@ RockinFerrari....We can get the same config cheaper by 1500 bucks or so if we get 80 GB HDD (it's a bulk deal, so at this price dell can reduce the rates to the extent mentioned on website) andadditional usb disk drive would cost you around 4500 bucks which would run slower and most of wont be having that...so it's and additional expense

some pointers:

instead of a 100 gb hdd we can go in for a 80 gb hard disk as has been rightly suggested and we can offset this saving by opting for the Windows XP professional OS instead of the home edition. This OS has distinct advantages over the home version.

I got a Dell Inspiron 6400 for 44k about a month back and guys take it from Me .. it definitely does ROCK

The wide screen is really good and the battery back up is amazing.

Ok time to clear up some misconceptions:

The DELL model has a 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 Hypermemory card. It has 128MB on board memory and 128 MB shared memory.
Even the NVIDIA card has 128 MB onboard and it can use upto 256MB shared memory (read that on a website somewhere).

Also since the ATI radeon card has a dedicated 256 mb.. it will put up a better perfomance than Nvidia which is only shared from your system memory..

1.) Just for comparisions, NVIDIA card was intially designed for desktops.. Not entirely suitable for Lappy's. Moreover, Nvidia consumes more power than the ATI card coz of the same reason. ATI card is designed specifically for Lappy's n consumes less power..

Me interested but i have a few suggestions:
1. Instead of ATI radeon card why not go for NVIDIA GeForce card.Dell is providing this one in other models.
2. Instead of 2*512 Mb ram go for 1*1024 Mb one. Will help in upgradation in future.

Hi.. For the benefit of all those who are caught between the Inspiron 640M and Inspiron 6400, here is a comparison sheet. Please download the attached file.

The key differences in between the two configurations have been highlighted in Blue colour in that sheet. The differences are:

(i) Inspiron 640M config has RAM speed at 667 MHz FSB (same as that of the core). Inspiron 6400 config does not have RAM speed mentioned. It is 667MHz even though default is 533MHz.

(ii) Inspiron 640M config has a 14.1" screen of resolution 1280x800 (results in reducing weight by close to half a kg). Inspiron 6400 config has 15.4" screen (with Truelife) of resolution 1280x800. True life is much better that the normal screen.As far as weight is concerned, i doubt whether half a kg would kill anyone.just because of that, i cant leave a much better monitor.and we really wont be carrying it everywhere.

(iii) Inspiron 640M config has Intel Media Accelerator Card. Inspiron 6400 config has a dedicated 256MB ATI Mobility Graphics Card for the gaming freaks.Not only for gaminf but the people who'll be making presentaions with flash etc or ppl responsible for web site designs would also be useful and if not gaming then this memory would as it is enhance the general viewing capabilities of laptop...be it presentaions or animations (if you dont make one, atleast you'll be viewing many and your normal laptop would not be able to take heavy loads as 640M is alos 1.6 GHz...it'll hang, at least with dedicated graphics memory..that wont be the problem with 6400) ...cartoons or movies or games and yes many of would be playing some game or other...we are not gaming freaks sirf bolne ki baat hai

(iv) Inspiron 640M config has only 80 GB of Hard Drive space whereas Inspiron 6400 config has 100 GB.We can get the same config cheaper by 1500 bucks or so if we get 80 GB HDD (it's a bulk deal, so at this price dell can reduce the rates to the extent mentioned on website) andadditional usb disk drive would cost you around 4500 bucks which would run slower and most of wont be having that...so it's and additional expense. Although that can be kept as an option in mind and we can get new prices for 6400.

(v) Inspiron 640M config has the Sound Blaster Audigy Advanced HD Sound Solution. Inspiron 6400 config has the default Integrated Sound Solution.The speakers with 6400 are much better 2 watts speakers....stop faffing dude....they are better than HP5118 also (please dont start with it again...just for comparison)

(vi) Last, bust most important is the price factor. The price for the Dell Inspiron 640M is Rs. 58,068/- whereas the price for the Dell Inspiron 6400 is closer to 63,100/-.Which is almost same as Hp5118 (only for comparison).Yes, on choice of laptops, opinions may vary..but i think we have a very good deal with dell.


One more thing....please note down that dont think of price steppnes by 5k today. Its resale value would be much better after 2 yrs. at least you'll be able to sell it for 40k then minimum...but 640's config is not upto the standard even for today's world...wont be able to sell for more than 25-27k..trust me....you'll lose money

and yes you'll also lose out on a better config, better screen and better graphics, better hard disk, better memory (it's 1 GB but 2 slots so you wont have to discard you previous ram) and then maroon over it for next 2 yrs...you cant buy laptops everyday....

Dear all...here's the new thread for discussions on Dell Inspiron Laptop whose deal has been stuck today. We are going for this laptop and not HP5118 now.

For the uninitiated, here are the details once again......

Inspiron 6400 for a base price of Rs. 60,672/-, a 170 bucks costlier than HP 5118 but a better config.
Taxes vary state to state..most places it is 4% which brings the total figure to Rs. 63,100/-, 180 bucks more than 5118 but worth it. Have a look at the specs

Hey Raghav,how bout a drop down to an 80 GB hard drive,hope many guys wont mind this n it brings the cost down by rs.2573(vat incl)
20 gigs...i doubt if that'll be an issue as most of us would also have pen drives.
