Its not all that bad for me ...
My nets scores have been increasing with each SIMCAt/PRAC-CAT
Currently scoring in 40-45 range from the initial 25-32 range
hoping to get to 50-55 range by 20th November :)

I've been doing decently...average of 98 percentile with a few 99+ in a couple of tests...Haven't done any studying as such yet, just written loads of tests...20+ as of last count over the last 2 months

As for the IMS/TIME debate, i was in IMS maipal (Udupi actually) and thought the test series was pretty decent though people said it was unnecessarily tough...Your call...

I had said i would post a long post soon...Finally my first term is over so now here goes...

First disclaimers now. This all might sound very global (hope it doesn't) but you are welcome to post your specific queries and i'll answer them as far as possible.

I started prep around this time, give or take a few days...
By now i assume that you all are clear with your basics...If not, there's very little time to go back to your BRM's but if your willing to put in a little extra time, it's doable.

After each test, Part B,C, ACT's MCTs n FCTs, make it a point to attepmt all the ques without time limit...What that'll do is you'll find a way of doing a ques n then when you see the soln you have another method...You can choose the quicker of the two and you'll have different approaches to ques which will help you with any twists in similiar ques...


Do not get bogged down by a bad performance in any test...Remember to experiment with different strategies in the first 5-6 simCATs...Decide which one to adopt...But remember strats mean very broad ones...Be very flexible and ready to face any type of paper...You are there to answer questions, irrespective of the format they're in...That shud be the sole focus...

For QA and DI, please make sure you've gone thru all the questions....In whichever way...I mean some might prefer doing them one at a time while others scan the paper once before starting...


I have excluded VA because you might not read all the RCs...But do make certain that you look for the 'contextual usage' questions in the RCs...They're very easy and the word is usually even highlighted so you don't even need to go thru the passage...


Spend around 3-4 hours everyday on CAT prep...Do not overdo it....Remember, you have to peak on the D-Day, not before, not after...And do remember to relax if you think the pressure is getting too much...Take a day off...


I am pretty certain that the CAT paper is only going to be about keeping your cool, now more than ever before...There will be sitters in every section and please make sure you don't lose out on ques which you will regret immensely later...These ques will be diff for diff ppl but the end result wil be the same...


And i case i am not able to write before CAT, do remember to absolutely relax on the day before CAT (19th Nov i think)so that you are fresh for the next day...Last minute mugging WILL NOT help in any way...If anything, just go thru the formulae pages in case you find it painful to be sitting idle...


The two most important things you need to carry to your exam hall that day are a really cool head and immense focus on what you want to achieve.

cud some1 tell me whether jus scraping thru the cut offs ie scoring 12 in maths 15 in DI and ard 20 in eng help one in getting atleast a single IIM call...wats d use of having a cut off for each section,if one clears all cut offs but still doesnt manage a call....and there are coaching institutes like IMS which quotes a minimum score of 65 to get a single call...

Just scraping thru is probably not enough. Just scraping thru possibly ensures that you wont get rejected at the sectional cutoff stage (if there is such a thing as a hard cutoff... something i very seriously doubt). But there will be a lot of chaps who'll scrape thru 'em all. So what do the institutes do next? They take the highest scoring (overall) chaps from those.

Moral of the story : Score well in each section... and score VERY WELL in at least one

Hi apocalypse NOW! What an ID! An entire movie name! What didn't you keep the id as 'apocalypse now redux'?

Just scraping through will be of no help. If all those who scraped through got a call, then it would take ages for the IIMs to finish the GDs and PIs. IMS might quote a score of 65; however, TIME quotes a score of 55+ if I remember right to get at least one call. Of course, this total's out of 150, where each question carried one mark. I guess the same cuttoff won't apply if there are 180 questions or 123, like last year (since I don't know the total marks in last year's exam).

got a score of 68% in simcat 1 ......... cudnot clear the DI cut off ......can i still make it ???

Mr Mojo and others -what should be the best approach for RC i have seen quite of your post on the subject. I can read current affairs etc quite quickly but when it comes to literary works i can't read fast. Any advice on this. what is the past record of RC, usually what nature is it following.

Hmmm. Either it means that everyone's studying their posteriors off, which is good, or it means that the 'information-sharing' days are over just kidding!

As far as RC goes, I have no precise answer for the 'past record' and stuff. All I can say is that the passages are usually five in number, and at least three of the five are interesting to read for folks from all backgrounds, there's hardly (if at all) any esoteric/abstruse/jargon kinda stuff in the passages, so Devilsown too ought to find at least three of them interesting, deviod of 'venture capital', 'disinvestment' and stuff

Well, it's not only how fast one reads that's important, what's more important is how much one can perceive when one reads a passage. So, imho, speeds of 450/500/any higher three digit number are unnecessary. Grasping the main ideas within the passage are more important.

Some folks read the questions before they read the passage, so a bell rings when they come across relevant stuff in the passage. Others read the passage first. Follow only one of the two approaches, or any other approach that suits you best. What fits one needn't necessarily fit the other.

All the best in your preparation! Work hard, but work smart as well! No Mojo needed!

As someone who is finding oneself in the same situation, here is one idea that can be used. Since most of the people here have already given CAT once, the idea can be used easily.

I think the whole september can be devoted only for Mock CATs and a thorough analysis has to be done religiously. Then in October 2 weeks can be devoted for brushing up the basics and thereafter again the mock cats and analysis.

While giving mock CAT keep these things in mind.

Initially set a target of 45 which can be achieved as follows
Score 15 marks in 40 minutes for each section. (the 1-2 marks have made the situation quite simple). Make sure that whatever you do is rite(why do mistake when u have to do 7 2mk question in 40 mins-anything above is a big bonus). Gradually we shall achieve the twin objectives of scoring and achieving cut-offs consistently(by raising the target to 20 mks each section ). The 123 pattern is infact so good. However, you have to be flexible. So i guess even if a 150 pattern comes, all u have to do is earn 15 mks in each section. Thats it (atleast for making the car move)

i started my prep exactly one week before the simcats...3 hrs a day...was tough cos of fluctuatng working hours...and just managed a 80 percentile...and way away from the cut offs...am soooo deppressed....couldnt even bring myself to do the analysis of the paper...anyways have to pull my self together and rethink my strategy...maybe go watch some inspirational movie or something....

I spend around 30 minutes in RC and have managed to score around 14-15 , amongst 250 ranks in time's Mock Cat . Still I end up at 17-18 , 90% . Thanks to VA , I invariably end up scoring low in the VA/RC section . I wonder what is wrong with my stategy -

I havent started prep. on VA , but I do feel VA skills are honed over years and not overnight . So i dont really know how to start conquering VA , and also I dont know whether I should compromise my RC marks for VA - say spending 5 more mins on VA ?

Ideally how much should 30 minutes spend on RC fetch ?

Can someone advice me on this ?

Hi Nishant and all other fellow late-starters!

Scoring 30-35 in the Verbal/RC section is not impossible in the CAT exam, because the RC passages are
1. INTERESTING to read
2. not extremely lengthy

However, the AIMCATs from TIME have very lengthy RC passages and the subject matter too is pretty drab, so don't be disheartened.

The CAT RC passages will be much more interesting, and you'll be eager to solve them.

Everything else wrt scoring is relative! The faster, the better. The more comfortable you are, the better. The more practise you have, the better. Like I've said, IT DEPENDS!

Hey guys i just started my prep Y'day. Good to see that i got lot of company.

This is my second attempt, but last time (2003), i had prepared for more than 6 month , wz also going for CAT coaching. and got 90. So not sure how much i'll get this time.

Hope i'll atleast equal the score this time ( is that like too much of expectation ? ). Anyway i hase started going thru my old TIME material and started doing some speed maths.

Plan to rite my 1st MockCAT nxt weekend, hope that'll be sort of an eye opener.

But as am working now ( unlike in 2003 ) cant spend more than 3 hrs a day. hope that'll be enuf..

hi,

work for around 12-13 hours everday. like most of u have started CAT prep last week, and managed 44. something in SimCAT 1, with only formulae revision. that might probably a result of some of my slogging that i underwent the last year. need to improve.

thats where i need the been-there-done-that guys. plz suggest whether it is a good idea to purchase the b, c and d parts from IMS, coz i have last years papers. the dilemma i'm facing is that though i can attempt last years papers after rubbing the work done, will it actually help, considering that the new mock papers will be designed on the lines of CAT 2004's section a and b format????

also with just around 2-2.5 hours at my disposal what might be a good startegy to follow for the last 2 months??? i work alternate saturdays, its half day in that case. also no chance of me asking for a holiday......just might ask for it on the last friday before CAT.

I was preparing for GRE so i think i am comfortable with English kind of stuff but what about Quant ..i am not atall comfortable with long maths problem ....
