Dost..I am going for SOA because I have found plenty of people(Indian mostly) who are fellows of SOA, In case of india IAI fellows are less because of the reasons mentioned in previous posts, like they have started conducting exams late, passing rate of candidates compared to UK body, etc..
Recent Associates n fellows can give you good guidance for exams as well as placements

In terms of prospects o feel both are good,because It will make you an actuary at the end..
by the way I am leaving my job from 1st jan to prepare for the exams i mentioned above..
Target is 6-Months Hard Study/Continuous & 3 Prelim & CFA Level-I clear...

SOA is more flexible than IAI, but costlier than IAI

I am a software engineer from Mumbai University. I have scored 85+ in HSC and 55+ during graduation.
The site says that there is an entrance exam on 28th January. None of the people on this forum are talking about entrance exam since 2 years.
Do I need to give the Entrance exam before getting the membership? How tough is the entrance test? How many days will it take to prepare for the entrance exam? I still have 2 months to prepare. Can I get through if I start preparing for the entrance now? I am very good at mathematics.

Someone mentioned that the pass % at Institute of Actuaries, UK is much higher ( around 75 %) compared to IA, India ( around 25 % ).

Can anyone put light on this.
Is it advisable to join at UK or India?

Well I have been doing a lot of research on Acturial Science for some days and the discussions here seem very helpful to get a good understanding of this career path. Let me share my concern with you :
I dont have 85% in math in 12 th, however I have 62% in my engineering,
after engg. i didnt go for a technical job, instead joined a IT Product firm where I am working as an Account Manager for Corporate Sales,
I want to switch my career path towards Finance. I am applying for the membership of IAI.
Please let me know do firms offer actuary profile to graduates like me , I have heard some firms hire fresh graduates for an actuary profile and then encourage to give actuary exams.

hey if anyone interested in pursuing mba along with actuarial science there is a mba course in NMIMS called mba in actuarial science . Its a full time mba cource with actuarial subject in it. While persuing your mba u can also study for your actuarial papers as many of the subjects in mba course are same as os actuarial papers . There are many other oppertunities that u can see in this mba program such as you can get business analyst profile and risk management profile easily , Also you get an oppurtunity to get into a Bschool like Narsee Monjee

U can go 4 certification from Actuarial science of India, which is authorized body for this in India. There are approx 20 modules in it. U can start with CT modules to begin with(which i ll also be giving !).

2. Photo copies of 10th 12th and graduation
3.Exams will be in May/Nov 2011

Last day of application for exams in Nov will be in Oct 1st week or second you can find it in the iaai website

To apply for exams

1. You have to be a student member ( send the student member application form soon along with the copies, DD of 1000/- (check the website once for this) )

2. You have to order the material and give them a copy of the receipt of the material ordered.

3. You can take 3 exams maximum at one go

All the above info can be obtained from the institute of actuaries website.

If you are thinking of applying for May exams apply soon as getting the student membership , material will take time. ( about 2 months)

i have done my BE and m interested in taking this course. i want to know what are the eligibility criteria for the engineers as it is not clear from their website .
i have 59.6% overall considering all the semesters
we had 4 maths papers in which i scored around 56 % taking all four subjects to gather
but i dont think we could have 50 % maths weight as we have more than 40 subjects ,,

Puys i want to know that whether financial calculators are allowed in the actuarial exam or not, if any one can provide the link containing list for the allowed calculators, it would be appreciated.

i am also considering applying for actuarial exams...but what my quandary is that i don't want to work in the field of devising insurance plans, but rather in the field of investments and the later papers in the SA & ST series have these subject's exams, but i just wanted to know if any one here is aware oh how helpful actuarial certification wud be for a career in treasury or investment departments of banks and FIs.....does any body know of people who have used this qualification for career in quant finance........

It's very, very difficult. Some of my friends who were in IIT in 2008 batch are finding great troubles in clearing its paper. The actual problem is with its SM. It's not very explanatory and does miss on numerous important topics. So see if you can join some coaching class in your city.
The cut-offs are not pre-decided. One has to give one's best shot and then keep the fingers crossed. However, you may check their website to know the percentage of students clearing different papers.

Of course. We call that self-study! Keep a close eye on their website and apply for the subscription when they invite the applications, and order the SM if and when your membership is accepted, or, in other terms, if you are eligible for this course.

They give CM for not only math basic, but also other subjects. And, by the way, the material they give is copyright and one cannot hire-out, lend, give out or share by any other means.

What is "DAT"? All in all, there are 15 papers but it is advisable that one should clear 2-5 papers and then work as an actuarial trainee and then clear the remaining papers.

I have several questions in my mind. It would be great if anybody of you can clear some of my confusions for Actuarial Sciences. These are:
1) At this stage of my career (4yrs exp.), will it be beneficial for me to go for Actuaries? Currently, I am working in Pension Domain but not on Actuarial stuff. I am looking at Pension Administration.
2) How & when I can apply for ASI? I want to take CT series papers in March.
3) After completing all or some of CT series papers whether I will be joining as exp. or as a fresher in any organization? This is concerning me because I am not working in actuarial domain as of now & I do not want that my
current professional exp. will not be considered.

Plz clarify me on these concerns.

your current work ex won't make any negative or harsh impact if you pursue your career in actuarial science as actuarial science itself can be related to pension administration as both go hand in hand .

you can apply for ASI anytime , so still a lot of time is left. you can apply even in the month of nov and dec as well.

after completing papers , your work's ex will definitely be considered, so leave this concern as of now and concentrate on clearing papers because your present work ex and actuarial science are related to finance domain , so don't worry about consideration of your work ex, it will be counted for sure.....

last date to apply for exams usually last till the end of august month for oct - nov exams . like this year last date to apply for the exams is 28th august, 2010 but for this you need to be a registered person of actuarial society of India. you can register any time but to apply for exams one should have its member id of actuarial society of India with itself

You'll get the material once you send an application for it. But to send an application for SM, you need to have Member ID. However, to have Member ID, you need to satisfy the eligibility criteria of Student membership, which, in turn, would be satisfied only when you graduate with 55%.
So, you can't get the material before May-June or whenever your BE ends.

As akhil has pointed out, 55% is for (Marks in papers with math content)*100/(Total marks in engg).
There are papers like Thermodynamics and other stuff for Mechanical having math content. To find out which papers have math content, one needs to know the syllabus and stuff and IAI is not going to look into that. So, overall 55% in Engineering should meet the criteria.

I don't think you can sit for the exams before Nov' 11. You need to provide IAI with documents that you'll be entitled to have from your college once you complete your grad. To know when the application for the Nov exams are out, keep visiting the link I gave.

Just take note of one more thing that the content of Mathematical subjects content in all the years of the course taken together is not less than 50% of the total content. This is measured by the ratio which the maximum marks allotted to Mathematical subjects in all the years of the Course bears to the total maximum marks allotted to all subjects included in the examination of the entire course excluding languages. If you fulfill this, you are indeed eligible to apply.

While applying for student membership you will have to provide proof of 55% in engg (maths papers) which you can't provide unless you get your final mark-list.
If you can send your application with proof of eligibility, get the study material and send your application for exams by the end of August 2011, yes- you can appear for Nov 2011 exams. Else it'd be May 2012.

Well, there are two criteria for becoming a student member of IAI society. The one in which, unfortunately, you fail to qualify, is getting more than 85(out of 100) marks in Math in standard 12. However, according to the second criterion you are eligible provided you have 55% or more in grad. Hope it helped!
