Athletics in India is the field least attended to. There are so many people in our country who are naturally good at some or the other athletic game but are not encouraged. India has seen several runners, weightlifters, swimmers and very recently, even boxers, who have won accolades abroad, but unfortunately remain unsung in their own homeland. It is not sufficient that they be awarded for their achievements but, it is important that many more who look up to these men and women as their ideals, be provided with apt facilities to hone their skills. That, I believe , would be a real tribute. It is unfortunate that the government is not taking up this issue seriously. Recently when Vijendra Kumar won a bronze medal in the Beijing Olympics 2008 for boxing, he said, in an interview, that they used to practice in a village akhada and were not provided any sort of facilities by the state. Another piece of news said that a girl from a certain village started practicing shooting more vigorously after she saw Abhinav Bindra win a gold medal in the same Olympics of 2008. Yet again the state failed to provide any sort of help to the girl. Such is the sorry state of athletics in our country.
Lack of proper infrastructural facilities and funding is leading to the decay of athletics in India. People who wish to become athletes are discouraged due to a lack of future in this field. As a result the country misses out on several talented athletes. Perhaps, if the government could put in a little more effort and interest in improving this field, we may find global icons in our country itself. Now, with the Commonwealth Games approaching, this is the apt time to put more emphasis on this issue. Instead of investing into funds for improving the state infrastructure if a little was put into improving the athletics' infrastructure, we may win some medals as well, apart from appreciation for beautifying the city. For, one thing that we can be sure of is that-India's sure got talent.

I have some kinda doubts about my understanding of this question.. still try my best to be in sync with the actual meaning..

What we under rate?? Means what is that we dont appreciate/acknowledge much inspite of it being there well above the desired or prescribed level...

I feel its our democratic system and some of our institutions... we dont appreciate much the democratic procedures that are there in our system.. We have got one of the best democratic systems of the world.. Its second to none. Sometimes i cant stop but admire how in a short span of time we have swiftly made progress in various areas..
Its not perfect , not even close to it.. But we are working hard to reach that level. And this effort of ours should not cease because of the failures we experience , nor should it halt because some of our collegues in this system have motives which are not suited to masses.
We should learn from our experiences and others too.. But not try to emulate some other systems or compare /criticise ours..infact it should be continious self evaluation and upgradation process based on our needs..


The biggest threat in future will not be caused by outsiders but by our internal growing indifferences.. And there is only one way to culminate this threat , to make everyone part of this system and make them belive that its not only for, but because of each one of us..AND it should be visible ..I am a firm beliver of our system..and i have full faith that together we will flourish...

Yes I too strongly believe that Entrepreneurship should be promoted in INDIA.It is said that among all the developed nations of the world there is one thing common that atleast one generation of that country focused on Entrepreneurship. There are many of us who have a dream and innovative ideas to setup an enterprise.But we have a fear of losing the game.
Actually I would blame the upbringing of the society for it.We work hard from 1st standard till our UG/PG leave no stone unturned to get admission among the best colleges of the country but at the end of the day would opt for a well paying job + some satisfaction which would satisfy our family.Most of the families force their lads to opt for Gov jobs to secure the future.I mean all of us want future to be secure but is this the way we should be moving ahead ?

The thread is rightly named INDIAN YOUTH - The Future of India. 54% of the Indian population is below 25 years(Source:India Today) - A fact other countries should fear about us.

It is rightly said be the change you want to see and the world will change for you! Now seeing India as a developed Nation is a dream in the eyes of us. I'm sure we'll realize our dream one day.

We are definitely moving towards the upper end. Indian firms have bought 866 firms from US and UK in the past decade. An evidence enough to confirm the fears of the Developed Nations.

I Strongly feel:

1. Brave Indian Youth stepping in to Politics
   
2. Young Indian Entreprenuers
   
3. Great Indian Scientist unwilling to cross borders
   

Are the key points that will keep us on the top of the world. I'm ready for the first two points. (Am not a scientist so i can't help with the third)

My frnd I would like to share that I have cross questioned about above mentioned topic to myself manytimes but what I will say is that we turn to take initiatives nd participations in these activities only if we had already made up our mind to do it.If I attended Teach India, registred for it wen I was on a trip to Uttrakhand and my frnd called me "Akshat, u hav a noppurnity ...I immediately said dont think twice register me for it". I did it was only bcoz I had it somewhere in my mind that I want something to do like this for society.I think it really comes from your heart.Forget about it as a career or adding it to your resume.
How many of us dont waste water ?
How many of us avoid using polybags, even after knowing its effects?
How many of us prefer using public to private transport?(i know it is always possible)
How many of us do throw waste in dustbin only, after having picnic bash in public parks?
the list goes on n on yaar...
Do we really need to join n NGO for it?
There r many steps being taken like I see banners about "To switch off the ignition on red lights to save 20% fuel". Do we need anyone to tell it to us that they r pointing to us only or do we need to achieve our goals(which will never end)first nd then follow it?

So I think If we say youth has potential then we need to prove it.The steps r to be taken from very basic level.And yes we need to make aware of these basic steps to our younger brothers and sisters.

HAVE YOU JOINED ANY NGO, tell us what is it helping people or environment in and what are your contributions till now?

I work in Amdocs , though company deals with many social projects but I am very much connected with its ALAMB one. We are going a step by step approach for this. some of key steps taken are :-
1. First, as earlier there were issues like lack of proper education , teachers , books , student drop out rate etc. For this we convert there one big hall to a integrated class room , with good teachers , students with books etc, and a miny library.
2.To verify everything goes properly we used take tests on surprise tests of students and 2-4 times of teachers also. this particular activity always comprises me.
3. we also conduct such programes that desire to get educated arises with in student itself.
4. since there are grown ups also , we try to provide them some vocational trainings through private-public venture.
5. Setting up of a small computer lab is in process through donation of some old computers by various people.

On teaching class 10 biology ,I find out that their basic concepts are not clear and many of them haven't got proper education in their junior classes much because of irregular & improper teaching environment they have been. Because of these they either try to mug up or try to escape from studies because of lack of basic fundamentals.This I believe is main reason for these students to not have a keen interest in studies . So nowadays we are much focusing on this issue.

Before ALAMB, earlier also I used to help less fortunate kids but that mostly remains in terms of monetory or infrastruture help. But here after really engaging in this, i figure out there are much more bigger & complex issues than just funding issues.

Well I would like to comment something on this topic..

My motives behind joining an NGO were three:
1) TO add in resume.
2) Since my school days I was intrested in social activities.

So I learnt that it is not that easy to think of solutions to such kinda problems.If we are really serious for helping India then we have to delve in the problem, its cause, its surrounding.Boz what i have experienced many a times we suggest such solutions to a problem which have completely no link wid it just bcoz we have not actually felt it.
AND yes last but not the least I have observed some ground realities of the NGOs so called Non Profit Organization running in our country...

first of all kudos to u. U wanted to do something and u took the gud initiative, it's simply wonderful. I went thru ur post and want to add some points to it and will also try to explain some dilemmas u have faced in this journey.

1. U want to do something, dont expect any help and support from anyone!! if u get some support, it will b gud, but u shudnt expect it... (m saying this in relation to the NGOs)

2. Yes, many NGOs r indulged in profit making and want to milk the government in the name of social service...i want to tell u a short incident..
last year my uncle visited me and he told me abt the NGO he has recently started. and his statement was something like this "yaar, mujhe to iss line k baare me to pata hi nahi tha, varna me to kabse isme paisa laga deta....itna profit to aajkal koi company nahi deti hai jitna ki ek NGO se aadmi kama sakta hai"
well it sounds pathetic, but its true...

3. U want to do social service, its very gud....i appreciate it a lot...
but dude i will give u one piece of advice....take urself to such level that u dont require anybodys help to fulfill ur dreams...
then only ur dreams will not b compromised and u will get that satisfaction for which u r luking for....!!!

I belong to a small district in UP and I did my schooling from a missionary college St. Don Bosco Senior Secondary School. In my school there were evening classes arranged for poor students I mean belonging to slum areas of adjoining area.Some of the students were even working to earn a meagre income of help there families and in evening attend school.The Fee mere just 60 Rs/- a month and facilities ranging from school dress ,books, excellent school campus which includes placeground canteen n all.And yes my residence was near my school only.So the consequence of this initiative of my school was that if I am not wrong I cant figureout a single child from those families who was not going to school.As my school was one of the best in my city, so the children had a great enthu in them to study in this school and njoy all that facilities which they were not nnjoying outside due to there financial conditions.Also there parents were very happy by this initiative of the school.
And the best part of this was that I participated in an activity organized for week by my school to volunteer some some students from there regular school to teach in evening classes.

Now my this experience always drived me crazy to think on social issues and take part wen ever i got a chance.
So after my graduation I joined an NGO through TeachIndia.This NGO too works on educating children from slum areas,although the facilities are not similar to my school but yes they are provided some.When I went for Teach India I was astonished to see the crowd turned and was wondering how will they accumulate this no. But they told that initially many participate but slowly all quit do many reasons (I dnt want to discuss)

So from my experience of these activities i would like to highlight some of the key issues (according to me):
1) Those students were facing problem of discontinuity in there studies.Like many were those who have resumed studies after 2yrs, 3yrs and sometimes more.
2) The class comprises of students of varying ages .I mean in general schools the age of class is almost same ,but there the case is diffrent.So there is difficulty in handling the class.
3) In these schools the board affiliated is generally NOS. And due to insufficient funds the students are facing problem of books and other study material.
I was shocked wen the teachers in school dont me that they dont have books alloted to them and they are taught generally by teachers and students take notes.(I mean how can maths be solved widout books?How can they believe that studnts are taking notes and they will record it for future?Even 1oth grade students were not alloted books and they were wating for books to be alloted in september.Will you believe I taught 9th grade students, how to take LCM,HCF,add two fractions,profit loss?

our government implemented a scheme called "MID DAY MEAL '
principle of scheme was "parents ll send their offsprings to school as ll get one time cooked meal there "
i appriciate that but implementation was not proper and not monitered.as children going school with sole purpose of taking the meal not the knowledge.n so is about their guardians.
in my opinion there should be scholarships from the very beginning for students coming regular..
guadians should be made aware of benefits of education.n there should be various competitions in all activities within a distict for all primary schools..
but again implementation should be proper n regularly monitered..

On the education front, we need to take some lessons from Cuba. in spite of all the resistance they faced from the US, they have kept their education system on track and its one among the best education systems in the world.
just for info. sake i will like to tell everyone that in Cuba education is free for everyone from Playschool to PhD. and also quoting the figures of 2004 survey, it had 100% literacy for both genders.
i will not suggest such a drastic change in education policy but still the government needs to make education free and compulsory for everyone at least till 10th.This will help in making some well needed changes in the society.
i know this kind of move will have some -ve effects on the financial deficit of the country but in the long term it will b worth and we can earn in future more than we need to spend now..!!!

thats our uniqueness.....our country is amalgamation of so many religions and still we manage everything notwithstanding the politics of religion played by many major politicians....
our country has so many different dimensions that u can never understand it while thinking of just one perspective. we people dont have to go to other countries to see change..but we just have to have a 100 km ride on our bike/car and we will find ourselves in an entirely new place....

The rich culture, unity in diversity and immense knowledge that is available within our culture really appeal to me. India should be proud of talent that we have in our country. Immense potential!
But I do have certain issues. I do have issues with our Democracy. I often wonder whether we deserve to be a part of the World's Largest Democracy. Most of the people don't understand the true nature of democracy. What they understand is freedom of speech, expression, media without even considering the responsibilities that come with it. I think the basic problem is that we people are not responsible enough.
I do have issues with Law/ Rule enforcing agencies. To say they all are corrupt won't be right judgement. They need to understand their relevance in today's context rather than 20-30 years back.
And I do have some problems with caste / vote politics.

Do you think it was and is right to keep Ajmal Kasab alive and not punishing him by hanging him to death?

Heard our Home Minister P Chidambram's interview on 26/11. He made a very valid point. It is only because of Kasab's presence and his confession in our Poilce custody, that Pakistan has begun to take some action against the culprits. It would have been very easy to deny any claims for the Pakistan government there, had Kasab been dead. He serves a vital link for all the information. We might need his confessions against all culprits.

I believe we even dont need to argue over deeds of persons like Thackerays. They are nothing but a typical politicians . They have even not spare Amithabh & Sachin. Officers guarding Maharashtra from every possible terrorist attacks are from every part of India. they havnt turn their back from fighting terrorist stating its a local mumbai matter. If MNS/Shivsena are really worried about Maharashtra then they should go to areas like vidharba and prevent farmers from commiting suicide because of acute proverty & debt.

These kind of attack arises because of economic imbalances between regions which are exploited by politicians. Infact these attacks are nothing different from attacks on Indians in Australia , Dubai etc. So whenever there is migration of people from low to high economic activity areas, there always arises resentment among locals of high economic areas because of more competition from migrated labour.
I think more we have polorisation of wealth , more such problems bound to occur.

One of my "Mumbai" friends once stated "Please let us love our Mumbai" on witnessing how states image is being maligned by creating unnecessary troubles & tension causing destruction to public property or death of innocent people.

I opened this thread expecting public views on Kasab rather I found total knock-jhonk on what to discuss. Somewhere in this thread I read a moderator vouching for multiple question simultaneously on this thread. In the current page itself (page 3) I have already found as many Question as posts. This is totally messed up. So clearly is not a way to discuss. Its simply so confusing to handle too many topics simultaneously.

@Mods/Thread Owner/Puys, either discuss one topic for certain time frame or open seperate threads for seperate topics.Till now like most of govt policies this thread is going no where.

My take-- Take time frame of 1 week say Sun to Sat & then discuss main headliness of those weeks related to issues faced by India. At the end of every week say here Saturday Mods or Thread Owner would post conclusion/summary of the discussion done on those issues. For ex : one of Question posted in this thread is "What do puys think must be done to increase our literacy rate in the rural areas??" For this Question at the end of week one can list down all possible & practical ways which we/govt should do inc literacy rates.

aftr all evry 1 is diffrnt and so are his/her thoughts...lets respect the comments and views of others and try to come up with some practical solutions (every week) to watevr problems we discuss which we can actually apply and who knws we might bring in the change we want to...

we talk about egalitarian society and still we have to grapple with jingoism on a daily basis...
i have spent major part of my life in MP(madhya pradesh) and have always seen people of all culture and religion together. i know that MP is not that developed and all but still it accepts every Indian with same vigour.

although the nature of prevalent jingoism is clear to everybody, i still want to point out certain things...
1. Y does not knowing the native language of a state(read maharashtrian) makes a person an object of contempt and inferiority in the state???

2. hoe does so many regional parties which indulge in grave violence and want the country divided, enjoy such popularity in the state???

3.wat does a native youth of maharashtra think about the status quo???

P.S. i live in AP now and dont know a bit about telugu but still have not felt any problem watsoever in this state...

I opened this thread expecting public views on Kasab rather I found total knock-jhonk on what to discuss. Somewhere in this thread I read a moderator vouching for multiple question simultaneously on this thread. In the current page itself (page 3) I have already found as many Question as posts. This is totally messed up. So clearly is not a way to discuss. Its simply so confusing to handle too many topics simultaneously.

@Mods/Thread Owner/Puys, either discuss one topic for certain time frame or open seperate threads for seperate topics.Till now like most of govt policies this thread is going no where.

My take-- Take time frame of 1 week say Sun to Sat & then discuss main headliness of those weeks related to issues faced by India. At the end of every week say here Saturday Mods or Thread Owner would post conclusion/summary of the discussion done on those issues. For ex : one of Question posted in this thread is "What do puys think must be done to increase our literacy rate in the rural areas??" For this Question at the end of week one can list down all possible & practical ways which we/govt should do inc literacy rates.

Well, I think the attack on the north Indians in Maharashtra is absolutely unjustified.

Cos if we see it from political point of view, our constitution says that India is an undivided country and gives the right to all Indians to live anywhere within the country without any constraints
Political parties are all doing these to just attract media and be in the news because they know they stand nowhere.. So they are trying ill methods to get the popularity and want to pounce on Marathi votes

Just a simple question to them

Is Mumbai a developed city only cos of Marathis??

The question need not be answered because we all know that there are many entrepreneurs in teh financial capital from outside maharshtra

What should be done to stop such attacks??

Law and order should be very strong.. Guilty must be punished strongly cos they have no right to mess with the public property

Media should act responsiibly and stop giving them undue importance

I dont wish to point fingers before i set things straight for myself. Yes it is absolutely correct when u say that you are collecting buliding blocks of your life. But you lose the point when u ask us to choose who is better.
I didnt ask u to give up whatever u were doing and help ppl.
This is something that comes even when we are hardly 4-5 yrs old when we learn to share the swing with someone.

I work for oracle, help 3 slums, help at PG, build my skills, enjoy a livid social life too...So, Am i losing on something? No...I am gaining much more than I thought.

We need to change this very perspective that u've up!

well yes these question r relevant for sure...but one thing i want to state here...most of us here r of the age range 22-26. that is we r still collecting the building blocks of our lives....so wat i want to say is that we have limited resources and most importantly limited time...

so wat is equally important is to take ourself to such hight so that we r able to do something for our country and plz take note that i m talking abt sth of large scale....

1. a person who sacrifices his studies and teaches 10-20 slum kids and thus not able to do justice to both the jobs.
2. a person who doesnt teaches anyone but works day and night so that wen he clears IAS he can revamp the education system of the country...

i think its right to keep kasab alive till now bcoz of following reasons......

1.we r a democratic country and thus everybody (even if he is a terrorist) have the right for a trial in court....by not givin him that we could have had other countries pointin fingers on the credibility of our judicial system.

2.kasab cud have died anyway but by catching him alive we have made pakistan admit "mea culpa"

in the end i wud like to quote the statement of MR. P. CHIDAMBARAM "i am proud that we did not hang kasab overnite widout a trial coz that shows the credibility of the worlds largest democracy"

This is how the youth of our country should be shaping up!!

To elaborate further - Even if Ajmal Kasab is given a death sentence by the court , He is still entitled to go to the President of India for the final hearing. Afzal Guru has not been hanged till now because he is 26th on the mercy petition ..... so in the best case scenario - Ajmal Kasab would be 27th.We all need to be patient. It is not that "An eye for an eye" thing is wrong , We'll have "An eye for an eye" but , via the procedure established by the law.

But - There are things which disturb me. When we can give a just and fair trial to as heinous a man as Ajmal Kasab , why cant we give it to people affected by the Gujarat Riots?? We have always been a +1 in International Relations and a -1 in Domestic Affairs. This is one aspect that should be looked into - But , for that we need a strong,non-partisan civil society which would comprise people like you and me.

Bt herein i wud differ wid some of ur thoughts bhai..frstly i agree wid pp..wat she is telin is not about creating a whole school and to get engage in teaching dose poor small kids leaving ur job.

its actu about lending some 2-3 hrs in a week and teachin them(hope am correct pp )..I myself have startd an NGO wid 3 of my frnds n we do the same evry week.n it doesnt costs me anything except 3 hrs...m not advertsing myself or applauding my act bt jus wan to elaborate the fact that our comments here on dis thread of PG on kasab's trial wont affect any 1.

u made a valid point here...but i always give a person a benefit of doubt and not everyone is capable of doing something on the same scale...

i thought that the main motive of this thread is to discuss the pros and cons of the various events that happen in the country...i know that just by discussing we cant bring a change but i think there is an intellectual part of us wich gets enlightened only wen we see other people pondering over certain topics.......

I agree with you, The Security is still not upto mark (even after such incidents)...
The Government is still dependent on the fishermen for the information of sea route attackers.
Our government is waiting for occurrence of more of such incidents i think, then they would come in action.
I really pity on the situation of Indian Government, that these politicians have great vigour to talk and refute the opposition, and slap the opposition too(recent case of Thakrey).
But they haven't been able to slap terrorism till now(Recent Assam bombard)...Not able to condemn Pak fully.

May be they have done something but there are many things yet to be done as far as the security is considered, so that the people could be sure of their safety.

It has been one year now since we had one of the deadliest attacks in our history & what have we done till now.. Spend Rs. 31 crores on the main accused of the attack; Send dossiers to Pakistan and get it rejected; Failed to provide an answer to the lack of security in such an aristocratic place; Making a mockery of ourselves in front of other countries

The major issue is what we could have done:

First of all, raising our Inner Security System and if we have done so, people of our country should be aware of them and felt safe

Quick trial of Kasab and if the statements have been recorded and verified in front of world forum, then he must be shot dead (I am not a cruel person but to shoot a person who is one of the responsible persons for the death of hundreds of innocent people is no wrong)

Countering inner terrorism which is even more dangerous than external terrorism

Past caught terrorists must be hanged (because we keep them in jail, spend taxpayers hard earned money on them and send a wrong signal to other terrorists)

Police force compensation must be increased (every year the babus give themselves heavy increments in pay commission but these policemen give their lives for the nation)

Strong vigilance should be there on Bangladesh Border


These are the some of the things which i think should be done

As per my understandings police cannot interrogate Kasab until he is declared convicted in trial which he still hasn't. And by the time police will know anything substantial , it wont be much of use because till then all the possible links to main terror hubs etc would get erased just like what we all see in any hollywood SWAT/FBI/CIA etc based movie. Regarding Pakistan role, even before Kasab also we have countless evidence like live recording of POK terror camps etc which India time to time has shown to world. Also role of Pakistan in terrorism/taliban is nothing new and proven long back.

i m not in favour of delaying justice but today we have kasab and we know that he is a culprit so we can hang him or punish him....but dont we know that the politician and the gentry of india indulge in devious tactics in order to save their own soul...wat if tomorrow an innocent youth is framed and then the same fate as kasab is bestowed on him..??

AJMAL KASAB is the biggest proof and witness, who is revealing everything slowly and steadily about Pakistan's terror intentions...
So he must be kept alive until and unless, Pakistan is completely disparaged and punished by the whole world.
And it was because of him that India started probing and the real face of Pakistan,i.e., the support given by Pak to Taliban, came clear in front of the world.

Its now one full year of having Kasab in Custody. Police would already have extracted all the possible info they could . I have just read that 31 crores have been spent on his security till now. Last thing India would want is an another Plane Hijack where terrorists asking for kasab release. Also dont forget Parliament attack accused Afzal is still not being hanged even after being granted death sentence 7 years ago. This kind of govt functioning I think actually raises finger both on our judicial & legislative system of democratic India.

So finally a separate thread is created for this. Its great.Her is my take on it.

'Kasab' according to media reports , often smiles in court when the trial is on. He perhaps smiles at the thought that it took 5 months for us to start trial of a person who killed people in open. he perhaps smiles because we took months to declare he is a Pakistani , he is more than 18 & he used an AK 47 to shoot people. He perhaps smiles at the thought of being alive even after captured in action.
True , the law should take its own course , but is it necessary to waste the time & money of our courts which are already suffering from huge backlog. Is it not a time to send a strong & clear message to terrorists -in -waiting. Finally is it justice delayed is nothing but justice denied ???
