on religion and his becoming an Islamic Christian Hindu , the strong case he put forward for animals liking it in zoos:smile: , and the way they all end up in contributing to his grand experience

Martel wasn't pointing at anything....and thats the beauty of the book, Mr.Khota!:grin: He leaves us with an open-ended book with a finish to be understood completely as per our interpretations......and how we interpret it would tend to define us, is how I feel.........if you believed in the animal story, I would say you're a romantic, with a strong belief in basic human integrity,.....on the other hand, if you think the human story was true, it would show you to be a cynic, a pragmatist, a capitalist,.....If this analysis sounds a little skewed, its 'cause I believed (or wanted to believe) in the animal story!

And its tough talking about this book without comparing it to Hemingway's 'Old Man and the Sea'....both had a few common strains running through them......human emotions, the natural elements, faith and the relationship between the three:smile: ....and of course, both happen to be equally good!

I have hardly read any management books. Have read a lot of fiction though, and am beginning to read philosophy.
I like most Stephen King novels. The problem with horror or thriller movies is that usually visual depiction limits the fear factor. With books, it is different; A moderately good imagination can ensure a good experience. Stephen King exploits this to the fullest.
Crichton rocks. Jurassic Park & The lost world are the fastest novels i have read. The latest one "state of fear" isn't so great but is thought provoking. Something about the greenhouse effect not actually being supported by scientific evidence, inspite of which it has been widely accepted as a fact of life. Tries to show how the politico-legal-media nexus has been responsible for forming wrong beliefs.
Kahlil Gibran writes well, though I don't think many will like such stuff. Check out "The Prophet" & "Spirits Rebellious".
In philosophy, "The History of Western Philosophy" by Will Durant is really good for beginners,
Please tell if there are any intermediate level books that you know of.
If anybody doesn't read "Calvin & Hobbes" please do so. Nothing beats this.
Ayn Rand also makes for good reading, but i guess most of you would already have read her work.
Jhumpa Lahiri writes beautifully. "The namesake" is pretty good. She has a typical "reporter-style" of writing, i mean give the facts and don't give opinions. Apart from that, the issues discussed in the book are something i could identify with.

3. Ramayan and Mahabharat...not ramanand sagar's.

there are many to chose from, the sophisticated ones who lace their plots with subtle references and the all out shockers. take ur pick.

I have read Deception Point .... quite a good read..... of course not as good a The Da Vinci Code but then again nothing can be as good as that book..... quite a good book if u wanna read.....

its quite a good book but not that gud as the Da vinci code. it doesnt have those twists and turns. its quite informative as usual but u kinda make out the culprit quite a while bfore the end.

one more thing is what does dan brown have with robert langdon, he features in both the books and yeah one more thing HOW COME HE MAKES OUT WITH THE LEAD FEMALE OF THE BOOK IN END?

Angels and Demons is a very good book - you will find all the thrill and adrenalin that one associates with a Dan Brown book. It is a very good book. But, having read A&D;, Da Vinci Code, Digital Fortress and Deception Point, I personally feel that DVC is his best work till now. I can't pinpoint why exactly, but it has that element of intrigue that keeps a reader in sway that was not there to the same extent in his other books.... But hey, get hold of Deception Point too! Its a good read...

Also recently i went thru one book which i wanted to rea since long back--LAJJA by Taslima Nasreen --ahem now this book has seen gr8 reviews but frankly speaking i did not find it that much gr8 -- in fact after redaing each word of the first 10 pages i just sort of glimpsed thru the nxt 100--True the book is real sad stor ntragic portrayal n blah blah blah but as a reader u need somethin more grippig i did not find those 100s of examples every chapter that interesting--moreover the plot and the fow of the novel was sleep-inducing......

IMHO, these guys are the best thriller writers that i have read in a long-long time. the theme is usually archeological/related to ancient tribes and their practices. full of pretty good (but useless ) info, these guys manage to weave a web of fact and fiction ; they write stuff which feels like paranormal, but ends up quite believable.

i have read Relic & Cabinet Of Curiosities, both of them great reads. fortunately i have seven more lined up. so i hope this week is not gonna be boring

one more thing..i would like to punch the guy who recommended "Artemis Fowl" as a good read..and even went on to compare it with harry potter. with all respect removed, its one of the trashiest magic books that has ever been my misfortune to read. the storyline sucks..literally. there is no plot whatsoever, the author is confused as to whether portray Artemis as a villain or a hero..or just about anything. the denoument is as interesting as a cut-off lizard's tail. i have heard my cousins making up far superior stories than this.

But hey another goood book is LOVE n LONGING in BOMBAY by VIKRAM CHANDRA ...It is a combiantion of 5 stories namely KAMA , ARTHA , DHARMA ,SHANTI n one more based in mumbai and covering a wide range of emotions--fantabalous book and a gr8 read..The stories are all told bya chap called Subramanian who himself stars in the last one ..go read this one --u will love it!!!!

i recently read JHUMPA LAHIRI`S INTERPERTER OF MALADIES.
too good.it is a collection of short stories.some nine stories in all.bit emotional but lahiri has etched out each character and situation so well that u personally feel the pain....
a must read for all who like more realistic kinda novels(wud put god of small things,life of pi also in the same bracket)....

i am busy wading thru 'A suitable boy' by vikram seth. have got past a third of the 1400 odd pages:wow: , but am hooked! never thought indian authors could write such good books in english,( leaving aside r. k. narayan f course). read this book ppl. its fun.

Just finished reading Harvard Buisness Review on Brand Management..... not a great book..... but a good read none the less as it has some good examples and case studies (they have a case study and a number of big-shots from the world of marketing give their views about it)...... so it maybe helpful for all GD's which are in the form of case studies as the case studies in this book were similar to the ones that we encounter in IIM gd's.............. wanna start Catch-22 as I have heard rave reviews about it... but before that I have to finish The Day After Tomorrow... I am just not getting enough time ...anywaya happy reading to all you guys

soory dude i don't think that there are any special search engines.... atleast not that I am aware of.... most of these link are form simple searches on google....... also when people forward you any e-book th ebook always has the link of the site from which it was downloaded..... so slowly u can gather the name of many such sites all u need is a keen eye and a little effort and of course a great forum like PG i'll keep posting more links as and when i find them ....... happy reading.....

i m extremely sorry but the oxford genie CD-ROM comes with the oxford advance learner's dict ....... i don't think there would be any link from which u kud download it because it is not a freeware and it is more than 250MB.

i got it from my friend so contact ur friends or buy an oxford advance learner's dict..or

by ken follett
a nice fast read,thrilling one.
Has a very nice climax,similar to a hollywood film.

KPax was a cool movie... very touchin too. it certainly helps reading the book after watchin the movie because it helps in conjuring up the world Prot lives in. i loved both the movie and the book:)

yup Mr.Donkey, Life of Pi is extremely well written. moi not so hot abt the plot as abt the language. and i am sure if u enjoyed the book, chasin the monsoon will be a treat:)

And another amazing read(it seems i read only good stuff recently ) was THE LIFE OF PI by YANN MARTEL --a very good book--humorous and informative abbt certain animals and zookeeping as well.... I liked the indian touch--tis rare when a phoren author writes abt INdia....
those books are recommended!!!

The Life Of Pi is a wonderful book...Among my 10 faves...I love the way its written, with little quirky things throughout like how the boy gets his name from a swimming pool in Paris! Its also science-fictionish (esp towards the end with the floating island..) And best of all, it makes you think a lot about life as a whole...Brilliant!

I don't know how I didn't mention this earlier, but have any of you read K-PAX by Gene Brewer? Its about prot, who tells the loony doctor to whom he is referred to, that he is from a planet called K-PAX...And he provides extremely scientific reasons to back his story! The rest of the book is how the doctor tries to find out if prot is telling the truth or not, and how he(prot) influences the patients( and the doctors!) during his stay at the 'mental health facility' (By the way, there is a movie based on the book with Kevin Spacey LIVING the character of prot.In fact, I read the book after watching the movie on HBO, and could visualise prot so much better) Highly recommended!

Also,all those who read detective fiction, I wonder if there are any fans here of Rex Stout..
He's the one who wrote about Nero Wolfe, 'the greatest detective in the free world.'
Wolfe is my second favourite fictional detective(as if I know all the REAL ones) after Sherlock Holmes..He is overweight(weighs a seventh of a tonne according to his confidential secretary and chief baiter Archie Goodwin), is a self confessed gourmet and has an encyclopaedic knowledge of wines. He is also obsessed with Orchids,and grows 10000 varieties in the upper floor of his New York brownstone..But most of all, he is a genius, and has read innumerable books and remembers almost everything he's read..The cases are usually short (a-la most of the Sherlock Holmes stories), and the dialogue between Goodwin and Wolfe is always a delight..A must read for every Holmes fan!

PS: i enjoy reading books on my comp because everytime i encounter a unknown word i don't hav to waste time finding it in dict ...jus point your cursor on the word ....and oxford genie will show u its meaning.

moi also don't like reading books on pc but that
thing the unknown word makes me to read on comp.

Recently i read two books by Ashok K banker

1) Prince of ayodhya
2) siege at mithila

it is a seven part series of story of ramayana . well you may what so interesting about ramayana . everybody know the story .. but the books are really interesting . it moves like a thriller and the way banker writes it its really good .

i would definitley recommend them

another good one is

vernon god little .. by dbc pierre , booker prize 2003

but as i have not finished it yet i wouldnt be able to offer any substantial views on it , but highly entertaining till now
