i think you got me wrong.

they have clearly mentioned on the form that you should not mention your CAT /GMAT scores anywhere . so i thought it was the protected status funda or something similar

and so the GD/PI dont actually know your percentile and neither can they ask directly??

As neumann mentioned, around 10 CAs in the batch, and most have a national rank to boot.

About the low percentile, one thing you do need to ensure is that you stand out during the interview, and show them the kind of diversity you can bring to the batch. How you go about doing this would depend on your background and interests.

Quite a few queries by CAs...I'm not sure about the exact no. in my batch but it's somewhere between 9 n 12... About your percentile, it is a teeny bit on the lower side but that should be even more reason for you to put in greater effort...You stand a good chance, don't worry...As for the ids of CAs in our batch, I don't know of any on PG, but I'll talk to them and ask them if I can pm you guys their mail ids or phone no's...

Well you could read my GD/PI experience on the thread...As for the GD/PI being exceptional, that wasn't the case...In fact i'd gone and told my roommate that there was nothing so special in the interview, which would compel them to take me...But then he said "Well but as you described it, there was nothing in the interview which would make them not to take you" Do read the interview preparation thread, and do keep in touch with the latest events...It is absolutely essential...The rest of it depends on you...Also I've heard of very few people who were aske the cliched questions like "Why MBA", "Describe yourself", etc...But no harm in being prepared... hi im a ca final yr student so just wanna know if ne ppl in A who were in their ca final when then gave the interviews or even if ull can direct me2 a CA ill be glad, basically wanna know wht imp they give2 ur articleship and do they ask Q's on it. i really feel articleship is a damn good exp and we do work hard and its like a regular 10 to 7 job with all the hassled of dealing with rude managers ,clients office politics etc.... the exposure i got through my articleship has been immense and i just cant believe it aint really counted,would luv it if they ask me abt my work,audits etc cos i feel i know my work inside out(not so confident abt acads specially a/cs finance and costing is cool) so wanna know if they do go towards ur articleship and if the work is valid ne weightage is given 2 it.

also mes a sports freak and sports is my way2 relax ,so wanna know abt the sports infrastructure in A and do ull actually get time 2 play atleast once a week, thnks

1. There is a significant weightage given to the CAT score but no one knows how much (apart from the admissions ppl)
But do not get complacent... I know of people with significantly superior percentiles than urs not convert their IIMA call

2. Read last yr's interview threads and check out the questions. You'll get an idea of what to focus on.

There are no specializations in IIMA...Only a general management course...You do get to choose subject of your interest, and you can choose subjects across a variety of fields... And to answer the question about dressing, try and read my post (the first on page 3) My opinion that it's a psychological thing... About the weightage given to CAT score, remember, only 2 out of the 7-8 100 percentilers (if such a word exists) made it to IIMA...

I need to know how much of economics do i need to study for GD/PI as Iam an engineering student from NSIT( by the way there is another guy in my class who has topped CAT)

I need to know one thing more . What is this Extra currics that everyone keeps talking bout. I wasnt in any group in my college, though I did clear semifinal round of Imagine cup(held by microsoft), got scholarship by college for first year only ,and have a few certies in extempore, clay modelling( it was just a fluke 2 times), adspoof etc( may be 3 or 4) held during our fests. Is this sufficient for extra currics
Acha I also didnt manage to get any training in summer last year and this winter . But had to arrange certificates some how. I believe that i have to hide this point?
and I have actually got my microsoft certificate laminated and it is quite big. Is it necessary that i carry it along or a photocopy would suffice.

and what bout my marks in college the result of 6th sem is out but we wont be getting the marksheets till end of 7th sem. So do i calculate my aggregate with or without it(actually it lowers my aggregate by 1%)
Or do i need to get a provisional marksheet and take it along with the originals

3. IIM A gives calls (fixed no. of calls = no. of seats) plus waitlist. Last year waitlist went beyond 5.

To confirm, The waitlist was cleared upto 10...Till five before the registration and the next 5 after some people did not turn up for registration...I was WL-5 and the guy on the floor below me (valtorulez on pg) was WL-10...

Though i have gto calls from all 6 iims my percentile is a bit too low.....99.39 to be precise with the break up being 94.xx in di, 97.xx in eng and 99.xx in quant. I m from IIT and my current cgpa is 8.76...... no work ex...... i just wanted to as to wether is irt possible to convert ABC at such a low percentile because usually i c people with 99.5+ getting into the top 3 iims.

Oh..this is hilarious! If you have got a call, you stand a good chance to convert it too! And, nobody out here is going to say that you have 95% probability make it to at least one among A, B and C. Don't expect anyone to give you a reassurance. It will depend on your GD/PI, experience, academic bacground and performance and of course CAT score.

And you think your percentile is low, eh? Take this: QA - 96.43, VA - 96.05, DI - 97.7, Overall 99.10, Calls: BLACKI

Quit cribbing, your score is fine... it's not as if they gave you calls and then suddenly realized that you've scored less than what you think shud be a good score.

There are ppl who've had a degree abroad, and I'm not one of them. Don't know how much they were quizzed, but yah... you'll be asked stuff abt what u did and where u were. Socio-political... dunno, but it wudn't hurt to know a thing or two... be practical yaar, nobody expects you to be a chalta firta encyclopaedia of that country... just a few things to show you've been curious enough should be fine.

1. Dress code - i know this has been addressed several times, but still wondering...do we really have to wear a tie???

2. My personal view is that SOMETIMES an institution/ organisation has already decided that they will recruit someone based on exams, apps etc. The only reason they call you is to check whether you are who they think you are. Say for e.g. if they have made up their minds in your favour, the only way you will not get thru' is if u have a really bad day, and vice versa. Is this theory applicable to IIMA?

3. Read somewhere 882 calls made for 250 candidates (PGP). Makes it a deceptive 1:3.5 ratio. BUT, does IIMA give inflated calls or exactly 250 calls + waitlist? Heard that last yr waitlist came down to No. 5? Kindly confirm the same.

4. GD/ Case Study - Have heard that this is more for elimination purposes, rather than selection purposes. i.e. a Bad Gd means you have very little chance, while a Good or even Average GD merely ensures that you are still in the reckoning, nothin more nothing less. Any truth in this? If it is so, then does it not make more sense to have a 'safe' GD (instead of going for broke, trying 2 impress everyone? who knows maybe one of the evaluators may think u are too dominant, or trying too hard)

5. Heard IIMA likes its candidates to be really confident of themselves. Does that mean you try to bluff your way out of something you are unsure of or you admit that you do not know?

6. When were the results declared last yr?

Would really appreciate any comments from the seniors on the above...

Answers:

1. Wear a tie. I wudn't advise anything else.

2. No, a good interview can actually make up for your past sins :sly:

4. I think the GD performance has lesser weightage than the PI performance in a sense. What i mean is, a good GD might not get u selected, but a disastrous faux pas or an extremist view seen during the GD might make ur chances rather slim. Once again, the GD is followed by the PI, so you might get a chance to save yourself a call...

5. 'Confident' is not equal to 'bluffmaster'. Confident wud mean that you are sure of the things you know, confident of your abilities and knowledgeable about your limitations. If you dont know, you should have the courage and confidence to say so. That's the point.

6. A week or so after all the interviews were completed. (5th or 6th april 2005, dont remember the exact date)

You can mention that though you could have taken up an MBA elsewhere, you were very keen on doing it from the best, and hence re-took the CAT. Further, you can re-direct the question and mention perseverance and hard-work as your strengths.

Usually they dont ask this. In case they do, tell them 'yah, given it twice before' Why? Coz i didn't get calls the first and second time around :sly: what else cud be the reason why a person gives the exam again???

I have got calls from all the IIMs and i am specially happy abt the 'A' call...
but there seems to be a lot of hurdles betn me & the final 'A' call..so here goes my query list...
a quick profile update-:
2 yrs work ex in infy...IIT kgp B.Tech(hons) in Agricultural and food engg..xii-81.8%
x-85.5%......extracurricular(i can speak of something, i guess)...

qeries-:
1.How shud i defend going for the normal PGP when there is PGP-ABM ?
2.How do i explain changing tracks @ quick succession (agri engg going to s/w and now aiming to do MBA??)
3.I really don't have a hobby which i can speak of in the interview. Will this cause a problem...i mean are the gates of IIM A closed fr a person w/o hobbies(something worth mentioning)??
4.To what details shud i gather funda abt infy....i mean my client,my project , my department is ok...do i need to know more...as in what is infy's plan in next 5 yrs...what r the new things etc?
5.Acads...i have a decent cgpa of 8.08...now do i need to revise evrything ..or picking up some of them will do....?

as for now..I would grateful if if some1 can please clarify these doubts...it will be of gr8 help....

1. hmm.... u cud say that u've already learnt about agri stuff and there wud be more knowledge gain/value add if you get into regular PGP, etc.

2. tell them the real reason. shudn't be a problem, most ppl into software aren't comp sci. chaps

3. c'mon, you must b having some hobby!! taking a walk, singing, film music, reading, comics, computer gaming, puzzles, jokes, chess, kabbaddi, cricket, something!!!!!!!!! whatever it be, just be prepared on answering just about anything on it!

Got the A call. Kindly answer the following queries.
1. I am an M.E.(Telecom) from the IISc, Bangalore(C.G. 7.5/8.0(2nd)). Will I be able to indicate this PG degree in the form.
2. Major achievements: I would be trying to highlight innovation. I have 9 research papers(international conference), 4 journal papers (in telecom) and a patent(at my workplace ni signal processing). Will I be able to indicate this in the form and should I.
3. Other personality facets: Leadership (have never led a team) Am a DSP engineer in my firm. The only so called leadership experience probably was to mentor a junior through his M.E.
Initiative: Collaborated with PMs from Sasken for my work(joint publications) and with quite a few people at different levels.
4. Would investing avidly in the stock market qualify as a hobby. Would reading up on futures, derivatives and options qualify as an interest. Can I cite being recruited by Morgan Stanley Advantage Services (for Risk Management) somewhere without being gunned by questions on why didnt I join that.
5. What do I prepare. I doubt that the will ask me acads(diff betn GSM, CDMA etc. If they do good. All my papers are core analysis of aspects of CDMA/OFDMA/CrossLayer at IEEE tier 1 conferences) They will try to hit me where it hurts right. I am pretty strong in Stochastic modelling. Where do I mention this in the form.
6. Why do I want to do an MBA. Want to get the overall picture. Have realized that research can bring abt only a long term impact on the industry. (not right here right now types). Want to go into the consultancy/strategy management(of Sasken etc.)/VC firms side to see/evaluate budding startups and move on from there on my own.

Am not interested in becoming an IB. Interested in having most of the fundas of general management (a bit of operations/production/company finance and a bit of marketing).

Do I work on these answers. How do I leverage achievements and downplay weaknesses.
Help me out if possible, please.

1. Yes, mention it on the form. The CG is pretty good.

2. Yes, mention that too. Should be a plus point

3. That's sufficient as far as i understand. Shouldn't face much problems, say you've led ur team/part of a team/research subgroup, anything (handled 4-5 ppl,etc. shud be good enuff)

4. Mention it... it's a good thing... and prepare good answers to all possible questions. You cud leverage that to your advantage by handling questions based on this well. Just dont contradict yourself (with what you say/write in the form, etc.)

5. They will ask you on acads. I was into WCDMA at ISRO for a year and I was asked general stuff abt. it. In the IIMB interview, I was asked in detail, not only on WCDMA but also on antennae and EMagn.

6. I didn't get the question. If you mean "is this reason good enuff" i'd say yah... sounds reasonable. Just be practical, be yourself, dont bluff and think before answering. That shud be good enuff.

2 Yes again. If you do not find enough space in the form, feel free to make a resume highlighting the other achievements and shove it into the hands of the interviewers. Carry a file of all your certificates/accolades etc and push it in. Sell yourself.

2/4 There's place for other interests in the form. Now just be sure to know enough about them. Same goes with your papers/patents... if they're old, read up on the current state of affairs on the topics.

5 Again, nothing is certain. If they choose to grill you on your academic subjects, you can always try to push them towards your work, tactfully ... assuming of course that you have some decent workex. But recalling the basics of your degree shouldn't be a problem should it?

Thanks for your prompt reply. This helps a lot. No, IISc does not have any undergraduate degrees. So, It was not an integrated M.E. My bachelors and masters are from different universities.
Also, No problem at al if they push me in myarea. Very clear with all telecom/SP fundas.
Wanted to know general things they'll ask me. I think that was prob. the only question which I was not able to present properly(I dont think an IIMA student can go wrong in understanding my question it definitely is my fault). I am pretty good at my acad basics. Infact thats why I have those publications. I wanted to know the other areas theyll grill me on.
Like General Awareness Eco fundas etc. Theyll hardly ask an IIScian acads right.
Thats what I atleast think is my strong point. If I am not mistaken theyll hit where it hurts right. Eco fundas General Awareness. What do I prepare there, macro issues etc.
Any books u would suggest.

I have got calls from all the IIMs and i am specially happy abt the 'A' call...
but there seems to be a lot of hurdles betn me & the final 'A' call..so here goes my query list...
a quick profile update-:
2 yrs work ex in infy...IIT kgp B.Tech(hons) in Agricultural and food engg..xii-81.8%
x-85.5%......extracurricular(i can speak of something, i guess)...

qeries-:
1.How shud i defend going for the normal PGP when there is PGP-ABM ?
2.How do i explain changing tracks @ quick succession (agri engg going to s/w and now aiming to do MBA??)
3.I really don't have a hobby which i can speak of in the interview. Will this cause a problem...i mean are the gates of IIM A closed fr a person w/o hobbies(something worth mentioning)??
4.To what details shud i gather funda abt infy....i mean my client,my project , my department is ok...do i need to know more...as in what is infy's plan in next 5 yrs...what r the new things etc?
5.Acads...i have a decent cgpa of 8.08...now do i need to revise evrything ..or picking up some of them will do....?

as for now..I would grateful if if some1 can please clarify these doubts...it will be of gr8 help....

Really... Lets cut the comparison thingie... I never expected, dreamed or wanted A when I looked at the IIMs... This long hours of work, 100% attendance is a serious turn off for
wide day dreamers like me...
But must say the smartest students do seem to be here... Want to know more now
GD/PIs... There is a lot of stuff out there... My mind will come up with questions once someone can truly describe this so called 'A' thingie... Or lead me to good posts, links...

General Perception of Consult and Finance companies in India and US over differences between type of grads from ABC... and even LIK... if someone knows and can talk about it...
