NSE data you can get easily for any stocks since the time it started trading. For any analysis , you need the OHLC and traded Volume of X stock for certain number of days. In case of derivatives , you also might need OI (open Interest) . What you are looking for is Bhavcopy . Its released on the NSE site , EOD(end of the day) and is available to all free of cost. If you are looking for 5 yrs past data , it wont be possible to download it day by day manually , like Punit said , just subscribe to any data vendor and you will have access to the required data at a nominal rate. And as long as you stay subscribed , you will get the EOD data directly sent to you by them , no need for manual searching on nSE site.
If you are looking for TA software , go for Amibroker or Metastock eyes closed. For free versions , look at Fibotrader or webotron.

Datastream, Thompson financial are financial databases that are used for research and usually contains tonnes of data related to stock markets and also other financial and economic data.

Most traders maintain their own database, including me.

Price data is easy to download- just google.

Back-adjusting data is an easy job... shoot your queries and I will be willing to answer.

If you are studying in a decent B School they usually have access to most important databases. If not then I assume Investment banks and Brokers use these databases. I cant think of any other way in which you can access them. Sorry.

National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. .. Click on Equity --> Click on Market Information--> Click on Historical Data and you will get the closing price, the Lowest Price, the Opening Price, the Highest Price, Quantity traded and the previous day closing for any date from when the stock has begun trading to the present. You can calculate the % returns and price returns from this data in a few seconds.

You need to check if data for only gainers are provided, I am not entirely sure. When I was doing my thesis I got all the data I wanted from the NSE website, but you need to spend some time exploring it.

Edit: Did not see the last couple of posts before I posted. Anyway I think the NSE website does have gainers and losers for the day. Explore the website thoroughly, if you dont find what you want call up NSE they provide data for research but that will be a paid service.

Markets are not made by either fundamental analysts or technical analysts. Its rather made by the astute call of the investor who bases his decision on both of them equally plus other signs. At the end of the day, its the prerogative of the investor.

Fundamental analysts generally have a more broader expertise in financial and economic areas and understand the psychology of companies.
Technical Analysts are people who NEED to be very good at their technical stuff hence they are most of the time super-specialised or rather have to be super-specialised in their working knowledge of market technicals. Exceptionally good technical analysts will just look at a stock, do their calculations and tell you if its worth the pain.

Its a myriad of opinions, don't bother about all this. do things which naturally come to you. you should only need to know what works best for you and what you believe in.

For a fact, very few exceptionally good books you will find in India that pertains to trade. The world renowned books are pretty costly except a few ad most Indian book stores don't take the chance and bring them here.
More often then not I order stuff from outside. Its way much easier and the books are actually worth the money you pay.

i am a newbie in intra day trading, but what i always see and have profited from is tht the weak market hypothesis does not work in intra day trading 99% of the time, and i actually made profits from it.

As far as my knowledge goes, its also illegal in India for a retail investor to automate his/her trades :)
You can only buy such a software if
a)You are a direct exchange member
b)You have a customised platform/trading interface that can take the automated signals and induce trade on your behalf. Since its illegal, No brokerage provides this kind of compatibility.

In my mind, Its good that SEBI has these norms in place because it only caters to speculators and short-time investors, both of which are unwelcoming to any society or its companies. The basic reason for stock market is to infuse wealth in good companies, punish the bad ones, give impetus to growth of good companies and democratise money

Most people take to market for speculation but thats not the most profitable way out because if that were the case then you wouldn't hear about people who live so frugally that they only drive second hand cars pounded by hailstones after being named best fund managers of the world and getting their names in the top of the forbes rich list. Investment is a habit, if you nurture good habits the market will gift you and if you nurture bad ones then the market will punish .

Recently enough, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 998.50 points or 9.2 % which was the highest intraday decline since its inception in May 26, 1896 because of which there was a huge uproar when the markets crashed due to such automated trading triggers which basically tipped automated selling signals on and sent the market down in a spiral, because of the same US-the capitol of capitalism-for the first time in its history is going to test financial market circuit breakers which will stop the trading of a particular share for 5 mins when its price fluctuates by 10% up or down in a 5 minute period.

But what in my mind is not speculation or short-term investing?
Something which you thoroughly understand or can predict (but the mathematical probability of which isn't 100%)
Ex - Forex trading is heavily related to economics and news.
like
a) When Lehman went bankrupt, traders sold off positions in stocks and commodities and had to hide in US treasuries (majorly) so the $ went up.
b) When Bernanke said, the US fed was being too generous in printing money-thereby devaluing the dollar- so the $ went down.

Both the situations were highly predictable and patterned.

As an aside, this is why i reiterate India needs more Economists (and not just engineers) who stay in India (and not chair Harvard or Imperial professor chairs ) to understand the deep implications of such things. Unfortunately, none of that is going to happen anytime soon and atleast the people who understand economics are not much welcome in our MBA society, where as, like i always say, harvard takes in 40% just pure humanities (mostly economics) and 26% pure business grads, about 22% pure science and about 11% engineers-if i divide equally (Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be controversial here).

There is also a big golden rule of the markets, as i see it - Anything that has no risk is either illegal or is of no value

Yes, I have seen some of his books but only his "long term secret to short term trading" was nice enough. Others are just recycling this same book. Nonetheless, the things written in the book don't exactly seem like 1000% return monthly that he seemed to have got over a year or two, Teaching the same to her daughter at age 16-So i hope he writes a better book before he passes away, same is true for people like buffet although enough has been write by and for him, he needs to write a definitive guide to markets as he sees it.

Another thing with george soros, Everyone keeps hearing about 1.1 billion he made in one evening in betting against the british pound but not enough people know about his 600 million losses. so absolutely no one is perfect.
