Well, i always use Camlin black HB pencil.
PS: Infy provides them for free.:biggrin:

I guess the best grey stuff u can use is inside ur head...:)

i find the fabercastle triangle pencil better. it gives better hold and speed... vrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrroooooooooooom......

When first time i saw this thread, i couldn't stop laughing........but How stupid of me.....this was one of most discussed question when i prepared for CAT!!!

For me it was normal Natraj HB pencils. I used to carry 7-8 both end sharpened pencils to save "Time"....

Don't know how pencils are relevant in online CAT?

People still have to do their rough work using pencils

I guess we won't be allowed to take anything inside the examination hall.

So i m little nervous if i will be able to do my rough work with my fav nataraj pencils or now

Guys this is a serious issue "atleast" for me. For me pen will move faster than pencil. Pencil needs to sharpen again and again (If u dont have extra pencils).....As of now for all the mocks i had used pen for rough work..............Do the prometric provide extra sheets for rough work????

unko pakadne ke liye to ab chuhe bhaiya ke sahare ki jarurat padne wali hai...
shall we now switch over the discussion to which MOUSE to use...
bt ye bhi nahi kar sakte coz wo to IIM wale hi denge...
to ab discuss kare bhi to kya kare....

actually its a very good move by iim...it takes a hell lot of time to mark the answers in omr sheets...its easier to click...and if u havent used a good HB pencil or dint colour it perfectly then the chances were there to get ur ans. rejected by the scanner... nw there z no such probs...

haha..u r rite...just pray to god ki chuhe bhaiya ki tabiyat thik ho...(usually we get the ball mouse and the ball in it keep getting strusk in between...got the same mouse at ims simcat 6 and believe me it was a nightmare...) laser mouse is much better but still many institution dont use it...its unbelievable yaar...

bhai tapping the mouse with the lead of the pencil will break the lead i suppose... should we not tap it with the other end...

p.s.- a solution invited for people using pencil sharpened at both ends...

anyway here I am, adding my 2 cents to this spam ;)
I used faber castell for shading -- it's easy since it has a thicker lead :|
and apsara for calculation

Thats true... now we should find out which mouse is there at our respective center and always practice with that kind of mouse... also monitor and key board... are we allowed to adjust pixel size? that could be a very useful thing though... i would personally prefer 1024x800 where so i can capture more text in single eye span ::shock::

use HB nataraj pencil, and apsara NON DUST/natraj eraser, and nataraj/apsara sharpneR..

IF U HAVE SOMETHING DIFFERENT, THEN U ARE SPECIAL..GO AND
give ur best shot!!!!! just read all the questions!!!!

I always use apsara platinum extra dark pencils. can I use the same? They are luckier for me.

Do not use that pencil as it is extra dark and you might have trouble erasing the mark in case of a wrong answer.

Natraj is the best - not too dark nor too light. (IMHO)

BTW - I still had one IMS pencil from 2003 - for lucky charm's sake..the one which said - I + IMS = IIMs

5 attempts at CAT man. lost track of the number of pencils i used!

Just do not take tension of any kind. Even if you are not getting the answers of few initial attempts, do not loose ur calm..this is the key to crack CAT.Just sit back...take few deep breaths and you will start rocking.

Anyways, what matters is ur performance & ur preparation on the CAT day & for god's sake, not the pencil u use...

So, rather concentrate on the other important things ...

Last year, I had used Apsara Extra Dark Pencils for 2 reasons:

1. They were darker than regular HB
2. I took their tag line "extra dark for extra marks" a bit too seriously :)

In ancient Rome, scribes wrote on papyrus (an early form of paper) with a thin metal rod called a stylus, which left a light but readable mark. Other early styluses were made of lead. Today we still call the core of a pencil the "lead" even though it is made from nontoxic graphite.
Graphite came into widespread use following the discovery of a large graphite deposit in Borrowdale, England in 1564. Graphite left a darker mark than lead, but was so soft and brittle that it required a holder. At first, sticks of graphite were wrapped in string. Later, the graphite was inserted into wooden sticks that had been hollowed-out by hand! The wood-cased pencil was born.

After going through this thread umpteen number of times, I ordered custom made pencils. Got them today

Their specifications -

1> Exactly 15 cm in length, 2 cm in circumference with grooves made to fit my fingers.
2> Lead made from the best carbon mined in siberia.
3> Virgin wood made from the hardened cactus found in west africa.

I hope this is good enough for me :boat:

Hey when CAT goes online people will still use pencils to do the calculations and rough work, you gotta take that into account too. In this case some people will move to pen but still some of the people will definitely use pencils. The actual calculations will go in accordance to percentage of people preferring pen or pencil. Also if it is something like GRE where the centers' admins provide you a set of pencils then the consumption may rise. Complicated.
