yes..i agree ...the laptop gets heated up when its on AC power///

latest updates...the touchpad is too good.. never got the hang of using it on my friends' lappy... this one is smooth...i am not even using the mouse right now...
installed the return of wolfenstein 3d .. (another game that my p3 dint install and this one runs smoothly) .. using the touchpad for all sighting moves...
tried searching for dead pixels...none found so far :)
dell customer care called.. their service engineer will be here today...

and contrary to chetan's experience i dint find any heating problems... the battery does get warm after an hour or so of using with the mains on..but thats it ..warm..not hot or anything !!
and the screens jus too good... saw some JOEY episodes on it... looks good even in the battery save low brightness mode...

Hmm. A lot of people have said a lot of things and i have nothing much to add. But I do have a question as a humble non hardware person. Would you recommend taking an AMD processor instead of Solo or duo centrino or duo solo etc etc? Cos it is an amazing 1.8 Ghz. But I've heard cases of AMD processors over heating and stuff.

So any help would, well, help!

guess what,,??
i got my laptop in the evening..its awesome and the screen is gr8 too.....theres a button that u can use to increase / decrease the brightness and the bright screen looks cooll\..

but one point on the flip side..
the right side of the laptop gets heated a bit within 20 mins..
and then it gets unbearable....after abt 40 mins..



but overall the laptop is gr8....
i am writing this frm the same!!



the keyboard is a bit thin though....its not high to be felt by the fingers...

I'm delighted to see a dual-layer DVD burner as well, as systems in this price range used to have at best a DVD/CD-RW combo drive. The E1505's speakers aren't name-brand, but sound better than your average notebook speaker setup.
At $999, the E1505's bang for the buck is tough to beat. An Intel Core Duo T2300 (1.67 GHz) and 1GB of RAM is an ideal configuration for beginning video editors and Adobe Photoshop users. My SYSmark 2004 SE tests and Photoshop scripts produced decent scores. Even more impressive is that Dell manages to throw in discrete graphics. The ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 may not be top of the line, but it's a whole lot better than integrated graphics. At least you'll be able to play games like World of Warcraft without losing frames. Battery life, at 2 hours and 53 minutes on our tests, isn't as long as I'd like, but it's okay.
With dual-core mobile processors introduced just this January, it's encouraging to see a laptop with the Intel Core Duo available for people who appreciate technology, but don't have a lot to spend on it. dell was unable to deliver the system today.

i called five times to enquire...and finally what i got is this.........

the transport team (DELL) did not call me as it was expected.
they say that they cant force the transport guys to deliver it on a specific date.
So now the Transport guys will decide , when i shall be getting my system :(


DELL ppl dont have any co-ordination between either of their teams .........

"With the advent of PCI Express, ATI and nVidia have developed technologies that allow the use of system memory as a buffer for graphics data, basically extending the memory of the dedicated GPU itself into system memory. The nice thing is that this can offer a healthy and very inexpensive performance boost for chips that would otherwise be painfully crippled.
The problem is that system memory is almost always slower than dedicated GPU memory, so it's no substitute for having dedicated memory.
Worse still, low-end parts that use this technology are frequently marketed in a misleading fashion. For example, newer Sony S-series notebooks use GeForce Go 6200s that list as having 128MB of video memory when in fact they only have 32; that 96 is shared. Likewise, there's been a lot of confusion regarding the amount of actual memory on the ATI X300s used in Dell notebooks.

Well infact you would not need to do that either.
A CD having all the drivers shall definetely be given with the Lappy to allow for future installations in case of a major crash!

so wots the latest on this... what are we going for finally..???
i would personally prefer 100gb + xp home ... wots the big deal bout piracy ??:satisfie: and if u fear reinstalling the system on to ur brand new laptop...dont worry...u just need to take care that u have backups of all the drivers...nuthin to it !

You probably spoke with a non-techie person who joined Dell yesterday.
The Hypermemory cards have been designed specifically for reducing the amount of onboard memory on the graphics cards. Dont believe me? visit the ATI hypermemory site:

And about the X1400 256mb card check these links out if you still have your doubts:

Oh well there are dozen more links you will find on google but I havent seen a single site where the X1400 is said to come with 256mb dedicated memory. Will not matter too much anyway if your system RAM is 1GB unless you plan on playing the baddest of the 3D games.

I would suggest for 80GB + WinXP Pro. The reason being one cannot logon to a domain using WinXP home. simply being its for home use and there will be no domain for home use. it only supports workgroup concept where all the computers in the same LAN will be part of the workgroup. but I guess in IIMs there is a domain and a user will have to logon to the domain. and there are certain other features which are there in XP Pro which might be useful though not necessary. anyway Pro is for professionals and home is for home users. and you know who we are . you can have a look at the comparison between Pro and Home here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.mspx

dude...the octroi is applicable on the price of laptop...so if you buy a cheaper laptop...you'll pay the same percent of octroi but money wise it would be less...
and secondly...how many ppl are familiar with linux??? i myself would not buy a linux based laptop and crash it because of lack of knowlegde...you can always tweat microsoft the way you want...

U missin out the point buddy. A system pre-installed with linux could be formatted using a windows xp CD on boot. U never need to even see the face of the penguin at all ... The idea behind the whole thing is to bring down the cost.

Also as octroi is a percentage of total cost, u r effectively paying more than the cost of the OS for a preinstalled OS (measly though the octroi of 10% on Rs.3500 may be, it is still a further loss of 350 bucks).

A volume license can simply supersede the so-many-pirated-windowsxp-cd's you come across every day (available easily with a techie friend or at any pawn shop for 150-200 bucks).
So u may install one of those on day zero of holding the laptop. It shall just delay the reconnaisance with it by 45 minutes or so and then, once at the insti, just update your license details to a valid license key.
PS: I do NOT encourage piracy, but then in the long run everyone's gonna have pirated MS office and other stuff pirated too, so i think one can-do with an OS like tht for 2-3weeks (Not so bad considering that 87% of home users have a pirated version all their lives - Microsoft Official survey :satisfie: ) !

Well thts my take on the issue. But I guess watever everyone can come on a consensus too should do fine wid me!

Someone had worked out a number of 2600 per head for 50+ ppl on one of the groups I joined, but I wouldnt vouch for it.

Mebbe someone can call 1800 11 11 00. Microsoft helpline. and enquire.
The toll free number works on MTNL/BSNL phones only so no-can-do from my office.

Also if this works out, we could ask DELL to just give us a Linux installed lappy or anything (basically one widout any Microsoft OS). This way we could trim off a good 3 to 3.5G on the price too. Mebbe Raghav or anyone else who is negotiating with DELL work this out. Besides all folks who are joining instis now can talk to their IT Committe / Student Council people to check if the numbers work out for them. They infact can even lower their bulk-deal rates by doing this as the number of volume license holders goes upto (150 - 200 +)

If someone takes timeout to call the Microsoft people, do post here. In the mean time I shall try to get someone to tlk to them too.
