coming to my experience, i myself have a bit of interest in astrology and that's why i was amazed on hearing about this technique for the first time...that was about 10 years ago when my dad got his predictions made and simultaneously some predictions about me were also made in the audio cassette recorded in front of him...
(for all people who think this is a new thing or are not able to believe in it, I'd like to tell that there is a book named BHRIGUSAMHITA written by rishi Bhrigu centuries ago, which contains the complete janam kundali described for every human who has born, who is living and who will be born)
recently i went to a nadi astrologer in dehradun just to know how they do this thing...
he told the reason for taking the thumb impression...
the old leaves are indexed using the thumb impression types (like a primary key of a database) which are 108 in total number...
that means whenever you give your thumb impression for reading, they will first classify that impression into one of those 108 primary key and then onwards start looking for the relevant stack of leaves...
then they ask many questions about your name initials (which are like "does your name start with "R" or "S", you just have to answer yes or no and nothing else)...
on the basis of this filtering criteria, they try to match the exact leaf, and read the entire initial information like fathers name, mothers name, siblings name, spouse name etc...
if one thinks that the info is not correct, one must tell him and he will try to find the other leaf...
in many cases they are not able to find the leaves for a person, that doesn't mean the person has no record of his existence in that text, its just that the person's leaf is at a place somewhere else...and some other reader is having that complete record...
talking about the authenticity, i believe that they are authentic, because my own experience about my father's readings tell that in the past 10 years the major things which have happened, had been recorded in the audio cassette at that time...
so on listening to the cassette today, one realises that 90% of the things predicted were true...
when i met him, i asked him about the accuracy of the predictions...
he said that it varies from 70% to 90% and the variation is because of the fact that the leaves had been written in a language, very few scholars can comprehend today...
so the accuracy decreases just because of the little bit vague interpretation of the text written on the leaves...
also, in the past 3-4 years, there has been a commercial angle added to this science....
when one gets a prediction done, the predictor will include somewhere in the middle that the present life is going good but all the hardships one is facing is due to some past lives sins committed by the individual...
those sins will lead to a major accident, lack of success and other unfavorable things...BUT...it can be corrected if one does the puja specified in the further chapters of the text itself...
to get those chapters you have to shell out more money, and as the texts have been written by Rishi Agastya (in south India) all the puja methods are related to temples in south India itself...
the methods are sometimes quite rigorous such as a 6 month yagya and other long rituals which only a Bal Brahmchari can perform...
so these are some money making ways being used these days by nadi astrologers...
but all in all I'd say that it is an amazing experience when you get all your details on a thousand year old leaf written accurately by a saint at that time...
