Using diesel in passenger cars is ALWAYS an EXPERIMENT. C'mmon, Diesel is used to propel ships!!! not 1.5 or 3 lt engines!!!
So its all like a trade off...! Probably you have to ask yourself...What do you want out of the car? Racing? or high Utility(carying loads etc..)?
So, on the safer side, i would reccomend the use of petrol engines wherever possible.
Hope that helps.
Hmmm....dude...I understand that the diesel scenario in India is pretty down in the dumps and even though things are improving now, they're only improving at the higher end (read Skoda Octavia TDi). Diesel as a fuel is largely shunned in the US but just look at Europe and you'll be surprised at the things diesel can do. CRDi is just one fragment of the overall picture, TDi and PD from VW are right up there too. The Skoda which is lauded so much here is actually one of the lower-end diesels in Europe. If you as you said, diesel is meant to propel ships, tell me why would Mercedes-Benz strive to improve diesel SO much? Right from the C-class to the S-Class, every one of their passenger cars incorporate a diesel engine. That is, leaving out the Coupes and the Maybach but thats gonna change too with the release of the Merc CLS. I mention Mercedes only because of the high respect that it garners over here.
Audi, BMW, VW, Alfa Romeo, Skoda, Mazda, Ford are all striving hard to improve upon diesel.....why? 'Coz diesel is more environmently friendly, easier to drive with ALL that torque available AND much more fuel-efficient. Remember, I'm talking of modern diesels here, plz leave out the ambys and the premiers. Seriously dude, try driving the skoda diesel, its something to be experienced. So far I've been touching upon only the refinement of the engines, fact is that the new diesels are good enough to give the petrolheads a run for their money. Picture this, a Golf 150 PD - 1.9Liter engine, 150Bhp, 0-100Kmph in
7.9 seconds.

and the fuel-efficiency? 18Kmpl!!

the price is not too shabby either at around 18,000$ that translates to 14lakhs!! That car is faster than any car on the indian roads 'cept for the SL500(7.5s)!! Going a bit higher up, there's the S350 CDi from our dear Mercedes doing 0-100 in 7 seconds and finally the new Audi A8 diesel - 4Liters, 275 BHP and 650Nm torque(thats nearly the same as the Enzo!), 0-100?6.5 seconds! If u want cheap, there's always the Skoda Fabia 1.9TDi Sport at 130BHp and 9.2 seconds 0-100...all for 7.5Lakhs Indian equivalent.
My point is, plzzzz try not to diss diesel. Its the clean fuel of the future, petrol will always be there, petrol will always be faster and petrol cars are invariably lighter BUT diesel is catching up in all respects. Moreover, it makes a good point to have new-tech diesels in India, what with Indian consumer pining for mileage(who doesn't?!). Its nearly the best of both worlds, and in a few years it will be. I drive two diesels, an Indica which shows how bad diesel can get and a Lancer which shows how far ahead the Japanese were in terms of diesel even way back in 1998!
Peace,
