I feel these figures do not reflect the reality of spending in the premier league. In the 1990's, player transfer fees were peanuts compared to what they are now (the period when United thrived, with only Arsenal competing). In the last 10 years, the market has been distorted by huge transfers (esp. for British players), agent commissions and ever increasing inflation, which explains how the figures for Chelsea, Man City or Liverpool are that high. eg: I recall when Liverpool purchased Djibril Cisse in 2004, they paid a then club-record of 12 million pounds!!! Compare that to the situation today.

You also have to understand that the prices also increased because of guys like Abrahamovich and Sheikh Mansur, just because they had money, and wanted to win titles, they were ready to pay any amount . More demand = Higher Price . Compare it with SAF. Even if he wants a player badly he will not overspend .. Take Lucas Moura for example..

Well, there are many Mourinho fans here if am not wrong, but then IMO he hasn't done anything significant in the past three seasons. One league title and possibly 2 CDR. He was here to win the La Decima, but that is out of question now. And the arrogant attitude, him being greater than the club and all, makes me wonder how Real Madrid fans let this happen to them.
