I repeatedly kept telling rajeshnsitan to drop the issue(bcoz i never said the words with which, he started the discussion... i never blamed the mods in my post) and told him that he is welcome to discuss it through PM..... yet, he kept posting.... and none of the guys, (blaming me).... said a word about that.... Don't expect people to google up your history or even check ur past posts...Once you've spent a considerable amount of time on any online forum, ppl make an opinion of you based on the *posts*.....It might be a limitation of the medium, but thats something you will have to learn to live with....Factor that into your thought process and I am sure you will see better sense prevail !!

I am not sure if you are aware of the meaning of the word *stretch*, but stretching numerous mods and junta is what you are currently doing....And just in case you are unaware of , many a times, silence accomplishes a *lot* more than coming out 007 style !!! Think about it....Yes, you have contributed a lotta d/l stuff to junta...But that doesn't give you a blanket right to go spamming and say - hey look the other way now, i did a lotta good there.....You are obviously pretty pissed off over your banning...But to stretch it beyond a point and hijacking multiple threads is simply unwarranted....Give it a thought....and your keyboard, some rest :)

Also, to reply back Y! offliners or emails is personal choice. All about individual judgement. If some babe sends a offliner that she liked ur so-n-so post, u take a call to reply back or no! And abuses are the other side of the coin. But then, as u pointed out, keeping distance makes sense. And somehow exclusivity breeds respect! :smile:

Heated discussions are (even though, they shud try to keep their cool) legitimate, because it is obvious that people have different views and while in a debate, their aim is to win over their opponent.. But, should abusive language be tolerated? Doesn't it hurt our pride? I believe that the mods should seriously do something about these people, who lose their cool so easily and behave like rickshaw wallahs.. (intolerable abusive beghaviour)

I wanted a clarification from the Mods. I have a question. At many a times I am at the receiving end simply because I don't answer mails/posts or reply back to Yahoo PMs (arrey i get offliners the next day bhai please wait )

I mean verbal abuse on YM or gmail or still worse at times even on my cell phone. For example, there is a guy called Vishal Tajpuria who is a user on PG (with the same name). He wanted me to photocopy the entire Manhattan SC (a $77 book) and courier it off to him in Mangalore. He is working in Infosys Mangalore. I have never seen him/met him in my entire life. I even went to the extent of agreeing to it. This was carried on using my cell phone. When I delayed it by a few days he started abusing me like anything on SMS Using words and threats that I have never heard of .......worse of all he was very personal in his msgs. Very, very personal. I tried ignoring his SMS and he finally stopped.

Now this user got to know about me thru PG and the whole thing was thru this forum. Any tips on how to deal with this kind of users ? Is there a way you Mods deal with this situation ?

But, if it a temp ban.... then why is there a need to show it to everyone that so-and-so was banned? Do it in such a way, that the person really understands it.... Then he/she is bound to feel humiliated.... even after that person has improved upon returning.... bcoz those queries keep the person reminded that he/she did spamming.... which was wrong... Aah...Banning,the reasons are as varied as each individual out here...Monil has rightly pointed out most of the reasons....But more than the reasons...I think a more valid point is trusting the mods' judgement....Sure, mods do make errors....Its just that over a period of time, the errors of judgement are likely to reduce just that much....There are posters and there are posters. There are some who genuinely wanna give their 2p to the community...And there are posters who genuinely want everyone to listen to what they say and agree...They tend to speak for others when, typically, their opinion is an extreme one...And most importantly, they start attacking persons, rather than the opinion expressed....In case you dont get a bschool admit, the last thing one would expect is a poster to come out all guns blazing and abuse the school, the students on the forum and say everyone sucks !!

And ofcourse...the PMs/emails are a different story altogether

And yes, When we ban anyone, get one thing clear. Its NOT personal. Its in a large part for the others on the forum also to see and realize what begets what !! So the point abt not having the famed golden balls thingie doesn't hold good...Sure...Come back once your bans have been lifted, if its a temporary ban..But more importantly, try to take a chill pill

I second Maverick on the issue that if a person is banned after repeated warnings, the user is at fault and he deserves to get a 'Banned' rank. Why so?
- If he repeats the same mistake after being warned, we know hes either not taken us seriously, doesnt understand us or doesnt pay heed. In all cases, he is at fault. Once he's sent to vacation, he also becomes a deterrant to others. But, when he returns back, in the true spirit of the community, I dont think anyone ever has issues about him contributing to any thread if he speaks sense. Even a few very senior members (1200+ posts) had been banned at some point over certain issues. So what, they decided to learn from it and have never looked back. :smile:

Also, the point Gaurav makes over here could be valid that there could be different ranks for Limited Bans and Permanent Bans. Something like 'Suspended' and 'Banned' Point taken. Under consideration.

Dear realization comes from self..... and humiliation comes when people know about it..... I dont think, there is any need to blow the trumpets and announce that a person is banned..... just seizing his ability to post... will make him realize that he has done something wrong..... (this is the case of temp bans)

But if a person is incorrigible, then he can be banned permanently and his status can be shown that he is banned....

The adv: Every body does mistakes..... but the purpose of banning is not to humiliate but to reform..... When people keeps on asking u, why u r banned repeatedly.... in the end.... u feel frustrated.... u feel dejected and even if u have creative ideas.... u dont wanna implement them.... WHY??

Suggestion :

When a member is a banned...
Can;t it be stated why s/he was banned and the duration ??

By doing this.. the other pagals may atleast realise what one should not do...

Also, while banning a member we specify a reason (shown to the user) why is he/she banned. So, if someone returns and tries to gather sympathy stating 'God know y i was banned', u know theres something fishy!

I have a query. How do we avoid the prejudiced(which is bound to happen, considering the fact that we as human beings tend to get conditioned and prejudiced against or for a particular point of view) decision of a mod. Mods, unfortunately are human beings. And they too can make mistakes in heat of moment.

As pointed by Maverick, the ban can be for any period of time from 1 day to forever. What is important is the fact that once u get banned, u feel bad and it does create a negative impression in the minds of crowds doing rounds here. So even if the fellow gets unbannned soon, it leaves some poor impression..kind of...oh!!..u see...the guy was bannned!!.
So i think there should be a mechanism in place...(plz pardon my ignorance if its already there) which allows for lot of deliberation before banning sombody even for a day.

talkin abt above mentioned point i think if a person is banned for a shot period of time then the title banned should not appear with his ID n only his posting abilities should be suspended for that period...cos if he's banned for a short period of time our only perpose is to make him mend his ways n nothin more which i don't think should be told all over the forum that this person is banned...

Can;t it be stated why s/he was banned and the duration ??

By doing this.. the other pagals may atleast realise what one should not do...

If we ban a member, who's busy advertising on the forum, we generally the post and add a note that the member is banned. We do try to post the reason, but most of the times its quite obvious you see

Guys, The purpose of the thread has not been clearly understood. We can keep cloning issues limited to the 'Clones on PG' thread.

For other queries on Banning... continue here. This thread will deal with Issues on 'Why ban someone on PG?', an overview on the criteria which we look at before declaring a Ban. Its for information purpose. Also, if u feel a certain user was banned harshly, the issue may be discussed. The Mod issuing the particular ban would clrify the same.

Actually the point Mav made is right...Cloned ids are slightly poking their nose too often now...

But atleast right now 99% of them are either harmless or even made to make some welcome change in way someone writes like Vengeance... Even Aarav's clone ids are harmless... But maybe later on too much of this might get irritating...

Even VidesiGuru i created a long time was after Spiderman posted about VidesiGuru on the Once upon a time thread...I created that id and posted immediately after him or something...

I think the only way to judge is the content the poster makes... Unless the ID that has been cloned makes a protest that someone is using his ID in a wrong way... there is no reason to ban any supposed clone...
There is no way you can be 100% sure anyways... unless one of the parties admits to being a clone...

Never once did Aarav and Stefan R posted simultaneously.

Stefan R, and R Federer only posted in CAT threads, or quant threads. Where was the chance of controversy?

And these 2 ids were never put into use once I started writing again as Aarav, even if it was on couple on occasions, it was only in quant threads.
